Heroes in the Making: The 20th STI NYC

The 20th STI National Youth Convention (NYC) is back on the road to train the STI students from all campuses nationwide to improve their competencies and give them insights on the latest trends in the industry. The three-month caravan kicked off at the City of Smiles, Bacolod City, with the theme, “Be the Hero. Be STI: Mission Possible.” Held on December 2, 2014 at STI’s first university, the STI-West Negros University (STI-WNU), thousands of students trooped to the venue, eager to experience a one-of-a-kind learning opportunity. The 20th STI NYC opened with two sets of speakers holding talks to students from different programs that discussed topics relevant to their respective fields. For the first part of the NYC, Digital Marketing Consultant for Hotel and Restaurant industry discussed the current direction of the Hotel and Restaurant Management industry with Be ‘Proactive!’: Up-to-date Trends in the Service Industry. Consultant from John Robert Powers, Marisyll Pengson, meanwhile, imparted sound advice to the students on how they can project a more professional impression with her talk Pro-Ficiency: Showcasing Professional Efficiency Through Your Image. And Juan Carlos “JC” Libirian, CEO of CnB Ventures, shared his

secrets on making a living with creativity in Cash in Your Creativity: Turning Your Ideas into Success. The second part of the event, on the other hand, talked about creating and developing applications. STI College – Bacoor faculty member Ferdinand “Ricky” Bunag emphasized on the importance of developing mobile applications in this age of smartphones in Going Mobile!: The Power of Mobile Application Development, while Orange Apps Inc. CEO Gian Javelona guided the students through the basics of developing mobile apps with ’Apptitudes’: Fundamentals of Mobile Application Development. To help young aspiring mobile application developers jumpstart their career in the mobile industry, co-founder of Mochibits and Mobile App Developer Howard Go conducted his talk ’Apps-Start’ Your Success in the Mobile App Market. After Bacolod, the STI NYC went to SM City Iloilo on December 4, 2014 and will also make its next stopovers at Hotel St. Ellis in Legazpi on January 8, 2015, Baguio Convention Center on January 13, Greenleaf Hotel in General Santos on January 20, AndaRizal Convention Center in Davao on January 22, Aliw Theater in Metro Manila on February 3-6, SM City Cagayan de Oro on February 17, and finally at CAP Cebu on March 10.

Upgrading and steadily growing. That is STI’s current status as it successfully continues to expand its network of schools and aim for excellence in the education it brings to its students. Two more campuses add to the current roster of six STI Academic Centers that were recently completed.

Sitting on a 4,347-square-meter property, the four-storey STI Academic Center Lucena is set and ready to accommodate more than 4,000 senior high school and college students for the School Year 2015-2016. It is also proudly one of the pioneer institutions in Lucena City to be given permit by the Department of Education (DepEd) to offer the Senior High School (SHS) program as early as 2014. An Academic Center will soon rise in Bohol, instigated by the groundbreaking ceremony on October 22, 2014. The 2,184-square-meter property will house the three-storey structure and is expected to be fully operational by June 2015 for 800 college students residing in the province.

Getting Ahead with SITEL One of the world’s largest and most diversified providers of customer care and outsourcing services, SITEL, sealed a partnership with STI Education Services Group, Inc. (STI) during a signing event on October 10, 2014 at the STI Academic Center Ortigas-Cainta. Expounded in the agreement is the practical education the STI students will receive from STI and SITEL’s collaboration. Aside from the training sessions SITEL will conduct for the STI students, vital contents from SITEL will be integrated into STI’s courseware and curriculum, which STIers

can put to good practice at the same company as they are also entitled with a choice to undergo their internship at SITEL. To give their learning a further boost, faculty members will also receive proper training from SITEL which will further help them substantiate the lectures they give to their students. SITEL will also be participating in STI’s job fairs and will be active in posting job opportunities for graduating STI students. With the training they will receive, STIers are also privileged to have a better edge in their application should they decide to join SITEL.

