MEMBERSHIP A MESSAGE FROM THE MEMBERSHIP TEAM If you think locker rooms are just a place for Members to hang their street clothes before a round of golf, think again!

Carly Sostheim

Through the years, clubhouse locker rooms have evolved into much more than mere changing rooms. They have been transformed into social gathering spots and places to pamper yourself. What sets a luxurious locker room apart from a simple changing room is the quality and variety of amenities available. We offer an array of complimentary toiletries in the vanity stations. These come in handy when whether you’re heading to the locker room to prepare for a round on the course or freshening up after your round before dining in the Grill.

Carolyn Webre

Our goal is to create a comfortable and friendly locker room atmosphere at Shark’s Tooth that mirrors our Club culture. Locker rooms can be used as retreats to relax and rehash the day or gathering spaces for a game of bridge or intense poker match amongst friends. Our private lockers have proven to be useful spaces to store a change of clothes, valuables, or even a hiding place for a gift purchase from the golf shop!

If you’ve never considered having a private locker at the Club, we encourage you to try one out. Men’s and women’s lockers are available in ¼, ½, and full-size options. Contact the Shark’s Tooth Golf Shop at 850.249.3041 for availability and pricing information on annual locker rentals. You won’t regret it! Hollie Parker

GOLF A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF Sean McGaughey, PGA Director of Golf I hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying all of your new toys! The holiday season is such a wonderful time of the year and I hope you and your families had a wonderful Christmas. We had a few ups and downs with the weather this holiday season, but it was great to see so many faces out a the Clubs. On behalf of all of the golf staff, I would like to thank each of you for participating in our events this year and helping us continue to make The Clubs by JOE the premier Club in Northwest Florida. If there is anything that we can do to help make your experience with us better, you need only ask! We had our annual Member Holiday Party at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club in December. Mr. Henderson was almost unrecognizable as the Grinch and Mr. MacBride did a wonderful job as Buddy the Elf. Our big winner of the night was a Christmas Elf named Debby Sneed who pulled it off perfectly! Great Job Mrs. Sneed! A big thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s sale and Christmas party at the club and let’s make 2019 even better. If you haven’t gone to the mail lately, please do so and check out the 2019 Golf Handbook. This handbook will give you any of the events and registration dates we have during the 2019 season. This book is also designed to help you with any questions you might have about club rules, tournament rules, handicap policies, and updated rules for the 2019 season. If you have any questions and need help, please feel free to contact us at either golf shop. In an effort to continue to keep the clubs in great shape we ask again that you be very careful around the greens and tee boxes with cart traffic. It might not look like you are causing damage, but the actions you take today affect us during the season. To ensure we have premium conditions during the 2019 season please help us in staying at least 20 yards from all greens and tee complexes. As always I look forward to seeing you soon and thank you all for your support during the 2018 season.

Happy New Year!

CHEF’S CORNER 8 TRADITIONAL NEW YEAR’S DAY FOODS THAT ARE GOOD LUCK Source: RealSimple.com; Read original article here.

Black-Eyed Peas Eating black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day is a time honored tradition. There are a few different reasons why they’re associated with luck on New Year’s Day. One theory anchors the tradition in the Civil War, when Union soldiers raided the Confederate army’s food supply, leaving behind only this bean. Another is anchored in African American history, where newlyfreed slaves celebrated the January 1863 Emancipation Proclamation with dishes made of black-eyed peas—one of the few foods available to slaves.

Pork Ham is often a holiday centerpiece, but pork is specifically known to bring good luck on New Year’s Day. Why is pork on New Year’s a tradition? First, it has to do with the way pigs, as opposed to other animals, behave. According to some theorists, while chickens and turkeys scratch backward, a pig buries his snout into the ground and moves forward—in the same direction you want to head in the New Year.

Cabbage This tradition also hails from Germany and Eastern Europe, and is, again, rooted in simple logistics: A late fall harvest coupled with a six-to-eight-week fermenting process means that sauerkraut is just about ready when New Year’s rolls around. But cabbage on New Year’s is also steeped in symbolism—the strands of cabbage in sauerkraut or coleslaw can symbolize a long life, while cabbage can also symbolize money.

Cake Many cultures have specific New Year’s cakes. For example, the Greeks enjoy a cake called Vasilopita, (also known as king pie or basil-pie) made only for New Year’s and only eaten on New Year’s Day. This Greek New Year’s cake is sweet, bready, and topped with almonds. Traditionally, the cake is baked with a coin or trinket, and the person who gets that slice is supposed to have good luck for the year ahead.

Greens Greens themselves are known to be lucky for New Year’s. It’s all about the green, which symbolizes money and prosperity. According to some tradition rooted in the South, greens can be hung by the door to ward off any evil spirits that may come your way.

Lentils Another legume, lentils are often served in Italian households, and again, their legend is rooted in prosperity: The round legumes look like coins. Lentils for New Year’s Eve are traditionally eaten after midnight, along with pork and sausages.

Fruits In Filipino culture, New Year’s Eve is celebrated with fruits. How many kinds of fruit for the New Year? Twelve, to symbolize each month. Filipinos also look for round fruits, but mangoes and watermelon can make the cut. In Mexico, grapes are eaten at midnight to symbolize the year ahead, and throughout the world, pomegranates, a symbol of fertility and birth, are eaten at the new year.

Fish In Scandinavian countries, herring was considered a harbinger of good fortune, especially as the silver-scaled fish called to mind valuable money. Herring, heavily traded, also was essential to the prosperity of the country, so eating herring was a way to hope for a good catch in the months to come, as herring had unpredictable migration patterns, and a good year didn’t necessarily indicate the next year would be as successful. Today, not only can it symbolize good fortune, it can also make a great New Year’s appetizer.
