Following the success of the previous advocacy runs for the Pasig River, Team STI once again unfolded its solid support to the environmental cause as it sends the largest school contingent to the fourth installment of ABSCBN Foundation’s Kapit Bisig para sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP) run on September 30, 2012 in Quezon City. The race kicked off at the Quezon Memorial Circle with more than 11,000 students, faculty members, and staff from STI Campuses in Metro Manila including Alabang, Caloocan, Cubao, Shaw, Fairview, Global City, Las Piñas, Makati, Muñoz-EDSA, Novaliches, Parañaque, Quezon Avenue, Recto, Taft, and first-time runners from Ortigas-Cainta, who all geared up to do their share in caring for the environment. “We really want to be part of this long-term advocacy and we encourage our students to have an active role in their communities, especially in protecting the environment. Since this year’s run will not just be for the ongoing efforts of rehabilitating the Pasig River but will also include the waterways of Quezon City, San Juan, and Mandaluyong, we want to be there to support them in the best way that we can,” shares Shiela Magano, School Operations Manager of STI Headquarters. In addition to the 5K and 15K races, the Run for Pasig River got even bigger this year with the new “Ride and Roll” category for bikers and skateboard enthusiasts. Being a Restaurant Manager

PROS
Nickname: “Renz” Course: Hospitality and Restaurant Services (HRS) School: STI College – Global City Occupation: Manager, Buddhalicious Food, Inc. — Hap Chan My childhood dream was: To become a popular theater artist. Motto: Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.
A Typical Day: I always start my day full of positive vibes and energy because I have to exude that aura and confidence while dealing with my colleagues and of course, the customers. Generally, I oversee the restaurant operations from the marketing side of the business down to the goings-on in the kitchen. Based on my experience, you cannot really predict a typical work day scenario because a lot of things can happen. At times, you deal with the customers’ complaints, troubleshoot some kitchen concerns, and other difficulties concerning the restaurant. But no matter how challenging the work is, at the end of the day, I ensure that we achieve our goal and that is to give our customers a superior dining experience.
Most Memorable Experience:
• Can you communicate your ideas clearly, think out of the box, and execute plans flawlessly? • Are you ready to work under extreme pressure?

Year Graduated: May 2010
P Restaurant managers always encounter tough situations and a wide variety of customer types.
• Do you see yourself managing people and supervising several activities at once?
If you answered “yes” to most of these questions, then you might just be cut out to become a Restaurant Manager!
P The job is very rewarding and fulfilling. Moreover, there are opportunities waiting for them outside the country.
P It is very demanding and challenging since overseeing the overall business performance of the restaurant is the primary goal of the manager.
So, are you ready to be one? Answer the following questions to find out.
• Can you handle tight situations and address them without losing your focus and composure?
Name: Rency Lajara Capuno
CONS
But drawing a crowd to a restaurant requires more than just good food. Equally important is the way the customers feel while in the restaurant. This physical and emotional response is a result of the overall dining experience of the customers which includes the food, service, price, and among others. And some of these challenges rely in the hands of a Restaurant Manager.
• Are you committed to learn something new and adapt to changes and innovations?
P Although the scope of work is broad, restaurant managers enjoy their day-to-day activities from dealing with different kinds of people to ensuring the smooth operations of the restaurant. The diversity of the tasks makes it exciting and less boring for them.
P You will gain insights and solid experience in running the business which you can apply in the future if you plan to put up your own restaurant or food chain.
Restaurant Management is very in-demand today and to borrow a cliché, it never goes out of style since the food industry worldwide is considerably a lucrative niche for investors and entrepreneurs alike. In our country, the industry has flourished well because of Pinoys’ love for food and that’s the reason why we have a lot of restaurants everywhere, serving both local and international cuisines.
FAST FACTS
Meet the jack-ofall-trades, Renz, with his college friends
My most memorable work experience happened when I was still a dining crew a year ago. We had a guest couple from Singapore and they always visit the restaurant to dine in during their stay here in the Philippines. As a crew, I see to it that I was giving them the best service I can offer and let them experience the typical Filipino hospitality. What made this so special was when one of the guests wrote a note to our Manager. In the note, the guest was very thankful and even mentioned my name as one of the most amazing staff in the restaurant. It just gave me a different sense of fulfillment and confidence knowing that my performance was recognized and commended. Stimuli 7