“The partnership provides intensive preparations with mock interviews using SITEL’s Language Assessment tool in which our students’ communication skills will be gauged, Employment Seminar to gear them towards better prospects for job application, and Language training for our English faculty members for our Communication Arts subjects. Our graduating students from all programs will benefit from these learning activities, which is also why we are working with SITEL to give our students a head start with our Manila campuses and then expanding to the rest of our schools nationwide,” says STI’s Vice President for Academics Dr. Lloyd C. Bautista.

Citibank Mentors in Moneyversity Citi Philippines has collaborated with STI in educating graduating students on good money habits and encouraging them to take charge of their financial future. This was made possible following a partnership that was sealed on September 8, 2014 at the Citibank Square in Libis, Quezon City. Dubbed as the Moneyversity, the program’s pilot was rolled out in STI campuses, with three successful sessions held at STI College – Ortigas-Cainta, STI College – Global City, and STI College – Caloocan. Moneyversity features the award-winning inspirational speaker and lecturer Francis Kong, who focused on three principles in his talk that will help students win in life: be a life-long learner; that attitude is more important than skills; and to be in control. In between these principles are some tips on how to properly spend and save money. Highlighting the value of the learnings students will gain from Moneyversity, 6

Reclaiming Victory BS Computer Science students Jaycee Dela Cruz (4th year) and Erzel Capeding (2nd year) of STI College – Caloocan have proven their brilliance in the world of programming by placing 1st runnerup during the Inter-University Java Programming Competition. Held on February 27, 2014, this annual event was sponsored by the Technological University of the Philippines (TUP) Manila in cooperation with the Mathematics Department of the College of Science where 15 colleges and universities gathered to participate in the competition. One Big Step at a Time “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value,” proved itself to be a good motto to prepare three STIers of STI College – Sta. Cruz to win 2nd runner-up during the PAUTAKAN, a regional intercollegiate quiz bee held at De La Salle Lipa in Batangas on February 12, 2014. Junior BS Computer Engineering (BSCoE) students Harvey Monserrat, John Nelo Acunin, and Xuxa Dennies Abad started their mission to showcase their intellect when they won as 1st runner-up of the Think Quest during the cluster level of STI’s Tagisan ng Talino event last December 6. After which, they joined the PAUTAKAN Competition where they matched against the best from 19 colleges and universities in Region IV-A. With the careful coaching of Mr. Richard John Manzaon and Ms. Maria Teresa Babaan, the computer wizards strategized by working together in analysing and computing before answering the questions. Two for All and All for One! BS Information Technology (BSIT) students from STI College – Global City made their school proud during the 4th InterSchool IT Olympics 2014 on March 1, 2014 as they took home three awards. It was a rewarding experience for the winning STIers under the dutiful guidance of their respective coaches, Mr. Carlito de Asis for PC Assembly/ Disassembly, Mr. Joselito Oyao for Networking, Mr. Sherwin Ostria for Digital Electronics, and Mr. Richard Basilio for Java Programming and IT Quiz Bee. The 4th Inter-School IT Olympics 2014 was a major inter-school competition for the academic world of IT where 32 colleges and universities participated to prove their

computer skills in different categories held at the University of Makati. Senior student Mary Joy Placido, freshman Ivy Salamanca, and sophomore Jon Maximo proved themselves as the most knowledgeable and reigned as champions in the IT Quiz Bee, while freshman Ronald Louie Sadiz and senior Kevin Dexter Nipay placed 1st runner-up in the Java Programming category. At the end of the competition, STI College – Global City was proclaimed 1st runner-up for the event’s overall ranking, giving pride to the esteemed academic institution.

