SCHOOL YEAR PRAYER Almighty and ever-living God, You have chosen and called us by name; empower our one family on a journey of faith and solidarity. Jesus, raise our awareness to the pain and despair of victims working in unjust conditions. Turn our empathy and compassion into advocacy and action so that all our brothers and sisters live with dignity.

Each year, the St. Francis community embraces one or two of our Catholic Social Justice Principles and creates a theme. The theme helps us educate our students about one of the best-kept secrets of our faith, Catholic Social Teachings. This year’s theme encompasses the principles of Solidarity and the Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers.

Holy Spirit, guide us toward communion, sustain us with the love needed for the conversion of hearts, the faith to believe that healing is always possible, and the understanding that reconciling injustices creates peace and goodness. St. Francis of Assisi – Pray for us. St. Clare of Assisi – Pray for us.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE DEAR ST. FRANCIS COMMUNITY, The pages of this Annual Report edition of our Pax et Bonum magazine contain yet another chapter in the story of St. Francis Catholic High School. It’s a story that began 79 years ago and continues today through the commitment and generosity of those individuals, businesses and foundations listed within these pages. It’s a story that celebrates the deep connections that exist within our community. It’s the story of all of us working together to form women who change the world. While we are sad to see them go, the Class of 2019 was an outstanding group of young women who left an indelible mark on our community. You’ll enjoy some of the photos of the end of their St. Francis journey, their words of inspiration and encouragement to each other, and highlights of the recipients of the highest awards we give. The 2018-19 school year included successful new endeavors and celebrated successes of the past. Modelled on St. Francis’ pillars of service, excellence, leadership and faith, our inaugural SELFe Event was a sold-out afternoon of empowering women of all ages to be their best selves. We’re excited to bring the SELFe Event back this year with keynote speaker Valorie Burton on Sunday, October 20th (see page 35). We also brought a lot of women back to campus to celebrate their successes recognizing our first Athletics Hall of Fame class this spring. Alumnae from the classes of 1981 to 2009 were celebrated for amazing accomplishments both during their time at St. Francis and after (see pages 48-49). We’re excited to see what is ahead for 2019-20, and especially for our alumnae community to come back to campus to share their professional lives with our current students on Career Day (see page 39). As we look back on 2018-19, we continue to see expanded opportunities for young women to attend St. Francis Catholic High School and become part of this faith community. We remain committed to expanding tuition assistance; this past school year alone we awarded $1.6 million in tuition assistance to our students. Of course we can’t stop here. Our future plans call for providing more financial aid along with expanding our campus to address continued growth in enrollment and program offerings. We can’t allow a lack of vision or funds to stand in the way of a St. Francis education for those who wish to call SFHS “home.” At the end of another year of growth and success, we thank you for the impact you have made on the lives of those who walk our campus each day. Through your generosity, the community of St. Francis continues its mission of empowering the next generation of women to go out and change the world. And that is certainly something to celebrate!

In the spirit of Pax et Bonum,

WELCOME TO OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS ST. FRANCIS IS BLESSED WITH AN AMAZING BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND ADDING NEW MEMBERS IS AN EXCELLENT WAY TO FURTHER OUR MISSION OF EDUCATING YOUNG WOMEN WHO CHANGE THE WORLD. WE ARE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THE ADDITION OF TWO NEW BOARD MEMBERS:

JENNIFER O’BRIEN COOLEY ’89 Jennifer, a St. Francis graduate of the class of 1989, has worked in commercial real estate, commercial/industrial construction, and real estate lending throughout her career. She joined the Board of Trustees in 2019 with a desire to give back to her community and support an organization that creates strong, independent, intelligent women. Her vision includes planning to help St. Francis grow into a fiscally, educationally, faithfully, and emotionally strong high school to serve all young women in the Sacramento area. “I hope that my service will help St. Francis continue to develop as a great institution that educates young women to be better people that strive to lead and serve in whatever capacity or forum they choose.”

CELESTINE SYPHAX Celes is Co-Owner/Partner of Syphax Strategic Solutions, a corporate advisory firm focused on executive leadership development, strategic planning and business development strategies for the financial services, real estate development, and healthcare sectors. She and her husband Scott are parents to three children, including St. Francis graduate Jade ’15. Celes has served both the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and the California State Department of Social Services as an analyst assisting in the recovery and aid services to victims of natural disasters. “My vision for the board is that it becomes as inclusive and representative of our Catholic faith and Dioceses’ congregations and mirrors the rich cultural diversity of the Sacramento community as a whole. In embodying the riches of our parishes and our community the Board will be well positioned to maximize our mission in service to our faith and the young women St. Francis empowers.” St. Francis Catholic High School follows a Policy Governance model for its Board of Trustees. Often called the Carver model, Policy Governance focuses on the Board’s strategic leadership in establishing the organization’s purpose and goals. Within defined limits, the board entrusts the CEO to execute the mission and accomplish the goals, while ensuring accountability of the Board to the Troubie community and of the CEO to the Board.

