When I reflect back on the great moments in my life, those memories are connected to two things: family and summer. Our wedding day (20 years together this year), the birth of our daughter (she just turned 16), and bringing home our puppy (can’t believe he’s 10). Not to mention the fun of soaking up the sun on the beaches of Penticton, our annual family vacation to Canim Lake, and backyard BBQ’s with friends. What’s in store for my family this year? Our first trip to New York City. No wonder summer is my favourite season! Stimuli also has big plans this summer - we’re launching a brand new edition for our Chilliwack readers. The website is live now and the first print edition is scheduled for the fall. Visit us at stimulimag.ca/Chilliwack. This edition of Stimuli is all about soaking up the best of summer. You may have gathered that I spend a lot of time outside during these months; this year I’ll be packing my beach bag with the “Beach Beauty Basics” featured on page 18. I’ve also realized that wearing a dress makes my morning routine much easier (see “Get Dressed” on page 22), and there’s nothing better than an evening spent on the deck enjoying a refreshing beverage or two (see “Celebrate Summer” on page 30). Whether your summer will be spent enjoying a quiet stay-cation, or you’ve got some big plans like we do, I hope the pages of Stimuli inspire you to make the most of these few short months and create memories that last a lifetime. I’d love to hear what your summer plans are. Join the conversation: facebook.com/StimuliMagCanada Twitter: @StimuliMag Instagram: StimuliMag

When the homeowners of this typical suburban lot, tucked into the Brookswood area of Langley, B.C., needed to blend the practical necessity of a garden shed with the feminine dream of a romantic backyard oasis, the duo bantered back and forth until finally reaching a compromise. As a carpenter with Modern Edge Contracting, Bob had two goals for this project: to build a structure that would require very little maintenance, and to create an outdoor area that would give his wife, Anne,

A Sweet Compromise A suburban lot features a garden shed that is both quaint and practical. Photography by Darryl Bueckert Text by Maryanne Lechleiter 10

a space to enjoy tea parties with their grandchildren. Mission accomplished. While the interior of this compact 10’ x 12’ building is bare bones framing, the twosome chose fibre cement board for the exterior siding, achieving their low maintenance goal while creating a pretty spot to savour the sweeter things in life. The grey-on-grey colour scheme is the ideal backdrop to showcase Anne’s collection of vintage china, and the compact bistro table fits perfectly into the patio’s footprint. Both the patio pavers and the double doors are reclaimed items from a local building salvage yard, lending a bit of age to an otherwise brand new building. Complete with a simple black light fixture and white hanging planters, this collaboration shattered the definition of compromise in that neither party had to give up their vision for a beautiful backyard.

STEP INTO THE PARLOUR From the moment you walk through the doors of The Parlour you can feel the stress begin to melt away. Your body starts to relax and unwind, and the worries of the day fade into the background. You’ve entered a space where your health and well-being is all that matters. A family business for 20 years, mother and daughter team, Susan and Jena, spent two and a half years planning and constructing The Parlour’s new location tucked into the heart of Brookswood in South Langley. From the floor plan to the fixtures, and every minute detail in between, the comfort of their clients was foremost in their minds. During our tour we were impressed with the fact that there are three distinct areas: a stateof-the-art hair salon boasting over 500 different hair colour canisters, a separate wing for spa treatments, and the Men’s Den, a decidedly masculine space where men can get a traditional hot towel straightrazor shave, haircut, beard trim, or a quick grey hair blending treatment, all while watching their own personal TV. Separate from the other three wings of The Parlour is the social area. Complete with four pedicure chairs, manicure stations, and a makeup bar, this is where the fun happens; it has played host to many a girl’s night out and is also a prewedding preparation area. Trained in New York City, the team at The Parlour are able to handle groups of any size. For women, it’s all about the bathroom, and the changing areas of The Parlour are absolutely luxurious. With separate rooms for men and women, each feature heated floors, complimentary toiletries, and a telephone with a direct line to the front desk.

