Editor’s Note STI has always been an advocate of nation-building. And through the years, we have encouraged our entire community to be catalysts of positive change in our country. This year, we take it a bit further and celebrate STI’s 30 Years of Excellence with the theme Be STI. This is a culture-building advocacy that challenges everyone to be the best that they can be by embodying the ideals and attributes of an STIer. This long-term crusade was witnessed during the grand anniversary celebration held at the Enchanted Kingdom in Sta. Rosa, Laguna that was attended by more than 22,000 STIers from key cities in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao! In this issue, we also look back to Halalan 2013: Tayo Na! as thousands of STI volunteers nationwide underwent workshops on citizen journalism and became Bayan Patrollers in ABS-CBN’s coverage of the May 13, 2013 national elections. This is STI’s sixth Halalan partnership with ABS-CBN. We likewise salute the students, faculty members, and alumni who created buzz with their outstanding achievements and brought pride to the STI community. Read their stories and be inspired! Who says a simple provincial lass can’t make it big in the city? Not Jonha Revesencio! Check out her story as she shares her exciting experience in social media and how she transformed to a social media butterfly who has gained numerous recognitions from the digital world. For this year’s Halalan, STI volunteers have been deployed to be the key content aggregators under Bayan Mo, iPatrol Mo (BMPM), the advocacy arm of ABS-CBN. All five STI Mobile Schools, which are equipped with state-of-theart computer laboratories comprised of more than 20 multimedia computers with internet access, LCD monitors, sound system, and other top-of-theline equipment housed inside a bus, have been also deployed in Luzon and Mindanao to help in aggregating stories from Bayan Patrollers nationwide. As content aggregators, STI volunteers are asked to receive and verify reports from the Bayan Patrollers through the face-to-face interviews and various media platforms such as email, SMS, and social media like Facebook, Twitter, and others. Beginning November 2012, STIers nationwide underwent workshops on citizen journalism in their campuses and during the 18th STI National Youth Convention, led by ABS-CBN journalists like Jing Castañeda, Atom Araullo, Niña Corpuz, Jeff Canoy, Tony Velasquez, Chiara Zambrano, BMPM head Inday Varona, and other local news celebrities in the regions. Select students from STI College – Global City and STI College – Quezon Avenue also joined the BMPM Caravan held on May 6, 2013 which served as the kick-off event for BMPM’s Halalan coverage. The powerhouse partnership of STI and broadcasting giant ABS-CBN has spanned through Halalan 1998, 2001, 2004, 2007, and 2010.

Taekwondo Jins Shine Taekwondo has become one of the popular sports in the country today mainly due to the numerous accolades that our country has received from international competitions. Now, there are even local taekwondo competitions held throughout the country. In North Luzon, the Pangasinan Taekwondo Championship was held on January 26, 2013 at San Fabian Sports Civic Center Gym. It was widely attended by martial artists from 13 taekwondo clubs and various schools in the province. Jollibee Skills Enhancement and Educational Development for Students (SEEDS) program trainee Emmanuel Espin; and Michael Salinga, who worked as service crew of Chowking during their college days; are now BS Business Administration Major in Operations Management graduates and valuably employed in their chosen fields.
From cashiering and taking customers’ orders, and being part of the marketing staff, at the same time doing school work, Michael is now the restaurant manager of Chowking – Tanza branch. “Being a restaurant manager is a hard job. It requires a lot of patience, hard work, and determination to be able to achieve your goals,” relates Michael. “Every day I am able to exercise these traits since I am managing several people and supervising several activities so I find myself under a lot of pressure. Thanks to my being a working student in college, I am able to handle all these situations and address them without losing focus.”
“Being a SEEDS trainee is not an easy task,” shares Emmanuel, also known as Emman. “You should know how to balance your time, but at the same time, it has also helped to boost my self-confidence and taught me how to deal with different kinds of people.” From being a service crew in Jollibee, the newly graduated Emman now manages human resource and assists in store operations as Management Trainee of Jollibee – SM City Rosario branch. Looking forward, Emman sees himself having his own family and business.
Truly, dreaming is never enough. Taking action and making your dreams come true will be the best gift you will be able to reap. Michael says it well in his advice to other working students out there who are about to give up, “Just focus on doing things well, one step at a time, and you will earn your rewards.”

Meet Jonha: The RebelWizard Storyteller, start-up fan, and student of life are words that STI College – Kalibo alumna Jonha Revesencio uses to describe herself. And while others are stressing out just to meet their deadlines in work, Jonha spends her work time enjoying what she loves to do — connecting people!
Wizard in Training onha already felt what it was like to make both ends meet at an early age. When her father passed away, Jonha was compelled to work her way through college juggling time to attend school and meet deadlines at work. However with the supportive environment she had in STI, Jonha was able to get by. “It’s good to have teachers who were both supportive and understanding,” shared Jonha.

