EMBRACING CHANGE Change can begin slowly at first and then all at once

I

f we have learned anything over the past year or so, it is that change can come suddenly and drastically. Sometimes it can make us have to strain to remember how “normal” used to feel. Change to some is unnerving. It knocks us off-kilter a bit. Many times, however, change is exhilarating, necessary, and welcome. As you will see in this issue of Watersound Lifestyle, exciting changes are happening at your Club. Change means a new name when Members felt the old one did not quite resonate with who we are as a Club. Change means a new menu when Members seek more variety and offerings. It means hiring additional talent to meet the needs and wishes of our growing, diverse Membership. Change means creating new spaces that we can experience with those we care about. Change is beautiful, necessary and part of who we are as a Club and company. Watersound Club will always strive to reinvent the way we do things — flip them over, take them apart, reimagine them and place a bow on top for all to enjoy. We are excited to present the latest issue of Watersound Lifestyle so you can learn all about the changes at Watersound Club. Thank you for being an integral part of our Club family. Clubhouses are only pretty buildings and golf courses are only grass without our Membership. You are the heart of all we do. Our sincere hope is that you enjoy all the fun and exciting changes at Watersound Club and cherish the things that remain the same — our commitment to serving you, your families and your guests. We look forward to seeing you soon and often.

PUBLIX SUPER MARKET is expected to be one of the anchor businesses for the new Town Center.

A

n intersection that for years served as little more than the entrance to the Watersound Origins community to the north and a cut through to Scenic Highway 30A to the south is rapidly evolving into one of South Walton County’s more lively locales. Anyone who has passed through the intersection of U.S. Highway 98 and Watersound Parkway has surely noticed its maturation. Out of sight of busy U.S. Highway 98, the Watersound Origins community has been steadily growing and is currently among the most desirable single-family home communities in all of Northwest Florida. With the Watersound Origins Crossings apartment community welcoming residents and construction ready to start on a new townhome project, more

and more families, empty nesters and young professionals are calling this ideally located spot home. The time has come, according to Dan Velazquez, the senior vice president for commercial real estate at the St. Joe Company, for the longplanned Watersound Town Center to become a reality. Work has been progressing since 2019 on the mixeduse project that Velazquez believes will grow and evolve over the next several years, much like the community that it anchors. Ascension Sacred Heart, with a 6,500-square-foot medical clinic, became the first Town Center tenant. Site work for another anchor, a Publix grocery store, is underway. A two-story mixed-use building is going up near the heart of the Town Center. Plans call for the first restaurant, retail

and office tenants to be operational in less than a year. In time, several such buildings will become home to professional offices on the second floor, with retail and restaurant spaces below. By way of amenities, a nearly complete open-air pavilion that will host farmers markets and other events is taking shape. Velazquez likened it in feel to the French Market in New Orleans or the City Market in Charleston. Adjoining it, plans call for a grassy events area to host musicians, rotating art exhibits and various events to attract people to the center. Interest in leasable commercial space at the Town Center has been strong among boutiques and restaurants on the first floor, with doctors, attorneys, real estate professionals and the like opting for secondfloor space, according to Velazquez.

Our current focus is on creating that welcoming and desirable environment by attracting the right mix of tenants and designing spaces where people will want to spend their time.” Time will tell which businesses, both local and from afar, will open their doors at Watersound Town Center. For now, Velazquez and his team are focused on laying the foundation for years of growth at the center. He explained, “As we are finalizing leases for the portion of the Town Center that is under construction, we are looking to the future and how the next buildings to come out of the ground and those tenants will complement the entire project to create an atmosphere for shopping, dining, conducting business or just people watching that will be hard to beat.” WATERSOUND Origins Town Center is already taking shape as the area's new hub for commerce.

