In 1986, an ad agency hired a little-known talent who would become the voice of one of the simplest, yet effective, marketing campaigns in hotel history. Motel 6’s “We’ll leave the light on for you” campaign, known for its catchy tune and the distinct voice and ad-libbing talent of Tom Bodett, reassured you that they would do what they say. Why did such a simple slogan resonate so deeply, not only with the hotel’s demographic but also with most people who heard it? Having someone “leave the light on for you” sends a heartfelt message that someone you care about knows you’re coming, and that they are genuinely looking forward to having you. I would be remiss in failing to note that 2020 was indeed a unique year. For one, we discovered that our world as we know it can be rocked in an entirely new way. We feared the unknown and
grasped tightly to the known. Many learned that they could effectively operate businesses from places they love and with people they love. The peacefulness of the beach became a welcome escape from many of the year’s uncertainties. The common message heard from Members among the staff was, “If we have to quarantine, we decided to do it at the beach!” Before long, that message became, “We decided to stay.” Thank you, on behalf of management team and staff of The Clubs by JOE, for choosing to come home to your Club time and time again. While you won’t hear Tom Bodett’s voice in and around the Club, you will hear the voices of Tommy, Chris, Andy, Martin and FJ — among many other impassioned team members — letting you know that you were missed and that your arrival was anticipated with zest. At The Clubs by JOE, our proverbial “light” may be manicured greens and a shiny cart, fresh grouper waiting to be seared, or a perfectly positioned beach chair and umbrella — but the sentiment is the same. We’ll leave the light on for you every time.

LUNCH By the time midday rolls around, everyone will probably be ready to get out of the sun and grab a bite at one of the Beach Club’s two dining venues. 30°86°, the Club’s original eatery, has served up classic coastal favorites for years. If the family prefers flavors from south of the border, Costa Chica Tacos & Treats is the way to go. And with several large TVs, it has become a gameday favorite for every sports fan in the family. The kids, and the young at heart, won’t be able to resist finishing the meal with one of Costa Chica’s signature giant ice cream cookie sandwiches!
AFTERNOON With beach time and lunch checked off your itinerary, the choices at WaterSound Beach Club cater to everyone’s tastes. Surely the kids will want to grab a tube and float on the lazy river’s tranquil waters, which will offer mom and dad the perfect opportunity to get some shade under an umbrella placed between two well-positioned poolside lounge chairs. For those looking to burn off some of those lunchtime calories, this would be the time to hit the basketball or tennis courts — maybe even getting in a tennis lesson to sharpen those backhand skills.

EVENING As day turns to night, you might discover that there’s no reason to leave the Beach Club. The Sunset Bar at 30°86° provides one of the coast’s most Instagram-worthy spots for taking in a beach sunset. Of course, putting your feet back in the sand will also give you an ideal vantage point of the colorful sky while the kids enjoy one last splash in the calm Gulf waters. Chef Preetam and his team create unique dinner features on most nights, and dinner will provide an opportunity for you to visit whichever dining venue you passed up for lunch. Be aware of the Club’s event schedule because you might find yourself competing in a trivia or bingo night, or listening to live music and watching the kids dance the night away. WaterSound Beach Club offers such a variety of memory-making opportunities that it can be tough to choose how to spend your day from morning to night. Rest assured that the staff will be there day after day to welcome your family back to enjoy all that makes the Club special for you.