Right after graduating from the Diploma in Computer Programming program in 2007, Jonha landed a job with a BPO company in Iloilo where she worked for over four years. Since Jonha was tasked to do all sorts of marketing from telemarketing, email promotions, and eventually to digital marketing, she also decided to pursue a four-year program on Marketing Management. On the job, Jonha explained that she honed her skills in community management and strategic planning. Because of her expanding expertise, Jonha even handled community management for IKEA in Singapore and Malaysia. IKEA is a worldwide home furniture and appliances company. “More than anything else, STI has truly helped me to dream and believe that I can make it happen. It’s where I dreamed and started believing in myself,” shared Jonha.

As part of the company, Jonha does combinations of social media strategies, community management, and customer service for the large network of RebelMouse’s clients. “No two days are the same with RebelMouse. Every day, we brainstorm on how we can make it easy for everyone to build their own web presence with just a few clicks,” shared Jonha when asked to narrate her typical day at work as a RebelWizard, RebelMouse’s position title for a Social Media Strategist. Apart from her fun job, Jonha had also stood as resource speaker for The 3rd Iloilo Provincial Tourism Summit 2012 and Social Media Influencers Summit 2013. To add punch to her already impressive career, Jonha also received multiple recognitions including The Top 100 Community Managers to Follow, Yahoo! A “Social” Advice “Don’t look at me as a role model. Look at your family and the people who believe in you,” stated Jonha as she recounted her days of being a student to being a manager of “social connections.” As a final piece of advice, Jonha relayed the importance of self-trust and confidence in one’s self. “Surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and thinkers, but most of all, surround yourself with those who see greatness within you, even when you don’t see it yourself.”

COVER STORY
:
The Movement for Excellence
We understood and valued the importance of a better Philippines through “Simulan Natin” in 2009 and we affected positive change throughout the nation with “Citizen STI” in 2010. A greater challenge was posted as we also shifted gears with the theme “The Change I Want to See Begins with Me” last 2011 which called us to not just enact social responsibilities but more importantly, make them part of who we are by initiating change within ourselves. This time, we are not letting the movement fade and end. As we mark our 30th year anniversary, we are upping the ante as we are enjoined to be the best that we can be. For our 30th Anniversary, we see the birth of a culture-building advocacy. The beginnings of Be STI.

“Every day, I thrive to become an effective communicator by only saying things I mean and by keeping quiet on the things that could hurt other people’s feelings.” Huxley Cabrera, STI College – Tarlac
“I actively participate in the classroom and I’m not afraid to ask questions or voice my opinions even when it’s unpopular.” Mark Anthony Herrera, STI College – Fairview
What is BE STI? BE STI is our aspiration for you to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will equip you for life in this complex and rapidly changing world. These are the qualities, skills, and understandings you should develop during your lifetime. These attributes go beyond the disciplinary expertise or technical knowledge. These are traits that also prepare graduates as agents of social good in the future.
“I ask people what they honestly think about me or my work. I can take criticisms. I believe that is how we can learn and grow.” Alynna De Guzman, STI College – San Fernando
Who is an STIer? The true essence of being an STIer is not defined by just being a student of STI. Instead, this dares us for a bigger challenge. We are all heeded to become models for excellence through ideals that will bring out the best in us. This seems too much of a task for you but an everyday practice will make it so simple and easy. To start the ball rolling, we asked your fellow STIers on what they do to imbibe the ideals of being an STIer.
“When I make decisions, I always weigh the choices based on what would be better for the group instead of what would be better for myself. I find that this makes a group easier to work with and happier.” Mark Zyddhel Gindoy, STI College – Ormoc
“I take pictures all the time, anytime, anywhere — I’m a shutterbug! I do this so that my photography skills won’t get rusty.” Zachary Penera, STI College – Baguio
“I keep the small clutters to myself so that I wouldn’t litter my surroundings.” Carla Saclausa, STI College – Bacoor
“I take the initiative to learn something new every day by reading articles on the internet. The world is full of incredible facts that we haven’t even began to discover!” Kiezel Mellado, STI College – General Santos
Be STI asks for you to be more, to be fearless, and to be the best version of yourself that you can be. Like them, you too can make these ideals become a habit by integrating them in your day-to-day activities. Be STI with pride and keep your head held high… for you are STI!