The development of the town center is expected to take many years, and the development plan will likely be modified from time to time to respond to varying market conditions and changes in circumstances. Marina Reopenings ON TAP FOR BAY POINT AND PORT ST. JOE Recovery from Hurricane Michael has been a steady process Written By KARI C. BARLOW

24

SUMMER/FALL 2021

◆ WATERSOUND LIFESTYLE

AFTER THE DEVASTATION OF Hurricane Michael, Bay Point Marina is on its way back to normality.

B

oating, fishing and watersports are as much a part of life along the Gulf Coast as college football and family get-togethers. The region’s bays, rivers, lakes and the turquoise water of the Gulf of Mexico are a beacon to all types of boaters, from the novice weekend fisherman to the most skilled captains. According to Daniel Fussell, marina director with St. Joe Hospitality, “People do not move to the coast to sit on their couches. People want beaches and boats. And to have boats, the area needs marinas.” It is with that mindset that St. Joe Hospitality began planning for potential future marinas in Northwest Florida while rebuilding its two marinas that were destroyed by Hurricane Michael in 2018. Nearly three years after the Category 5 storm made landfall, the company’s marinas in Port St. Joe and the Bay Point community in Panama City Beach are making significant progress towards planned reopenings. Each marina had its own distinct personality that fit the character of the surrounding community. With their ongoing rebuilds, St. Joe Hospitality intends to recapture some of that magic, all while rebuilding the marinas’ offerings and facilities to attract boaters both local and from afar.

‘A PLACE YOU’LL CALL HOME’

Bay Point Marina — created in the late 1960s and early ’70s, developed over decades, and purchased by St. Joe in 2008 — was a go-to marina for recreational boaters in and around Bay County. “Bay Point Marina was a place where boats of all sizes could come in and be treated with class — from boats of 20 feet to those at 125 feet,” Fussell recalled. “Each boater was treated like they were the next mega yacht making its way through the channel.”

“We always said, ‘whether you stay a day, a week, a month or a lifetime, Bay Point Marina is a place you’ll call home.’” —Daniel Fussell, Marina Director

It was the kind of place that specialized in making folks feel like they were part of a big, fun-loving family who enjoyed fishing, cruising, and watching football on the back deck of their boats with friends. “We always said, ‘whether you stay a day, a week, a month or a lifetime, Bay Point Marina is a place you’ll call home.’” “Boats from all over the world would stop in because the captains and owners knew of Bay Point Marina’s reputation as a tucked-away safe harbor, that the staff was knowledgeable, and that our relationship with the marine industry was like no other,” Fussell said. “When it came to customer service, Bay Point Marina aimed to set a new standard.” The rebuild that is currently taking place at the marina includes plans for 127 wet slips for boats

of various sizes. Other planned features include a ship’s store and the potential to offer pontoon boat rentals, fishing charters and dolphin tours.

‘A SMALL MARINA WITH A BIG HEART’

Much like the town whose name it bears, Port St. Joe Marina elicits fond memories among those who visited the marina since it was built in the late 1990s. “Port St. Joe Marina enjoyed a reputation as a great place in Florida to get a boat and go scalloping each year,” Fussell said. “It was just a small marina with a big heart and over the years was tagged by some cruising guides as Florida’s friendliest marina.” While it primarily served the boating community from the South Georgia, Tallahassee and

◆ WATERSOUND LIFESTYLE

surrounding areas, the marina also attracted its share of non-boating tourists. “Once scallop season started, the marina was full of vacationers renting boats, fishing charters and taking snorkel trips, just trying to get their fill of scallop, pompano, trout or redfish,” Fussell said. This marina rebuild has includes a new dry storage barn that is currently under construction with plans to hold up to 252 boats of up to 45 feet long. Much like Bay Point Marina, plans for the wet slips at Port St. Joe will make it possible for the marina to welcome vessels up to 125 feet in length. “Port St. Joe is a small fishing town, and everyone either knows how to fish, wants to fish or just wants to be on the water,” Fussell said. “A fishing town is not really a fishing town without its marina.”