THANK YOU! Two amazing Board Members have finished their terms this year, Mrs. Kathleen Deeringer and Mrs. Mary Norris. Kathleen joined the Board of Trustees in 2013 and served as Board Chair for the past two years. Mary served on the St. Francis Advisory Board for six years and was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2013. Thank you for tirelessly giving your time and resources; we are grateful for your commitment to serving St. Francis Catholic High School!  FALL 2019 5

BACCALAUREATE & COMMENCEMENT

8

Our graduates and their families gathered together in celebration on May 22nd for the Baccalaureate Mass on campus and May 23rd for the Commencement ceremony at Memorial Auditorium.

VALEDICTORIAN

BRYNNE BURROWS Brynne Burrows, a graduate of St. Alban’s Country Day School, has lived the Four Pillars throughout her four years of high school, serving our school and her class with love and devotion. She is kind, humble, and appreciative of the gifts God has bestowed upon her. Brynne has been a Retreat Team Leader, twotime Service Trip volunteer, Kairos Director, Ambassador Leadership Board member, and a Sports Medicine Intern. She is Co-President of Life Skills Club and involved in the Medicine and More Club. Brynne received St. Francis’ highest student honor, the Pax et Bonum Award, and she will be attending the University of California, Los Angeles in the fall. The following is Brynne’s valedictory address given at the Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2019 on Thursday, May 23. Good afternoon and welcome Bishop Soto, Board of Trustees, alumnae, faculty and staff, families, and my fellow graduates. With great joy and gratitude, I stand before you today, representing the 239 Troubies of the Class of 2019. We have imagined this day, our graduation, in this beautiful Memorial Auditorium, since we first arrived on campus as freshmen. Maybe even before then, when we attended a sibling’s graduation or took the placement test as 8th graders. With the help of our parents and guardians, we chose the best education possible. What an amazing gift our families have given us. They encouraged, volunteered, chauffeured, quizzed, and prayed for us. There were ups and downs, unexpected obstacles, and a lot of hard work, but we are all here now. We are receiving a diploma from St. Francis Catholic High School that demonstrates our excellence in the classroom, service in the community, leadership among our peers, and our faith in God. Now, I ask you to imagine as a teenage girl, you are called to follow God’s vision for you. You live in a village in France, devoted to God and the Blessed Virgin Mary. You are told to seek an audience with the King, which you do, and you convince him to allow you, a 17-year old peasant girl, to lead an army into battle. You lead your country’s army to victory because of your strength of conviction and devotion. At 19, St. Joan of Arc chose to listen to God courageously. Her reward is eternal life in Heaven. Imagine as a 14 year old, you have to petition to attend school simply because you are female. You and your friends, supported by your parents in your Pakistani village, risk your safety every day to learn. At 15, you suffer a nearly fatal gunshot wound to the head while in your school van, and spend months recovering in the UK. On your 16th birthday, you speak to the United Nations General Assembly. Malala Yousafzai chose to continue to speak up and not be silent. Millions of girls will be educated because of her. Malala, at age 17 is the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. And she continues

to lead, serve and demonstrate her faith in the power of education and peace, a true model of Pax et Bonum. My point in telling these two stories is that we all have choices. We have choices, as young women, about what we will do and how we will live. Our daily routine is a choice. Our university is a choice. What we do for our career is a choice. We have been given a great advantage by our Catholic education in making educated choices. We will make a difference as ministers, teachers, nurses, doctors, engineers, pilots, actresses, political candidates, wives, mothers, and maybe even sainthood. More importantly, however, are the choices of how we treat people in everyday interactions, our attitude even in adversity, and how we lead. From our four years on campus, we remember many instances of our classmates choosing to be selfless. From the smallest acts of kindness, to those who gave an amazing amount of time in service to others, your selflessness does not go unnoticed. We will always remember the faculty member who helped us understand a math problem, verb tense or new concept. We will remember the friend who made us feel better on a bad day, and because of this community our trust in ourselves, others, and God is deeper. We are thankful to Mr. Mendoza and Mrs. Rodgers for their tireless work in faith and practice. They lead with love every day on campus. And I am personally grateful. I am so thankful for my family for all of their support and encouragement. Mom and Dad, you taught me the importance of giving and empathy, and you constantly show me what it looks like to love others. Thank you. So my challenge to all of you as we look forward together as sisters choose to lead with love. Everyone has something to contribute to the greater good. Joan of Arc, Malala, you and me.  FALL 2019 9

Whatever situation you find yourself in moving forward, your gift is needed and you are loved for exactly who you are. Everyone’s gifts are unique, yet we are all created by the same wonderful God. It’s up to us to choose to apply the gifts He gave us intentionally. Now more than ever, your gifts are going to be vital in shaping the future of our community, society, and world. We must all ask ourselves the questions, “How do I choose to serve?” “How will I treat others?” and then take action. Knowing that we have each other, and each one of us can bring our own unique gifts to the

table, is where our power lies. As strong women, the need for your gifts and your talents will not change. So graduates: Service is a choice. Honesty is a choice. Forgiveness is a choice. Showing gratitude is a choice. Respecting others is a choice. Excellence is a choice. Joy is a choice. Loving our God and each other is a choice. Choose to serve. Choose to lead with love. I love you, Class of 2019. Congratulations!

