Saint Apollonia, Patroness of Dentistry Since the early middle ages, the legend of Saint Apollonia has been regarded by the Roman Catholic Church as a source of comfort and alleviation for sufferers of toothache. During the eighteenth century, the patronage of this Saint was extended to the dental profession. For example, the “toothbreakers” of Turin always carried out their extractions “con adjute di Sancta Apollonia.” The main source of the historical background to the legend is a letter written by Bishop Dionysius of Alexandria describing the persecutions of the Christians in that city in the year A.D. 249. The bishop makes a special reference to the behavior of the virgin Apollonia who refused to renounce her faith at the order of the magistrate. For this defiance, her teeth were knocked out, her jaws were broken, and she was threatened finally with the stake. Apollonia appeared to consent, but as soon as she was released from her chains, she cast herself into flames to die a martyr’s death. The Roman Martyrology records February 9, her birth anniversary as her feastday.

Prayer to St. Apollonia O glorious St. Apollonia, patron saint of dentisty and refuge to all those suffering from diseases of the tooth, I consecrate myself to thee, beseeching thee to number me among thy clients. Assist me by your intercession with God in my daily work and intercede with Him to obtain for me a happy death. Pray that my heart like thine may be inflamed with the love of Jesus and Mary, through Christ our Lord. Amen. O my God bring me safe through temptation and strengthen me as thou didst our own patroness, Apollonia through Christ our Lord. Amen. Anonymous

Dentist Creed To respect my profession, my reputation and myself, to be honest and fair with patients as I expect my patients to be honest and fair with me, to think of dentistry with loyalty, speak of it with the praise and act always as a custodian of its good name. To be a an whose word carries weight with my fellow citizens, to be a booster, not a knocker, pusher not a kicker, motor not a clog. To base my expectation of reward on a solid foundation of service rendered, to be willing to pay the price in honest efforts. To look upon my work as an opportunity to be seized with joy and make the most of it and not as painful drudgery to be reluctantly endured. To remember all the success lies within myself, in my own reign, my own ambition, my own courage and determination. To expect difficulties and force my way through them, to convert hard experience into capital or future struggles. To believe in my proposition with heart and soul, to carry an air of optimism into the presence of possible patients, dispell ill temper with cheerfulness, kill doubts with full convictions, and reduce active friction with an agreeable personality. To make a study of the professional and business sides in every detail from the ground up, to mix brains with my efforts, and use system and method in my work, to find time to do everything needful by never letting time find me doing nothing. To make every hour bring me dividends in fees, increased knowledge, and healthful recreation. To save money as well as earn I, to cut out expensive amusements until I can afford them. Finally to take a good trip on the joy of life, to play the game like a gentleman, to fight against nothing so hard as my own weakness, and to endeavor to grow as a dentist and as a man with passage of time. This is my Creed.

Lecturer’s Profile Pre-prosthetic Surgery for the General Practitioners

The Whys and How of Pulp Therapy in Pediatric Dentistry

Joy S. Bautista, DMD, MHPEd

Maria Margarita Regudo-Almoro,

Patients who are partially or completely edentulous will have esthetic and biomechanical concerns that need to be addressed before the prostheses can be fabricated. The goal of pre-prosthetic surgery is to address these concerns in order to facilitate the placement of a functional and esthetically acceptable prosthesis. Immediate and late consequences of edentulism require a careful evaluation of the intraoral supporting structures in order to provide proper rehabilitation and to minimize the ongoing process of bone loss. Irregular alveolar ridges, undercuts, tori, large maxillary tuberosities, shallow vestibules, hypertrophic frenum and fibrous hyperplasia are some of the problems that can interfere with dental prosthetic rehabilitation. With sufficient knowledge of anatomy of the area, familiarization of the procedure and proper skill, these cases can be safely executed in the convenience of their own clinics.

DMD, MScD Despite modern advances in preventive dentistry and use of anticipatory guidance to assist families in preventing of dental caries, many primary teeth are still lost prematurely. In preventing the premature loss of primary teeth, there are several pulp therapy options to choose from with the primary objective of maintaining the integrity and health of oral tissues. It will be presented that the key to a successful pulp therapy starts with correct diagnosis plus a thorough clinical and radiographic examination coupled with a good clinical technique. This lecture aims to assist the dental practitioner to better serve children and adolescents in saving primary teeth from premature extraction due to caries.  Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) University of the Philippines College of Dentistry, Manila, Philippines  Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Pediatric Dentistry (C.A.G.S.) Lecturer’s Profile Enhance Esthetics with Shade Build Up

TADS MADE IT EASY!

Ma. Concepcion Escano-Parrenas,

Delfin Abadco, DMD

DMD, MscD

Finding the right shade is one of the most difficult decisions you have to make through your dental restoration. Philippine economics has made it almost impossible to have 10-15 shades of composite in 1 restoration. This lecture aims to show a simplified technique for an anterior build up. An onsite demo will follow the technique discussed in the lecture.

Mini-screw implants, often referred to as temporary anchorage device ( TADs). It is a device that is temporarily fixed to bone for the purpose of strengthening orthodontic anchorage which is subsequently removed after use. Their attachment in bone is mechanical with no intent to establish any form of osseointegration The scope of orthodontics is expanding. TADs have allowed the Orthodontists to overcome anchorage limitation ,to perform difficult tooth movements with minimal patient compliance at a faster time. It must be positioned precisely relative to tooth roots, soft tissue and available bone. Lastly, a precise diagnosis, proper instrumentation and laboratory exams must be performed to the patient before putting screw as well as the competency and expertise of the licensed professional orthodontist are highly required.
