Saint Joseph’s School Prayer
Glorious Saint Joseph, spouse of the Immaculate Virgin and Foster-Father of Jesus Christ; obtain for me and all the members of my family, a pure, humble, and charitable mind, and perfect resignation to the Divine Will. Be my guide and model throughout life that I may merit to die as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary. Help us, Saint Joseph, in our earthly strife, to fulfill our responsibilities and ever to lead a pure and sinless life. Amen.
From the Head of School
Spring (almost) Greetings from Saint Joseph’s Catholic School!
With the re-emergence of flowers, warmer weather, and longer days, the admissions season kicks into full gear as we decide who will be enrolled for the upcoming school year. Saint Joseph’s is a unique school community that challenges and accompanies students as they hopefully become the best versions of themselves academically, artistically, athletically, and personally. No one knows better than our parents what is expected of a Saint Joseph’s student and who would be a good fit for our school. It is with that in mind that I ask you to spread the word among family and friends with children you think would benefit from a Saint Joseph’s education. I’d also like to remind you that the school offers a $500 tuition rebate for any new student who enrolls in the school based on your recommendation. While space is limited in several grades, we do have some openings, particularly in the rising 6th-grade class. When you bring a family to Saint Joseph’s, you help shape the character of a class and the school in general for years to come.
When telling your friends about Saint Joseph’s, please remind them that Saint Joseph’s offers a robust flexible tuition program that can make it possible for just about any family, willing to sacrifice, to provide the best education for their children. The Bishop reminded a small group of high school presidents, campus ministers, and chaplains gathered with him in Columbia for an all-day meeting that our Catholic schools in the diocese should be accessible to people from all socioeconomic backgrounds, stating that the word Catholic means universal, something Saint Joseph’s Founding Board Chair, Margaret Ann Moon, liked to remind me of often.
With this in mind, I hope that you’ll consider attending this year’s Gala which is taking place on Friday, April 26. The Gala Committee, led by co-chairs Katie Saad and Sheay Noel, is planning a fun and classy Mardi Gras-themed event. The funds raised at the Gala help make the school’s Flexible Tuition program a reality. Your generous support of the Gala is truly life-changing for the students who are given the opportunity to learn from our teachers, attend school retreats and campus ministry

meetings, and receive instruction and in many cases life-long guidance from our coaches.
Finally, I want to send shout-outs to several groups of SJCS students, beginning with the fourteen students who participated in the Palmetto Dramatic Association/SC Thespian State Festival a couple of weekends ago. As always, our students represented our school extremely well, making the case that we have one of the best theatre programs in the state. I also want to congratulate the 17 students who were recently recognized by the College Board for their outstanding academic achievements. Three of these students, Adam Balts, Christopher Suarez, and Asher Wynn, were named National Merit Finalists, placing them with the top students in the state. And, while the outcome of the season remains in the balance at the time of this writing, I want to call your attention to the outstanding season that the girls’ varsity basketball team had this year. I’ve seen them play several times this year, and they play a team brand of basketball with great intensity that is a lot of fun to watch. Hopefully, they’ll have the opportunity to compete for our first SCHSL state title. They are certainly good enough to be there. You can read more about all three groups and their accomplishments on the school’s website and social media accounts.
In closing, please join us in praying for the following members of the SJCS family: for Rosey Carpenter on the passing of her grandmother.
With Love and Prayers,
Keith F. Kiser Head of School

