11 THE CONSTITUTION OF ST. HUGH'S COLLEGE. I have been asked to write some explanation of the reasons why St. Hugh's Hall is now St. Hugh's College, and to show in what ways the change of name is also a symbol of solid gain. I feel unfit for the task, as I have a very unlegal mind, and find it difficult to grasp the details or understand the language of any formal documents.

But, loving St. Hugh's as I do, I will try my best to satisfy the demands of the Editor.

I suppose the fundamental difference between St. Hugh's Hall and St. Hugh's College is, that the one was a private venture, the other is a public trust. The old " Deed of Trust " was hardly more than a legal agreement between the four Trustees who provided the capital which was necessary at the first start, and those who were, with them, responsible for the management of the Hall. (The four original Trustees were Miss Wordsworth, Mrs. Romanes, Mr. Wardale, and Mr. Gay.) The present "Articles of Association " place St. Hugh's College on a much wider basis. The trustees have vanished. The new Constitution is no private agreement, but has been submitted to the Board of Trade, has been officially authorized after careful examination and criticism, and cannot be changed in any detail without reference to authority. The Board of Trade may seem an odd source of authority in the case of a College. But it is the only possible way of incorporation, except the very rare and difficult way of obtaining a Charter from the King in Council.

Somerville College was incorporated under the Board of Trade, and St. Hugh's has followed the same course.

St. Hugh's College gains, by the change in its constitution, a more stable financial basis, and a much wider and more democratic constituency. It has a body of members, large already (more than 7o student members in this first twelvemonth), and likely to increase steadily as the years go by. All have the right of attending and voting at General Meetings ; all have their share of influence in electing the Council by which the fortunes of the College are guided.

In the old days the governing body was a close corporation, and co-opted members at its own will and pleasure. Membership in it was a life-long privilege, and there was no representative of the students until in comparatively recent times. Now there is a definite scheme by which, each year, six members of the Council retire from office, and must be re-elected if they are to remain in authority.

Of these six vacant places, three are filled according to the votes of the members. In the course of four years therefore, the members elect half the Council, a very real possibility of influence. Careful

12 provision is made by the new Constitution for maintaining on the Council a right proportion of men and women, of residents,' and of members of Congregation. It also rules that the Hebdomadal Council should appoint a representative, and that all members of the Council must be members of the Church of England.

In these, and many other ways which might be explained much more clearly than I am competent to explain them, the new Constitution gives dignity, stability, and permanence to St. Hugh's. We hope that it adds to the likelihood of its receiving generous gifts and benefactions from those who are willing to bestow their wealth on great educational bodies. Endowments of this kind are sorely needed by all the women's colleges in Oxford ; and St. Hugh's, like the others, is cramped for want of them, and can only give such remuneration as is quite absurdly inadequate in return for the devoted work of some of the ablest women in England. But I hope and believe this will not always be so. Every year there are more people in the world who know what is meant by the education of women at Oxford, and especially with what enthusiasm and love its old students remember St. Hugh's College, and own their debt to it.

THE GAUDY, 1912.

The Gaudy was held from Thursday, April 25, to Saturday, April 27.

Many years were represented, and many were the wishes expressed that one or other absent old student were present.

On Thursday evening the Library witnessed an unwonted scene, when students of various generations assembled, not for work, not for hall meeting, not even for the terrors of Sharp Practice, but instead to take part in the frivolities of Dumb Crambo and Clumpo On Friday morning we tried to feel as much as possible like present students, a feeling already firmly established in the minds of many of us who were staying in College, and were awakened by the familiar bell ; some read at the camera, while others found that the warm and sunny morning proved favourable for river picnic.

The important feature of the afternoon was the Second General Meeting of the Council and members of the College, when those who had decided to become members formerly signed the register, on which condition alone were they admitted to the meeting.

The business of this meeting was to elect three Council members, and in so doing we exercised for the first time our privilege of securing

13 direct representation under the new conditions of incorporation of the College. Three such Council members will be elected by us each year. The Treasurer then read the Report and Statement of Accounts, when many of us realized for the first time that as yet we have not sufficient capital fund to make us self-supporting.

In the evening we met for dinner in Hall, and afterwards for Chapel. Many of us saw the new Chapel for the first time, so were greatly impressed with the improvement on the•old one, which had grown to be quite inadequate for our present members. The Social afterwards was a valuable opportunity for conversation.