Pride with Two Cups of Victory How many ways can you love Vigan’s longganisa? Six Hospitality and Restaurant Services (HRS) students from STI College – Vigan emerged victorious as they demonstrated the different ways to enjoy the beloved dish that Vigan is known for, bringing home the first and third places during the Vigan Longganisa Cookfest Showdown. Dubbed as “the most delicious festival,” the event was held on January 22, 2014 where schools, restaurants, and hotels in the province participated to witness the making and the presentation of different dishes made out of the key ingredient, the beloved Vigan longganisa. STI College – Vigan sent two teams to challenge other aspiring chefs from different colleges and universities, and concluded as victors, reliving their school’s victory last 2013. HRS students Jonathan Paet, Suzette Ann Amoroso, and Rachel Uclaray reigned as champions, while the second team, Rey Francis Pacubas, Melody Diane Guerrero, and Marietta Tugas placed second runner-up. Passion in All Trades STI College – Pagadian is proud to have Jenevie Nagal, a woman of many talents, as proven by her numerous accreditations. An instructor for the Hospitality and Restaurant Services (HRS) program, her overwhelming list of qualifications includes having accreditations in Commercial Cooking NC II, Housekeeping NC II, Food and Beverages NC II, Front Office Services NC II, Bartending NC II, and Events Planning Services NC II. As if those are not enough, she went beyond her limits and recently earned three more accreditations in Tour Guiding Services NC II, Travel Services NC II, and Tourism Promotions Services NC II. Jenevie is part of the school’s strong roster of faculty members, making another solid impression on the school’s goal in giving quality education to its students. Boy Wonder from Down Under Jayar Estrella’s beginnings was that of a humble dreamer. Coming from a family with six children (him being the third one), he dreamed of having a successful life and starting his own family. Even though it is all he wants, he still opens himself to bigger possibilities that might come his way. “Aspiration is limitless. Anything can happen,” as he says. Although Jayar is able to pursue his passion and have fun, college life was not all smooth-sailing. Besides the occasional times when he would simply run out of cash, Jayar, like any other student, struggled to achieve higher grades. He admitted to being “embarrassed” about his grades because he has always wanted to make his parents proud, especially his father who was then working in Australia. Although he was skilled enough to join cooking competitions in his school, he had a hard time attaining the required

grade so he could march on his graduation day. Nevertheless, in 2010, he graduated in Hospitality and Restaurant Services (HRS) program without any problems, and left the country soon after to join his father and family in Australia. His first step was to find a job, which he did at McDonald’s in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, Australia. The 25-year-old achiever started as a crew member until his hardworking attitude earned him his due promotion and finally became the manager of the McDonald’s branch he is working at. “My family did not let me down during my difficult times,” shares Jayar. “That’s why they serve as my inspiration. Impressive Keepers 86 BS Business Management (BSBM) juniors and seniors aced the Bookkeeping National Certificate (NC) II assessment on March 5-14,2014, proudly giving STI College – Balayan a 100% competency rating, proving their excellence in the field. Placing their trust in the students, the faculty members and school administration took the initiative to help them earn a certification in a specific trade area related to their program by making them take the said competency assessment. They also knew that this will take the young entrepreneurs further in their career, as the certification will give them a better edge in the industry. Spills No More STI College – Recto bagged the most coveted award in the annual Engbensyon 2014 after winning the National Championship with its revolutionary invention of the “MCU Based Oil Spill Clean-up Surface Vessel.” Fueled by oil spill mishaps and its toll in and around inland waters, the prototype is a mitigating vessel which can tackle oil spills from collecting oil out of the surface water to its storage containers equipped with liquid level sensors. The machine enabled users to maneuver the system using an Android application. Composed of 5th year BS Computer Engineering (BSCoE) students Ernie Buaya, Jr., Gilbert Laxamana, and Kharen Niñofranco with Engr. Elizier Obamos as their Thesis Adviser, Team STI confidently faced the panel of judges in a two-day exhibition and demonstration.

The MCU Based Oil Spill Clean-up Surface Vessel is also the team’s thesis project as their final requirement in college. STI College – Recto previously won an award in Engbensyon 2010 after placing 2nd in the Best Design category and Voter’s Choice award for its entry, PC Based Cocktail Mixer. A Huge Take-Off By: Jun Castromero, Faculty Member, STI College – Balagtas

The lives of Ian Carlo Galang, Paulo Arceo, and Jemuel Justiniano will never be the same again after their adventurous internship at DBA Poppy’s Time Out Sports Bar in Lousiana, USA! The aspiring juniors were qualified for this year’s International Internship Program of STI College – Balagtas. With the help and initiative of the school’s Alumni Placement Office headed by Louie Christopher Quinay, and with the supervision of the School Administrator Ms.

