REPORT OF THE THIRTY-FIRST ANNUAL MEETING OF SENIOR MEMIIERS llE meeting was held in the Mordan Hall on Saturday, 16 June 1956.

Thirty-four Senior Members were present. The Chairman called on the meeting to stand in memory of eight former members of the College who had died during the year.

In her statement the Chairman gave details of the gifts and covenants received in response to the Building Fund Appeal, and said that it was unlikely that building would begin in 1957 and that a Gaudy could therefore be held next year. The College had recently received a further 4150 from the Hope Greg Will Trust, which would be paid over to the Building Fund Appeal Account, and 4151 from a final distribution of the estate of Miss Arbuthnot-Lane.

There had been changes in the Senior Common Room during the year: Miss Telford, the Assistant Bursar, resigned at the end of the Hilary Terrri owing to ill-health and Miss Major had been appointed in her place. Miss Worner, who had been Bursar since 195o, was leaving to take up the post of Bursar at Sherborne Girls' School. Her successor had not yet been appointed.

The University of Cambridge had conferred the degree of Litt.D. honoris causa on Dr. Joan Evans in June and the University of Liverpool an honorary M.A. on Miss Hilda Allen in July, on her retirement from the Principalship of St. Katharine's Training College. Mrs. Warnock, Fellow and Tutor in Philosophy, had been awarded the Green Moral Philosophy Prize. Research grants from the Leverhulme Research Trust had been received by Miss Kemp, Fellow and Tutor in History, Mrs. Leys (nee Mitchell), and Dr. Simpson. In May and June the Mistress of Girton (Dr. Cartwright) visited Russia and Poland with the Royal Society Delegation. Cecily Fortescue (1945-51) had been appointed to an Assistant Lecturership at Westfield College and Barbara Levick (1950-4) had been appointed Librarian at St. Hilda's College and was proxime accessit for the Barclay Head Prize for Ancient Numismatics. Clarice Baker (1952-5) had been awarded an open Scholarship to the London Hospital Medical School and Janet Chapman (1951-4) a Research Fellowship at Radcliffe College, U.S.A. College postgraduate awards for the year were also reported.

A number of notable gifts and bequests had been received for the Library.

The interest on 4250 given by Mr. and Mrs. Dickinson as a memorial to Judith Dickinson was to be used for the purchase of Spanish books.

The Chairman finally referred briefly to the roads controversy and said that no University legislation during the year had particularly affected the women's colleges.

Miss Lemon was re-elected as Editor of the Chronicle.

P INCIPAL'S REPORT HERE have been some changes among the administrative officers of the College during the past year. The Assistant Bursar, Miss Telford, was T obliged to resign owing to ill-health, and in the summer of 1956 the Domestic Bursar, Miss Worner, also resigned in order to take up the post of Bursar at Sherborne School for Girls. Both had been at St. Hugh's since 195o. Miss Eva Major, who has had considerable administrative experience during and since the war, has been appointed Domestic Bursar after two terms as Assistant Bursar, and Miss Annear has followed her as Assistant Bursar. There have been no other changes in the Senior Common Room. Miss Kemp was granted a term's sabbatical leave last Trinity Term and Mrs. Bleaney has been granted leave of absence for the academic year 1956-7 in order to accompany her husband to the United States where he is working at Columbia University for a year. Dr. Joan Evans had the Honorary Degree of Litt.D. conferred on her by Cambridge last summer and is to be congratulated on this latest addition to her imposing number of doctorates. Mrs. Warnock has been awarded the Green Prize for Moral Philosophy, one of the few University Prizes open to M.A.'s. Among honours and academic awards to Senior Members are the following: grants for research from the Leverhulme Trust have been made to Miss Kemp, Mrs. Leys, and Mrs. Simpson; Miss M. Richardson has obtained her F.R.C.S. ; the M.B.E. was bestowed on Miss E. P. Corner in the New Years Honours List. Mrs. Gorodetzley has been appointed Professor of Russian in the University of Liverpool. Mrs. Proudfoot has been appointed Treasurer and Lecturer in Politics at Somerville College, where she held a lecturership in Politics from 1945-7, and Miss Cecily Fortescue has been appointed to an Assistant Lecturership at Westfield College. Information about other appointments is to be found elsewhere in the Chronicle under News of Senior Members.