16 16

SUMMER 2014 | stimuli magazine

While The Parlour offers the luxury and professionalism you would expect to find only in a downtown spa, the rates are very reasonable. “We believe that day spa services should be something that everyone can enjoy,” says Susan. “We understand a family’s need to make every penny count, so when you visit The Parlour you will receive the best in luxurious service without the inflated price point.” Indeed, a 90 minute Paramount Facial that includes a 30 minute foot, back, neck and shoulder massage is only $115. With the hectic schedules that most of us now consider the norm, it is imperative that we take some time to just be still. Your visit to The Parlour will leave you with a renewed sense of well-being and energy.

Where the Blacktop Ends

Like a lyric from a country song, I think I left a piece of my heart behind during my most recent West Coast Wanderings adventure. Literally where the blacktop ends, you will find the town of Tofino, British Columbia — the most westerly point of the TransCanada Highway, this destination has been on my list for some time now. When I approached Tourism Tofino for some direction, my one caveat was the adventure needed to be dogfriendly. My canine companion, Deacon, loves the water and in his senior years it was important to me he be along for the ride. Located within the 400,000 hectares that make up Clayoquot Sound, Tofino is the picture of a west coast sea-side town. From foodies to surfers, Tofino’s tag line does not lie; you have to see it to believe it. 24

There are several options when traveling to the area, but they become more limited with our dog friends along for the journey. Catching an early ferry, we managed the drive in about three hours, stopping along the way to admire the misty wonder of Cathedral Grove, past Sprout and Kennedy lakes, and through the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. There are plenty of reasons to stop along the way and our canine companions appreciated the opportunity to stretch their legs. With glimpses of waves crashing on Long Beach, we continued past Long and Cox beaches to unload the car at Crystal Cove Beach Resort. Let me start by saying, the website doesn’t do it justice. Whether you are looking for a romantic weekend or a family getaway, this place fits the bill and they welcome fur-guests as well. We were fortunate to have a beach front cabin and enjoyed views of Mackenzie beach. Think of strolling with your morning coffee along the beach, while the dog romps around. Heaven. Tofino really does offer something for everyone. You can choose to do as little or as much as you would like. Get out on the water, take in one of the many trails, and explore the old growth forest; the sights, sounds, and smells are good for the soul. We were provided the opportunity to go bear watching with Ocean Outfitters Tofino Adventure Company. This is the one area of our adventure where the dogs were not included. We suited up and went out in a zodiac to see if we could spot a black bear or two. Our guide was excellent and we were fortunate to see two black bear while out on the water. They are magnificent; you could hear a pin drop as we sat quietly watching them forage for food along the water’s edge. While we were out on the water for two hours, I felt a little like my seven-year-old self when the guide said it was time to head back, “Aww, do we have too?!” Wind-blown and grinning like fools, my travel companion and I decided to find a bite to eat and settled at the picnic table in the yard of our cabin. The food choices in Tofino are many, with seafood being the highlight, it really doesn’t get more fresh and the local purveyors excel at their craft. Continued on page 27 stimulimag.ca | SUMMER 2014

With a Red Can Gourmet pizza box and a four-pack from Tofino Brewing Co., my heart sang as we sat listening to the sound of the ocean, admiring the view.

A Tofino classic: surfers and waves on Long Beach.

So much, and yet so little to do. Here are some tips for your next trip to this slice of west coast: • Give yourself time. You’ve already taken the ferry to get there and made the drive, take an extra day if you can — I promise you will not regret it. • Plan to do nothing. We wanted to see and do everything in two and half days. My suggestion is plan to just sit and relax. Take a book, let the dog roam, sit around the fire. • Care for your canine companion. We were travelling with senior dogs, who were good about being left on their own in the comfort and safety of our cabin. Be sure to check with your accommodation provider, as some may not allow dogs to be left alone, which means they will need to go with you and cannot be left waiting in the car for your bear watching tour to end. • Go where the locals go. We heard it a few times during our visit; on sunny days locals can be found enjoying a margarita on the patio at Sobo restaurant. So good, we went twice.
