While most of us look at the new year as our opportunity for fresh beginnings and a time to get organized, for me it’s always been the start of fall and back-to-school. This year is especially bittersweet for me (and my husband) as we say goodbye to summer and all the amazing memories we created and watch our daughter enter her last year of high school.

As we look towards the milestones this next season will bring and help her plan for her future, organization and routine will be interspersed with those oncein-a-lifetime moments: college applications, grad dress shopping, and party planning. While the typical day-to-day schedule can’t be avoided, my bigger plan for this “last” school year is to cherish every moment of this part of her life while dreaming and planning for this next phase of ours. I feel a trip to Italy coming on! As I write this I’m reminded that Stimuli is just like our lives – filled with all the little things and moments that come together to create the way we live. Our homes, our families, our fun, and our communities, we share it all with you as we welcome you into our new home (see “Home Sweet Office” on page 12). We’re also sharing a new recipe to spice up your family meal (see “Fall for Cioppino” on page 30) and we’re showing you how to be cozy and stylish this fall with florals and knits (see “Fall Style 101” on page 20). Because life is supposed to be fun too, we’ve including some of our latest little obsessions from our local and online retailers (see page 6). This fall I hope you embrace the return to routine while taking in the special moments that make life interesting. The experiences, the time we spend with friends and family, and the utter contentment that comes from living the life you’re meant to live – with a little help from us!

HOW DO YOU TURN A DRAB SPACE INTO AN INSPIRATIONAL OFFICE? WITH A NEUTRAL PALETTE, A MIX OF OLD AND NEW, AND A TALENTED DECORATING DUO.

W

hen it was time for Stimuli to find a new home, the search took several months. With a specific location in mind, Editor-inChief, Maryanne Lechleiter, scoured the downtown core of Langley, B.C., until she found the perfect space for the growing team.

BEFORE

Not wanting to invest in extensive renovations, this just under 500 square foot, two room space was almost move-in ready, save for the dreary wall colour and less than welcoming windows. With a deadline looming and a tight budget, Maryanne called on the decorating team of Carrie Thachuk and Mark Braun from The Passionate Home. Tasked with transforming the dark rooms into a functional work space that was anything but a typical office, the duo relied on their knack for mixing old and new with big box buys and thrift store finds. “Maryanne had a few pieces of furniture from her previous space,” reflects Carrie. “We looked at what she already had and added pieces that were both functional and comfortable.” 14 14

FALL 2015 | stimuli magazine

One of the biggest challenges was creating a “kitchen” area within the main office space. “The open shelving does double duty,” says Mark. “It’s both a design element and functional storage for dishware and other necessities. By layering different objects together we were able to add texture to the space.”

$

The cabinet is a thrift store buy that got a new lease on life with a coat of Chalk Paint™ decorative paint by Annie Sloan.

“It was about giving our team a space that inspires creativity,” says Maryanne. “Carrie and Mark took my random Pinterest inspiration board and brought it to life. It’s so perfectly us.”

ARE YOUR TEETH AGING FASTER THAN YOU ARE? We have all heard it...fifty is the new forty! Sixty is the new fifty! And so on. Unfortunately, not true for the teeth. Teeth are wearing out at a record pace. Theories for the acceleration of enamel loss vary from stress and tooth grinding, bite collapse, braces with extractions and/or retraction, and airway issues, to name a few. Did you know that some of the most worn out teeth occur in people who snore? The prevalence of the deteriorating dentition has created new challenges for dental professionals. No longer are patients in their 50’s accepting of dark and worn teeth or eroding gum lines. Patients in their 60’s do not want to have dentures like their parents or grandparents had. People are feeling younger, and they want to look younger too. The appearance of the teeth is a big part of that desire. So what is being done to thwart this premature aging process? Firstly,

prevention. If your dentist has the proper training, the problem will be identified early and treated conservatively. However If the teeth have already worn out, then reconstructive procedures can be considered. A combination of natural looking porcelain crowns and veneers can easily regain a youthful appearance. Once again, training of the dentist is paramount. Before thousands of dollars are invested in a beautiful new set of teeth, the cause of the original deterioration must be identified and eliminated. Otherwise, the reconstruction is destined to fail. Call to make an appointment for a consultation to see what needs to be done to ensure you have healthy teeth for many years to come.

1

Choose a gourd or pumpkin and cut a hole large enough to plant fall annuals in. To prevent leaks when watering, insert a recycled vegetable tin or coffee can inside the hole. While this planter will only last about as long as a bouquet of flowers, it will make a huge statement on your holiday table. 24

2

The plant choices are endless — this planter includes ornamental peppers, pansies, a small mum and a tropical grasslike plant. Add in some additional texture with mini gourds. Simply drill a small hole in the bottom and use a bamboo skewer to stick into the arrangement.