The number of undergraduates in residence this year is 173 ; there are also 18 graduates in residence working for research degrees and postgraduate diplomas. First Classes were obtained in the Final Honour Schools last summer by Dorothy Jameson (Chemistry, Part II) and Margaret Rochat (Mathematics). Eileen Ross obtained a First Class in Mathematical Honour Moderations. Our young graduates have also obtained a number of distinctions. Clarice Baker has been awarded the Theodore Williams Scholarship in Pathology and has won an entrance scholarship to the London Hospital Medical School. Barbara Wardle has been awarded the Henry Oliver Beckit Prize in Geography and Barbara Levick, who has been appointed Librarian at St. Hilda's College, was highly commended for the Barclay Head Prize for Ancient Numismatics. D.S.I.R. grants for research have been awarded to Dorothy Jameson and Margaret Rochat. Our new Elizabeth Wordsworth Student is Gwynneth Matthews, who obtained a First Class in the Final Honour School of Literae Humaniores in 1951 and the degree of B.Phil. in 1954. She has returned to St. Hugh's from Exeter University where she has been Assistant Lecturer in Philosophy for three years. Our second Rawnsley Student, Hanna Swiderska, is of Polish origin, but has been in England since 1947, and is a graduate in History of Birmingham University. The Yates Senior Scholar, Sheila Abercromby, read History at Edinburgh followed by courses of training for teaching and for the Certificate in Religious Education ; 8

she is a medallist in Biblical Studies. Both the Mary Gray Allen and Moberly Scholars are mathematicians: Jillian Beadwood (Mathematical Honour Moderations Class I ; Mathematical Finals Class II) and Margaret Rochat (Class I in both Mathematical Honour Moderations and Finals) respectively.

The University has abolished the limitation on the number of undergraduates who may be in residence at the Women's Colleges and has deleted from the Statute 'Of Women Students' all reference to a specified ratio of women to men undergraduates. It is nearly thirty years since the number of women undergraduates was limited. The debate in Congregation took place in the Sheldonian Theatre on 14 June 1927 and the Statute limiting numbers was agreed to by 229 votes to 164. The limitation was the result of misgivings aroused in the University by the rapid increase in the number of women in residence after the granting of degrees to women in 1920. The Statute limited the number of undergraduates who might be in residence at Lady Margaret Hall and St. Hugh's College to 16o each; at Somerville College and St. Hilda's College to 15o each, and at the Society of Home Students (now St. Anne's College) to 220. The total of 840 was roughly one-quarter of the total of men undergraduates at the time, and the Statute also laid down that no application for the admission of a new Society to the privileges of the Statute might be entertained unless the average number of women in residence over the preceding three years was less than one-fourth of the number of men by more than 16o. Although the limitation of numbers was disliked on principle by the women, it was not a practical impediment to the women's colleges at the time. The expansion had reached its highest point and was beginning to recede, and the quotas set down for each college were in each case ten more than the numbers permitted by the colleges' by-laws. The bitterness of the College's debate, however, was an unpleasant reminder of the strength of the hostility still felt towards the women's colleges in the University. In 1948, when the circumstances were very different, the women's colleges asked the Hebdomadal Council to increase the permitted numbers. This request was due to increased pressure on places, owing to the change in the educational system brought about by the Act of 1944 and to the greatly increased number of State and Local Education Authority Scholarships, and to the financial needs of the colleges. The ratio of women to men had completely altered and, far from being 1 to 4, was nearer I to 7 in the inflated University of the immediate post-war years. A modest increase of the quotas of the four residential colleges to 18o each and of St. Anne's to 25o was allowed. The change was opposed, but the opposition only mustered Ei votes to 228. Some further changes have taken place since, due to the changed status of St. Anne's. As a result the quota for St. Anne's was lowered to 23o and that for each of the other colleges raised to zoo. All graduates of other universities reading for a research degree also became extra numerum. The final abolition of the quota was moved in Congregation by the Warden of Wadham on 29 January 1957, and was agreed to without a division. The attendance was small as no notice of opposition had been given, and those present were mostly women. The quota has been a definite discrimination between men and women and, for that reason, one is glad to see the end of it, but its abolition is unlikely to have much effect on numbers for some years to come. On this point references in the Press have been somewhat misleading. Lack of accommodation limits numbers quite as effectively as a University Statute. Neither St. Hugh's nor St. Hilda's have yet reached the figure of zoo allowed them by the quota and 9

both colleges will need to build before their numbers can be raised to that level. More buildings are urgently needed by St. Hugh's and it was for that reason that the Building Appeal was made to Senior Members in 1955.

