Welcome to the inaugural Children’s Book Festival smallprint. Stirling Libraries Children’s Book Festival smallprint will appeal to children of all ages and tastes and includes both a free Open Programme of events along with our Schools Programme. smallprint offers a variety of events for children including the return of some of our favourites Chae Strathie and Angela Proctor. We are excited to have Cbeebies Olobob creator Leigh Hodgkinson with us at Balfron and Bannockburn Libraries.

Witches and wizards are not left out and we have one of the ever popular Harry Potter party events as well as a special witchy and wizardy craft event with author Elizabeth Ezra. Dressing up is optional for these events but there will be a prize for the best dressed! Writing and publishing will be highlighted with special events by Lari Don in Cambusbarron, Chani McBain in Doune and Metaphrog partnership in Cowie. Our grand finale is a puppet show by Clydebuilt Puppets, The Three Giants on the Sunday. For younger children, there are free Bookbug Sessions included in the programme.
For our schools programme we are pleased to have Bookbug Prize runner up and winner, Morag Hood and Alan Windram respectively, reading from their prize-winning picture books as well as a visit to Riverside Primary from Gaelic author, Morag Anne McNeil. We hope smallprint will become one of the many cultural events that make Stirling unique. We look forward to seeing you at our events in local libraries where staff are ready to welcome you. Age 8-11 Tickets Free Award-winning graphic novelists Metaphrog (Sandra Marrs and John Chalmers) will reveal some of the secrets of making comics and inspire you to create your own. An opportunity to take part in a workshop and talk based on their fairy tale graphic novel adaptations The Red Shoes and Other Tales and The Little Mermaid. Get tips on character design and storytelling and have a go yourselves. @metaphrog

Doune Library 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm Age 9-11 Tickets Free Join Chani McBain for a workshop looking at the marketing and publishing of a book. You may have the chance to design your own book jacket! Chani was brought up in Renfrewshire and now lives in her adopted city of Edinburgh with her husband, daughter and Smudge the cat. Chani has worked in Scottish publishing for more than 10 years, focusing on sales and marketing. She is the author of two picture books, Ginger Nut (inspired by life as a redhead) and There’s No Such Thing as Nessie! @the_ginger_nut

Balfron Library 10:30 am – 11:30 am Age 3-7 Tickets Free Olobob Top is a CBeebies animated TV show about the adventures of Tib, Lalloo and Bobble who live in a huge forest with their friends. Their world is made of lots of colours, patterns and shapes. Each story sees them head to the Olobob Top where they use these shapes to build new characters, who then come to life and join them in their adventures. 11:00 am – 12:00 Noon Age 9+ Tickets Free Antarctica and the South Pole have been visited by great explorers and continue to attract scientists making new discoveries today. We will bring to life the history and science of this continent through the words and images of past and present explorers. Get set for heroic tales of the ice and the abundant life found there. Bannockburn Library 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm Age 3-7 Tickets Free Join one small book lover’s quest to find the perfect snuggle-up-andlose-yourself-in-a-book place in this playful celebration of sharing books and reading. Come and listen to Leigh Hodgkinson read her picture book about books. There will also be big drawing and a chance to create your own perfect reading chair! Leigh Hodgkinson is an animation director, illustrator and author. Her films include Moo(n) for Channel 4 and Stalk for Film London. Her awards include a BAFTA (for CBBC Newsround On Poverty) and Annecy
Crystal (for Channel 4 comedy Fonejacker). She was also the art director for the first series of Charlie & Lola. Leigh has written and illustrated 11 books, and illustrated many more. Leigh is co-creator and art director of Cbeebies animated pre-school series Olobob Top which she makes with her co-creator husband, director/ producer Steve Smith. They have made 2 series to date. Kate will share some of her hot tips on dragon drawing and introduce you to some of her amazing creature creations. Leading Scottish puppet theatre Clydebuilt present The Three Giants, a show for family audiences with lifesized body puppets. The hero of the story is Finn MaCool, the biggest and strongest giant in the whole of Ireland. In Scotland at this time lived another giant called
McGonigle, a great big burly fellow who heard the fame of the Irish heroes and crossed the sea to do battle. Can Finn MaCool defeat the McGonigle with the help of his clever wife Oonagh? Prepare for a great comic battle of trickery and timing. The Three Giants performance lasts thirty minutes but is followed by a chance to meet the puppets and puppeteers and to make your own puppet character in a workshop.

Thumble Tumble the extraordinary witch with Angela Proctor Mayfield Centre, St Ninians Library (Invited audience only) Angela writes fairy tale adventures for children about a little witch from the magical Isle of Arran called Thumble Tumble. The eight-book series follows Thumble Tumble’s adventures as she battles against an evil Night Witch called Mogdred to restore the balance of good and evil. Angela became involved in writing after having her children, she has been telling stories to them all of
their lives and in 2014 decided to turn their stories into books. Since publishing her first book she found she had a passion for writing and storytelling. Angela has visited over 70 schools across Scotland spreading the word about Thumble Tumble and converting thousands of children into ‘Arranites’ on the way. @ah_proctor

Morag Hood
Dunblane Library (Invited audience only) Morag Hood is an author and illustrator of picture books from Edinburgh. Her first book ‘Colin and Lee, Carrot and Pea’ won the UKLA (UK Literacy Award) and ‘I Am Bat’ was shortlisted for the Bookbug Picture Book Prize 2019. Morag loves making up stories, print-making and cutting and sticking. Her favourite things to draw are eyebrows. Come and hear what it is like to be a picture book author and illustrator.
