Christmas is my favourite holiday. As a child, it was because of the excitement surrounding what was under the tree on Christmas morning. As I grew older and had a child of my own, the meaning changed. Now it is about family and friends gathering together, sharing laughter, remembering past celebrations, creating new memories, and honouring traditions that are being passed down through generations. I remember as a child, my grandmother made this amazingly detailed Dickens Village out of cereal boxes. I was fascinated by it and it wasn’t Christmas without it on her mantle. Sadly, the village is no longer intact, but thinking about it always puts a smile on my face and conjures up memories of happy times with an amazing lady whom I loved dearly. That is why, when it comes to traditions, there are a few nonnegotiable items on my list: the annual trip to Bright Nights in Stanley Park, setting up our (newer) Christmas village with my daughter, and making sure we choose a night to decorate the tree when all three of us are there to do it together. The memories that are created and bonds that are strengthened as we carry on with these special moments, are worth all the effort and stress it can take to coordinate schedules. When I reflect on past holiday seasons, it isn’t the gifts that I remember, it is the people I spent time with, and the memories that we made, that I truly cherish. As we rush headfirst into this busy holiday season, I encourage you to hit the pause button, take some time to honour your family’s traditions, and maybe create a new one of your own. From our Stimuli family to yours, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Maryanne Lechleiter Editor

T
he Langley, B.C. home of Darryl and Jodi Bueckert is a reflection, not only of their personal style, but of their approach to living intentionally. The transformation began by carefully considering how they wanted to use each space in their home to better understand how they could create an environment that best worked for their family. What started as a basic builder’s grade townhome has been transformed into a pared-down, serene space filled with light. Jodi’s approach to decorating for the holiday season is no different; “I am drawn to things that evoke feelings of peace and serenity.” By using simple, earthy elements interspersed with pops of colour and a little bit of sparkle, she has created a room that envelopes family and friends in warmth.
{
“Increase the impact of your design by grouping like items. Use a variety of textures, tones, and fabrics to add interest.”
}
To maintain the simplicity of her design, Jodi chose only a few items from La Belle Vie Home Décor to use in her vignettes, and combined those with pieces she already had. A selection of ornamental trees in a variety of sizes and textures are grouped on top of a vintage radio the couple inherited from Darryl’s grandparents. Twine wrapped balls are placed on a silver plate and set atop a re-upholstered vintage stool. Birch wrapped candles and vases are placed on smaller blocks of wood and arranged on the mantle. To cover the TV that is mounted above the fireplace, Jodi purchased an inexpensive art canvas, painted it the same colour as the wall, and glued on a few twigs collected in the garden. “Holiday decorating doesn’t mean you need to change your style,” emphasizes Jodi. “Like your home, it should be designed intentionally to fit into your space and create a sense of comfort and joy.” To see more of Darryl and Jodi’s inspiring holiday decor, visit our website at stimulimag.ca/peaceon-earth.

L
ove is woven into the very fabric of Dena’s Boutique. It was love that drew Dena from her downtown city-gal life to the Fraser Valley. That same love sparked the idea to open a clothing boutique, and it was Dena’s love for fashion, coupled with her passion for helping women feel confident in themselves, that has made the boutique a success. Dedicated to building personal relationships with their customers, Dena and her staff assist each woman in finding pieces that reflect their individuality. “I believe that clothes make a difference. What a woman wears has an impact on how she feels about herself, and on how others respond to her. When a woman feels good she is confident and exudes a certain spark that lights up a room,” says Dena. “We offer our customers ways to take comfortable risks and stretch their style boundaries, all while building their self-confidence so they can embrace all that life has to offer.” Not your daughter’s store, Dena’s Boutique specializes in dressing women from head to toe for every occasion. Whether you’re looking for everyday wear, something for that special occasion, or for resort wear, you’ll find what you’re looking for — and maybe even something you didn’t know you wanted. Inspired by evolving trends, art, and music, their uniquely eclectic mix of designers includes Sympli, Lauren Vidal, Rock N’ Karma, Angels Never Die, Joseph Ribkoff, Komarov Occasion Wear Dresses, and Desigual.