“Once scallop season started, the marina was full of vacationers renting boats, fishing charters and taking snorkel trips, just trying to get their fill of scallop, pompano, trout or redfish.” —Daniel Fussell, Marina Director

‘ON THE HORIZON’

In addition to these marinas, St. Joe Hospitality is considering new marina locations in the future to service the boating community. The company previously announced plans to construct a public marina along the Intracoastal Waterway near West Bay and the Latitude Margaritaville Watersound community in Bay

County. Planning for that marina is still ongoing, but its intended location provides convenient access to West Bay, Choctawhatchee Bay and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico. Bay Point Marina could potentially see a second phase of construction that would increase the quantity and size of its wet slips. As long as boating continues to

be a way of life for many along the Gulf Coast, local marinas will be a vital part of that lifestyle. With its marinas that are under construction and others that may become a reality in the future, St. Joe Hospitality hopes to create destinations that will welcome boaters with a level of service that will keep them coming back year after year.

Vision

A IS TAKING SHAPE Amenity renovation and expansion continues to delight Written By PRATT FARMER

S

omeone once said, “little by little becomes a lot.” That is certainly the case at Watersound Club. Only a couple of years ago, The St. Joe Company announced a major amenity expansion adjacent to Camp Creek Golf Course, as well as enhancements to the course itself. That progress is becoming more visible every day, most evidenced by the re-grassing, heavy pruning of undergrowth around various spots and total transformation of the golf course. As part of the total upgrade, Watersound Club’s Golf Performance Center opened in early April. Providing a more technical approach to helping golfers improve their game, the center has already received many positive comments from Members. Over the past few months, to support the infrastructure, approximately 4 miles of new paved road has been laid, along with curbing and gutters — more evidence that the best is yet to come. The Watersound Club expansion is beginning to take shape with the planned Wellness Center, pool, poolside dining venue and kids club now all under construction. Lying just east of the clubhouse, plans for the Wellness Center place a great deal of emphasis on group fitness, along with steam rooms, saunas, a lap pool and more, all designed with the Member in mind. Members will find the proposed Wellness Center a place to regenerate, rejuvenate and refresh. The entry lobby will be a welcoming 34

place that sets the mood for the entire building. Interior designer Sarah Harvey, of the Chicago-based interiors firm The Gettys Group, likens the anticipated reception area to a fivestar resort where cool greens and weathered tile set the tone. “We incorporated colors that celebrate the richness of what one sees all over the property. Our goal has been to provide a most luxurious space that

emanates a subtleness that serves to calm the spirit and invigorate the soul,” she says. Due to the overwhelming popularity of spin classes, the lower-level fitness room will be dedicated to this type of workout. In the spin room, there are plans for a series of tiered platforms, accommodating up to 20 spin cycles. It has been designed with state-of-the-art equipment for

classes. Expect the spin class to be an immersive workout. Typically, the lights are changing, there’s loud music, and your mind and body get lost in the exercise. Be sure to arrive at class early, bring a water bottle and a towel and wear a comfortable workout outfit and sneakers. If spin class isn’t enough exercise, how about a few laps or water aerobics in the pool? Adult Members will

be able to step outside onto a private pool deck to relax, read the latest novel or swim a few laps in the planned adult-only pool. “Our goal with this area has been to create a facility that offers a variety of spaces, all designed according to exceed a Member’s expectations. From sunbathing to relaxing in the shade of a cabana, the wellness pool truly is a very versatile outdoor space that will have great appeal,” says architect Mark Diedrich, AIA, whose Atlanta-based firm KDC Architecture designed the new venues. Just outside of the future Wellness Center, work on the planned pool complex is underway. A highly anticipated component of the pool complex will be the availability of food and beverage in the nearby planned poolside dining venue. Harvey says the dining venue design harkens back to the old Southern-style roadside BBQ, where there were ample picnic tables, mouth-watering menus on chalkboards and hanging lights. “We were inspired by the roadside BBQ joint that cared more about its delicious food than the furnishings. While we didn’t skimp on the appropriately sourced creature comforts Members would want, we really did design with food and drink in mind,” she says. For those Members wanting to grab a drink at the bar while waiting for a to-go order, there’s ample seating for that as well. Plans call for exposed timber frames and dark wooden floors that will serve to complement the corrugated tin walls. For those with a competitive spirit, just outside the planned dining venue there is space for several cornhole games beckoning players, young and old, to come over for a toss. Not a bad way to spend the afternoon. At times, Members will just want to sit around to relax and reminisce after a day on the course or an afternoon at the pool. What better way to put a cap to the day than sitting around a firepit as the sun sets, casting rays of light through the tall pine trees? Kids can enjoy