On Saturday a Club Meeting was held, and the arrival of those present students who had been able to get up to Oxford in time, made it difficult for some of us to distinguish between the influx of the present and the reluctantly outgoing past—old and new felt delightfully one.

It was decided to make the Spring Club Meeting in Oxford a permanent institution, and to change the date of the summer meeting in London to the last week before the October term, so as to leave longer time between the two meetings.

MINUTES OF CLUB MEETINGS. The 22nd General Meeting of the Club was held at 3 p.m. on April 27, at St. Hugh's College. Miss Moberly presided.

I. The Minutes of the last Meeting were read and signed.

II. The Report of the Committee on the Memorial Tablet was then read, and members gave donations towards the Z5 still required.

III. The following motion was proposed by Miss Dobbs and seconded by Miss Godwin :—" That the names and addresses of the various Treasurers be inserted in the Club Paper, together with the dates nn which the subscriptions are due." It was carried unanimously.

14 IV. A motion was then proposed by Miss Godwin and seconded

by Miss Tudor. It ran : " That after this year no Club Paper be sent to those members who are more than two years in arrears with their subscriptions." This was modified by an amendment proposed

by Miss Rice and seconded by Miss Ady : " That a list shall be printed in the Club Paper of the names of those members who are in arrears with their subscriptions ; " and this was carried.

V. The date of the next Meeting was then discussed. It was decided that there should still be two meetings in the year, one on the Saturday immediately preceding the Summer Term, at Oxford ; and the other on the first Saturday in October, in London, instead of in July as hitherto. It was further decided that the Accounts should be presented at the April Meeting instead of at the later one, on the ground that the Oxford Meeting would be the more representative of the two. The question as to which date would be most suitable for the elections to take place was postponed to the next meeting for decision.

REPORT OF THE MEMORIAL TABLET COMMITTEE. The Committee of St. Hugh's Club, acting as a Committee for the erection of a Memorial Tablet in the Chapel at St. Hugh's College, received designs from Mr. Sedding, and decided to accept them, with the substitution of a floriated Cross in the centre for the swan which had been at first suggested. They also undertook to arrange for the completion of the tablet, although by so doing the original estimate was exceeded, as this estimate did not provide for the change of design, the frame for the brass, the enamelled corners, and the lettering ; and they hope that the Club will sanction the additional expenditure involved, as the total expense will be certainly less than if some of the enamelled work had been done later. The Committee are making a further appeal for subscriptions in order that the deficit may be reduced as soon as possible.

16 OLD STUDENTS' SCHOLARSHIP •FUND. REPORT. The financial position of the Scholarship Fund has improved considerably during the past year. As will be seen from the Balance Sheet, the 1911 Account closed with a balance of £ 2 as. 9d., exclusive of the Capital Fund. The subscriptions for 1912 amount to 16s. 6d. at the present time, and there is some £4 still to come in. Thus there is a good hope of closing the total account for our third Scholarship (1910-12) without an appeal to the guarantors. This will be the first time that no such appeal has been necessary, as there was a deficit on both previous Scholarships.

When the above facts were placed before a Committee, which met on April 25, 1912, they decided to offer. the Scholarship again in 1913 at £30.

Owing to a kind donation from Miss Deneke, the Capital Fund now stands at As soon as it reaches i'50, the Committee hope to invest the money in a Trust Security, in order to obtain a higher rate of interest than it yields at present. The Committee are anxious to commend the Capital Fund to the good offices of Old Students, and are proposing to bring forward a resolution at the next General Meeting to the effect that donations of £5 and upward to the Capital Fund should carry the right of voting for life at all General Meetings of Subscribers. At the same time, they feel that the first consideration must still be the annual subscriptions, in order to avoid all risk of having to lower the amount of the Scholarship during the next few years.

At the first meeting of the Committee, nearly nine years ago, a resolution was recorded that : " Any subscriptions paid in the future over £30 are to be placed in the bank, till the Scholarship can be raised to £35." Let us have two aims before us. (I) To bring the Capital Fund up to £50 in 1912. (2) To make it possible to offer a Scholarship of £35 in 1916 at latest.