A second report on the Building Appeal is being sent out with this number of the Chronicle but I should like here to elaborate certain points raised in that report. The position as regards numbers and accommodation at present is as follows: of the 173 undergraduates in residence this year Jot have rooms in the College buildings, 53 are accommodated in five houses and a cottage within the College precincts, 19 are in lodgings. Those in lodgings are either graduates of other universities, undergraduates of mature age, or those in their fourth year. The number of those who can be put into lodgings varies from year to year but is unlikely to be more than twenty. The lodging situation is in any case difficult; it is almost impossible to increase the number of lodgings on which we can rely and very difficult even to keep it at its present level. Hostesses who give up taking students can rarely be replaced. For financial reasons undergraduate numbers of about 17o are not satisfactory and an additional 3o would be a great advantage. Educationally there would be no difficulty in increasing our numbers up to a total of zoo. Anything above zoo would almost certainly require an increased teaching staff and this is not at present envisaged. The College should, however, aim at reaching zoo within a reasonable period. Our immediate building plans, which will be carried out in 1958, will give us an additional twelve rooms; there are possibilities of obtaining possession of another of the houses of which the College is ground landlord and this would provide seven or eight more. Small separate houses, however, although they have some advantages as regards amenities, have serious disadvantages from the point of view of running costs, administration, and discipline. One more separate unit is feasible, but we ought not to increase the number further unless we can in some way join two or more of them by building between them and so both increase rooms and decrease the number of separate buildings. This is an architectural and financial problem which has not yet been seriously considered but which should be considered when once the 1958 building programme is completed and paid for.

As has been reported in the daily papers, the Ministry of Education is altering its policy with regard to postgraduate awards in Arts subjects. From October 1957 it will no longer supplement university and college postgraduate studentships and scholarships nor will it renew State Scholarships for purposes of research. Instead it is proposing to give each year up to 26o State Studentships whose holders will be expected to work for research degrees. Application will be made through the universities and colleges and applicants may apply in the year in which they take their final examinations or after they have graduated up to a certain maximum age. The Minister will have the help of an advisory committee of nine persons engaged in university teaching and administration and representing different branches of study. It is impossible to foresee how this system will work out in practice and whether it will lead to an increase or decrease in the number of our own young graduates who go on to research. It will, however, definitely affect the College's post-graduate awards which will no longer be supplemented by the Ministry. The College has five post-graduate awards: the Elizabeth Wordsworth Studentship (435o) which has never been supplemented by the Ministry; the Rawnsley Studentship for Czech or Polish Studies (43oo) ; the Yates Scholarship for Theology (4zoo) ; the Mary Gray Allen Senior I0

Scholarship (4 oo), and the Moberly Senior Scholarship (45o). The first three are endowed awards and it should be possible to increase their emoluments out of the relevant Trust Fund ; the conditions are, in fact, normally reviewed each time they are advertised for award. The Mary Gray Allen and the Moberly Scholarships are not endowed and their emoluments are paid out of revenue. They are the two awards of most use to the young graduates, as there are no restrictions on subject and they are usually held by persons of B.A. standing. The Mary Gray Allen Scholarship is open to graduates of any British University and is renewable for a second year; the Moberly Scholarship is confined to St. Hugh's graduates and is not renewable. Without supplementation they will clearly be of less use than they have been in the past and the College will reconsider the position during the coming year.

A Sherry Party for members of the Association took place on Saturday, 29 September 1956, at Queen Elizabeth College, Campden Hill. The numbers attending were less than in 1954 but reached about sixty. The occasion was a very enjoyable one and our thanks are due to the Principal and staff of Queen Elizabeth College for the excellent arrangements.

MHE J.C.R. has shown increasing interest in College affairs this year.

1 Attendance at General Meetings has been good and last year's two newly formed societies are flourishing. The Erinyeans—a joint debating society with Pembroke College—still debate regularly. The Dramatic Society did well last Summer in giving the only college production that made a profit.

In Michaelmas term the society came fourth in O.U.D.S. Cuppers.