A FULLY EQUIPPED gym and wellness pool are just a couple of the new amenities that Members can look forward to at Watersound Club.

s’mores while the adults renew old acquaintances and make new friends. Without a doubt, kids are vital to our community. As a special place for them to gather, make new friends or just hang out, the proposed Kids Club promises to be a very unique place that they will enjoy for years to come. Cozy, casual and comfortable have been the words often used to describe the vision for this facility. Plans call for saturated blue walls to set the tone with textural neutral colored carpet with hints of blue and green, reminding even the kids that this is a very special place. Plans also call for air hockey, foosball and shuffleboard tables. An outside covered patio is also planned with tables and chairs that will allow for dining, board games and, who knows, maybe even homework getting done! “We want this venue to be a place that kids think of as their own,” says Harvey. “It was very important to the design team that we create a space that kept with the style of the club, yet clearly delineates it from the more adult-centric spaces.” It’s worth noting that adjacent to the Kids Club will be a grassed area, perfect for soccer and lacrosse. Of course, in addition to the golf course, we have just

about every other sport covered. Tennis, pickleball, basketball and bocce take a front row position. This incredible line-up of new amenities — in what is being called “Phase One” — is anticipated to be completed in mid-2022. Recognizing that an expansion of this caliber requires special expertise, and as was previously announced to our Members, Manny Belete has joined our team as General Manager of Watersound Camp Creek. “Manny’s previous experience at Palmetto Bluff, Baker’s Bay in the Bahamas and The Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda will provide the leadership and direction required of a topquality resort type community that is Camp Creek,” says Mike Jansen, Vice President of Watersound Club. “We expect that the Guest House, a 75-room inn, will open late next year. This facility will be the central component of Phase Two,” said Belete. The Guest House is being planned as a unique, stylized boutique inn designed to provide a high level of guest services. “Visiting guests will have an option to reserve a room right in the heart of the Club’s amenities,” he said. “We can’t wait to welcome Members to all of these new amenities once they are complete” said Jansen. “We believe that with these additions, Watersound Club will offer a Member experience unlike anywhere else.”

TIME TO

PERFORM Golfers take advantage of new technology to enhance their game Written By PRATT FARMER

PERFECTING YOUR form just got a whole lot easier with the Club's new Golf Performance Center.

42

SUMMER/FALL 2021

◆ WATERSOUND LIFESTYLE

In April, Watersound Club’s Golf Performance Center opened. As part of the Club’s multi-million-dollar program to enhance the golfing experience, Watersound Club decided to invest in a stateof-the-art facility that would address many of the challenges today’s golfer faces. The Club tapped Ben Blalock to be its director of instruction. Blalock was most recently in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he managed a similar program and facility for Members at North Ridge Country Club. Paired with adding Blalock, a 1,500-square-foot building was designed and built near the practice range at Camp Creek Golf Course, housing the technology, lifelike venues and appropriate space to allow for multiple golfers to use modern technology to help improve their game. Employing the most recognized golf instructional platform, TrackMan, Members and their guests can take advantage of a highly developed venue for improving golf techniques. The facility was designed to accommodate three simulator practice bays, all with roll-up doors, allowing the ball to soar across the practice range. Radar technology tracks the ball, measuring both flight and club motion data. The gameplay is unbelievably smooth, and all your club and ball data is shown with unerring, pinpoint accuracy. In addition to a most realistic experience, golfers can also use the technology to better understand the weight, face, lift, loft and angle of their swing