Millie Kaw, the three interns boarded the Delta Airways flight on March 13, 2014 to have the grand opportunity to experience real life global training. They learned tips and tricks of the hotel and restaurant industry at DBA Poppy’s Time Out Sports Bar and even had their share of challenges. Despite the difficulties, they worked hard until their OJT program ended on July 15, 2014. Poppy’s Time Out Sports Bar is famous for its DIRECTV packages, featuring live coverage of sports events that their customers enjoy. During the students’ four-month stay, they accommodated diners, served dishes and beverages, and worked in the kitchen.

“The skills of our students are undeniably outstanding and this is evident through their qualifications that made them almost always able to get their internship in different places,” Ms. Millie shared. “As part of equipping them with real life education, we encourage them to go out of their comfort zone and try new things, which most of them are courageous enough to do so. I have always believed that with persistence, hard work, and dedication, they can achieve their goals and dreams in life, and I am proud that they are starting as early as now.”

Conquering the Seas A group of students under the Tourism and Hospitality Management program of STI College – Tanauan let their dreams set sail through an on-the-job training program at 2GO, one of the country’s largest and premier land and sea travel providers. Aboard St. Pope John Paul II, the 23 graduating students taking up 2-yr. Hospitality and Restaurant Services (HRS), along with five 2nd year Hotel and Restaurant Management (BSHRM) students, went through a series of hands-on trainings and familiarization seminars on ship operations and management under the shipboard training officials.

The shipboard training is an eight-day program that started on April 9, 2014 en route ManilaCebu-Cagayan-Cebu-Manila with a total of 200 credited hours. “When I heard about the shipboard training program, I never missed a chance to prepare and work hard for the assessment, and I’m glad that I made it,” shares Dina Tabuclao, 2nd year BSHRM student. “We have all learned so much from this experience and it gave us the opportunities to grow as future professionals in the industry,” she adds. Overpowering Limits Julius Carl Calalang did not have the easiest beginnings as a student. Before their high school graduation, his classmates were busy planning the courses they would like to take and which colleges they wanted to go. Julius, on the other hand, was not yet sure if he will be able to attend college due to financial difficulties. However, his dreams of pursuing a college education slowly turned into reality when he attained the highest score for a mandatory scholarship exam which gave him the chance to go to college for free. He enrolled at a college that was endorsed to him by the scholarship exam sponsors, but he did not find there the kind of growth he knew he needed to become successful. He stopped school and took on odd jobs to help his family financially. He found his second calling when a relative from abroad offered to fund his schooling, an opportunity he immediately grabbed. He was recommended to take a computerrelated course,