J.C.R. funds have been in a sorry state throughout the year and it has been necessary to raise the subscription in this Hilary Term to 27s. 6d. instead of the usual 255. in order to cover the cost of punts in the summer without going bankrupt. The only advantage (if such it is) in having so little money is that the J.C.R. is deprived of the opportunity to haggle over the purchase of new equipment so that meetings are considerably shortened. It has been an unpleasant but a very necessary job for the treasurer to keep saying 'no', although there is still about £6o put aside for a new picture which the committee hope to buy in the near future.

Several extraordinary meetings have been called during the year, the most notable being to discuss the best method of helping the Hungarian refugees whose plight aroused much strong feeling and sympathy in Oxford. A collection throughout the College achieved the worthy total of £56. 1 os. od. which was donated to the Hungarian Student Scholarship Fund. St. Hugh's also provided a more unusual gift by knitting patchwork blankets. It became a familiar sight to see undergraduates carrying half-made squares round with their work, knitting in the queue to see Matron, knitting over coffee at night, 15

knitting at tea parties—blue squares, green squares, black squares, white squares—squares in all the colours of the rainbow all six inches by six inches.

Then came the task of sewing them together and at 84 squares per blanket a total of six blankets was eventually completed.

Three people are to be congratulated on bringing distinction to the College academically. Dorothy Jameson and Margaret Rochat gained Firsts in Chemistry and Mathematics finals respectively. Both have remained in Oxford to do research. Also, Eileen Ross gained a First Class in Mathematics Honour Moderations.

We have held two College dances during the year. The dance in the Trinity Term was enthusiastically supported and turned out to be a great success, so much so that a profit was made. However, the Christmas dance ran at a loss due to much smaller numbers: but the hard work of the committee ensured a very pleasant evening. It has since been decided to have just one dance in the Trinity Term.

St. Hugh's night followed the usual routine; the S.C.R. were invited to the J.C.R. for coffee after formal dinner and then everyone relaxed at the Freshers' entertainment in the Mordan Hall. An odd mixture of tunes from Gilbert and Sullivan based on the story of Dido and Aeneas was performed with enthusiasm and was warmly received.

In addition to the annual Carol Service, informal carol singing in the Mordan Hall made a very happy evening in which S.C.R., J.C.R., their guests, and Scouts all joined. A glorious log fire and flickering candlelight was a fine setting for the willing voices ably led by a group from St. Edmund Hall. Such occasions are especially valuable in providing an opportunity to meet the College Scouts and the completely informal atmosphere made the evening truly memorable.

From carol singing we come to spring through a very mild winter; so mild that no one has suffered from raw legs (usually acquired by cycling up the Banbury Road in a bitterly cold wind) and so mild that one has discovered flowers in our ever-beautiful garden that one never knew existed because they usually appear in the vac. So mild that many people are already working outside in the sunshine—a gentle reminder that the inevitable Schools will soon be here.

GAMES EPORT, 1956-7 T. HUGH'S has maintained its high position in University games this year and altogether eighteen blues have been won by members of the Q College.

As in past years, the University Lacrosse team has been well supported by St. Hugh's with four members playing. Susan Mansergh and Pat Della-Porta, this year's captain and secretary, and Susan Burdett, last year's secretary, were joined by Mary Henkel, who is to be treasurer next season. Amelia Langford, who has played in several matches, was treasurer this season.

The netball contingent from St. Hugh's has continued last season's success.

Margaret Hancox, the captain, and Jo Johnson were joined by Jean Holmes i6

and Maureen McKaig who will be secretary and treasurer next year. Of the fourteen people in the University 1st and and teams, eight were from St. Hugh's and this undoubtedly helped us to win the College Cuppers for the second year in succession.

In spite of the fact that the College can produce a full hockey team, Wendy Greenfield, who is next season's secretary, was the only blue from St. Hugh's this year.

As last year, Clare Richardson and Susan Burdett again formed half of the University Table Tennis team, and Clare Richardson was the captain. The University Club's newly acquired table is now being kept in the Mordan Hall, and this should prove a great incentive to table tennis players in St. Hugh's.

St. Hugh's now has three representatives in the University Swimming team. Anne Saunders, who was a blue last year, has now been joined by Elizabeth Smith and Susan Outhwaite.