From the Middle School Director
“God is love. When we forget God, we lose hope and become unable to love others. That is why it is so necessary to testify to God’s presence so that others can experience it. Love is the only thing that can fill hearts and bring people together.”
Pope Benedict XVI
I could retire early if I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say how hard it is to go through middle school. And it is no surprise that these years present a variety of challenges. This period of growth and maturation is saddled with significant development - puberty, body image awareness, new friends, higher academic expectations, and the influence of cell phones, social media and YouTubers. However, as I often say, “It doesn’t have to be this way.”
We are fortunate to live and study within a community that has higher desires and expectations for its students. I have made this choice, and so have you as parents. If we don’t want middle school to be a time in life that is painfully endured and ill-regarded, we must actively and intentionally work to create an environment that is other-focused … love-focused. At Saint Joseph’s, we work really hard to make that a priority. While we may be imperfect in its delivery at times, we are solidly committed to the pursuit of this ideal day in and day out.
Mr. Patrick Martin, our Middle School Dean of Students, and Jacob Kiser, our Middle School Student Life Associate, have numerous conversations with students on a daily basis about behaviors and expectations. Sometimes, their conversations are in response to a stimulus - like a potential discipline concern that needs to be investigated; and other times, their words are preemptive, cautionary and encouraging all at the same time. Always, our desire is for love to take root - genuine, courageous, gospel-inspired love. We work against many forces that suggest to our young people that they alone are enough, that their desires, goals and ambitions should benefit only them, and that life is meant to be lived for their pleasure and avoidance of their pain - no matter the cost. Those are not values that support a culture of life and love.
There is hope amidst the anxiety and fear of raising children today. It comes to us from our faith, the gospel message, the words of Jesus who said that the greatest commandments are to love Him with all our heart, and to love others as ourselves. As your children continue to grow in maturity, wisdom and faith, there are some practical actions that will strengthen your child’s growth in holiness. Ask them how they are choosing to show love to their friend or classmates on any given day, review their text messages and group chats, monitor their Netflix viewing, or look up lyrics to songs on their playlist. These brief windows into their world provide lots of information about what and who is shaping their growth. And if what you observe is taking place in our school community, make us aware. We are allies with you on this journey. We want to be a support, a source of encouragement and a safe haven within which to talk about the things that concern you the most. We aren’t meant to go this alone.
Please continue to pray for our students, our families, our teachers and all of the people in our Saint Joseph’s community.
From the High School Director
I’ve been reading a lot lately about different varieties of Catholic spirituality, and more particularly about Ignatian discernment. Ignatius of Loyola was a soldier in 16th century Europe. In 1521 he was gravely wounded by a cannonball and never quite recovered full use of his right leg. Ignatius realized that he did not feel a spiritual peace about returning to his former life. The religious life, on the other hand, both excited and calmed him at the same time. He was inspired to devote himself to God and spent the rest of his life in service to the Church. Today, of course, we know him as the primary founder of the Jesuit order.
His sense of discernment is different from what we sometimes find in other sources. Ignatius’ approach was to find God in all things, and therefore discernment was largely a matter of identifying and cooperating with what God was already doing in the lives of his people. I’m certainly no expert in spiritual direction, but I do have my share
March 2024 News and Notes Page 6
of conversations with students about what excites them, what makes them nervous, and, increasingly, about what gives them a sense of peace. In my experience, our students are often so busy with various activities that questions about a peaceful spirit simply don’t resonate with them.
That’s something I want to add to my repertoire of questions I ask students when I talk with them one-on-one or in small groups. What gives them peace? Or, put another way, what robs them of peace? Some people think of peace as the absence of any tension or chaos, but the gospel teaches us that peace can exist not in the absence of a storm but rather right in the center of it. Confidence that that kind of peace can exist is one of the legacies I want our students to take with them when they leave Saint Joseph’s, and it’s something I’m sure many of us would like to experience while they’re here, too.
Be assured of my prayers for you and your families for a peaceful Lenten season.

Annual Fund
Our goal this fiscal year (July 2023 – June 2024) is to engage the financial support of 100% of our school families, faculty, and staff in giving to the Annual Fund. We will track participation numbers by grade level throughout the year. Currently the 6th grade is leading the way with a participation level of 44%!
Helping families afford a Saint Joseph’s education is a foundational principle to our identity as a Catholic school. The Annual Fund fulfills this responsibility by providing approximately 5% of the school’s overall budget These dollars are raised every year through the generosity of our community. Our Annual Fund goal for this year, which includes proceeds from the Gala, is $525,000. Please contact Kevin Meyer with any questions or make an online donation!

This building will contain a large multipurpose room (seating 175-200), four new Theology classrooms and offices for Campus Ministry, Student Support Services, and College Counseling. To date, we have raised 90% of the goal, and we need your help to reach the finish line! We plan to break ground on the new building this summer and open it in the Fall of 2025. If you’d like more information on the campaign and the plans, please refer to our campaign webpage.