advising him that he would find better prospects in that field. Despite his hopes to pursue a course in civil engineering, he complied with his relative’s wishes and enrolled in the 2-year Associate in Computer Technology Program at STI College – Tarlac. His ACT programming classes captured his interest in the field and gave him a change of heart. He realized that it was the right course for him. “STI did not just educate me, they believed in me. I was not just taught, I was trained. So when the time came for me to conquer the real world, I was prepared,” shared Julius. Soon after his graduation in 2004, he was hired by TARELCO, an electric distribution utility in Tarlac, and worked as a Data Controller. He was promoted to System Analyst/Programmer a year after and soon stepped up to become the company’s present System Administrator. Taking from his challenging experiences of life and hard work, he admits that everyone is on the same level in the real world where one’s willpower will be put to test. Taking inspiration from a quote which says, “Find Your Limits. Exceed Them. Three Steps Forward STI Valencia strives to nurture its students to be well-rounded individuals by ensuring that they have the best facilities the school can offer, a standardized courseware developed by industry practitioners, and highly-qualified faculty members. Thus, it was with great excitement when three of the school’s faculty members got notable recognitions from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to be accredited Competency Assessors in various areas. Jorge Martin Laya and Irene Coronado are now certified Assessors in Cookery NC IV while Jay Ian Lim is a full-pledge Assessor in Front Office NC II, Bartending NC II, and Food and Beverage Services NC II. Taking the opportunity to witness a once in a lifetime event, the STI community banded together to celebrate Pope Francis’ five-day visit to the Philippines by bringing the events of the Papal Visit closer to the people through ABS-CBN’s citizen journalism group and by joining Manila City’s Clean-up Drive on January 18, 2015 after the Grand Papal Mass at the Quirino Grandstand. Since day one, STI took part in monitoring the news and social media reports thru 40 students and faculty members as volunteers from STI College – Quezon Avenue working with ABS-CBN’s citizen journalism sector, Bayan Mo, iPatrol Mo! (BMPM). They helped ABS-CBN’s coverage of the event by gathering updates from various netizens or Bayan Patrollers throughout the country, and disseminate them through abs-cbnnews.com, BMPM’s website, and ABS-CBN’s Social Media Desk to keep the Filipinos up to date as the activities transpired. All throughout the world leader’s stay in the country, he has been spreading the message of Mercy and Compassion, particularly advocating to fight corruption, empathize with the poor, strengthen family ties, and have faith in times of adversity to the huge crowd of people before him in every activity. With a record breaking 7 million people from all walks of life who attended on January 18, 2015 alone, there is no doubt that Pope Francis speaks to the heart of every Filipino, regardless of faith. Enduring the damp weather and cold winds, STIers cleaned up the streets armed with their gloves, trash bags, and smiles on their faces. Having a huge interest and a knack for computers, Josephine (or “Phine”) Ramos took up Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) at STI College – EDSA-Crossing (now STI College – Shaw). During her college days, Phine participated in various activities to hone her talents and strengthen her other abilities aside from her computer programming skills. She earned her first award in “Best in Speech” for her impressive display of eloquence, helped set up booths on the history of computer in exhibits during the IT week held at her school, and participated with the presentations of short skits. As if those were not enough, she even joined the cheerleading group during her freshman year.

With her hands full, it did not help that her classes became more challenging. She soon realized the value of time management and setting her priorities right, which drove her to become more focused with her studies. But despite the struggle she was going through with her hectic schedule, Phine drew her inspiration from her then college boyfriend, who ultimately became her husband. The stretching time she experienced at school helped in molding her to become the efficient manager that she is today. Phine graduated in 2003 and landed her first job as a Software Engineer at Accenture. The knowledge and skills she learned from school, paired with her enthusiasm for her work and her experience in Accenture, helped her grow professionally. From her time at Accenture, she progressed to her role as a Delivery Manager in Sun Life Financial today. Phine is handling the group and channel line of business, while providing technical support for the company’s applications such as enhancements, additional functionalities, and user inquiries. With all the technicalities of her work, she remains thankful for the training in computer programming that she received at STI more than anything. Nevertheless, she knows that adaptability and excellent communication skills are just as significant in the professional world. Both are skills that she believes to be the advantage of STI students, like herself, over others.

“It is important to grow not just in your technical skills when you get into the professional life,” she shares, “because at the end of the day, the industry will not only look at your key knowledge in your field, but also your know-how in other areas.” Furthermore, she stressed the importance of having communication skills in her current workplace. “One of the unforgettable lessons I learned is having good communication skills that helped me interact with people. This is especially true when I pursued the management path instead of IT because it helped me greatly.” While she continues to learn as much as she can in the ever advancing IT world, she is also eager to learn the ropes of the financial industry and ensure growth in her current line of work. She has much to experience in her present company, but the preparation STI gave her helped Phine advance faster in her career. She had managed people and took on huge roles and responsibilities, a skill that she developed in college. Beyond all that, she believes the importance of passion in achieving one’s goals.

“You really need to have the passion in the field you want to pursue because having the passion is the first step to ensure that you will get to the goal you want to achieve,” says Phine.

Stay Healthy Keep a healthy lifestyle by remembering “SERVE:” get enough sleep, eat the right food, reduce stress and relax, take your daily vitamins, and exercise regularly. The goal here is to stay fit and energetic so you don’t only feel good, but also look good! SERVE-ing your body well as early as now will also greatly matter in the future: the healthier you are, the stronger you’ll grow to be.