The beauty of South Walton is unparalleled, and one of the best ways to experience it is on foot or from the seat of a bicycle. Did you know more than 40% of South Walton’s nature is protected? Extensive trail systems cut through forests, leading to cypress domes, coastal dune lakes and the Choctawhatchee Bay. Scenic Highway 30A’s Timpoochee Trail, named after an influential Euchee Indian Chief, (and commonly known as the 30A bike path) stretches for approximately 19 miles and runs parallel to the full length of Scenic Highway 30A. The paved path meanders through famed beach towns and crosses rare coastal dune lakes, providing glimpses of dunes and the Gulf of Mexico beyond their outfalls. For countless families, the thin string of pines bordering the southern edge of Western Lake is one of South Walton’s most iconic views. Standing on the pedestrian bridge that crosses Western Lake, watching the sunset paint the sky in bold strokes of pink, orange, purple and red, with the Gulf breeze rippling across the lake, rustling
the palmettos that border the trail — it’s an experience like none other. This area of the Timpoochee Trail connects to the Grayton Beach Hike and Bike Trail, which offers a 1-mile or 9-mile loop through the northern section of Grayton Beach State Park. On the opposite side of Western Lake from the state park is the WaterColor® community. Here you’ll find the breathtaking beauty of Cerulean Park and a series of nature trails that wrap around the edge of the lake before twisting back through the community to connect to Scenic 30A’s Timpoochee Trail. Several thoughtfully designed pavilions and bridges offer unforgettable views of the lake’s dark blue waters, water lilies, black needlerush and cordgrass. A little farther east down Scenic 30A, hikers can access the popular Eastern Lake Trail system from a Point Washington State Forest trailhead on County Road 395. This state forest encompasses more than 15,000 acres. There are three trails of varying difficulty (3.5-mile, 6-mile and 11-mile) that slice through the flat Point
Washington State Forest. Hikers will traverse longleaf pine flatwoods, sand hill ecosystems, and cypress swamps, home to several rare species like the gopher tortoise, flatwoods salamander and the lovely American kestrel. North of Highway 98 near the Eastern Lake Trail Head is Eden Gardens State Park. An entry fee per bike or car is required to enter, but the small fee is worth it. The Wesley Homestead takes center stage at Eden, but the surrounding nature trails that cut through the 163-acres of state land are not to be missed. Secluded picnic tables offer serene views of Tucker Bayou, while the sand trails are shadowed by towering oaks and thick pine forests. And, fun fact, when the Wesley Homestead is open for tours, you may view the second largest collection of Louis XVI antique furniture in the country. If you prefer the ease of hiking close to home, the Watersound Origins® community boasts miles of paved paths (and a few gravel trails) that provide connectivity within the neighborhood and to the rest of the area’s trail system.

Cyclists can access the Timpoochee Trail safely by utilizing the paved trail along Watersound Parkway. Neighboring communities provide paved paths and views of the Gulf of Mexico and noted architecture. “The thing that makes our local trail system so unique is the diversity and interconnectivity of the various trail networks,” said J.T. Tollett Founder and President of 30A Trails, a local nonprofit working to promote and preserve the local trails. “On any given day, you can be secluded on dirt trails through wildlife-rich pine forests or on smooth paved paths that traverse the unique towns of Scenic Highway 30A. As a resident in the Watersound Origins community, I love that I can hop on my bike, follow the path along Watersound Parkway and in minutes connect to the Timpoochee Trail along 30A. From there, my options are endless. I can head to the beach or easily explore the vast trail networks in the state forests and parks. The possibilities to explore are limitless.” For a more secluded adventure, cyclists and hikers may look east of Lake Powell to discover the Panama City Beach Conservation Park. This park is relatively new and offers 12 trail options to explore amid its vast 2,900 acres of forest. The marked trails vary in length from a 1.7-mile green trail to an 11.2-mile red trail. Dotting the forest are cypress domes, ponds and several boardwalks. A trailhead provides restrooms and additional parking. Whichever adventure you prefer, a bike ride close to home, a day spent hiking through forests, or a quick jaunt down a sandy path to catch the sunset, South Walton and neighboring Panama City Beach have it all. Grab a water bottle and get out there and make your own adventure. For more information on the 30A Trails organization, visit 30Atrails.com.