18 THE DINNER ON ST. HUGH'S DAY. Owing to the happy inspiration of Miss Prideaux, Miss Goddard, and Miss Sprules, who were kind enough to make all necessary preparations and to act as hostesses, twenty-four cheerful old members of the College met on St. Hugh's Day, and dined together at Gatti's Restaurant in the Strand. The majority of those present lived near at hand, but there was at least one who had journeyed from the sea coast and five from the country, and Miss Keeling was most warmly welcomed as the bringer of Oxford news. Amid the uproar of conversation there was much comparison of careers, congratulations were bestowed, condolences extended ; there were groans from training students, enthusiasm from the high schools, words of wisdom from the private schools, hopeful speeches from the suffragists.

During dinner, a letter of greeting to the present members of the College was signed by all. A vote of thanks to the hostesses was proposed by Miss Cunynghame, who expressed a hope that similar gatherings might be held yearly on this day, a hope fervently echoed by all.

THE FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN. The Federation of University Women was formed some years ago with the following objects in view :(r) To act as an organization which shall afford opportunity for the expression of united opinion and for concerted action by University Women on matters especially affecting them.

(2) To encourage independent research work by women.

(3) To facilitate inter-communication and co-operation between women of different Universities.

(4) To stimulate the interest of women in municipal and public life.

The Federation has already been instrumental in getting certain posts thrown open to women, has published a report on the opportunities for post-graduate work, and also a record of the papers, literary and scientific, written by women during the previous year, and is at the present time about to award a Fellowship for the purpose of helping in some slight degree women who are doing excellent work under considerable disadvantages. The Federation is in touch with the Association for the International Interchange of

19 Students ; the Local Associations are also co-operating with many Societies and Committees in educational and municipal work of every description.

The London Association, although possessing a strong and representative Committee, still shows a very small membership as compared with the large number of University women in and around London. It is therefore hoped that all women qualified by the possession of a degree or its equivalent, and working in London, will join the Local Association of the Federation, and thus enable it, by virtue of its numbers and representative character, to speak with authority on all questions affecting the interests of University women.

THE BISHOP OF OXFORD ON THE RECONSTRUCTION OF BELIEF. One of the great events of the year has been a series of four lectures on the " Reconstruction of Belief," given by the Bishop of Oxford to crowded audiences of men and women in the largest room at the Examination Schools. The lectures were remarkable for their expression of the speaker's deep personal conviction, and for the force with which he had seized upon great tendencies of thought in history, and concentrated their meaning in single phrases.

They were also an illustration of the method of theologians of the " Lux Mundi " school. One characteristic of that group of thinkers is the appeal made to the different sides of a complex human nature, an appeal supported by an argument which makes use of many different approaches to the central object of their thought, thus suggesting a conclusion perhaps beyond the reach of human logic.

But most striking was the clear recognition of the difficulties in the way of faith that still confront the Christian thinker, even though science and philosophy, formerly in opposition, are now advancing on lines which admit of a religious basis for life. These difficulties the Bishop shewed to be (amongst others) the common dissociation of theory and practice, the existence of evil, and the attraction of vague forms of thought, or rather of feeling ; and he urged on his hearers the necessity of vigorous positive mental effort, of moral .practice, and of the patience of faith. For he recognized

20 that neither historic fact nor mystical revelation alone, when arbitrarily separated, could carry the conviction of the Gospel story in its highest significance. But history and revelation have combined to establish Christian doctrine.

Of the four lectures the first was introductory, and marked out the true position of the inquirer, surrendering no atom of mental eagerness, and yet losing no share in the benediction of the great traditions of Christianity. This harmony was produced through the sacrifice Of "pride of intellect," while intellectual inquiry was to be free, and moral practice was to be the proof (as it had been among the Jews) of divine inspiration.

The second lecture dealt with the distinctive characters of Christianity : the moral character of God, the spiritual principle in experience, the doctrine of man as made in the image of God. The lecturer treated miracles as a form of the assertion of the moral sovereignty of God over the natural world.

The third lecture was a discussion of the nature of Christian evidence ; the lecturer held that, after the application of the critical method, the value of the Old Testament was seen to lie chiefly in the consciousness of the Prophets ; while the New Testament, subjected to the same pressure of criticism, has yielded a different result ; historical material of a high order is seen to exist there.