BACCALAUREATE ADDRESS

ROSE CONLIN

Rose Conlin, a graduate of St. Mary School, was the Student Body Ministry Coordinator. She was also a two-year member of the varsity lacrosse team, a Junior Volunteer at Mercy General Hospital, Sacramento, and a member of the Ambassador Leadership Board. This fall, Rose will be furthering her Catholic education at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, majoring in nursing. The following is Rose’s address given at the Baccalaureate Mass for the Class of 2019 on Wednesday, May 22.

In the spirit and hospitality of the St. Francis Community, it is an honor, privilege, and blessing to welcome you to St. Francis Catholic High School’s Baccalaureate Mass for the Class of 2019 Dear Thumpers, family, friends, and staffulty: thank you for your love, guidance, and support throughout this crazy, four-year adventure. 1,378 – the number of days we have spent together as a class. On our first day as Troubies, we were shown the shiny white gown that we wear today and joined together in this same gym to debut a now very familiar song “At the Beginning with You.” Since then, we have belted out the lyrics countless times, maybe never realizing what they reveal. “We were strangers, starting out on a journey/Never dreaming what we’d have to go through.” Freshman year: the beginning of our journey. We learned all things St. Francis and began to make our first Troubie memories. Our unity blossomed as we celebrated our first family Mass, our first homecoming week and our first set of finals. Before long, freshman year was over and our journey continued...our St. Francis anthem played on. “No one told me I was going to find you/Unexpected, what you did to my heart.” Sophomore year: the year of change. New friendships formed and strengthened. More memories were made – taking second place in homecoming week AS SOPHOMORES, the finals week power outage, and receiving class rings at the Sophomore family Mass, all while continuing to find strength in God. In the blink of an eye, the sophomore year ended and we reached our high school intermission.

10

“When I lost hope, you were there to remind me/This is the start.” Junior year: the start of something new. ACTs, SATs, and college became a reality. Tests and projects piled higher as our time ran shorter. We learned to always be there for our Troubie sisters with the late night ‘hang in there buddy’ texts and spontaneous coffee dates. We continued to celebrate the gifts of 239 strangers-turned-sisters. We finished the year by officially being commissioned as the senior class – the newest leaders of St. Francis. “Now here we stand, unafraid of the future…at the beginning with you.” Senior year: the year of college applications and weekend adventures. Our year began together, watching the first sunrise of senior year. The big sisters and retreat leaders that we once looked up to were now us, leading other classes on their own SF adventures. October brought our final homecoming week, with first place overall; January our final Pax et Bonum Week. Skirts were no longer stiff, shirts weren’t quite as bright, and the iconic SF messy bun was finally mastered. Now, here we are together in the St. Francis gym for the very last time, celebrating our class and all of the memories we have been blessed to make. Class of 2019 – we made it! These past 1,378 days, we laughed, cried, screamed, and sang. Through it all, we have forged a bond as the class of Thumpers. I can say, without a doubt, that I would not have wanted to spend the past four years of my life with anyone else. Tonight with our family and friends let us give thanks for the chances to grow in faith, excellence, leadership, and service, and for giving us enough memories to last a lifetime! My fellow Troubies, in the end, I’m blessed to be standing at the beginning with you.

SALUTATORIAN

ANISHA RAO Anisha Rao, a graduate of Golden Hills School, was chosen by her classmates to give the Salutatory address. During her time at St. Francis, she was President for the last two years of our Girl Up Club, been involved in Model UN, Debate Club, and served as a St. Francis ambassador and Big Sister. She participated in our Kaiser internship program last summer and is passionate about educating and empowering young women. Anisha will be attending the University of Southern California in the fall. The following is Anisha’s salutatory address given at the Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2019 on Thursday, May 23.

Hello everyone! It is my honor to welcome you all to the graduation of the Class of 2019! THUMPERS! For the last four years of our lives, we have poured every ounce of our strength into reaching this moment. We have cried, we have laughed, we have stressed, we have cheered, we have studied, and we have shined. And we did all of this with an average of less than seven hours of sleep a night, so go us! Being here today in and of itself is an incredible accomplishment. You should be extremely proud of the person you have become today. High school: four years. 48 months. 208 weeks. 1,460 days. 35,040 hours. 126,144,000 seconds. The time we have spent at St. Francis marks an incredible time of personal growth in our lives. For the last four years, we have experienced so much that we will never forget: Kairos (shoutout to K73G5), free blocks with friends, daily coffee runs to Tupelo and Temple, senior sunrise, crazy St. Francis-style birthdays, those cafeteria lunch lines we love so much, dance parties in the parking lot after school, and senior sunset. Oh! I almost forgot—we also went to class. In between everything else, obviously. But of course, we would never have survived these last 48 months if not for our extraordinary support system. Parents, guardians, siblings, family, and friends, without you, we would not be sitting here today. Since day one, you have been our number one fans and our greatest role models. We will never forget all the little moments we have shared together throughout our lives: birthdays, first steps, arguments, first days of school, puberty, family vacations, and so much more. Mom, thank you for showing me what it truly means to be a strong woman. Every day, you wake up early, pack us lunch, go to work, come back, cook us Food Network worthy meals, and somehow you still have energy to be the most emotionally supportive mother I could ask for. I love you more than you know. Dad, thank you for being so encouraging of anything I’ve desired to achieve in my life. You have taught me to always be positive, to work hard, and to make time to have fun, no matter how small or silly it is. I would not be who I am today without you and I love you to the moon and back. On behalf of my entire class, I would also like to issue a blanket apology to all the parents and guardians in this room for all the times when we were the moody teenagers we all