A bird’s eye view gives you a look at the freshwater outfall from Western Lake as it flows into the Gulf of Mexico. At right, Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance director Alison McDowell.
WHEN ALISON MCDOWELL started doing field work for her environmental science class in college, she knew she found what she was meant to do. Through volunteering for the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance of Northwest Florida State College (CBA), McDowell was able to monitor the very waters in which she grew up fishing, swimming and boating in Okaloosa and Walton counties. In 2007, she accepted a role as the organization’s marine scientist and director. “It’s my goal to help endorse the CBA’s mission of promoting swimmable, fishable waterways now and for future generations,” said McDowell. “We’re here to provide education and experiences to empower everyone to take action in their everyday life and become active participants in local water stewardship.” CBA, an entirely grant-, donor- and contractfunded nonprofit organization, began in 1996
as members of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, local and state level environmental protection agencies and the business community collaborated to identify methods of sustainable ecosystem development. Today, the CBA is responsible for a network of “citizen scientists” who help monitor and restore Choctawhatchee waters through various recycling and research programs. One of the organization’s biggest initiatives, said McDowell, is that of “Living Shorelines,” a nationwide movement that replaces harmful seawalls with structures utilizing live plants, recycled and fossilized oyster shell and other natural structures to reduce property erosion. “Living shorelines are healthier alternatives to hardened shorelines, like seawalls and bulkheads, which can be harmful to the environment as they cut off the intertidal zone and can potentially lead to the erosion of adjacent properties” said McDowell. “By creating oyster reef breakwaters, we help slow down and reverse shoreline erosion while also providing a habitat for oyster settlement.” According to McDowell, just one adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water per day while contributing to a structure that serves as a feeding and hiding habitat for an assortment of juvenile creatures. Native vegetation is planted behind the oyster reef breakwaters to help hold down sediments, filter stormwater as it comes over land and provide refuge for fauna, such as snails and wading birds. Third and fifth graders are responsible for nurturing seagrass throughout the year, then embark on planting field trips. “The St. Joe Community Foundation has also helped us extend our education programs through their funding of SHOALS: Students Helping Oysters and Living Shorelines,” said McDowell. “We teach students about oysters, oyster gardening and aquaculture by providing cages with clean shells for them to hang under docks. Once live oysters settle, students monitor their growth, rid them of barnacles and, at the end of the year, move their mature oysters to permanent residence at our oyster reefs.” The foundation of these reefs are also supported through a CBA recycling initiative termed OYSTER: Offer Your Shell to Enhance Restoration. shucked shells, which otherwise would have been tossed in a landfill. McDowell estimates that, by the end of 2020, the CBA will have recycled over 100 tons of oyster shells to serve as the building blocks of reef sites. “One of the easiest ways for people to get involved is through water monitoring, which is sort of the bread and butter of what we do,” McDowell said. “We’re a part of the University of Florida’s Florida LAKEWATCH program, recording data from over 130 stations in our watershed. Our trained volunteers, who we call citizen scientists, simply adopt a body of water and venture out each month to collect water quality data and samples.” McDowell said these samples are then sent to UF labs for analysis, providing the University with long-term, baseline data sets for the coastal dune lakes, bay, river and tributary creeks that flow into the Choctawhatchee. Future studies may help identify help identify areas of poor water condition, identify possible causes of water degradation, and pinpoint solutions to improve water quality. This water quality is important in the area’s rare coastal dune lakes — a rare phenomena where bodies of freshwater sit mere feet from the Gulf of Mexico. Two of The Clubs by Joe’s properties border these coastal dune lakes, making them an important resource for Members.

the process of transitioning and figuring out how to execute oyster reef building postpandemic. But planting days will soon be upon them in Walton County, and the CBA is in the process of constructing virtual curriculum to reach students both inside of the classroom and out. “A lot of what we do is hands-on,” said McDowell. “We’re a boots-on-theground, hands-in-the-mud organization, and we like to be able to point to improved sustainment in our basin and be able to say we played a part. “We have a project in Live Oak Point, the largest salt marsh in the Choctawhatchee Bay, that we did a Living Shoreline project on in 2011 — and it’s flourishing. We’ve built back shoreline, there’s grasses growing and birds thriving. We have kids now that have been through Grasses in Classes and now find themselves in our high school SHOALS program, so they’re growing up with us. We’ve changed people’s perception of how important it is to take care of our waterways and, for us, that’s satisfying.”

FOOD, FUN, MUSIC, ESCAPISM St. Joe Company, Minto Communities building project of municipal proportions BY STEVE BORNHOFT
AFTER SUCCESSFULLY UNDERTAKING the development of agerestricted, active-adult communities in Daytona Beach and Hilton Head, South Carolina, the master builder Minto Communities USA commenced looking around for its next large-scale opportunity. “We have learned that there are four or five elements that every successful active-adult community must have,” said Bill Bullock, a Minto division president. Enumerating them, Bullock touched upon the need for sufficient land, proximity to an airport, a coastal location, convenient retail and service businesses, and a nearby medical facility. Inevitably, one might suppose, Minto found itself sizing up the vast land holdings of the St. Joe Company, now headquartered in Panama City Beach, and especially its real estate along ı5 miles of the Intracoastal Waterway close to the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport. Minto approached St. Joe with an interest in buying some dirt, but a relationship that might have been transactional became a partnership instead. Today, the parties are united in a joint venture — the third Latitude Margaritaville community in the United States — a project of a scope so large it is not easily comprehended. The hook-up represented a merging of like visions. St. Joe had been considering an active-adult component as part of its Bay County plans for more than ı0 years. “They had the land asset teed up, they had done their strategic research and believed in the concept,” Bullock said. “And we already had grabbed a tiger by the tail in teaming up with Margaritaville Holdings.” Margaritaville Holdings, in which the beachy balladeer Jimmy Buffett has an ownership interest, is the brand licensee and brand steward for what will be known as Latitude Margaritaville Watersound, currently in development on ı00,000 acres north of Panama City Beach and west of State 79. The project’s first phase will encompass 3,500 homes, most all of them ranging in price from