There is an impress of divine reality both on the facts themselves, and on the lives which were " driven round a sharp corner" by the events there recorded.

The fourth lecture, which dealt more especially with the subject of the Incarnation, and the record of the Virgin Birth, laid stress on the extraordinarily independent character of the narratives under consideration, and on the character of the Apostolic testimony which supported it.

Finally, the duty which the lecturer laid on his audience was that of intellectual decision. " It is better truly to choose wrong, and then to put your mistaken thoughts into action, and find they are wrong, and come back to the correction of your premisses, than to suffer yourself not to choose at all." 26 SENIOR STUDENT'S LETTER. DEAR OLD STUDENTS,-It seems almost impossible to realize that another year has passed, and that for seventeen of us Schools are over and our last year at St. Hugh's gone by. M. L. Gordon, who went down last year, has brought us distinction by winning the Gilchrist Studentship, and M. M. Homersham by a First Class in English. Very hearty congratulations to them both. Fourteen new members have been added to the College—five of whom are working for the History School, three for the English School, and three for the French. There is one to represent Science and one Honor Mods. ; and L. Auld, who has been up only a year, has gained the Geography Diploma, German is unrepresented ; and also, for the first time for some years past, Greats.

I suppose it must be said, in accordance with ancient tradition, that the old College Societies are still prosperous. The Philosophical Society has been dealing with the most fascinating subjects, including a series of papers in the Michaelmas Term on " Questions of the Day," and the discussion this last term of Bertrand Russell's book, " Problems of Philosophy." Sharp Practice, owing partly to inevitable outside interruptions and partly to the usual distractions of the Summer Term, has not been quite so vigorously regular as of old ; but perhaps this very fact, combined with the change by which attendance is completely voluntary after the first year, makes discussion, when we do meet, all the keener. To the O.S.D.S. St. Hugh's has contributed two Treasurers, a Secretary, and a President. The plan of inviting outside speakers has been continued, and has led to several interesting debates, of which perhaps the most remarkable have been one on "Socialism," at which Mr. Ramsay MacDonald was the central figure ; and one this last term, in which two visitors from the Serbonne took part. The debate held between Somerville College and Balliol seems to draw us closer into University life.

In Games St. Hugh's has taken a prominent part, and has contributed a considerable share to the successes of Oxford against Cambridge this year. In Hockey, for the first time in the fifteen years' history of the Cup, it was won by Oxford with a score of three to one ; and Oxford has also gained the Tennis Cup for the second year running, beating Cambridge seven matches to two.

E. de Putron has been a regular member of the United Hockey Team—to which we have also contributed three substitute players— and is Captain of the O.S. L. T. C. G. Lawson-Lewis is also one of the Oxford Six, and we have in all five members and one associate in the Club.

27 Our own record too is, I think, really one to be proud of in the first year of our life as a College. In Hockey only one match was lost the whole season, and for the first time we won the Inter-Collegiate Challenge Cup. The intense excitement of the onlookers at the final match against Lady Margaret Hall—almost greater, if it could be, than that of the players—would need Thucydides' pen to describe it. In Tennis too no match has been lost ; and only one, against the Alexandra Courts, was a draw ; so that we have kept the Inter-Collegiate Cup, which we won for the first time last year: I am afraid this seems like inordinate boasting, and games have taken up an inordinate amount of space ; but of course those of you who have not heard will wish to hear of and share in our victories. It must be added that a new Cup has been given by the Students who came up in 19o7, to he played for each year between the three Houses of the College. This year the Hall has won.

It is more than time perhaps that we turned from our own private affairs to the life of the University and of Oxford, though I do not mean to suggest that ours is not an important part of it. The fact of the Delegacy is a proof of that, and we feel that any slight inconvenience from such details of organization as the insistence on a register of residence, is a very small sacrifice in return for the closer union with the University it implies. We may learn from the first report of the Delegacy that the first year's working has been smooth.

It is almost impossible, hoWever much one had the gift, to be interesting in a letter like this about the more general events of University history. Perhaps the most striking lectures of the year have been those Bishop Gore gave in the Hilary Term to a huge audience in the Schools on " The Reconstruction of Belief."

It will be a source of great regret to all who have been able to persevere through Professor Sir Henry Jones' lectures, that he has come to the close of his splendid and stimulating series.