Try thinking outside the pot this fall and use a gourd as a spectacular centerpiece for your holiday feast. The Apple Barn in Abbotsford grows a wide variety of heirloom pumpkins and funky gourds – it’s worth a visit. If you have children, they’ll love the fun activities offered during the harvest season.

3

Have fun building a variety of planters for placing around the house, both inside and out. Group several on the patio steps, hang crookneck gourd planters from a trellis or make mini ones as place card holders that can be gifted to your guests at the end of the evening. ISLAND

Vista'ďż˝ nt conte ional e n Addit li n o hotos a/ and p .c g a ulim at stim ring saltsp

Text & photos by Kristine Carrick

estled in the Southern Gulf N Islands, Salt Spring Island was the destination on my most recent

adventure. Born and raised in B.C. it was with some embarrassment that I admitted never having visited the island. I was surprised to learn that neither had 90 percent of British Columbians. One of the most populated islands, Salt Spring is a haven for artists, farmers, and those looking to simply slow down and dream from its many vistas. Our visit took place over a rainy, windy weekend and not to be deterred by the weather, we took in the views from two of the four provincial parks. Our drive up Mount Maxwell raised eyebrows as we trekked up steep grades in 26

the car — the views were even more stunning than I had imagined. It is the connection to agriculture that made this trip a standout; the 180 square kilometre island is abundant with roadside stands providing fruits, vegetables, eggs, and more. During our stop at Salt Spring Wild Cider, we learned there is more than 350 varieties of apples growing on the island. Our two night stay was not enough to acclimatize to the islander pace, but we were grateful to get a small taste — just enough to know we will be back for more. Salt Spring is certainly a destination that should be on your weekend adventure list. continued on page 28 FALL 2015 | stimuli magazine

Tips for your trip:

The Saturday market is a delight for the senses: artisans, flowers, local food and more.

The island is a feast for both beer and wine lovers.

Year ‘round destination. There are a number of great events on the calendar throughout the year. Try a few of the hundreds of apple varieties at the Salt Spring Island Apple Festival, Saturday, October 4. Or, celebrate the fall harvest at the Sip & Savour Salt Spring event, Friday to Sunday, October 9-11. See the Stimuli Magazine events calendar online, for details. 28

Getting there is not as expensive and difficult as you might think. Don’t let the BC Ferries website dissuade you. I called their customer service team who were very helpful. I was pleasantly surprised to discover it is less expensive to travel to Salt Spring direct than it is to go round-trip to Victoria. Accommodations. The island truly offers something for everyone. From hotels and motels, to B&B beach houses, cottages, cabins, and suites. Take a cooler and some cash. My biggest regret was not bringing a cooler to pack home all the perishable goodies we collected over the weekend. Remember to bring some smaller bills and change; honesty boxes only take cash and for the most part, exact change.

You simply pay for your selection through the honesty system.

Fall for

Cioppino 30

FALL 2015 | stimuli magazine

Cioppino [chuh•pee•noh] Serves 4

Cioppino — a hearty seafood stew — originated around the fishing docks of San Francisco, where Italian immigrant fishermen would cook up a rustic, spicy stew with the catch-of-the-day. A colourful story about the word “cioppino” tells the tale of cooks on the pier calling out to the fishermen to “chip in” their catch to the community stew pot; their heavily-accented shouts were mistaken for “Cioppino!”. Recipe & photos by Linda Horn

Ingredients 3 Tbsp olive oil 2 shallots, finely diced 4 cloves garlic, finely minced Large can of diced tomatoes 1/2 small can of tomato paste 1/2 Tbsp dried chili flakes 1 cup dry white wine (I used La Petite Paille Sauvignon Blanc from Kelowna, BC) 1 cup fish stock 1 dozen mussels, scrubbed, beards removed 1 dozen small clams 1 dozen prawns, shelled & deveined, but leave the tails on Small handful Italian parsley leaves, chopped Seafood and shellfish courtesy of 1 Fish 2 Fish Fresh Seafood Market in Langely

Method Heat olive oil over medium heat in a large stock pot that has a well-fitting lid. Sauté shallots and garlic until soft and fragrant. Add in diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and chili flakes. Stir and cook for about a minute. Add wine and stock. Simmer on low heat, covered for about 30 minutes. Turn the heat to medium-high, and add mussels and clams, and put the lid back on the pot. As soon as the shells have opened, add prawns and cook until pink, about a minute or two. Discard any shells that haven’t opened. Sprinkle with fresh, chopped Italian parsley. Serve with a rustic sourdough bread for dipping.

Here’s a wonderful idea! Next time you are having friends for dinner, why not ask them to “chip in” by bringing one of the seafood ingredients. Toss them all into the rich, spicy broth and you have an instantly fabulous dinner party that’s affordable for everyone! Serve with a crusty sourdough bread and a light red wine with great acidity such as Pinot Noir.

Enjoy!