the low $200s to about $450,000, on 50-foot and 60-foot lots. Homes will range in size from approximately 1,200 to 2,400 square feet. To date, Minto has not sold any lots to other builders on its Latitude platform, and it has no plans to do so at this time. The notion of Margaritaville resonates well, Bullock said, with people seeking lives of “food, fun, music and escapism” — the lifestyle embraced by the brand — and old enough to remember the prominence of “sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll” as a motto. “To engage with a partner like St. Joe, which is so fully in sync with
our long-term vision for Latitude Margaritaville Watersound really was a perfect alignment,” Bullock said. “We have always said that we make money with our partners, not off our partners.” A sales center is under construction and will open next spring, Bullock projected, but not before model homes are ready for inspection. Minto started clearing land for its first production lots in June. Customers will be able to buy a house at the development’s grand opening and can expect construction to begin immediately. “It’s a massive undertaking when you are talking about laying the
groundwork for a city that, based on plat approvals, will include upwards of 170,000 houses when it is built out,” Bullock said. “It doesn’t happen overnight.” The Paradise Club provides subscribers with monthly updates on the Daytona Beach, Hilton Head and now Watersound projects (see LatitudeMargaritaville.com). Among 400,000 club members, 20,000 have expressed interest specifically in Watersound. “That’s pretty eye-opening, to have that level of interest at this stage,” Bullock said. “At Daytona, we’re in our third year of home sales. Bullock said residents of Latitude Margaritaville developments readily find common ground. “It isn’t about how much you paid for your house; it’s about a whole bunch of people having a great time and forming some of the best friendships they have ever had,” Bullock said. “I’m stunned at some of the prices paid for properties along the Emerald Coast, but that’s not the market we’re after. GROUPER
Preetam Pardeshi, executive chef of WaterSound Beach Club, shares the recipe and inspiration for the Club’s hottest dish. BY ABIGAIL ABESAMIS DEMAREST
YOU CAN FIND GROUPER on almost every menu on 30A, but chef Preetam Pardeshi has come up with something truly unique for Club Members to enjoy. The dish is blackened grouper with wilted baby spinach and Parmesan risotto, topped with blue crab and lemon beurre blanc. Is your mouth watering yet? Chef Preetam explained that the dish features Italian influences, drawing upon his experience working in a fine dining Italian restaurant under his mentor, Giovanni Parella. “At that time it was a pasta and seafood restaurant, so we used to pair different items with risotto,” he said. His grouper dish for 30°86° at WaterSound Beach Club is a twist on a recipe he’s been playing around with since 2006. He’s swapped out the ricotta cheese in the risotto and creamed spinach for aged Parmigiano-Reggiano and spinach sautéed with garlic and olive oil. The resulting dish is much lighter and packed with flavor. It’s topped with lemon beurre blanc, which melds the flavors of the grouper, spinach and risotto together, and blue crab — a 30A favorite for crab cakes. “We use the same crab meat as a topping to add to the seafood variety in the dish,” chef Preetam said. “I’ve gotten great feedback from our Members since I’ve started putting the dish on the new 30°86° menu,” chef Preetam said. “We’ve kept it on there because guests tell us they will make a special trip to the Beach Club just to eat that dish. On a recent weekend, we had around 35 to 40 orders (of grouper) a night.” He noted that the grouper dish is here to stay and will continue to be a 30°86° dinner feature. For anyone cooking up this dish at home, chef Preetam recommends substituting grouper with any white fish if you’re unable to find it at your local grocery store. You can also go big and throw grilled lobster on top instead of blue crab.