and club. “This data is very helpful when a Member is trying to improve his or her performance on the course but is not able to identify the problem. My job is to help Members understand the cause of the problem and assist them as they navigate the process of development designed to improve their flaws and push them toward levels of skill they’ve not previously experienced,” says Blalock. According to TrackMan’s website, the system utilizes their combined radar and camera technology to make your experience as accurate indoors as it is outdoors. The entire ball flight model has been completely remodeled to reproduce even truer ball behavior. Improved spin measurements and redesigned bounce-spinand-roll algorithms give greens a genuine feel. For the Member looking for a new club, TrackMan technology also allows Blalock and staff to measure the intricate details of impact between ball and club to accurately suggest the most appropriate club. The

Performance Center is home to full fitting systems from the best in club brands; you will find Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, PING and PXG. Never had the opportunity to play St. Andrews, Muirfield Village or Bandon Dunes? Well, now you can grab three of your closest friends and reserve a spot to play these courses or your choice of over 75 other options, utilizing the latest in realistic video simulation. Just think, every hole you play, every fun tournament you have with your friends — it’s all faithful to the true feeling of the game. World-famous courses appear in stunning detail. “Our goal in building this facility for our Members is to help them to better enjoy the game of golf. Whether it is working on your swing, shopping for a new club, or simply wanting to have a fun outing with friends playing on a virtual course, we strive to make your experience as fulfilling as possible,” says Mike Jansen, Vice President of Watersound Club.

“My job is to help Members fully understand the cause of the problem and then assist them as they navigate the process of development designed to improve their flaws and push them toward levels of skill they’ve not previously experienced.” — Ben Blalock, director of instruction

A PRO’S CHOICE

Rocco Mediate

As our slice of paradise in Northwest Florida continues to be discovered, families from all over the country are finding their home at Watersound Club. Recently, PGA Tour Champions player Rocco Mediate and his family chose Watersound Club for their future. After a visit to the area, they fell in love with the Watersound Origins community and the amenities that Club membership affords them. Originally from Greensburg, Pennsylvania, Mediate attended and played golf at Florida Southern College. He began his professional career in 1985, where he tallied six PGA Tour wins between 1991 and 2010. Most notably, at the 2008 U.S. Open, Mediate tied with Tiger Woods at 1-under at the end of

tournament play. They tied again at even-par through the 18-hole playoff. Ultimately, Woods bested Mediate on the first hole of sudden death (the 91st hole of the tournament). This was only the third time a U.S. Open playoff had gone to sudden death. Mediate joined the Champions Tour in 2013 and won his debut at the Allianz Championship. He claimed his second victory on the Champions Tour that September at the Shaw Charity Classic. In total, Rocco has won four Champions Tour events since 2013. We invite you to tune in to the remainder of the Champions Tour schedule and cheer on fellow Watersound Club Member Rocco Mediate. You may even catch a glimpse of the Watersound Club logo on Rocco’s hat!

TRAVEL IS UP IN THE AIR … Jennifer and Paul Copeland have been Members of Watersound Club since 2018. Paul has become a frequent flier on the Club’s* Pilatus PC-12 NG, so we sat down with him to find out why this Member benefit has become so valuable to his family and business.

To date, you have used the plane six or seven times for both business and pleasure. Why?

Convenience is the most compelling reason. When traveling by air commercially, it will take at least an hour to go through check-in, TSA screening, gate agents and boarding. Depending on where I am headed, I can add at least another one to two hours on the other end, especially in Atlanta or Miami. If my wife and 10-month-old are along, add more time. But with Watersound Club’s Pilatus, we pull right up to the plane, get on and take off. It makes traveling stress-free, even with a toddler.

