ewl Stuff Is brand everything?

Could the LG PRADA, become the iPHONE’s biggest competitor?.

14

Stilo Magazine www.stilomag.com

No matter where you go these days, there is at least one person who has an iPhone, or so you may think. Companies like LG and Samsung are aware of the competition that the iPhone brings, so they are producing not only iPhone look-a-likes but also phones that bring the credibility of status and the many features that its major competitor brings. The LG PRADA, unifies the prestigious fashion icon PRADA, along with its strong association as being a fashion technological icon themselves to produce, a cell phone that looks very similar to the notorious iPhone. But, one could only wonder, “is brand really everything?” According to the many consumers that brought the iPhones sales to over $22 million, the answer may be yes. Mac did something that not many other companies could do with a cell phone…. make it a FASHION MUST HAVE. So as the iPhone is today’s hottest trend, could the LG PRADA, bring its competitor to its knees? I honestly doubt that. Mac’s strategy of exclusivity and distinction has peaked even a child’s desire. It would take a lot more than a looka-like to change this. People care about what the phone has to offer, but it has become more than just the phone. It is the name. It is the same reason why a billionaire, carries a AMEX, Black Card… just to say that they have one.

he Rich Knokoff

For the past few years, being frugal is a fashionista's best asset. As we still love great designers like John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and even Hussein Chalayen, mixing expensive high end pieces with low costing stylish finds, has been a trend that has become extremely popular. More and more, people who once bought a new purse at their favorite boutique or department store are now trading in old ones at local consignment stores. For the middle class and lower income market, buying posh items is often out of the questions. People are starting to respect the value of money and are worried less about the brand, but are looking for quality and products that give them the look that they want. Steve Madden, a well known brand that has provided products from shoes to sunglasses, have been known for products that resemble s those of higher-end designers. Steve Madden has successfully provided quality and stylish shoes to a market who could never quite afford to spend thousands of dollars on one shoe, but still desired to look just as good. Recently on December 15, 2009, Balenciaga, one of the most the industry’s most respected fashion houses, have filed a lawsuit against Steve Madden, Incorporated for copyright infringement. Allegedly, Steve Madden intentionally copied Balenciaga’s 2007’s Lego Shoes ($4,175) and sold them for just under $100 bucks.

Whether or not, Steve Madden Incorporated should be sued, depends on who you talk to. It is true, that Steve Madden would not be so successful, if the original show was priced so the average person could afford it. But we must also remember, that Balenciaga, as well as McQueen are not average designers. Their own success has been a result of their exclusivity. If everyone could have it, it wouldn’t be special. The fact is, there is a line that should not be crossed. In business, ideas are stolen everyday, but there is a point when, it is crucial to make a responsible business decision that is ethical and will not negatively hurt your business in the long run. Stilo Magazine www.stilomag.com

Noted as one of the top visionaries of the 21st century and one of the few designers that have taken creativity to a new height, Hussein Chalayen emerges with another fusion, “Earth Bound.” Earth Bound, Chalayen’s Fall/Winter 2009/2010 collection, displays another one of his collections which expresses a vision of science, technology and fashion. Recently featured in The Design Museum in London and hired as a Creative Director, by Puma, Chalayen has caught the attention of many people in the fashion world as being a creative leader that expresses fashion as a melting pot of the many elements of the world rather than just another trend in the latest season. “Earth Bound”, features visual representations of earth-like elements found at a construction site, such as: rock, soil and concrete. Chalayen’s collection featured many different shades of grey, black and some other mixtures of earth tones. Featured also on the runway were looks that displayed a solid form, mixed with constructed like pieces that added a visual effect to the collection’s theme. The entire look resulted in strong, confident women who display a certain sex appeal that permeates throughout the industry this season. Though Chalayen is known for very complex and intellectual themes, this season is not so hard to figure out. As the economy still worries the best in the industry, many designers are reconstructing or enhancing their vision by displaying the best of what they have to offer. The most successful designers are the one who have proven to maintain an out of the box mentality rather than conforming with predictable norms and patterns. This season, a few designers like, Chalayen has created looks that not only empowers women but represent unique ideas based on the world around us. While fashion has always been the greatest story teller of current events, Hussein Chalayen has continued to be not only a fashion designer but a journalist that that expresses his thoughts through fabrics.

“It is more than just what the hottest trends are, it is knowing what young women want today… to be different, beautiful and confident.”