Jade Abalos, one of the students present shares, “With this kind of activity, we feel that we are one with them. They deserve our respect, love, and care.” Today the Little Sisters of the Poor serve in 31 countries around the world, including homes in Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Penang, New Zealand, and the Philippines. Makes It Big Everyone has a big childhood dream. Some children may dream of becoming knights and princesses, others want to become doctors, lawyers, engineers, astronauts, and scientists when they grow up. Former Mr. STI Herbert Victor “Hervi” Narvaez once dreamed of becoming a commercial airline pilot. He ended up choosing a different career path, but he has touched down in different cities around the world. Hervi meets Canada. Part of Hervi’s current job is to collaborate with international managers and technology experts at the TELUS Corporate Office in Canada.

A Turn of Fate
A Leader in the Making
Hervi grew up in a simple household in San Andres, Manila. His parents owned a catering business that provided their family with a fairly comfortable life.
“Someday, people will look up to me as a leader,” Hervi kept this in mind while he was working in the corporate world. A few months later in his first job, he decided to join TELUS International, the second largest telecommunications company in Canada, as a Telecommunications Technician. Because of his outstanding performance, he was promoted to Team Leader of the Consumer Technical Support group after just one year on the job.
It was in the early years of Hervi’s studies in an Engineering program in an exclusive private institution when their family business started to decline. Because he wanted to help lessen their family’s expenses, Hervi decided to postpone his college education for a while. Determined to help his parents and be able to continue his studies, Hervi started to work different jobs — he experienced working as a service crew in a fast food chain, a clerk in a convenience store, and a cashier in a video rental store, among others. When he was able to save enough to continue his studies, he decided to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree at STI College – Shaw. As a result of his diligence and hard work as a working student, Hervi landed a job in the Information Technology industry immediately after graduation. Through a leading global business process outsourcing company, Hervi provided technical services support for Dell, one of the largest computer technology corporations in the world.
Today, Hervi works as an Operations Manager at TELUS International, directly working with top management and international clients. He has also helped establish various businesses in Canada and Guatemala. Hervi considers his entire journey in life, with its ups and downs, as an inspiration to never stop moving forward. “Success doesn’t have a secret ingredient. What matters is how much you crave for it. I thought about that because when my family decided to run a catering business, trying times came to us and that’s when I decided that I will do everything to succeed so I can help my family and make them proud,” Hervi shares. We may forget our childhood dreams as we get older, but some believe that our childhood dreams have a lot to do with our current success. Hervi wanted to fly when he was a kid; while he didn’t end up becoming a pilot, he’s still bound to soar to greater heights. Stimuli 19