Live beneath your means It’s not all about saving money, but making your money work harder for you. You can achieve more with your resources by handling them wisely, and that is a matter of knowing the difference between the “must-haves” and the “niceto-haves.” The “nice” things may fulfill your wants, but the “musts” answer to what you actually need, which is always more important. With the theme “Be the Hero, Be STI: The Hero Challenge,” the brave and the bold will face each other in the arena to engage in the most challenging and exciting competitions. While the TNT calls for the most knowledgeable and most seasoned students, the TNS sets the floor for the most talented in the creative arts. The TNT will be held in three levels: the Cluster, the Regional, and the National competition where the finalists will ultimately contend for first place. The TNS on the other hand will directly sum up in the National finals. Eight competitions fall under TNT for students with different fortes. The most sumptuous dishes will be tried and tasted for the top place in the cooking competition Chef Xpress. Besides the routinely used punctuation marks like the period (.), the question mark (?), the exclamation point (!), and the comma (,), the other ones you often overlook can actually make your sentences clearer and more intelligible (and are not just good for typing smileys). Knowing the proper way of using them is a very valuable advantage when expressing and explaining your ideas through writing. Here are some of the punctuation marks you might want to use on your next essay:

Example: Please bring pizza on Thursday (Margaret’s birthday) and make it big enough for ten people. • Implying an afterthought or adding a commentary following a sentence.

• Joining two or more words that come before a noun to modify and act as a single idea in order to better illustrate a sentence. It is used differently from a dash (see below) given that it is shorter and no spaces are left between a hyphen and a word.

STI’s young connoisseurs took home three medals and two diplomas from the prestigious National Food Showdown for setting the warmest and most appetizing dining mood, and for creating the most scrumptious dishes that were not only pleasing to the taste buds, but are equally satisfying to the eyes. STI celebrated its Big 31st Anniversary in a grand festivity that was witnessed by more than 20,000 students from various STI campuses in key cities nationwide. Held at the Enchanted Kingdom in Santa Rosa, Laguna on September 26, 2014, STI commemorated the event with the theme, Be the Hero. Be STI.

The theme aims to challenge the whole STI community — from the faculty members, employees, students, and alumni — to become the hero that they can be by encouraging them to thrive to reach their dreams, honor their work, and to become responsible members of society. The day was filled with much excitement as major competitions were likewise held at the Enchanted Kingdom’s Enchanting Events Place. Students nationwide showed off their exceptional talents and skills in the Battle of the Bands, Singing Idol, Hataw Sayaw, and the Search for Mr. and Ms. STI 2014. The contestants of these events were champions of their respective school’s local competitions, which then elevated to cluster level and finally reached the national finals, the grounds for the best of the best nationwide.

Tickets to NEXT-IX Boot Camp Opportunities arise anywhere at any time. This proved true for two students of STI College – Cebu: Kristin Hersh Surbilla, a 3rd year BS Information Technology (BSIT) student, and BSIT senior (now an alumnus) Clint Ariola. Both of whom were selected for the NEXT-IX Boot Camp held on April 14, 2014 at the NEXT-IX Office in Cebu City. Kristin and Clint were attending their school’s job fair last March 14 when they sent their applications for the boot camp and underwent the first screening. They qualified for the second screening, which was also the final step in joining the event. Being selected gave them more advanced knowledge in Java and Android applications, and a chance to enhance their skills, knowledge, and work ethics that prepared them for the work field.

This also opened better employment opportunities for Kristin with NEXT-IX, especially with the intensive training that she was provided with. Zealous athletes of STI College – Lucena bagged numerous awards during the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) sports event held on December 5 to 7, 2013 for the cluster competition and on February 8 to 9, 2014 for the regional competition. 19-year-old sophomore BS Information Technology (BSIT) student John Dave Tena

emerged victorious in the cluster event of the Swimming Competition on December 7, 2013 as he collected the optimum gold medal for 200m Individual Medley and a couple more of bronze medals for 200m and 100m butterfly strokes, and another for 100m freestyle. His dexterity under waters was further proved during the regional competition held at De La Salle University in Dasmariñas, Cavite where his team of talented students from different schools bagged the silver medal in the 4x5m Relay Freestyle and the bronze medal in the 4x100m Relay Freestyle. The competition was tight and thrilling even for John Dave, who was too overwhelmed to even notice how the event went and finished. According to him, the honor he would