know we’ve been. Please know that we still appreciated you so much in those moments. In short, and in the wise words of Father Arnold: we thank you, we’re sorry, and we love you. Staffulty, you have been an invaluable support to us these past years. Each and every one of those 1,460 days, you were our greatest advocates, and you believed in each of us, constantly pushing us to reach our fullest academic potentials. We could not thank you enough. By exemplifying our school year theme, “one home, one family, and one responsibility,” you are what made our St. Francis experience truly special. Mr. and Mrs. Williams, you are everyone’s favorite power couple. Thank you for making theology funky and fresh with your old-school jams. Don’t worry, we didn’t just rock out to music all the time, we actually did learn about Jesus. Your classes have truly inspired us to effect real social change in our world someday. Mrs. Sharon, thank you for always bringing your joyful and patient personality to the chemistry classroom. We will always remember laughing and learning in equal amounts during your classes. Mrs. Gluvers, thank you for mentoring us in math and in the intricacies of taxes. We look forward to the publication of your book Life Tips with Barbara Gluvers in the near future. Mrs. Ziegler, thank you for showing us the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle in PE. Your positive attitude and constant encouragement has helped us become more confident in ourselves and our abilities as young women. Ms. Kirstein, thank you for inspiring us with your love for your two favorite people: Shakespeare and Steinbeck. We will never forget that Hamlet is the key to everything. Señora Diver, thank you for sharing your love for Spanish with us. Your spirit and energy during class constantly encouraged us to be better students. Muchas gracias.  FALL 2019 11

Mrs. Moloney, thank you for always pushing us to achieve our best, even when senioritis hit and we were extremely unmotivated. We will miss your loud lectures about monetary and fiscal policy. Mrs. Watson, thank you for sharing 34 years of your passion for the arts with St. Francis. We have all been moved with joy and laughter by the creative genius your have brought out in your students. Speaking of laughter, did you know that the average person laughs 17 times a day? I didn’t. I started doing some thinking actually, and I realized that if the average person laughs 17 times a day, a St. Francis Troubie probably laughs about double that, so say 34 times a day. That means in the last 208 weeks alone, the Class of 2019 has laughed 11,831,456 times. I would say that we’ve laughed so much that we’ve already changed the world by making it just a little more joyful, and we haven’t even graduated yet! Wow, look at us--we’re such overachievers. I feel like this speech would be terribly incomplete if I didn’t mention cheese. So, cheese. Swiss. Feta. Brie. We all know it. Some of us love it. To most people, it’s a dairy product derived from milk and the weakness of every lactose-intolerant person. But, for the last 35,040 hours, the Thumpers have understood the word “cheese” to be a symbol of something far greater. Now, I see some confused looks, and I know all of you [gesture to my classmates] know EXACTLY what I’m talking about, but for everyone else here today, here’s the story: our class theme during homecoming week freshman year was the board game Mouse Trap. So when the time came for our grand, highly anticipated class entrance at the rally, we ran into the gym dressed up as cheese, mice, and mice trappers, yelling “CHEESE! CHEESE! CHEESE!” at the top of our lungs. If you can imagine 239 hyper, over-enthusiastic, loud freshmen running toward you at full speed while yelling about a cheddar, you have a pretty good idea of what it was like to be in that gym. However, what most people don’t initially realize about the Thumpers and homecoming week is how much creative thought, passion, hard work, and determination goes into every single thing we do. With hard work, we won three-point knock out at Sports Day as freshman. With determination, we won second place overall as sophomores, and made homecoming history as the first class in decades to do so. With immense creative thought, our decorations, among many other things, won first place as juniors. And at our final homecoming rally this year, we passionately cried and sang our hearts out to our most emotional class song yet. It’s little moments like these that truly define our class as the most iconic, the most spirited, the most unified, and the most authentic. We are the Thumpers of the Class of 2019, and this is an identity that no one can ever take away from us. To my classmates, my friends, my sisters: you are the most compassionate, intelligent, and powerful group of women that I know. Never let anyone tell you otherwise. You deserve to feel immensely proud of all your accomplishments. Realize that you have extraordinary talents, abilities, and personalities that will take you so far in life. Believe that you can accomplish anything you dream of doing. It has been my greatest honor to be your friend, and I am so proud to stand here, at the beginning, with you. Today does not mark the end of our 126,144,000 second journey through high school together, but rather the beginning of our lives as Troubies in the real world--as unique young women of faith, excellence, leadership, and service. It’s a continuation of our sisterhood as Thumpers, and as a class of 239 young women that will continue to live life with passion, purpose, and grace. Okay now ladies! Let’s walk out of this auditorium today, heads held high, and go tell the whole, wide world that this is THUMPER TERRITORY! Congratulations to the graduating Class of 2019! Thank you and have a wonderful day. 12