Stilo Magazine www.stilomag.com

Iceberg was created by the husband and wife duo Silvano Gerani and Guiliana Marchini. Originally known as a knitwear company, Iceberg now produces a wide line Ready to Wear clothing. Their Fall 2009’ line, features a collection filled with shapes, texture, hard elements and neon colors. The creators’ son Paolo Gerani, has proven to be a very valuable and strong force behind the brand’s image as it showcases a line filled with this season’s hottest trends. The vision of their Fall collection is based on the works of the artists: Robert Indiana and Giacomo Balla. The collection brings forth a mixture of soft fluffy furs, knits, leather, zippers and sequins. As stylish outerwear is a fashion focus, this season, their chunky sweaters, combined with an innovative mixture of knits, leather and fur has created unique shapes and forms. Iceberg this season, doesn’t seam to be the most popular brand on the market, but their display of artistry, precision and form has surpassed many other designers on the market. Their look this season gives their target audience, young party goers a sophistication that stands out in the crowd. It is more than just what the hottest trends are, it is knowing what young women want today… to be different, beautiful and confident.

GO ASSASSIN

“When people put on our clothing, we want them to feel like a different person; like a model, an alien, or a super-hero. Whatever lets them get out of their head for a while and explore a side of themselves that they might not have seen before.”

Q: First, I would like to say thank you for giving us this opportunity for us to interview you. Can you tell Stilo a little about yourselves? Well firstly, thank you for giving us the chance to collaborate on a shoot for your wonderful magazine. Everyone on the team is exceptionally talented and an absolute joy to work with. About ego assassin specifically, we are a Toronto-based designer/manufacturer label, specializing exclusively in latex clothing. Q: What is the story behind you Brand? what are your plans to take it further or to the next level? The story behind ego assassin is one of transformation. That’s essentially where the name comes from; the idea that one can change their lives and their selves into whatever they want them to be, as long as the check their ego at the door and do what it takes. We want to make clothing that will help people do that. When people put on our clothing, we want them to feel like a different person; like a model, an alien, or a super-hero. Whatever lets them get out of their head for a while and explore a side of themselves that they might not have seen before. As for taking it further, we’d like to work on more men’s designs because there just isn’t enough interesting menswear in this market and we think the demand is starting to come around for that. We also have some long-range plans for integrating our clients more closely into the design process. We want to give them the tools to design their own perfect latex outfit. What could be more transformational than that? Q:

what are some of the things that inspire you and your collection?

We’re inspired a lot by spy movies, super hero comics, and science-fiction novels. Also by naughty dreams and the shenanigans of our friends on late Saturday nights and early Sunday mornings. Q: Describe Ego Assassin? How does your style compares to others in the industry? In comparison to the rest of the industry, our style is very clean and simple. We like to focus on pieces that are easy to wear and flattering to the body. Q: What is your source of inspiration for your fall 2009 collection?

26

Stilo Magazine www.stilomag.com

We don’t actually have seasonal collections. We work a little differently than traditional fashion houses that try to set styles and colours years in advance. We prefer to work on whatever is inspiring us at the moment, so we tend to release a few designs at a time at various points throughout the year. Since we sell directly to our clients through our website, this allows us to update our collection more organically. For the past year or so our inspiration has come from imagining what a secret, uber-riche fetish society of the future might look like. It’s basically a visual mash-up of “EYES WIDE SHUT” and “BLADE RUNNEr”. Q: Who would you say is the kind of men and woman that you are attracting with your collection? We like to be open-minded and adventurous with our designs, so that tends to attract openminded and adventurous people. Q: Have there been any Celebreties spotted wearing your pieces ? What was your reaction to that? We are always honoured to see people wearing our clothing out in the world. Our pieces have been worn at parties and in photo shoots by IDELSY, APNEA, MOSH, JADE VIXEN AND SHARONTK. Q: Are your pieces being sold anywhere? Where can your customers purchase them? Our pieces can be purchased primarily on our website (www.ego-assassin.com), but occasionally they can be found in a few select shops. At the moment, STORMY LEATHER in LA and PLASTIK WRAP in Toronto are carrying limited selections. Q: What fashion events have you participated in this year? Do you plan to bring any of your collection to the US, in the future? Our line has been featured in several shows this year, including FETISH EVOLUTION in Germany, SMack! in New York City and Subspace in Toronto. We were especially excited to participate in the official HELLO KITTY 35TH ANNIVERSARY FASHION SHOW in Los Angeles. Q: Who in fashion inspires you the most?and why? We’re most inspired by ALEXANDER MCQUEEN, HUSSEIN CHALAYAN, COCO CHANEL, and RODARTE. We love primitive, intuitive passion and deceptively simple but studied lines. Q: What are your plans for this year? First and foremost, more menswear. Also, we’ll be headlining TORTURE GARDEN TORONTO in the Spring. Q: Describe your up and coming collection. ( Season, Name, etc If you can reveal.) TIFFANY ENTERS THE THUNDERDOME. And that’s all we can say.