Our choices. Our voices. Anyone who has belonged to a group — in school, at work, or in a community — has faced the challenge of selecting a leader worthy of earning the group’s trust and confidence. Choosing the right leader is one of the first steps in working effectively with a group and is also a crucial responsibility for each individual member because selecting a good leader can take the entire group to higher levels of success and progress. Many Filipinos are now preparing to make an informed choice for this year’s midterm elections based on the careful evaluation of their preferred candidates’ qualities, skills, and principles. As young leaders chosen by their fellow students, we asked some of the student council members of different STI campuses to share the things that they believe are essential for the makings of a good leader. Read on as they boldly speak out some of their very insightful opinions:
The Old-Timer versus The Newcomer Is it out with the old and in with the new? Or do we count on the years of experience of veterans instead of looking for new leadership qualities in younger leaders?
“An experienced leader may have an edge over newcomers concerning the fundamentals of leadership and service. Also, the competencies of seasoned leaders are first-hand and social-based. They have had many chances to work in different contexts and situations, and they’ve collected experiences that may give them an advantage.”
The Reputable versus The Purpose-Driven Do we think back or look forward? Do we yearn for good reputation— integrity, transparency, and family history or a strong sense of purpose— the leader’s unrelenting passion to pursue a vision for progress?
“Your reputation is something that you earn from other people based on who you are. Having a good reputation means that you are trustworthy and you serve as an inspiration to your community which is important in becoming an effective leader.” Rachel Acosta, Student Council President, STI College – Baguio
“No matter how tough the situation is as long as you have the heart to achieve your purpose, nothing can go wrong. It is the goal that determines how far a leader can go just to achieve the group’s objectives. I believe that all good leaders are driven by their purpose.” Jayson Fajardo, Student Council President, STI College – Ortigas-Cainta
The Socially Involved versus The Academic Achiever Do we put more value on a leader’s impressive educational background or is extensive community involvement more admirable?
“They say, leadership is built on relationships and the only way to establish a strong and mutual relationship with others is through social involvement, direct interactions, and personal communications with the community members. For me, a leader who is socially involved only shows his commitment and dedication to service.” Janus Agcaoili, Peer Facilitators Group Officer, STI College – Cubao
“In my opinion, an educated leader can make better decisions because he/she can look at various issues from different perspectives. As a representative of a community, it’s also vital that the leader asks and raises concerns with different people and this requires analytical and critical thinking — essential skills that may be developed in the course of learning.” Rose-Ann Alejandro, Student Council Treasurer, STI College – Alabang
Carlo Polache, Student Council President, STI College – Balanga
“A change in leadership may provide an opportunity to start fresh and anew. An aspiring leader may bring positive change through innovation, new ideas, and a cutting-edge approach in leadership. After all, everyone deserves to be given a chance to prove their worth and purpose.” Genghis Khan Ang, Student Council President, STI College – Caloocan

An effective leader must possess abilities that will help in surpassing the group’s expectations. However, these qualities may depend on the objectives and priorities of the group or community. Leaders can be found anywhere there’s a need for initiative and collaboration among people working together to achieve a common goal. And while the responsibilities of the group’s individual members may differ from those of the leader, their active participation and involvement remain critical to the group’s success.
As individuals in larger communities, one of our most important roles is to educate ourselves and be aware of the things that matter to us. Whether in choosing our country’s next leaders or the officers of our school club, speaking out and being involved in making decisions can help us achieve more than we can imagine. Because for every opportunity to be involved in the quest for the greater good, sometimes all it takes is just one voice — from our group, our school, our community — to be heard to make a huge difference.

Leaving a Mark with Every Step STI College – Tanauan enthusiastically participated in a Fun Run for the Orphans held on March 24, 2012 at the Fernando Air Base Grandstand in Lipa City, Batangas. Almost 40 National Service and Training Program (NSTP) students, faculty members, and staff joined in this worthy cause and ran in the 5k category.
1998