50

SUMMER/FALL 2021

◆ WATERSOUND LIFESTYLE

Tell us about a recent trip.

We flew to Marco Island for Easter. It was wonderful. The crew was waiting for us in the hangar when we pulled up. My wife and I boarded the plane and we were in the air in less than 15 minutes. She immediately was able to spread out a blanket on the floor in the back of the plane for our son to play with his toys. After our visit to Marco Island, I traveled on to Miami on a commercial flight, and she was flown back to Beaches International in the Club’s Pilatus. The plane landed and taxied to the hangar, where her car was inside, cool and safe. It was as easy as that.

WHETHER IT'S FOR a stress-free family outing or a convenient business excursion, Watersound Club's private charter service is up for any trip.

What’s so different about our* charter service when compared to others you have used? The Watersound Club concierge service, without a doubt. Recently, I took my staff to Tampa to celebrate a company goal they had achieved. We arrived at the terminal to be greeted by a huge balloon arch with a congratulatory message. The plane was stocked with champagne and strawberries, which was a huge hit. The entire experience was unique for them. Not only did it make them feel special, but they also shared the experience as a team, which further bonded them.

You have even taken clients, haven’t you? Yes and they have been very impressed with just how comfortable the plane is. It’s luxurious and there’s plenty of room to spread out, work, enjoy a sandwich or cocktail and focus on the business at hand. Again, it’s the concierge service. To call,

even on short notice, and get the plane stocked with food and your favorite beverages is huge. I have also received compliments about the crew and their attentiveness to our needs. They make you feel very at ease and special.

What advice do you offer a Member considering taking advantage of the Pilatus charter?

Don’t hesitate to use it. It saves time, eliminates the hassle of flying commercially today. In the end, time is a precious commodity that can’t be recaptured.

*In arranging flights in the aircraft, St. Joe Resort Operations, LLC (the “Club Owner”) acts solely as an air charter broker. The Club Owner is not a direct air carrier or a direct foreign air carrier in operational control of aircraft. The air service referred to herein is provided by Western Aircraft, Inc. dba WestAir Charter, a properly licensed direct air carrier.

TIPS

WATCH THE BALL

I would submit that there is no facet of the game more important than using your eyes to hone in on the ball. • Try seeing the racket and ball making contact on every shot. • L ook for the logo on the ball to ensure precise tracking. • K eep your head still and centered on the ball through each strike.

MOVE YOUR FEET

Footwork is essential in order to cover the court and create proper spacing between your body and the ball. • M ake a split step onto your toes right before your opponent hits their shot. • Take smaller adjustment steps as you approach the ball, so you are not too close or too far away from your contact point. • U se your feet to slow yourself down on difficult shots to allow for efficient recovery during each point.

COURT POSITIONING

TENNIS TRIFECTA

Written By BARRY WEBB director of tennis at Watersound Club

I

n this edition of Tips from the Pros, we will cover three key elements to improve your success the next time you step out on the tennis court. These tips apply to every level of player and are relative to both singles and doubles. Each area of focus can be immediately implemented to your game to increase your win percentage!

68

SUMMER/FALL 2021

◆ WATERSOUND LIFESTYLE

Becoming aware of your location on the court for each shot from the opposition will make your return reply easier to handle. • You may transition through the area known as “no man’s land” which is located between the baseline and service line, but you do not want to stay there. • R ecover behind the baseline for your ground strokes or lobs when you are on defense. • C lose in approximately two steps inside the service line for your volley or overhead when you are on offense. Watching the ball, moving your feet, and recognizing court position are known as performance goals. These are functions which you have total control over during play. They are directly related to your outcome goals of winning games, sets and matches. It is crucial to remain intensely concentrated on your performance goals to achieve your outcome goals. Practice adding each of these tips to your tennis skill set for guaranteed improvement!