MEMBERS WHO HAVE RETURNED to Camp Creek Golf Club for a round of golf since its reopening in November have seen a noticeable difference in the course. In fact, there is a remarkable difference as a result of a seven-month renovation program. Now, after nearly 20 years, previous El Toro Zoysia and Bermuda grasses are nowhere to be seen; they’ve been replaced with a state-ofthe-art grass, Platinum TE™, also known as Platinum Paspalum. Recent course upgrades go far beyond the playing surface, however. According to Ryan Mulvey, General Manager of Golf Operations for The Clubs by JOE, over 95 acres of the new grass have been installed on the course. “Our Members and their guests have found that the new grass presents a much better platform on which to play because the grass can be mowed down to one-eighth of an inch, which reduces stickiness that is common in

other grasses,” said Mulvey. Many turf experts say that it is perfectly suited for excellent ball setup and play, and Members have agreed. What has long been considered one of the top golf courses on the Gulf Coast now has the feel of a brand new course — while staying true to the original Tom Fazio design. Because the grass blades are wider and the color deeper, the grass promotes ribbon cutting, making it visually appealing. Just imagine the dew on the fairway with a low blanket of fog rising to meet the sunlight and the noticeable ribbons of color accenting the course. “This new feature is more aesthetically pleasing and complements what we have done beyond the grassing project,” Mulvey explained. Throughout the course, golfers have enjoyed aesthetic changes, including previous areas of overgrowth that have been thinned significantly, thanks in part to new equipment that can reach into and penetrate the thick underbrush. benefit has been a more noticeable unimpeded gentle breeze, which can be a welcomed respite some days. “This course renovation was a major undertaking, and our leadership team decided early on that it would not be enough to just regrass the course,” said Mike Jansen, Managing Director of The Clubs by JOE. “We wanted to elevate the entire golf experience for our Members.” The course consultants that were engaged to develop the renovation plan suggested a holistic approach be taken, looking at and considering numerous items needing to be addressed. “There was a keen desire to open up the course, allowing for better views. The removal of overgrowth then allowed us to lay pine straw in feature areas, adding another interesting layer of natural elements,” Mulvey said. Additionally, every bunker has new sand. G-angle Bunker Sand was selected because it reduces washouts, provides excellent
drainage and stays in place longer on steeper bunkers. Most Florida sand is round in shape and can create softer playing conditions within the bunkers due to its structure and ability to compact. The “G Angle” meets the USGA recommendations for bunker sand. This new sand, due to its varying angles, resists compaction and, as such, doesn’t allow the ball to sink into the profile. Members had been missing Camp Creek Golf Course since March, but there is no doubt that the reward was worth the wait. When playing a round now, it is like playing on a new course altogether. “We are excited about the results,” Mulvey concluded. “Members who have played the course have been enthusiastic, which was our objective from the outset, which is very rewarding. We can’t guarantee that it will up your game, but we can guarantee it will lift your spirits.”

By Matt Hipps, PGA Head Golf Professional, Shark’s Tooth Golf Club
Greenside bunkers can be challenging for any golfer. Approaching the shot with the right mindset and getting comfortable with a few basic skills will help lower your score and ultimately lead to a more enjoyable golf experience.
PROPER SETUP
‣ A nice wide stance with a fair amount of knee bend
will give you a good base. Aim your clubface towards the target and open your stance slightly while putting a little more weight on your left foot (for right-handed golfers). Ball position will vary based on the length of the shot, however a good rule of thumb is to play it slightly forward of the middle of your stance.
THE SWING
‣ Make sure to keep your weight forward through the
entire shot. Falling back, or away from the target, will cause the club to bottom out too early leading to the dreaded “bladed” shot. Work on being able to hit the same spot in the sand over and over again. Once you are able to do that, adjust your ball position to vary the distance of your shot. The less sand you take before the ball, the farther the ball will travel and vice versa.
ACCELERATION IS KEY
‣ A great visual is to try and hit the sand from
underneath the ball out of the bunker. Greenside bunkers are the only place on the golf course where you don’t want the club to make contact with the ball, so you’ll need to generate enough speed for the sand to carry the ball out of the bunker for you.
MANAGE EXPECTATIONS
‣ Don’t get caught up in trying to hit the perfect shot.
The number one goal with any greenside bunker shot is to get the ball out of the bunker on the first attempt. The PGA Tour average for sand saves in 2020 is 49.5%. So the best players in the world only get the ball up and down half of the time. Matt is available for private and group instruction. Set up a lesson by contacting the Shark’s Tooth Golf Shop at (850) 249-3041 or sending Matt an email matthew.hipps@stjoeclub.com.