2004
1998 marked the first Halalan partnership of ABS-CBN and STI. Charie Villa, then ABS-CBN’s News Gathering Head, shared that “the network had been reporting on the precinct counts since several elections ago. ABSCBN began to take its reporting a notch higher in 1998 by tying up with STI to provide a more systematic tally and tabulation of results.” This partnership has mobilized more than 5,000 STI students, faculty members, and staff nationwide to work together for a comprehensive election coverage and media quick count in the country.
STI’s second partnership with ABS-CBN for Halalan 2001 gathered over 13,000 volunteers from various STI campuses nationwide to help ensure that an honest, orderly, and peaceful election was upheld. It also enabled STI to showcase the pivotal role of technology in bringing the latest election results.
For the third time, ABS-CBN chose STI to be its partner for the Halalan coverage to provide Filipinos early election results with the emphasis on the correct sampling of vote to get the profile of how Filipinos voted nationwide with the help of 12,000 student volunteers from STI schools nationwide. The objective of the partnership remains to be bringing fast and reliable vote counts to the public, in the words of STI President and CEO Monico V. Jacob, “STI and ABS-CBN share the same objective, and that is to help the country attain its goals through clean elections.”
2007 On May 14, 2007, the fourth time that STI partners with ABS-CBN, STI deployed more than 14,000 volunteers in around 22,000 precincts covering 48 provinces nationwide. STI VP for School Operations and Co-Chair of STI Halalan 2007 Committee Resty O. Bundoc concludes, “Finally, it is a story of success… The ABS-CBN and STI Media Count worked because it is backed up by experience, driven by commitment to serve the public, powered by technology, and fueled by the idealism of the Filipino youth.” 22 Stimuli
2010 With the automation of the elections in 2010, ABS-CBN and STI has sealed their partnership for the year-round campaign, Boto Mo, i-Patrol Mo (BMPM): Ako ang Simula. The BMPM team set up registrations nationwide to call on Boto Patrollers or citizen journalists who have volunteered to be watchdogs in their communities. Tagged as “Patrol ng Kabataan Para sa Bayan,” STI Boto Patrollers were part of the community refered to as “a people power with new technology.”
2013 As STI’s partnership with ABSCBN spans for more than a decade, STI will once again work hand-in-hand with ABS-CBN in the upcoming 2013 national election polls by conducting voter’s education to the public, from Luzon to Visayas and Mindandao. And as Citizen STI, STIers will be part of this quest for clean elections by serving as Bayan Patrollers during the on-the-ground activities of Bayan Mo, I-Patrol Mo: Tayo Na! Halalan 2013.
NSTP Instructor Benjamin Pagco imparts, “Knowing that it was the orphans who benefitted from this fun run gave us an extra energy boost to run with all our strength. It was such an exhilarating experience as we realized that in our own way, we were able to bring hope to these children.”
The Fun Run for the Orphans was organized by the 440th Aircraft Maintenance Group and aims to promote the importance of being healthy and fit, and at the same time extend a helping hand to the orphaned children of Sr. Marian Bertilla Vangelista’s Home for Children. *Special thanks to Cherry Fusilero, Faculty Member, STI College – Tanauan
Lucena Unites for Mt. Banahaw By: Hazel de Guzman, Faculty Member, STI College – Lucena
After a successful tree planting activity at the foot of Mt. Banahaw last year, STI College – Lucena spearheaded another project for a cause. This time, it’s Takbo Para sa Bundok Banahaw, a fun run wherein more than 500 individuals from different areas in Lucena participated, including students and faculty members of STI College – Lucena. The fun run had three categories: 3k, 5k, and 10k. All the participants received certificates and the winners were awarded with medals by Vice Mayor Roderick Alcala, who also ran in the 3k category.
Mr. Bill Marlow Estinal, a faculty member of STI College – Lucena and also the over-all chairman of the event, shares, “It was such a liberating experience to see different people running as one team for one cause. At the end of the day, it does not matter who outruns who because we are all winners here.” This advocacy aimed to awaken environmental consciousness among various members of the community and to accumulate funds for planting indigenous trees in Mt. Banahaw. The activity was furthered strengthened with the support of the local government officials and different organizations.

Grammar Peeves Since social media blasted into our lives, we’ve seen a lot of changes in the way people talk and write to express themselves. While numerous buzzwords have emerged in social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, we can also see a decline when it comes to the proper use of grammar. Chances are, when we encounter a grammatical error in a post or tweet, we let it slide. However, you have to keep in mind that, aside from our background and education, we are also sometimes judged by how we speak and write — our ability to communicate.
Then vs. Than
Here’s a few common grammar mistakes and find out if you have also committed a social blunder:
Advice vs. Advise
You’re vs. Your Though they sound alike, these two words are different as night and day. “You’re” is the contracted form of “you are.” While, “your” is the possessive form and used to express something that belongs to “you.” Examples: I’m glad that you’re finally learning how to swim. At such a young age, your cooking skills are very impressive.
It’s vs. Its Since only an apostrophe differentiates these two words, people often mix it up. To avoid confusion, remember that “it’s” is the contracted form of “it is” and “it has.” Meanwhile, “its” is a possessive form of the pronoun “it,” meaning “something belonging to it.” Examples: It’s been a long and tiring day. The bird lost some of its feathers when it fell from the tree.