HOLLIE PARKER

membership sales & relations manager

WHAT LED YOU TO YOUR CURRENT JOB? HOLLIE: I joined the Watersound Club Membership team in March of 2017 as membership coordinator. As the membership coordinator, I learned many aspects of Membership and enjoyed assisting current Members and their families. I was also able to support and learn from the Membership sales team. Last year, I was asked if I had any interest in joining the sales team. Initially, I was a bit hesitant. But, ultimately, I enjoy this side of Membership, and I am grateful for the opportunity to grow within our team. I look forward to serving our Members and their families in the years to come. DESCRIBE A TYPICAL WORKDAY? HOLLIE: The workday in the Membership Office varies from day to day. It often starts with follow-up phone calls, emails and preparing for a day of tours. Some days we have walk-ins ready to tour and learn about Membership at that moment. It can be tricky juggling my schedule, but I always accommodate the best I can. Not only do I assist prospective Members and share all of the exciting benefits Watersound Club has to offer, but I continue to assist current Members. It is always a pleasure helping Members when they reach out to me. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? HOLLIE: I genuinely love meeting new people and hearing their stories. From current to prospective Members, everyone has a story to tell. It’s rewarding to build

relationships with Members and watch their families grow along with us. WHAT THREE WORDS WOULD BEST DESCRIBE YOU? HOLLIE: I asked my coworkers to help me out on this one. They said I am organized, gracious and adaptive. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHANGE YOU’VE SEEN DURING YOUR TIME HERE? HOLLIE: In the four and half years I have been a part of the Membership Team, I’ve seen several changes. The most significant change that comes to mind is that more people are discovering our area and wanting to make this their home full-time. When I provide tours for prospective Members, I appreciate seeing so many Members enjoying our Club amenities. It’s inspiring to know so many families have found and continue to find a home here. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO WORK HARD? HOLLIE: I’ve had the privilege of meeting and building relationships with many Members over the last few years. My goal is for our Members and their families and guests to have an exceptional experience at Watersound Club. Knowing that I can contribute to each Member’s Club experience in a positive way motivates me.

mass production. But I wanted to make wines that people could feel good about drinking,” he says. From this philosophy, the Tarpon Cellars label was born. Today, the label offers something for everyone, from $20 wines to those worth well over $100. The actual labels on the bottles are nearly as distinctive as the wine itself. “We reached out to my friend and artist Charlie Hanavich to paint the labels for our wines. I love the coastal aesthetic, and his father Kevin Linsey is also a Watersound Club Member that I play golf with regularly at Camp Creek,” says Jeremy. “Tarpon Cellars is a nod to the Southern fish that we all know and love. My family has spent a lot of time on the Emerald Coast, and so I think the name and our labels really exemplify that,” says Jeremy. Fast forward, and Kate Gibbons enters the picture. Kate, a native of California, met Jeremy in Napa thanks to the dating app, Bumble. “I was so busy in my career with a tech startup in the San Francisco Bay area that I just didn’t have time to do much else,” she says. “My friends had been successful in finding someone who matched their life

interests and aspirations. So, I gave it a shot.” They both will attest that they hit it off from the very first date, which included a great culinary experience in Saint Helena, combined with a personal exploration of fine wine, with Jeremy leading the way. “Our chemistry was simply magnetic. Our conversation and laughs never stopped that night and still haven’t to this day,” says Kate. In 2020, as COVID was impacting the world, both Jeremy and Kate were looking for a way to continue their lives together. “As we started to really target distribution in the South, I wanted to set up a home base down here,” Jeremy explains. “I knew that if Kate saw the white sand beaches along 30A that she would love it as much as I do,” he says. So, after lots of discussion and exploration, the couple decided to pick up and move across the country and plant roots in Florida. “I have always dreamed of being able to spend more time here, and since the majority of our production is during a short span during harvest, it’s wonderful to be able to spend most of the year here,” says Jeremy.
