String Theory is a resounding new series for St George’s autumn and spring programmes, with Balkan fiddle cosying up to banjo, bowed psaltery and mandolin, plus guitars of every shape, size and style from blues and bluegrass to a sacred choir of Fenders. The opening series is built around an extraordinary booking: Sarah jane morris’s ‘Cello Songs’ (Thu 15 Nov) sets melodies and lyrics by Tom Waits and others to the thrumming sound of a chamber group featuring five (and counting ...) cellos. Elsewhere, there’s folk-strings, Americana-strings, and even more stringed things to be announced for spring.

Meanwhile, there’s The unthanks with a live soundtrack to a new film, a St George’s debut for new folk stars Lau, and the welcome return to performing of the much-loved norma Waterson. Our jazz menu includes a rousing tribute to Jamaican genius Joe Harriott, Blue Note sax legend Greg Osby and UK hotshots kairos 4tet, with the Christmas treat of saxophonist Alan Barnes and pianist Dave newton in ‘100 Years of Jazz’.

Folk, baroque and blues from two of the most important guitarists the UK has ever produced. John and Wizz are fleetfingered instrumentalists whose back stories cover every major development in the acoustic revolution that led from skiffle to Pentangle and beyond. Tonight, in this rare duo date, they play both solo and together.

A new Barclay James Harvest tour is a cause for celebration. From its intricate, atmospheric, pastoral folk-rock to its surging symphonic anthems, this beloved progressive-rock band is still in great form, the musicianship superb and the timeless songs melodically inventive.

MOBO-winning Kairos, with composer / saxophonist Adam Waldmann joined by bassist Jasper Hoiby and pianist Ivo Neame (both of Phronesis) plus drummer Jon Scott, are the latest Brit-jazz sensation, playing rich, melodic music of great rhythmic drive and fluency. Waldmann also features in the band of London-based but Bristol-born pianist and rising star Sam Crowe, together with bassist Hoiby, guitarist Will Davies and drummer Dave Smith.

SARAH jAne mORRIS CELLO SONGS Twenty-odd years after ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’ and her gender-bending re-working of ‘Me and Mrs Jones’, ex-Communard Sarah Jane Morris presents a special new project pairing her rich, sensuous voice with the sound of a cello orchestra, as heard on her fabulous album, ‘Cello Songs’. Together with her partner in the project, pianist, cellist and 08 Book now 0845 40 24 001

arranger Enrico Melozzi, plus a hot-shot band including jazz guitar star Tony Remy and the strings of the Celestial Cello Quartet, Sarah Jane will perform the entire song-cycle, which includes Tracey Chapman’s ‘Red Car’, Tom Waits’s ‘Blue Valentine’ and ‘Blower’s Daughter’ by Damien Rice, plus compositions by herself, Boy George and Debussy. If we cheer long enough, there might be a few old favourites, too.

In a unique new project, Portishead’s Adrian Utley and his Guitar Orchestra team up with Charles Hazlewood and members of his period instrument orchestra Army of Generals, to explore music by the great Estonian mystic Arvo Pärt. The almost mediaeval tones of an ensemble of electric guitars combine extraordinarily well with the smoky warmth of old gut-strung stringed instruments: a soundworld that has never before been explored.

Following the hugely popular 2010 Christmas tour, Maddy Prior, widely recognised as the voice of English folk music, is joined once again by the Carnival Band for their unique, celebratory show of Christmas music. Mixing renaissance, modern and ethnic instruments with a refreshingly cavalier attitude and plenty of humour, they put their inimitable stamp on a range of familiar and not-so-familiar festive fare.

The most respected mother and daughter partnership in all of music appear with Martin Carthy and others to perform the songs from Norma Waterson’s sensational album ‘The Gift’, together with traditional classics and a few surprises. After a while away from the scene due to illness, this is a fabulous opportunity to welcome Norma back to St George’s and Bristol. Phil Alexander, Dave Donnelly and Dave Delarre complete the band.

GASWORkS CHOIR

Two of the UK’s most acclaimed mainstream-to-modern masters, saxophonist Alan Barnes and pianist David Newton, celebrate a century of jazz through some of its most iconic tunes, from Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn and the Great American Songbook to Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis and beyond. Last seen here playing the Cannonball Adderley role in last year’s smash-hit ‘Kind of Blue’, alto and baritone man Barnes is also a very witty front-man whose introductions provide the perfect context for the music. His long-established duo with the superb Newton may well be his most essential setting, encouraging a bare-bones approach that really allows the structure of the songs to show through. The concert is performed without amplification.

Ali Orbaum and Dee jarlett conductors Bristol’s original and best-loved community choir returns to St George’s, its captivating new live set blending intoxicating arrangements with choral discoveries. 150-strong, the choir is justly popular for the warmth and enjoyment with which it performs and the sparkling concert atmosphere it creates.