GRADUATES’ PRAYER

JULIA TURNER Lord, you have gathered us here today in celebration of the exceptional education and loving community that we have experienced over the past four years. Through our individual achievements and ultimately through your grace, we have come together in hopes of becoming women who will change the world. We ask that the profound sense of sisterhood we have shared through our time as classmates always be a source of happiness in our lives, and we thank you for the incredible opportunities which with you have blessed us. Help us to remember the lifelong friendships we have made and remind us that these connections are gifts, meant to be cherished and extended beyond ourselves. Heavenly Father, your presence instills within us a true sense of compassion, integrity, trust, and purpose. Grant that we may carry these virtues with us through the new challenges we will soon face. Ground us as we communicate your kindness and mercy to all those we meet, be patient with us as we learn to better put your Word into action, and humble us as we recognize that our successes and our failures both are occasions to glorify you. Please guide us as we continue to grow in knowledge, to develop our talents, and to serve others, that each of us may realize your plan of Truth and Goodness in the world, and that we may all manifest this plan to the best of our abilities in our future endeavors. We pray this through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. St. Francis of Assisi: pray for us. St. Clare of Assisi: pray for us.

Julia Turner, a graduate of Spring View Middle School, was chosen by school administration to represent the Class of 2019 through the Graduates’ Prayer. As a Kairos leader, Retreat Team leader, Eucharistic minister, service trip participant, and frequent visitor of the Campus Ministry office, her time at Saint Francis has largely been influenced by her growing faith. Julia will be continuing her Catholic education as part of the Dean’s Fellows program at Creighton University.

LEADING BY EXAMPLE

WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE 2018-2019 SBO TEAM WHO SHARED INSIGHTS FOR THEIR CURRENT TROUBIE SISTERS AND THE LEADERSHIP LESSONS THEY WILL TAKE WITH THEM ON THEIR JOURNEY. St. Francis Catholic High School is blessed with young women who step up and into leadership positions. The Student Body Officers (SBOs) are the leaders, communicators, organizers, mobilizers, and most importantly, the visionaries for creating the student experience on and off campus. Working together with the Class Officers, they work to promote unity among students and provide a variety of activities that enhance the development of St. Francis students and are consistent with the school’s philosophy. Working under the leadership and guidance of Mrs. Cassy McGreevy, and supported by the entire St. Francis administration, faculty and staff, these student officers develop an understanding of servant leadership, ethical standards and community building.

CAMILLE ENES: PRESIDENT

St. Michael’s Episcopal School • Southern Methodist University “After endless hours of tears, laughs, and heartbreak, being SBO President taught me to adapt to changes, that communication is key, and to make sure to take a step back and take mental pictures of my hard work and accomplishments. It was daunting to look at the SBO workload sometimes, but it was always worth it in the end. My next chapter may not have enough red and gold as it should, but the lessons I learned at SF will stay with me as I become red and blue.”

AMIRAH ROGERS: VICE PRESIDENT

Bridgeway Island Elementary • Northern Arizona University “Being an SBO has prepared me greatly for real world social issues that I will face for the rest of my life. I have learned how to speak up for myself and other people. My all time favorite thing was planning a rally. Even though it takes so much work, nothing made me more excited than running out onto that gym floor and getting hyped with the SBOs and the other students.”

EMALEE LAVEZZO: SECRETARY

Arden Middle School • Texas Christian University “The seven of us came from different schools, families, and lives. But with the diversity we faced it made us stronger. We had hard times and good times that helped us grow. I learned that it’s about putting yourself last sometimes because there are people depending on you to do your job. And that teamwork is how you are going to achieve your goals and dreams.”

SARAH PORTER: TREASURER

St. John the Evangelist School • University of San Diego “My favorite thing about being an SBO was the opportunity to give students a voice. Inclusivity is definitely one of the most important parts of being a student leader. My job really was to serve my St. Francis community and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to help everyone on campus feel valued.”

SABRINE MASARWEH: SPIRIT COORDINATOR Sierra Oaks Elementary • CSU, Sacramento

“If I were to give any advice to an underclassman it would be to walk with your held high. Starting something new is never easy, you may have anxiety or be nervous but do not let it overshadow your confidence. Stay true to yourself and your values, do not let others define who you are. I guarantee you will enjoy your time at St. Francis if you walk with your head held high and find joy in the small things. Your grades are just numbers and letters, they do not measure all the beautiful and unique things you amount to. Always remember that.”