The new shoe boutique includes droolworthy styles from Miz Mooz, Mam’zelle, France Mode, Rockwell Tharp, and Vince Camuto. “Our style is classic with a twist,” says Dena. “We look for designs that have a timeless quality to them, but feature something just a little unexpected.” Not to be forgotten is their amazing selection of jewellery from Tanis Designs, Myka, Liquid Metal, and Lucy the First, as well as handbags from Matt & Nat, Deux Lux, and Raviani. One thing is certain, Dena and her team have created something special in Walnut Grove’s first women’s clothing boutique. Whether you love to shop, or dread the dressing room, the friendly, welcoming atmosphere will relax you and you’ll walk out of the shop feeling confident in your style.

Cheddar Pinecones Recipe & Photo by Linda Horn
W
ow your guests and amaze your family with these to-die-for cheese pinecones! They are ridiculously easy to make, yet look like you spent hours creating the fanciest of appetizer plates. Take one of these to a cocktail party and people will be seriously impressed with your culinary skills. With the addition of aged cheddar, the flavour is elegant and elevated above the ubiquitous nut-encrusted log. Serve the spread at room temperature with plenty of crackers or baguette slices. My wine pairing suggestion is a fullbodied red, containing Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc, such B路S Red Table Wine from Summerland, BC. Bon appetit!

Cheddar pinecone spread Makes 2 Pinecones Ingredients
2 packages cream cheese 1 container MacLaren’s Imperial Sharp Cold Pack Cheddar Cheese Product 1 container Balderson’s 3 Yr Old Aged Cheddar Cheese Spread 1 Tablespoon finely diced shallots 1 Tablespoon finely diced red pepper 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce Juice from 1/2 a lemon 2 cups natural almonds 1 bunch fresh rosemary for garnish
Directions
Using your hands, mold the cheese mixture into two pinecone shapes and place on a decorative plate. No need to be perfect! Cover cheese with layers of almonds, starting at the small end of the “cone”, and working in layers towards the wide end of the “cone”. Garnish with rosemary branches. Serve at room temperature with plenty of crackers or baguette slices, and a nice red wine.
Allow all of the cheese to come to room temperature. Pre-heat oven to 350° F. Spread almonds on a baking sheet and toast for about 15 minutes. Allow to cool completely. In a large bowl, mix together all ingredients, except almonds, until well blended. Refrigerate for 2 hours until firm.
B·S Red Table Wine, from Summerland, BC, is blended from Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Petit Verdot grapes, making a well-rounded red to perfectly accompany your cheese spread. Read more about Summerland, BC on page 28.

winter 2013 | stimuli magazine
iT hAs TAKeN Me UNTiL NoVeMBer to realize those hot, patio-enjoying days of summer aren’t coming back any time soon. Denial, pure and simple; its cure — a wintery wine getaway. Fellow Stimuli Magazine by Kristine Carrick contributor and wine @KristineCarrick lover, Linda, was my companion for my most recent wandering up the Coquihalla Highway to visit Bottleneck Drive — an aptly named route of Summerland wineries. Most think of the summer months as the key time to visit one of the 214 plus, grape wineries in British Columbia, but the fall and winter months can be just as interesting. One winery, Okanagan Crush Pad (OCP) — a custom crush winery and home to brands Haywire and Bartier Scholefield wines, took time to welcome Linda and I where we were treated to some one-on-one time with Christine Coletta, OCP’s co-owner. Christine’s time in the industry goes back long before OCP’s young two-years. She is the former executive director of the BC Wine Institute and a key player in B.C. VQA (Vintners Quality Alliance) labelling that many of our readers will recognize. OCP’s vision for the wine they want to produce is clear, “we want to create wines that consumers can embrace and really enjoy.” OCP’s focus on natural wine making was evident as we toured and chatted with Christine, chief wine maker Michael Bartier, and associate wine maker Matt Dumayne. I found their approach to the industry, from growing and harvesting, to production methods, fascinating. While they produce their own award-winning labels, they also provide the facilities (hence the crush pad name) for other wineries to get started. Labels to check out from their class of 2013 include Harper’s Trail, Jentsch Cellars, and Sage Hills. Sadly, this edition of WCW is not long enough to share more of their wine making ways. Let’s just say that should you find time to visit, they will make you feel welcome. OCP’s tasting room is currently closed for the season, but they will be hosting guests the weekend of November 30th and December 1st for the third annual Light Up the Vines, an adult-themed wintery wine weekend where wineries on the Drive will open their doors to guests allowing them to stock up for the holidays. A brilliant idea if you were to ask Linda or me. WiNTerY WiNe GeTAWAYs To pUT oN YoUr CALeNDAr: • Summerland’s 26th festival of lights Friday, November 29, 2013.