Barry Webb DIRECTOR OF TENNIS What led you to your current job?
I’ve been in the tennis industry for 25 years. My first head professional position was at Coosa Country Club in Rome, Georgia, which then led to a director’s position at The Country Club of Birmingham. The next transition led to my current role as Director of Tennis here at The Clubs by JOE. I consider it a privilege to bring my prior experience with country clubs to a private club in a resort setting. Describe a typical workday?
It consists of teaching private, semi-private and group lessons for both adults and juniors. I also address any Member needs, concerns or questions, recruit players for participation in tennis events, monitor the facilities, and manage merchandise and operational needs for the tennis department — all while trying to make each Member experience better than the day before. What I really enjoy most is seeing players improve their game and watching them learn things on the court that translate into life lessons when off the court.

What is your favorite part about what you do?
I’m passionate about helping people. I appreciate the fact that I have the opportunity to lift people up when they are down, encourage them to keep pressing forward when times are challenging and to believe in themselves no matter what situation they may encounter. What three words would best describe you?
Driven. Grounded. Connected. I’m driven by working hard and take great satisfaction from being busy and productive. I’m grounded by my core values that are unchanging and define purpose for my life. I’m connected by meeting new people and building relationships. What’s the biggest change you’ve seen during your time here?
The biggest changes I have noticed is the growth and engagement of the membership over the past three years. With more growth of our membership, we obviously see more utilization of Club amenities; and with increased engagement, we have seen more participation in our various Club events. What motivates you to work hard?
I’m motivated by knowing that I can make a difference. What I mean by that is I know that if I work hard and do the best job I can, I will continue to grow the Clubs’ tennis program, cultivate strong relationships, create support for events and ultimately improve our Members’ experiences. What advice would you give your younger self?
Respond to principal not pressure, be very particular about your choices and decisions, always believe in yourself and abilities and be yourself because everyone else is already taken.
Director of Tennis Barry Webb poses with some students from his junior class. Webb teaches private, semiprivate and group lessons for both adults and juniors.

Grace and Rico Allen find their dream home — and find time to help those in need BY TIM LINAFELT
member spotlight
PHOTOS COURTESY OF GRACE ALLEN
BEFORE HE WAS A STAR with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, before she branched out to become a renowned lifestyle blogger and podcaster, and before they became parents of three children, Ricardo and Grace Allen were college sweethearts. After a promising first season on the Purdue University football team, Ricardo had become something of a big man on the school’s West Lafayette, Ind., campus. He was among the Boilermakers’ best defenders, and his image and likeness were featured on a slew of promotional materials — including a few billboards and busses. Grace, however, wasn’t much of a football fan. After meeting through a friend, Grace got Ricardo confused for someone else — another friend of a friend named, “Albert.” And she referred to Ricardo by that name. Frequently. “He never had the heart to correct me,” she remembered with a laugh. It wasn’t until hours later that a young boy, who Grace had been babysitting, revealed her football faux pas. “I don’t know who this ‘Albert’ person is,” the boy told her, “but that’s Ricardo Allen. You should know who he is.” The football player with his face on billboards and busses asked her out for ice cream the next day. And “that was it,” Grace said. “We spent every day together after that.”
That first date has since led to nine years as a couple, five years of marriage and three children: son Luca, 4, daughter Lennon, 2, and newborn daughter Luna. Along the way, the Allen family has balanced Ricardo’s seven-year career with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, Grace’s blossoming online presence — she has more than 33,000 Instagram followers thanks in large part to her blog — and, most recently, a new, family-focused podcast featuring both Ricardo and Grace called “All in with the Allens.” All of that — on top of mom and dad duties to Luca, Lennon and Luna — makes for a jam-packed calendar in the Allen household. “It’s a grind, to say the least, but it’s cool,” said Ricardo. “It builds you up. You’ve got to learn to be in the present moment, and where you’re at right now is what’s most important.” A Place To Call Home
With so much going on — not the least of which being an NFL season that started in September — the Allens don’t often have time to unwind. But they’ve found the perfect place to do it. A native of Chicago, Grace vacationed along the Emerald Coast as a child. While searching for a familyfriendly vacation spot within driving distance of Atlanta, she had the idea to go back. The Allens arrived at WaterSound Beach Club expecting a relaxing week by the water before Ricardo reported to training camp with the Falcons. It didn’t take long to realize that they had found so much more. “We hadn’t even been there 24 hours,” Grace said, “and we were like, ‘This is a great place.’ ” So great that, a day after arriving at the WaterSound Beach community, Ricardo was browsing real estate listings and making calls to agents. Just a day after that, Ricardo and Grace Allen
NFL star Rico Allen and wife Grace say they have found the perfect home for them and their growing family, including son Luca (4) and daughters Lennon (3) and Luna (now 5 months).