This is another pair of words that is frequently misused. Bear in mind that “then” indicates time or when you talk about a sequence of event and giving step-by-step instructions. On the contrary, “than” is used when expressing comparisons. Examples: I think History is more interesting than Math. Our parents invite our friends to eat with us every now and then.
Though these two words are almost similar in meaning, the difference lies in how they are used and should never be interchangeable. “Advice” is used as a noun that means suggestion or recommendation whereas “advise” is a verb that refers to the act of giving advice. Examples: My dad gives sound advice so everyone listens to him. I was advised not to buy a new laptop since the one I’m using right now is still working perfectly well.
Into vs. In To Even professional writers often get stumped with this pair of words, but if you focus on the message the confusion clears up. “Into” is a preposition that expresses movement, action or transformation. “In to,” on the contrary, is the adverb “in” followed by the preposition “to” and is generally short for “in order to.” Examples: In the story of Cinderella, the carriage turned into a pumpkin when the clock struck 12. In the old days, children believed that the tooth fairy comes in to replace their lost tooth with a small payment.

On the Shelf MAN OF STEEL Date of Release: June 2013
Inferno Dan Brown, author of “The Da Vinci Code,” marks the return of his famous character renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon in his latest book “Inferno.” The story is set in Italy, and in his official website, Brown promises his readers to a “journey deep into this (Dante’s Inferno) mysterious realm — a landscape of codes, symbols, and more than a few secret passageways.”
Originally scheduled for release in December 2012, anxious Superman fans had to wait further as the much-anticipated movie’s release was moved to June 2013. The DC Comics superhero’s movie began brewing in 2008 by Warner Brothers and is under the helms of director Zack Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan. Starring Henry Cavill as Superman, with Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Michael Shannon as General Zod, the long runway for the movie had given rise to its share of issues like Cavill, who is not American, landing the title role of the all-American superhero, to the movie posters showing Superman’s new costume, and yet another with the Man of Steel in handcuffs. With tight-lipped Snyder and Nolan, there are no let ups to date as to how the twists of the plot will go. 32 Stimuli

Writer’s Block Sweet Distraction By: Jill Duarte, 2nd yr. IT STI Tagum
I longed to write something worthwhile Yet grasping of words had been hard and I just sighed. My mind dwells elsewhere, As my heart had been to somewhere. In my thoughts you had been Like an irresistible advertisement, In my tranquil mind you’ve been Effortless in stealing moments. You’re my charming and sweetest distraction, Somehow that made me grin And leads me Into more than just an attraction. I could actually just appreciate you as you And to me that’s not vague, Because in your emergence, I just found a faience. Many times you had said, Blunt words you had uttered. No matter how much I wanted to wreck your neck, I would still love to hug you instead and just shrink. I’m a hardheaded gal, Well, it seems like you’re going to tame me, pal. I’m not a typical sweet girl I used to be, But it seems like you’ll omit the inhibitions in me. I love your unknown scent That let me know you’re just around and present I easily miss your voice, That could garner lots of smiles and noise. In your absence, I could be damn missing your presence. Who would have thought I could be this jealous, In things not that enormous. But I still longed to thank you anyway, For making me feel this way. And to thank God, For having you in all odds.

I’ve kept holding on to these feelings, As the days keep going by, my thoughts of you Keep getting stronger and stronger. I don’t want to be just a memory With this in mind I want to get closer to you, Wherever you may be I want to be by your side. So let’s find a way to be closer to one another, Not being with you feels like an eternity apart I don’t want to dream such sad dreams anymore, As I’ve spent so many lonely nights thinking of you Although I thought I understood your feelings, I realized, for the first time, when I lost you That the treasure I so cherished is gone I can’t bear to be without you anymore So I will find a way, I’ll bear the blunt of your cold shoulders As my heart tightens to the cold sorrow, Blown in by the chilling season’s breeze. It was never enough Telling you how much I love you But I’ll say it to you alone, Even though I can’t put it all into word So we just follow our dreams, As the tears appear and run down our cheeks Seeing those tears as our eyes meet, The weight of my melancholy disappears, At the same time we wish that we could stay Under this dazzling brocade of stars forever.