ROSE CONLIN: MINISTRY COORDINATOR St. Mary School • Duquesne University

“Get involved, be yourself, and embrace change! St. Francis has a lot to offer from the sports to the clubs to the academics. There truly is something for everyone, so there is no need to try to shape yourself and ‘fit in’ at St. Francis. Embrace who you are...God made you to be the exact person that you are! However, four years is a long time and a lot will change in that time. Let that change happen. Welcome it with open arms. The person you start St. Francis as is not going to be the same person that walks across the Memorial Auditorium stage four years later. Do not be afraid to try something new and fall in love with it!”

KATE MacINTYRE: HISTORIAN

Leroy Greene Middle • University of California, Davis “You have to keep going. If Plan A doesn’t work out you need Plan B. And if Plan B doesn’t work out, then you are going to need some coffee and a Plan C. Sign up for clubs, play sports, audition for musicals, and get involved. Over the last four years of my high school experience every year I got more and more involved. And every year I loved it more and more. I have met so many amazing people who have left such an impact on my life.”

Gina Courey Mariann Isola ’83

Melody Goodall Maureen D’Angelo Goodall ’86

WE CAUGHT UP WITH A FEW LEGACY MOMS FROM THE CLASS OF 2019 TO GAIN A LITTLE INSIGHT INTO ST. FRANCIS - THEN AND NOW.

LIZ TURO BAGATELOS ’86: NIKA ’19 It was so wonderful to see the confidence and the life-long friendships Nika gained in her four years. I knew it was the right choice for high school when she came home from her final senior year homecoming decorating night and closed the door. She cried for hours and talked about how she didn’t want to leave St. Francis - ever! As a family, we watched Nika truly give and receive unconditional love to her Troubie sisters through all the high school trials and tribulations.

MARIANN ISOLA ’83: GINA ’19 The SFHS all-girl environment creates a culture where an individual’s development is celebrated and valued. SFHS was the right choice for my daughter as it allowed her to take center stage and develop her own voice. Gina is super confident, determined and knows she can accomplish anything from the strong academic environment that is celebrated and valued at SFHS. We are so grateful that Gina has had the opportunity to continue a family legacy of a SFHS Catholic education. Her wonderful memories of SFHS and the friendships developed are beautiful gifts that will last a lifetime. There’s just something about a Troubie that connects us forever.

STACIE FOTOS KANE ’90: KATHRYN ’19 St. Francis was a perfect choice for my daughter. She loved being at an all-girls school with a focus on community and Christ. The Kairos retreat had to be the highlight of her entire four years. All that she learned will remain with her forever. SF is a special place where girls can grow into independent, confident women that go forward to do good things. It has meant so much to my family and I to watch Kathryn grow and learn in the same place that I did almost 30 years ago.

CHRISTINA TROJA GUERRERA ’89: GABRIELLA ’19 & DANIELLA ’21 SFHS has been the perfect school for our daughters because it’s an extension of what we value and teach at home. I find the pillars of service, excellence, leadership and faith to ring very true and embody all we hope for our girls to value. The school provides the love and support for students to discover who they are and go out into the world with confidence of the beautiful women of God they are. We feel very blessed to be part of the SFHS community and are thrilled to see how our daughters have grown spiritually, academically, athletically and emotionally. SFHS is a safe place for girls to have fun, be themselves and discover who they are. The faculty, staff and coaches are supportive and genuinely care for every student. It has meant the world to us to know they are supported and loved as they are at home.

WE CURRENTLY HAVE 287 STUDENTS ON CAMPUS WHO ARE PART OF AN SF LEGACY, WHICH INCLUDES 93 AUNTS, 13 GRANDMOTHERS, 80 MOTHERS,

We would like to include legacy families from all the Sacramento all-girls Catholic schools. If a member of your family attended Loretto, Bishop Manogue, Mercy, or Bishop Armstrong and you have a current student at St. Francis, please update alumnae@stfrancishs.org.

DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT

MARYANNE KELLY

DEAR FRIENDS, AMBASSADORS, AND SUPPORTERS, Your example lives on in the Troubadours you have helped educate! As we look back on the many accomplishments and life lessons of our Class of 2019 graduates, we are humbled by the generosity of the Troubie community. A community that holds up young women and inspires them to be the best they can be through a lifetime of faith, excellence, leadership and service. Like the thousands of graduates before them, these ladies are ready to go and change the world. This Annual Report edition of the Pax et Bonum magazine recognizes all of you — current and past parents, students, alumnae, faculty and staff, and our numerous friends — for your faithful partnership in advancing the mission of St. Francis Catholic High School. With your help in 2018-19, we witnessed many wonderful transformations (see the “Because of You” infographic). The truest impact of your generosity is witnessed through a conversation with a student or alumna. They are the living beneficiaries of your love and support and are forever changed because of your example. Through your investment in the many lives and ministries of St. Francis Catholic High School, our young women have benefitted from a special place and time to explore the robust world of academic and extracurricular possibilities, make real connections with staff, faculty and their peers, and experience the freedom to be their best self. Thank you for the gifts you have shared with them. Our students learned from your example of generosity and, as a result, embraced our culture of giving which was evidenced by the $33,000 they raised for their Troubie sisters with financial need through our Day of Giving, Thankful Thursday, and painting their parking spots. They also raised $22,000 to support other nonprofits including our Ghana sister school, CRS Rice Bowl, Catholic Relief Services, and other nonprofits while completing 28,000 hours of community service. As the Class of 2019 envisioned their next chapter, the Troubie community began envisioning our own by embarking on a strategic vision effort last fall. Many of you contributed to the findings that were presented to the community in May, while others supported our effort to complete a feasibility study which garnered insights regarding the potential renderings, desired enhancements and overall long-term vision. While it’s always great to be an SF Troubadour, it’s particularly exciting now as we plan for the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s Troubies and prepare to celebrate our 80th anniversary in 2020-21. Thank you to all who gave of their time, talent and treasure to make the 2018-19 year a success. Your continued investment in St. Francis and our Troubadours helps ensure the rich tradition of a St. Francis education — academic excellence, faith formation, quality athletic and arts offerings, and a community like no other! With endless gratitude,

MaryAnne Kelly Director of Advancement

FINANCIAL INFORMATION St. Francis Catholic High School maintains a high level of fiscal responsibility and stewardship of its funds, which are monitored by the school administration, managed by the Finance and Business Office and governed through policies approved by the Board of Trustees. The annual budgeting process is led by the Director of Finance, along with the Directors and Heads of each Department, with the support of the President and the Business Office. This process results in an annual budget that is approved by the Board of Trustees. The school is audited annually by an independent accounting firm. With education costs continuing to increase each year, the St. Francis Annual Fund was established to offset the actual cost of a St. Francis education. Every tax-deductible gift to the St. Francis Fund helps cover the gap between what a family pays for tuition and the school’s annual operating costs, making a difference in the lives of more than 1,000 young women, each and every day. Recognizing our desire to meet our current operating needs while building a secure and sustainable future, St. Francis is making strides in growing its endowment. Endowed giving allows donors the opportunity to support the students and programs of St. Francis Catholic High School in perpetuity. Earnings from our endowment primarily support the tuition assistance program, which welcomes hundreds of Troubadours and their families to experience the tradition of a St. Francis High School education.

“Our two daughters are a big part of the reason why we give back to St. Francis. Although they look alike, they have different strengths and personalities. We found in St. Francis a community that would support and compliment the job we had begun as parents. Our daughters have become strong, independent and faith-filled young women who excel in their chosen fields. St. Francis provides a valued education that prepares every student for the next step in their life. But in addition to this, it prepares them for life. They graduate with a strong foundation in their faith, a firm sense of who they are and a questioning spirit that gives them the freedom to find their place in this constantly changing world. I see St. Francis graduates making a big impact out there. I have faith that their futures will greatly improve the lives of many. Our daughters are strong advocates for the people entrusted to their care. I have faith that all the young women from St. Francis will remember the love and fellowship of the family they had here and will bring that love and acceptance out into their world.”

“I love St. Francis because of the amazing community here. The teachers are wonderful, and all care about the success of every student. I knew from the moment I stepped foot on campus that I wanted to be a part of this school. What surprised me the most was how welcoming everybody was. If I ever need a hug or am having a bad day, one or more of my Troubie sisters will be there for me.”

“St. Francis has and continues to give to students everyday. The outstanding education I received truly prepared me for college and I could not be more grateful. Starting the next chapter after high school can be scary and St. Francis helped me paint a picture of what the future could look like. I give back so that St. Francis can continue preparing young women for the world.”

WHY I GIVE

ALISON MORR ’89

ALI MORR WITH HER FATHER, GUS MORR

“My parents taught me early on to value education, study and work hard, volunteer and give philanthropically, and always contribute the maximum allowed to my retirement accounts. As some unexpected major life events occurred over the past five years, I realized I needed to document my estate plans and also start planning my legacy giving to ensure my intentions were followed in case something should happen to me. In evaluating my personal history of giving, volunteering and what organizations shaped who I am today, St. Francis Catholic High School distinctly stood out. While my high school years were definitely ‘awkward’ and at times socially challenging, I made quality lifelong friendships and the school’s environment helped me gain confidence, leadership and life skills, and instilled the seeds that strengthened my faith years later. I am forever grateful for the support and encouragement of my St. Francis teachers, Sr. Catherine and the Sisters of the Sacred Heart. For all that SFHS has given me, making annual gifts and including SFHS in my estate plans has allowed me to ‘give back’ in hopes that I can help the current generation of Troubies. Naming SFHS as the beneficiary of one of my IRA’s allows my IRA to continue growing tax-deferred and will allow SFHS to receive my legacy gift in the future without the taxes that would be incurred if I cashed out or if I had named my heirs as my beneficiaries. My hope is to be able to use my required distributions once I reach age 70 1/2 for philanthropic gifts during my lifetime.”