Kristel Clear Success When the late Mr. Oscar Ceballo lost his job, the Ceballo family almost had no hope of seeing a better life for them. When everything else seemed to fall out of place, STI College – Parañaque alumna Maria Kristel Ceballo stood strong not only for herself but also for the rest of her family. Kristel knew her whole family will find it hard to send her to college and at the same time support the continuing studies of her siblings. However, the choice between to stop schooling or to continue was very clear to her — she would pursue her college degree no matter the odds. Kristel, or “Kring” as she would like to be called, applied as a service crew in Jollibee and was fortunately hired. Through the “Aral-Kabuhayan Scholarship Program” Kring enrolled in STI College – Parañaque to earn her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree while working part-time to earn money. It was an uphill climb for this young lass before she decided to apply for the position of Management Trainee. After passing a battery of tests, Kristel was upped as Assistant Restaurant Manager. After serving seven years at Jollibee, Kring now works for Orange Julius Canada. Orange Julius is a global chain of stores that has been in the smoothie and beverage business since the 1920s. Kristel shared that working abroad has broaden her knowledge, skills, and experience on managing a variety of business and to further her understanding of the customers’ different needs. Passionate as she is, Kristel lost no hope even through the dark days of her life — like an unbreakable crystal in the midst of a blazing fire. *Special thanks to Geraldine Legaspi, School Correspondent, STI College – Parañaque

Eat moderate portions. Anything in excess will not do you any good. Make sure that you pick the right snacks.
Sweat It Out Hit the road and jog or squeeze in short walks if you don’t have time for a full workout. Find a gym buddy to make your routine more fun and exciting or join a sports club. Get enough sleep for your mind and body to function efficiently.
Skip the elevator when you can and take the stairs. Go to the gym on weekends when you can. Vary your routine by trying out different activities such as swimming, cycling, and running.

iPhone 5C
The Next iPhones iPhone enthusiasts are happy to hear that after much rumor and speculation, Apple has finally launched in September 2013 the newest additions to the iPhone family — the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C!
If you are a fan of The Hunger Games series, then you will also surely enjoy the movie Divergent.
The movie is directed by Neil Burger and stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Zoë Kravitz, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Maggie Q, Ray Stevenson, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Ashley Judd, and Kate Winslet.

With an iOS 7 operating system, a new A7 processor that brings up to twice the CPU and graphics performance, an M7 motion co-processor that measures motion data even while the device is on sleep, a fingerprint sensor, and an improved 8 MP iSight camera that features larger aperture and sensor, iPhone 5S is definitely an upgrade from its predecessor and worth the wait. iPhone 5S also introduced a new technology, True Tone, that adjusts color and intensity for over 1,000 combinations thus making the photos look more natural. And apart from the seemingly boring white and black color options, iPhone 5S will also be available in champagne gold.
C is for color! Though still not considered to be cheap, the iPhone 5C is still more affordable compared to iPhone 5S with its hard-coated polycarbonate shell. It’s like a slightly curvier iPhone 5 — with the same features and specifications — but without the elegant aluminum shell. Its biggest attraction is its vibrant and youthful hues as iPhone fans can choose from the colors blue, green, white, yellow, and pink to brighten up their day! These new Apple phones are expected to be released in the Philippines either late 2013 or early 2014. Sources: http://www.apple.com/iphone-5s/ http://www.apple.com/iphone-5c/

A Song on the Grave By: Ma. Romelyn Agua, 2nd yr. MMA STI College – Southwoods
She sat still under the willow tree alone, On top of this gravestone she hummed Through the serenity she felt, She hummed along the nature’s wealth Suddenly she heard a soft melody, A rhythm that is so heavenly The dry leaves dances with the wind’s motion, A tune of an earthly apparition
“Under that willow tree I sat on this grave, An offering is this songI gave It is not of agony but praise, For the lost souls to find their ways.” “And now to you I play this song, A song I perfected when you came along For years it’s been a song for the dead, And to the day I used to dread.”
She looked around and saw an entity An emblem of beauty, a phantom of mystery Playing an instrument with passion and grace, A wonderful song in a melodic pace Along the pale sky and a windy day, In the graveyard where the souls lay The notes fly and echo Like butterflies in the meadow
She did not look but realized, In her heart the song familiarized The heartbreaks and the goodbyes, A tear fell in her eyes He went on and touched her shoulder, And the air grew a little colder “I may have left without a word, But never you’re alone in the world”
“Lady, why cast a glimpse on me? For applaud, I am not worthy.” The music died peacefully as he speaks. In humble silence falls the note streak “Yours is the music of melancholy, I cannot bear your agony.” She answered as he stood across, Beside the walls aged by moss He rested his instrument on the green pastures To the view of the willow tree, he ventures “A lady feels agony in a song. A song perfected to be wrong.” “It is a melody to the dead, A music not worthy to spread A tribute to the departed souls, A collection of twisted roles.”
“This is the song I made for you, The symbol of a promise so true Just look behind you and read, And wish to good I lead” “I never wanted to agonize, For leaving you I apologize Just remember the song always, The song I perfected in my last days” She looked behind but he disappears, Nothing but dry leaves with the wind stirs And a gravestone with words engraved: “THIS LAST SONG TO YOU I GAVE” She stood up and looked up on the sky, With teary eyes she whispered goodbye On green grass lies an old violin, A memory of what they have been.