In Eights Oxford was fortunate, in the midst of a term with a good deal of rain, in having a week of the most perfect weather.

New College has kept its place at the head of the river. The O.U.D.S. gave us a rendering of " Julius Caesar," which, in spite of adverse criticism levelled against what was un-Shakespearean in the character-representation, is generally admitted to have been a great advance on the last two years, both in its vigour and in its admirable stage•effects. There have been other striking successes in the dramatic direction—namely, Browning's "Strafford," given by Lady Margaret in honour of Miss Lodge's twenty-first .

28 year of residence in the Hall ; and the Home Students' representation of Euripides' " Trojan Women."

At St. Hugh's too there has been more than usual dramatic activity. We have had a quaint old Shrove-tide play by Hans Sachs, and the scenes between Emma and Mr. Collins acted by the Modern Language School, in one of a series of parties given by Miss Jourdain ; and at the end of the year, at the annual gathering of the French School held this year at St. Hugh's, we were entertained with very attractive French songs, and a fifteenth century play which Miss Jourdain had discovered in the British Museum.

The second year too—not content with their success in the Michaelmas Term in "If I were King "—have just been amusing us with a most original production, " Pleisthenes and Artemisia," written by three of their own number under the nom-de plume of " Pymbershaw," a most delightful and clever conglomeration of Greek form and modern substance. The play is, I believe, to be published in true Gilbert Murray style, and is much to be recommended as a not uncertain source of mirth.

There has been one other great event in the history of our College—for I seem to have come back to St. Hugh's again—I mean the Gaudy, of which everyone has heard, put off for a year, and held at the end of last vacation in honour of the Twenty-fifth Anniversary of our Foundation. All the three Houses were filled with Old Students for part of three days ; and the verdict, so far as I have come across it, has been unanimously on the side of its complete success.

Postcards to the Editor.

Here in German East Africa we go on so peacefully from day to day, that it is hard to realize all the great movements that are going on in England. It is the rainy season now, so districting and out-school visiting mean crossing rivers, with water flowing over the stepping-stones, wading through deep pools, climbing slippery mountain paths, and occasionally getting drenched to the skin. The work is growing fast, though five years ago we only had three or four little out-schools for girls quite near by, and now we have twenty-three girls' out-schools, the farthest being about twenty miles away.

This Christmas too we had the first Conference of African Christian Women, and they actually gave their opinion on certain moot points of village and Church life—ca ira I Now we are looking forward to the autumn, when the Bishop is going to hold a ten days' mission here, which will help on the work for a long time to come.—DoRA C. ABDY. When I last sent a card to the CLUB PAPER I was just returning to S.H.C. as a don. That was three years ago, so now I feel quite an old-established institution. The History School is still large and flourishing. Its Society, the Hundred-Moot, is to meet in St. Hugh's next year, and we have been drawing up a programme of lectures and discussions on Political Thought in Italy." Many of us mourn the loss of the Italian Special and other familiar friends, which will be taken off the Statute Book after this term.—C. M. ADY. I am afraid I have no fresh news of interest, as I am still at the Godolphin School, Hammersmith, where time passes very quickly. The other day Miss Bebb, of St. Hugh's, came to see us, as her sister is on our staff.

Will D. M. Hodge please accept my congratulations on her headship ? I was so pleased to see it.—P. BIRD. I have absolutely no news to record about myself. I still live at home, and somehow or other my time seems to be fully occupied with parochial and domestic duties. I am just looking forward very much to spending a week in Oxford with friends (opposite St. Hugh's). Unfortunately term is over ; but, after all, Oxford is Oxford in term and out of term, and it will be Commemoration Week.—E. BLAMIRE BROWN. I have got a post as Secretary on the Juvenile side of the Labour Exchange— quite a nice one. I do not know where I am going yet, but I begin in September. The work appears to be that of interviewing children and employers, and fitting them together as far as possible, and it entails visiting factories and seeing parents—quite hard work, but rather interesting. Alas ! my Exam, approaches very near. I give my Exam. Lesson on Keats' "Ode to a Nightingale ! " to girls of 16 and 17 (very nice girls), and the theory part is on July 1st and xnd ; then we go on teaching till the end of July.—J. Coos%

30 The year since I left College has, for the most part, been an intensely happy one. I am growing more and more interested in my work at Queen Margaret's, which is the most delightful school I have ever seen. My one grief is that Scarborough is so far from Oxford.—E. CRICHTON. I expect it is almost too late—is it not ?—to report myself as being settled down now in London with my sister, at ro, Howley Place, W., and as teaching at Kensington High School.—E. CUNYNGHAME. Not having a p.c. to hand, perhaps this scrap of paper will serve the purpose.