SHARE YOUR WISDOM:

CAREER DAY & MENTORING ON MARCH 13, 2020 Without a doubt, St. Francis cultivates successful, impactful and capable alumnae – women who are changing their world. As guides to our current students, our dedicated faculty and staff work every day to provide our young women with a glimpse into the exciting and fulfilling futures that await them after graduation. But what if there were a way for them to hear those stories of success and opportunity directly, from the people who live them every day? That’s where you come in. We would like to invite you to participate in the 2020 St. Francis Career Day. This experience allows our alumnae to share their professional experiences with our current students. It’s an excellent opportunity to share your talents, spend time on campus and have lunch in the new dining hall (new to those of you who graduated before 2014)!

Be part of the working group to plan this day! We want to create an impactful day for current students and alumnae. Help us envision what that looks like, and explore opportunities to take it to the next level with a mentorship program. We need 8-12 alumnae who can be part of this working group. Contact MaryAnne Kelly: (916) 737-5033, mkelly@stfrancishs.org.

STAY LINKEDIN WITH YOUR TROUBIE SISTERS Join the St. Francis Alumnae private LinkedIn group! Whether you’re looking for a new job, relocating to a new town, or wanting to connect, your can reach out to your Troubie network for support. The 2018 class included the 1993 CIF State Championship basketball team, golf coach Diane Aguer, three-sport star Karen Lysaght Perkins ’81, volleyball and softball standout Jill Haas Benson ’93, swimmer Katie Younglove Zylstra ’98, golfer Sarah Huarte Glynn ’00, and tennis star Emani Decquir ’09. Dotty Brandenburger, who was the official scorekeeper for the softball program for 35 years, completed the class in the contributor category. “It was an amazing night,” said inductee Katie Zylstra. “I had not met a lot of the athletes so it was great to meet them and hear their stories. It brought back a lot of great memories being back on campus and I hope it inspired my daughters who were with me to come to school here.” The event featured Good Day Sacramento anchor and alumna Julissa Ortiz ’95 serving as the master of ceremonies interviewing each of the inductees. The event had originally been scheduled for November but was postponed due to the smoke conditions in the area. “Our inaugural Hall of Fame was a rousing success,” said President Theresa Rodgers. “It was a great way to honor the amazing accomplishments of our talented alumnae athletes over the last several decades. The evening was filled with celebration, nostalgia and sisterhood. I am grateful for the hard work of our Athletics Department in pulling off a beautiful event. I can’t wait to honor our second group of athletes in two years.” The 1992-93 basketball team, coached by Dave Parsh and assistant coaches Missy Anderson ’87 and Laurie Alamedia Menchaca ’87, won the 1993 CIF State title game to capture the

school’s first team state title. The team included Kellie Campbell Beck ’94, Katie Bellotti Porter ’94, Christina Delgadillo Schuler ’94, Selena Murphy Srabian ’95, Jody Lienert Thompson ’94, Lisa Devincenzi Flora ’94, Sojo Judson Auguste ’94, Mindy Bagatelos ’93, Jill Haas Benson ’93, Colleen Gately ’94, Camille Gutierrez ’93, Kim Martinez ’94, Andee Whalen Repsher ’93. Golf coach Diane Aguer led the Troubadours to a stretch six Sac-Joaquin Section titles and five CIF Northern California Regional team titles. Perkins was a three-sport standout for the Troubadours, and the only individual state champion in school history, winning the 1980 high jump title. Benson was a Sacramento Bee All-City choice in two sports in volleyball and softball for the Troubadours. Zylstra was a winner of five individual Section events and helped lead the Troubies to three Section team titles. Glynn was a threetime Sacramento Bee All-Metro selection and Bee Player of the Year. She won the 1999 Northern California Regional tournament and was part of four Section and CIF Northern California regional team titles. She capped off her collegiate career by winning the 2004 NCAA Division I Women’s individual title. Decquir led her teams to four Delta League Championships and four Sac-Joaquin Section titles as well as a third-place finish at state as a senior. Thank you to our event sponsors who helped make this evening possible: Adidas and Megan Curry ’98, Anonymous, Athletics Unlimited, Julie and Shawn Bennett Family Fund (Meagan ’13), Alan and Julie Laskin (Emily ’14, Sonia ’17), and the Law Office of Miner, Kelly, & Sette.  FALL 2019 49

FALL PLAY: “THE TEMPEST” October 18-26, 2019 In Shakespeare’s final tome, the one-time Duke of Milan is betrayed and banished, along with his daughter Miranda, to an island populated only by fairies and a wild mythical creature. Prospero plots his revenge by conjuring a powerful storm that drives his enemies to the island where he and Miranda cleverly trap the traitors to gain influence once again. Power, colonialism, and magic are on display in this fantastical Celtic interpretation featuring a female Prospero.