odel Diary:: Words by:: Celia Johnson

Life as a model in the fashion industry can have its ups and its downs. I mean the fantasy life, where everyone wakes up to champagne, decked in the latest PRADA, LOUIS VUITTON handbags, and GUCCI sunglasses from that fabulous party you attended the night before can seem like the high life, but the behind the scene story is that there is much, much hard work involved. When asked to write the dear diary section I thought “oh boy, what am I going to say”. Should I write about backstage experiences, dealing with agencies around the world, the countless no’s and yes’s over the while, but then I thought to myself why not write about one of my greatest achievements in my career. Which I would have to say is the relationship that I have developed with Luxury Brand Balenciaga. I know this might sound cliché, but it all started on a wet rainy day in Paris. My agency at the time had sent over the information the night before and all though I had known of the brand I hadn’t at the time realized exactly the magnitude of who they were. Regardless however, I knew that this was a potential client that I needed, and as a model you always need clients who love you. I laid out my clothes, and hopped in the bed, because you definitely need your beauty sleep. The next afternoon I set out to the casting. When I arrived I realized that for the first time it was just going to be me. Now you have imagine that when attending a casting on a regular day the client will normally see between fifty to sometimes hundreds of girls depending on the job. I couldn’t decide which was worse, competing with all the other models or knowing that if the answer was no then it was based solely on me. Either way I had no choice I was already in the waiting room and they were calling my name. When you step into a casting the first thing you do is shake

30

Stilo Magazine www.stilomag.com

hands and state your name “Bonjour. I’m Celia nice to meet you.” He asked for my book. I sat there nervously thinking of little anecdotes I could say while he asked me the basics. How old are you? Where are you from? After which he put my book down and gave me the once over. That moment which probably lasted less than a second seemed like forever. I wasn’t sure at first, but I realized that he was saying that he would like me to try on an outfit to see how it would fit. Of course I was ready to burst at the seams at hearing this, but I kept the expression calm and collected and let him know that I would be happy to. We went into the other room with an outfit already hanging on the racks. It was a pair of skinny jeans, with probably one of the fiercest shoes I had ever seen, took a few Polaroid shots, and that was it. “Merci” he says and looks at the door. I take my cue and leave feeling a bit confused. I mean, did they like me or not. I went through the rest of my day uneasy, as I knew that this job could very well take me to another level in my career. The next day I heard nothing, and even the day after that. I resigned myself to thinking that maybe I didn’t book it, and figured that hopefully I would have another chance. The third day I received a call from the agency stating that Balenciaga had confirmed me for one presentation and 10 days of showroom. Needless to say I was elated, my first major booking from a respected fashion house. I have been working with Balenciaga now for over 2 years in many different capacities from doing showroom, to presentations, to private shows, and have developed more than only a business relationship, but a friendship as well. Working with them has allowed me to experience the heart, and dedication it takes from the designer’s vision, to the runway shows to the very own store windows, and realize that the champagne and caviar are all apart of the reward. Peace Love Light Blessings Celia :) www.stilomag.com Stilo Magazine

Sultry sounds of Saidah Baba Talibah, brings a unique mixture of jazz, pop and soul to the music world.

aidah Baba Talibah

74

Stilo Magazine www.stilomag.com

Q: First, I would like to say thank you for giving us this opportunity for us to interview you. Can you tell Stilo a little about yourselves? A: My name is Saidah Baba Talibah. Saidah (Sa-EE-dah) means happy and fortunate. Baba means born on Thursday (which I was). And Talibah (Ta-LEE-bah) means seeker after knowledge or student. I was born with this name. My grandfather on my mother’s side was Muslim, so that’s how I got the Muslim/Arabic names. Much of my family (as you’ll see in the answer to the next question) is in the arts. I went to a school for the arts as a dance major, although lately I’ve been focusing heavily on music. Q: What attracted you to music? A: My mother, Salome Bey, she is a singer herself. But many creative people surround me in my family. My uncle (Andy Bey), aunt (Geraldine de Haas), my cousins (Aisha & Darius de Haas, Ronnell Bey, Marven Jefferson, Cara Page, Denese Matthews) and my sister (Tuku Matthews). Q: How long have you been a songwriter and a musician? A: As I said, music has been a part of my life since before birth. It’s like being born into a family of doctors. I’ve been writing and creating music since I was little, but I really only started to take myself seriously a little over 10 years ago. Q: What is your greatest source of inspiration, when writing your music? A: Life is my greatest inspiration – everything all around. Q: Which is your favorite, Writing or Performing? A: The whole process of creating something new is beautiful and exciting, but I ADORE being onstage, so I’ll say performing. It’s all about the collective energy shared between my band and the audience and then the fact that performing affords you the opportunity to interact with different energies, so it makes for a whole new and fresh experience. Q: Where are you from? A: Toronto, Canada Q: Do you feel that your culture has had an effect on your music? A: Most definitely my culture has an effect on my music, because my culture is part of my life experience, so that will dictate what I want my music to feel like, sound like, taste like and smell like. This is my culture coming from Canada as a child of an American mother and a West Indian father, but the West Indian father came to Canada (from St. Kitts) when he was eleven, so that is my culture. It is a mish-mash of many different elements. Q: What are the Phone Demos and when is it coming out? A: The Phone Demos are out now and available wherever you can buy music digitally/online. The Phone Demos are simply demos I recorded on my cell phone. I was in a songwriting session with my guitarist, Donna Grantis, and we had no means of documenting/demoing the ideas for the songs that we were in the process of writing,