bring to his family and his school was all he was after, and he achieved just that with his strength, discipline, and faith. STI College – Lucena swept three more titles during the cluster events. 2-year Information Technology (IT) sophomores Raymart Pajar and Rolly Sombiro collected the bronze medals in the Single Table Tennis men divisions A and B respectively, while BS Business Management (BSBM) senior Claudine Español stepped out in the Miss PRISAA pageant as 3rd runner-up among the layering beautiful faces of the event. Power of Two A duo from STI College – Zamboanga brought home the bacon in the recently concluded regional convention for future key players in the field of Information Technology, the Philippine Society of Information Technology (PSIT), held on March 4, 2014 at Dipolog Medical Center. Composed of 4th year Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) JM Leor Fernandez and 3rd year Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) Mershalene Hamid under the guidance of their coach and adviser, Whesley Timpangco,

they placed 1st runner-up after taking on the computer programming challenge confidently. “Apart from the concepts and theories that we encounter from our day-to-day classroom discussions, our hands-on experience played an important role in the course of the competition to help us solve the programming problems skilfully,” says JM Leor Fernandez. Master Travellers Three BS Travel Management (BSTRM) students of STI College – Kalibo defended their title as champions of the Aklan Provincial Tourism Week Quiz Bee on September 16, 2014 at the Corazon Cabagnot Training and Tourism Center in Old Buswang, Kalibo, Aklan. The annual event is part of the Aklan Provincial Tourism Week and was open to all students who were taking tourismrelated courses in Aklan.

Under the fine coaching of Ms. Melrose Lunn, BSTRM sophomores Esrah Guiterrez, John Patrick Vista, and Arnelyn Tandez triumphed over the tough competition where they answered challenging questions on all tourism sights, destination,

transportation data, and statistics, among others. STIers of STI College – Tuguegarao proved themselves to be real stewards of nature as they continuously supported the reforestation program of the Metropolitan Tuguegarao Water District (MTWD) in Peñablanca. By manning the said program, STI College – Tuguegarao consistently advances the cause through seedling production and tree planting activities in the area annually. Initiated by the NSTP class under the guidance of its instructor, Catherine Pagulayan, SBO officers, faculty members, and more student volunteers joined the cause with solid resolve to restore the trees of Peñablanca. Easy 3-Step Recipes Summer Edition

You don’t need to do much complicated cooking to go gourmet this summer. Delicious and refreshing food and drinks are not that hard to do. In fact, you can do them yourself in three easy steps! Just add a cup of absolute love for food and you are now your own favorite chef. After all, what’s a vacation without the yummy munchies?

Ingredients: Zest of 2 limes Clear soda Lime Juice

1 cup sugar 1 cup water 1 cup chopped mint leaves

Lime-Mint Cooler

Instructions: 1. In a saucepan, combine sugar and water. Cook over medium heat. As it starts to boil, stir in mint leaves and lime zest. 2. Strain the syrup and store in a lidded container and refrigerate.

You can store in freezer for longer storage. 3. When serving, mix ¼ cup syrup with ¾ cup club soda, and a juice of one lime. Stir and serve over ice.

Homemade Chocolate Ice Cream

Ingredients: 2 cups heavy cream 1 14-ounce canned condensed milk 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions: 1. In a large bowl, whisk together condensed milk, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract until thick. Set aside. 2. Using an electric mixer, beat heavy cream on high speed until cream forms stiff peaks.

onto wooden skewers. Grill for 7-8 minutes on each side, occasionally brushing with marinade if needed. 3. When the chicken turns golden brown, remove kebab from heat. Boil the remaining marinade and serve for kebab sauce.

But each tool has its own pros and cons so play around before you commit to whichever one you’re most happy with. • Blogger is the most popular among personal-style bloggers because it’s easy to work with and there are many layouts that can be personalized to suit anyone’s style at the click of a mouse. • Tumblr has thousands of themes to choose from! Its laidback design makes for easy posting and because of its re-blogging feature, it makes networking unbelievably easy. • Wordpress is a platform for more experienced bloggers.