For the last three years I have been occupied in a Lancashire mill-town, amid a forest of chimneys and the thumping of machinery. I am not yet a Socialist, nor do I believe that what Lancashire thinks to-day England will think to-morrow, nor am I convinced that Manchester is the pivot of the universe ; however, if I sojourn here long enough, I feel sure that all these articles will be added to my faith. To tell the truth—my narrow, Southern, conservative little soul often yearns after the dear, clean, empty South; though I trust it is being chastened and broadened by contact with the smoky, grimy, populous North. Sometimes, in fact, in exalted moods—given that there is sufficient fog to create the illusion—I see, like Whistler, chimney-stacks as campaniles, warehouses as palaces, find romance in dirt and squalor, and hear melody in the music of the clogs. My time is not wholly taken up with introspection of this nature. There is a school here at which I yearly do "nine months' hard ; " but, like all schools, it is very interesting. What a pity I had not a p.c. to curb my volubility.—I. DE CASTRO. After three and a half years in Manchester, I have just got the Mathematical post at Abbot's Hill, Hemel Hempstead, a new school which has only started this term. I am enjoying it immensely, and revelling in the country after the smoke and grime of Manchester. It is so nice too to be within easy reach of St. Hugh's people again.—E. M. DUGGAN. I am afraid I have very little news to give. I am still teaching at St. Saviour's and St. Olave s Grammar School ; and still in love with the dear, noisy, stuffy Borough, which most of you know from the pages of "Across the Bridges." My work this year has consisted principally in coaching for Scholarships, which is interesting, but rather wearying.—Z. EPPSTEIN. I do not remember the date of my last postcard ; I hope this will not be a facsimile. I am Second Mistress now at the Grey Coat Hospital, Westminster, S.W., and I enjoy life much. We have staff teams in hockey, net ball, and tennis, so I get plenty of games, on which I am still very keen. At Christmas we moved into a dear little country cottage, lately covered with clematis and ramblers. Here I spend all week-ends.—F. M. FEAR. Since I last gave an account of my doings, I have spent a year in trying to educate the young of my own species. But this attempt was attended with such poor success that I have diverted my talents to the training of ducks and chickens, with the view of making them welcome additions to any gastronomic gathering. I look forward to the day when I can assure scoffers that poultryfarming pays.—R. W. GODDARD. This is my third term at St. Stephen's High School, where I am Form II. and History Mistress. I thoroughly enjoy my work, while for play there is the river, though it is not so nice here as at Oxford. Another advantage of being at Windsor is that one has a good many opportunities of seeing the King and other members of the Royal Family.—C. M. HARGRAVE.

31 I am teaching in a large private school at Eastbourne, called Clovelly Kepple. stone, as Senior English Mistress, and have Form IV. with twenty-six girls to look after ! Eastbourne is a delightful place—so much going on when school hours are over.—D. KENYON-STOW. Since I last wrote, two years ago, many things have happened. I became engaged and married within nine weeks ; then I went out to Burma with my husband, who is Commissioner. We travelled about his division in a luxurious house-boat, and I saw many most interesting things. I managed to get in a good deal ; and I think the Burmese are a delightful people. Many of my old friends would have smiled if they had seen me processing under a golden umbrella, or being fanned in a Buddhist temple by a dusky attendant. Unfortunately I contracted a curious Eastern complaint, and was obliged to come home at a day's notice. My little girl arrived in October, and is considered the most beautiful of her kind. She is fair, round, determined, and is already shaping for an instructor—if her scoldings are an index to her teaching powers.

I am now waiting for my husband's return on June 24th ; he returns then for good. Should any of my old friends wander this way, we shall be delighted to see them.—C. S. HOUGHTON. I am living a very quiet life at home with my mother, and occupying mysel with painting and various parish work. I am Secretary of a small Children's Convalescent Home, and see a great deal of the children, and took charge for three weeks lately while the Matron, was away. I had a small picture in the Academy last year, and another this year, but as it is in a corner it is easily passed over. Perha ps old St. Hugh's friends would look out for it in Gallery VIII. I had a very pleasant month abroad this spring with Winifred Mammatt.

