REPORT FOR THE YEAR
1905-1906.
THE twentieth year of the existence of St. Hugh's Hall
has been quiet and uneventful, but marked by progress in many directions. We notice that the students who come in represent an increasingly large number of public schools ; and that a greater proportion of them take up the full B.A. course. Twelve of our students have now gained the B.A. course diploma given by the Association for the Education of Women. It is with great pleasure that we are able to say that for the fifth time consecutively the English Prize, open to all registered women students of the Association, has come to St. Hugh's, having been awarded this year to M. A. Keeling. Through the kindness of Miss Mordan, the Hall, to the greater comfort of the students, has now been fitted up with electric light ; and a valuable gift of ÂŁ60 has been received towards the building of a new boathouse. The old Students not only make a renewed offer of a scholarship of ÂŁ30 for three years, but constantly send contributions towards the fund for a new Chapel. The Class list this year has again been satisfactory to us : L. F. Todd gained one of the two first classes given to women in the English School, while P. de B. F. BowenColthurst was the only woman student to obtain a First in the Natural Science Schools. In addition to these, M. L. Lardelli (scholar) in History, and W. S. B. West in Geology, were placed in the Second Class.
4 The Hall Scholarship, which through the kindness of friends has been raised to £35 a year for three years, has been won by M. L. Gordon, of the Godolphin School, Salisbury. She has since come into residence, and is reading for Honour Moderations. Of the students who left St. Hugh's last June, the only one, M. L. Lardelli, who wished for a post in a public school, has been appointed Assistant Mistress at the Girls' Grammar School, Bradford. Other recent appointments are : — M. E. Wigg (Head Mistress, High School, Wigan), Head Mistress of Burlington Secondary School, London. L. Ash (Royal College of Science) Research Student at Bedford College. G. Cunynghame, Assistant Mistress, Girls' Grammar School, Berkhamsted. A. M. Wilson, Assistant Mistress, Church High School, Su rbiton. L. F. Todd has returned to St. Hugh's Hall, to take her year's training in Oxford. An arrangement has been made amongst the women's Colleges that the science books in their Libraries shall be accessible to all registered science students ; and in order to secure as large a variety of necessary books as possible, it has been proposed that each College shall provide science books in some special subject. Geology is the subject undertaken by St. Hugh's Hall, and by means of special gifts in addition to the regular sums allotted by the Library committee to the purchase of science books, the foundations for a good geological library have been laid.