Susan Burdett and Helen Dales again played in the University Cricket team, and were captain and secretary respectively.

We had two representatives in the University Tennis team last season: Margaret Hancox, last year's captain, and Pat Della-Porta, who will be captain this year. With these two as well as Jo Johnson, who was first reserve last year, and a promising first-year player, the College should be well represented again next term.

A LETTER TO THE EDITO Nov. 1956

Dear Miss Lemon, I went to South Africa in February 1956, where I stayed in Durban with Mary Challans, who was up from 1925-8. She is now, as I expect you know, a well-known novelist under the name of Mary Renault. She has written also a number of plays for the South African Radio, and is an active member of the Black Sash Movement. She has a charming house on the edge of the Indian Ocean, overlooking Durban Golf Course. During a subsequent visit to Cape Town I was able to see a number of performances, notably a production of La Traviata sung by the Eoan Group (all Cape Coloured) in Italian, which was really superb. I also saw the University Ballet Group, which sends so 24

many dancers to Sadler's Wells, and a performance of sketches and dances

by Zulu actors at a Coloured Drama Centre. The University Little Theatre, which is a flourishing centre of drama, was putting on a play by a young South African when I was there, one of the few dealing courageously, even if not very expertly, with the problems of the white people, English versus Afrikaans. The young author, Cecil Jubber, has been awarded a bursary for study in England, and is working at the B.B.C. His work may mark the emergence of the local South African playwright in English (there are already good ones in Afrikaans, and poets also) writing on local material, which would be an excellent thing, as the South African theatre at the moment tends to rely too much on imported West End and Broadway successes. I was asked to give two lectures on the theatre to the University Drama Department, and also two broadcasts.

People interested in the history of the theatre may like to know that the English Society for Theatre Research last year held a most successful Conference in London, which was attended by delegates from 21 nations, on the problems of international research and exchange of material. This resulted in the foundation of an International Federation for Theatre Research, which met in Paris in July 1956 to draw up a constitution. Our inaugural meeting will be held next year in Venice, in the early part of July. The Federation will also publish a quarterly bulletin. I have already found the new Federation useful in preparing the Supplement to The Oxford Companion to the Theatre (with illustrations) which I hope to publish next April, as it facilitates the getting of material from foreign countries. If anyone is interested, I will gladly send them particulars.

MRS. CARTER (J. H. Wilkinson, 1947), M.A., is resigning her appointment at the School of Oriental and African Studies as from October 1957 and is going to join her husband in Livingstone, Northern Rhodesia, where he has a teaching post, but she hopes to continue working on Bantu languages.

He was the first man to run the Three Miles (for Cambridge) in the University Sports in under fifteen minutes—a record he held for twenty years—and was the first Chaplain to the R.N. College, Osborne. v. C. HORNE, M.A. (191 I), has retired from the County Grammar School, Guildford, and now lives at St. Leonards-on-Sea. MRS. MRS. LUSCOMBE (A. C. M. Wickham, 1948), M.A., B.M., B.CH., was Senior House Officer in Anaesthetics at South Devon and East Cornwall Hospital, Plymouth, from March to September.

J. D. McCALL, M.A. (1943), was appointed Senior French Mistress at the Collegiate Girls' School, Leicester.

MRS. McCALLUM (F. M. E. Macdonald, 1936), M.A., B.sc., was appointed a Demonstrator in Social Biology in the University of Melbourne as well as a Demonstrator in Zoology.

MRS. MACKENZIE (N. C. Carter, 1914), M.A., has been reappointed to the Examinations Board of the College of Speech Therapy, and continues to hold the office of Chairman of that board. She is still a member of the Council of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and has been reappointed Chairman of the Fellowship Advisory Board. She is also a member of the Advisory Board on Nursing Education of the Royal College of Nursing and a member of the Education Committee of the Royal College of Midwives.

H. S. M. MACPHERSON, B.A. (1951), has been a Medical Research Assistant with the Medical Research Unit at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford, working with Dr. Janet Vaughan, since September.

V. M. MACPHERSON, M.A. (1908), is a Governor of St. Audries School, West Quantoxhead, Somerset; of Hedge End Secondary Modern School, Hants; and a Manager of Curdridge Primary School, Hants.

MRS. MANIFOLD (H. F. Bloodworth, 1937), M.A., has been Biology Mistress at Oriel Girls' School, near Cheltenham, since January 1955.