found themselves under contract for what they called a “magical” home by the beach. How’s that for an eventful vacation? “It was really crazy,” Grace said with a smile. The Allens quickly found a lot to love about the WaterSound Beach community. The white picket fences, the architecture of the homes, the tennis courts — and the golf courses that Ricardo says he’s saving for his post-football life. “You can really picture an enchanting time with your family in that neighborhood and at the beach club,” Grace said. When the Allens close their eyes and dream of their home in WaterSound, their thoughts immediately drift to the beaches. “For us, it’s just taking the kids to the beach and letting them have those days to build sandcastles and play,” Grace said. “There’s nothing like it. The beach is undefeated when it comes to entertaining children.” As much as Grace and Ricardo cherish their beachside adventures with Luca, Lennon and Luna, they’re also thrilled to know that their home in the WaterSound Beach community will be a part of their family’s story for generations to come. “To give our children those memories of growing up there together is going to be something that’s so special,” Grace said. “There’s something about being out there,” Ricardo added, “just sitting at the ocean and feeling like you’re free from the world for that bit of time that you have. It’s a beautiful place.” PHOTOS COURTESY OF GRACE ALLEN
Paying It Forward
For all that Ricardo has done on the football field, it was a recent recognition away from the gridiron that moved him most. This past December, Ricardo and Grace went to the Falcons’ Community Honors Dinner expecting nothing more than an evening among friends and teammates. The Falcons, though, had a surprise in store.
Grace Allen said her husband leads by example when he gives back to the community, which provides a positive role model for their children.
After recognizing several members of the franchise for their charitable efforts and service in the community, the Falcons bestowed their biggest honor on Ricardo, naming him their nominee for the 2019 Walter Payton Man of the Year award. The award honors those players with a passion for service and charity work. “It was just a blessing,” said Ricardo, who has donated more than $45,000 to the Atlanta Falcons Social Justice Committee and who holds a free football camp each summer in his hometown of Daytona Beach, Fla. “It was a big surprise. It was something that I never thought I could get, to tell you the truth. “To be the Man of the Year for the Falcons, it was one of the coolest awards that I’ve ever gotten. Because that’s not just about being a football player. That’s about making a change in the world.” Ricardo knows the value of a helping hand. One of four children in a home with a single mother, he grew up in what he calls a “rough” neighborhood. But rather than look back on his childhood with sadness or resentment, Ricardo instead has fond memories of his neighborhood community. And he can’t help but smile when he thinks of how each neighboring family rallied around each other.
“My family, we don’t come from very much,” Ricardo said. “When I was growing up, neighbors always came together. If one family had some chicken, the next family had some rice, the next family had some potatoes — we’d come together and make a dinner so all of us could eat. “It would be three or four families surviving together. Sometimes we didn’t have it, and other families would come help us. And they never looked down on us.” All the while, Ricardo dreamed of a career in pro football — and the opportunities he would have to pay forward the good he had received as a child. “I said to myself, once I got the opportunity and once I got put in this position to help other people, I made sure I kept that true,” he said. That might be an understatement. “He represents ‘team’ to the highest level,” Falcons coach Dan Quinn said in a news conference last year. “And so, (recently), we were in our team meeting. And I asked the team, if you’ve been mentored, supported or encouraged by Ricardo Allen, please stand up. “And the entire room stands up.” “It’s just really cool for our kids,” Grace said. “It’s going to be cool for them to know that their dad played in the NFL. But I think it’s going to be even better for them to realize that their dad was a great person in the midst of it all, too.”
