The church will provide housing and cover the costs of utilities, training and ministry expenses. Interns will be responsible for raising their living costs (see below). You will be asked to work a 5 day week, including time set aside for personal development. You will be part of the intern team, who support each other and meet in small groups. You will be given ministry responsibility in one of the following areas: Children discipling 0-11 year-olds and reaching out to others through weekly groups, special events and building connections with primary schools Young people discipling 11-18s through Friday night events, Sunday meetings, cell groups, schools ministry and detached work Students discipling students through weekly small groups, Sunday student teas, mentoring and outreach events Worship worship leading and training worship leaders, administration of church worship Administration / project management working as part of the administration team to help all the other ministries run smoothly Alpha / welcome / local mission running Alpha, helping bless the local community and welcoming newcomers to church Other areas to be discussed as part of the application process including creative communication and design
You may want to consider working with one of our partnership placements: Working with refugees, the homeless or those in drug rehabilitation Church planting At a partner church in Leeds, or with Step Up, the Harrogate and Ripon scheme You will be enrolled on the midweek School of Theology, including: Training in discipleship and spiritual growth Understanding and interpreting the Bible Reading groups on essential Christian classics Introductions to areas including: Christian Theology, the Kingdom of God, Apologetics and Justice Some assessment will be involved, appropriate to your academic level and previous study We will ensure that you are supported through experienced line management, regular spiritual direction and the ongoing fellowship of St George’s church and staff team. The internship runs from 27 August 2014 to 2 August 2015, usually culminating with the New Wine summer festival or an international mission trip. At the end of the first year there may be an opportunity for you to stay on for an additional year.
Raising Living Costs St George’s, or the placement church, will cover housing, utility costs, training and ministry expenses. This leaves each intern to raise funds towards the cost of food, personal phone bills and other living expenses. A rough guide to this would be £3,000 over the year, or around £275 per month for 11 months. St George’s will be running a bursary scheme for occasions when personal fundraising falls short. This might be particularly useful where the intern comes from overseas, has few supporters, or very limited personal means. The maximum bursary amount will normally be £600 per term.
Interns Plus In addition to our young adult and graduate stream, we are looking to recruit adult interns of any age who would like to serve and grow through internship. Interns Plus is: A flexible way to serve – give one working day a week, serve part time or after retirement An opportunity to use your gifts, experience and wisdom for the kingdom, to develop new skills, and to reflect on where God is calling you next An invitation to a team where you can contribute and learn alongside others To discuss possibilities for service, training, housing and support, please contact Dan Tyler.
What Next? The Internship Coffee Evening is an important opportunity to meet other interns and ministry leaders you could be working with over the year. It’s also a chance to discuss where you might serve God best. Following the application deadline we will be in touch to let you know whether you will be called to interview. The interview process will include a consideration of which role might suit you best, and whether you could be placed at St George’s or with a partner church. To discuss internship

The Challenge If you are considering applying for the St George’s Internship scheme, you will need to consider the following: Am I willing to commit to a pattern of bible reading, prayer and spiritual investment? Am I prepared to work hard, regardless of the task? Am I ready to study and be stretched in my understanding? Am I willing to be accountable to others for my life and character? Am I ready to be a responsible member of a church team, and to be responsible for others? Am I excited about the kingdom of God being extended in Leeds, and committed to making it happen? If the answer is yes, we would love to hear from you.
‘Being an intern is a real privilege. It’s a fantastic opportunity to participate in God’s work in the church, and to receive great teaching and training. God is growing me so much and also showing me aspects of my character that need to change. I would definitely recommend doing the internship - you’ll grow so much in every way.’
‘God has changed me a lot this year. From quiet time and prayer to story-telling and evangelism, he made it all grow and improve. He gave me the confidence I longed for and through that I was able to share my faith with others.’
‘The intern School of Theology has been encouraging, insightful and challenging. It is a brilliant and unique opportunity to engage deeper with the Bible, with theology and with discipleship’
‘Being an intern at St George's is extremely exciting and challenging. The internship throws you in at the deep end, but provides you with the support you need to swim. It’s a really stretching process to go through spiritually, and you experience daily situations where total reliance on God is key. I would recommend the internship to anyone who feels like God is calling them to leadership, whether inside or outside of the church.’