MAYO, B.A. (1948), is continuing to work as a free-lance journalist writing short stories and articles for magazines and provincial newspapers. She is doing research for a book on London.

E. M. MELLES, M.A. (1939), was appointed in June to the Overseas Department of the Ministry of Labour and is now engaged on work concerned with Labour and Social conditions in all countries abroad, including the reception of foreign delegates.

MRS. MICHELL (C. H. D. Dawson, 1945), M.A., has moved to Liverpool where her husband has been appointed Vicar of St. George's, Huyton.

MRS. MIDGLEY (C. A. Gaminara, 1934), B.A., was appointed Chairman, Delhi Commonwealth Women's Association.

M. E. MIST, B.A. (1951), was Assistant History Mistress at South Hampstead High School for Girls, 1954-6.

MRS. MOORE (M. D. B. Seaton, 1940), M.A., became Private Secretary to two gentlemen who have recently formed a lumber wholesale company in Vancouver, TransContinental Lumber, Limited.

P. S. MOORE, B.A. (195o), went to Canada in October for one year. She is taking a post-graduate course in Anglo-Saxon at the University of Toronto, holds two readerships (i.e. marks essays and interviews some of the undergraduates), and teaches at St. Joseph's College (a High School).

J. D. PEACOCK, B.A. (1951), was awarded a James Anderson Prize in elementary clinical medicine in the year 1955-6.

MRS. PECK (S. W. Glenister, 1943), M.A., was promoted in June to the post of Supervisor, Photo Files, in the Films and Photographic section of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, Rome. She resigned in December and left Rome after just over four years with F.A.O. to be married.

A. S. PENNY, B.A. (1952), was appointed Junior History Mistress at Leigh Girls' Grammar School, Lancs., in September.

A. C. PERCIVAL, M.A. (1921), continues her part-time work at Trent Park and Hornsey College of Art and also takes evening classes, including one at H.M.P. Holloway, and does free-lance lecturing.

LADY ANNE PERY, M.A., D.PHIL. (1947), was appointed a Lecturer at the Imperial College of Science and Technology.

MRS. PHILLIPS (M. B. Pritchard, 1940), M.A., started as a part-time Biology teacher at Longmore's Secondary Modern School, Hertford, as her 31

daughter now goes to school, but before the term even began she was persuaded to teach full-time.

MRS. PICKSLEY (Ann Finding, 1952), B.A., was appointed Personal Secretary to the Commercial Manager of the South-Eastern Gas Board in March.

M. J. PIZZEY, B.A. (1953), was a temporary assistant in the East Midlands Regional Library Bureau from August to September, and since October has been Cataloguing assistant in the Leicester City Library.

MRS. POCOCK (S. M. Foster, 1939), M.A., was appointed General Secretary of the Crafts Centre of Great Britain in May 1951.

J. A. PONTREMOLI (1945), is now Mrs. Roddam and lives in London.

M. J. PORCHER, M.A. (1 91 0), among a number of other voluntary jobs is U.M.C.A. Secretary for Cheltenham deanery and representative of her parish at the Gloucester Diocesan Conference.

ANN PRIESTMAN, B.M., B.CH. (1949), who was House Surgeon and House Physician at Black Notley Hospital, Essex, is now O.H.S. at the Annie McCall Maternity Hospital, London, S.W. 4.

MRS. PROCTER (P. M. C. Green, 1946), flew home from Tanganyika for Christmas and will remain in England till June when her husband's leave is up.

MRS. SINKER (J. M. Bullen, 1945), M.A., writes that she and her family left Achimota finally in June. Her husband is now reading for an Engineering degree at Cambridge.

SISTER ELSA (E. M. Henry, 1923), M.A., writes that as St. Peter's Secondary School, Rosettenville, Johannesburg, was being closed in December, she was being transferred to St. Augustine's School, Penhalonga, Southern Rhodesia, where secondary education for Africans is being developed very rapidly.

The Sisters are working there with the Community of the Resurrection.

MRS. SMART (Joyce Graham, 1945), M.A., was employed as a confidential secretary in the Gold Coast Police, Ho, Togoland, from May 1955 to February 1956. Her husband has now left the Gold Coast Government Service and has taken up an appointment as Lecturer in the Education Department of Reading University.