We had about ten days in Siena, and then bicycled back to Genoa, stopping a few days at several small places on the way. One day we had a perfect ride over Pass of Bracca, from Spezia to Lestri Levanti, and had glorious views of the Apennines. It is a delightful way of seeing the country, and the Italians were very friendly and helpful on more than one occasion. They regarded us with great curiosity, as lady cyclists are very rare in North Italy.—H. M. HUDSON.

Violet Macpherson joined our staff three terms ago, and is already pluming herself on the fact that there is nothing left for her to learn about the workings of this establishment.

As a teacher, she shows a praiseworthy brightness in parrying the questions of over-intelligent pupils to which she does not know the answers. Her intimate knowledge of geography is only equalled by her knowledge of the dead languages. The grace of her movements and attitudes, the refinement of her English, coupled with her fondness for baths, early rising, and tea, make her an acceptable member of this staff.—(Signed) M. E. We still live at Wilton, and I should be so pleased to see any S.H.C. people who find themselves in this part of the world, and would care to look me up. 32 This term we are very keen on old English country dances and skipping, and I have thoroughly enjoyed myself, helping the girls to practice for a display which took place on June 15th. In August I am hoping to spend a week country dancing and theatre-going at the Stratford Shakespeare School. In the meantime I spend a good deal of my spare time at the County Cricket Ground and in looking for new rooms 1 On the whole, I have quite a cheery and a very busy time. Best wishes to all my friends.—B. G. SCOTT, I have now been teaching miscellaneous subjects at Ware Grammar School for five years. It is a life of pleasant monotony, broken only by mild educational experiments. In the summer I punt gently, and in the winter-time take moderate walks. This is all my news.—D. W. SPRULES. For the past year I have been working in the Toronto School of Medicine, and enjoying myseff very much. One misses the advantage of living in residence, but I have been trying to rise to the high standard of domestic ability which prevails among the Canadian girls. The winter was long and severe, but skating and tobogganing are hardly dear at the price. The summer is also most welcome, for then one can emerge from the perpetual goloshes !

And then there are the visits to country villages, and to the lakes—where one spends the day in a canoe and sleeps on an island. I fear that, even with the joy in prospect of learning to administer chloroform, I shall come back to Toronto with reluctance in October. The thing that troubles me most is that I cannot get back to Oxford, as I had so looked forward to doing ever since I made up my mind to "going down."—H. M. SMITH. For the last three years I have been very busy discovering of inexhaustible delights of London life. These seem to range from the supreme joy of a flat of one's own, to the surprise of meeting St. Hugh's friends in the most unexpected places. I have not yet got used to sitting down in a 'bus next to someone whom I saw last seven years ago, or to " lining-up " in a Suffrage procession with one of my own year. Another joy of London seems to be that of finding one's self doing the most unusual things in the most natural way, such as spending the night on a friend's drawing-room floor in order to "resist the Census," or crowded in a very stuffy gallery at the Old Bailey. In the summer holidays I went for a bicycling tour in Normandy, and had the most glorious time, visiting Rouen, Caen, Caudebec, Bayeux, &c., and finishing with a night at Mont St. Michael. Incidentally, I teach history at Graham Street High School, manage the games, and edit the magazine. Our Second Mistress has just been appointed Head of Worcester, which somehow seems to give us another link with St. Hugh's.—M. J. TEW. I am called the Science Mistress here, but as the staff is small I also teach several other subjects, including Scripture and Geography. The children, who mostly come from farms around, are not exactly brilliant, and it takes many weary classes before a scientific truth is firmly established in their minds. We have a system of weekly exams., which helps me immensely in knowing how far a subject has really been understood. From time to time these exams. bring back strangely-mutilated remains of past classes, e.g. : In a paper on Acts, I was informed that " at the first Council of Jerusalem Barnabas was Jupiter, and Paul Mercury, because7he was the chief speaker ; " also that " the Epicureans lived at Epicurea." it is very jolly to be so near Oxford ; I get over pretty often for a week-end.—E.