so I just recorded it on my phone. I ended up uploading one song to myspace, and played it for a bunch of people and the songs, sound quality and vibe were all met with intrigue and positive feedback, so I decided to release them. Q: When are we going to see a video from SAIDAH? A: Well, I’m in the midst of completing a few videos for The Phone Demos, sometime within the next few months and spring. Q: Are you signed to a label? If yes, how is it going? If no, what are your plans around that? The only label that applies to me right now is DIY (Do It Yourself), so no; I’m not on a label. In fact, I’ve chosen the route of fan funding my album – you can go to www.MakeMeWannaScream.com -- basically, I’ve set up a loyalty support program where people can pre-purchase the album and in turn every dollar goes towards finishing the album. There are nine different tiers and the more you give, the more gifts you get for helping to make this album (ie. exclusive t-shirts, posters, buttons, autographed pictures, living room concert, dinner, etc;) Q: Where do you see yourself in the next five years? A: In five years, I see myself having finished at least a second album, possibly onto a third – touring A LOT all over the world. I see myself possibly having moved from Toronto to somewhere else in the world, either the States or Europe. Q: What is the plan for 2010? A: The plan is to finish and release the album, (S)Cream, tour it and create a profile on the world’s stages. Q: What do you hope to accomplish as a musician? A: Longevity, Loyalty, Growth and Respect. Q: What is your greatest accomplishment so far? A: My greatest accomplishment so far is simply putting one foot in front of the other, taking the steps towards my dreams, every one of them. Q: Who is your role model, how have they influenced your decisions in your life? A: My parents were my biggest role models; they shaped what influenced me in music and life. They allowed me many different life experiences in the comfort of my own home and outside of it as well. I was and still am, a very observant person, so I saw a lot, took note, followed suit or didn’t, but in the end, I had them to give me everything I ever wanted. Q: How can your fans get your music, and latest news about you? A: My website: www.sbtmusic.com; My mailing list: www.sbtmusic. fanbridge.com; My YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/sbtmusic; My TwitterPage: www.twitter.com/sbtfly; My Facebook FanPage: www.facebook.com/pages/Saidah-Baba-Talibah/7753278133.

Meet the Designers... FRANCISCO AZUCAR’S passion for fashion started with just a sewing lesson from his Grandmother and Aunt at the age of 15. A combination of hands on experience, learning tricks of the trades with Supermodels and a traditional degree in Fashion Design created an everlasting fire of inspiration. For Azucar, fashion design is not a career but rather a way of life. His collection reflects the soul of an artist and desire to make people beautiful. Inspired by his worldwide travels and his everlasting love for fashion, Art Institute Graduate and founder of Piida Diida, DAVID BARNES, creates a fashion line that speaks elegance and precision. “…Ever since I picked up a pencil and designed my first suit, I became a fashion designer for the love of creating and executing my passion that was instilled in me since birth.,” says David. For David, fashion design is the road that was chosen for him. He has plans to take his line to the next level through strategic marketing and developing more creative collections.

Just from Caribbean Fashion Week in Jamaica this past June, MARVALYN NELSON of LaMaica Fashions www.myspace.com/LaMaicafashions, expresses her love for color and fashion in the latest from her collections. With an educational background and over 25 years of experience in Fashion Design, Marvalyn, brings a new flavor to the industry. Marvalyn currently designs women’s apparel as well as handbags. In the near future, Marvalyn plans to expand her line to resort wear in the Spring. Inspired by the infamous, Vera Wang, Jamaica W.I. born, JUDITH BARNES has created Judy’s Couture www.judysfashiondesigncouture.com that has really attracted a wide variety of women in South Florida. Fashion design is a life long passion of Judith. At the age of 9, she designed clothes for her Barbie Doll. Of course it didn’t end there. Years later, Judith decided to continue her path to the fashion world and leave her career in banking behind by obtaining her Degree in Fashion Design and Marketing. Judith has plans to expand her Couture House by creating a Ready to Wear, Wedding Gown Line in the near future.
