CAMPUS TOUR

ST. JOHN’S COLLEGE SANTA FE The Santa Fe campus of St. John’s College opened in 1964, thanks to a gift of land at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains from John and Faith Meem. Santa Fe has a high desert climate, with snow in the winter and 300 days of sunshine each year. St. John’s is 8,000 feet above sea level, which is about 1,000 feet higher than Santa Fe’s downtown area. The average January low temperature is 19°F and the average high is 44°. In August, temperatures range from 55° to 83°. The sun can be warm in the winter while nights in the summer are often cool enough to warrant sweaters.

WEIGLE HALL The building with the bell tower (and administrative offices). Weigle Hall is named after Richard Weigle, the eighteenth president of St. John’s College.

The pond, home of the charming koi, provides a serene oasis in the middle of campus.

EVANS SCIENCE LABS (ESL) ESL houses science labs and computer labs, IT services, and a population of Axolotl—Mexican salamanders or “water monsters” that the freshmen get to know in lab. (The St. John’s hockey team is called the Fighting Axolotl.)

THE GRASSY KNOLL A spot to study, hold classes, visit with friends, or sleep in the sun.

THE POND PLACITA This central location is both meeting place and thoroughfare.

GREENHOUSE

Built with the adobe bricks saved when the college dismantled the original greenhouse building, the Greenhouse was created by the class of 2010 as a scenic spot for students, close enough to walk to and far enough away to feel like you’ve gotten away.

LOWER DORMS All of the dorm buildings at St. John’s are small, housing just 10–20 students each. Most of the single dorm rooms are in the Lower Dorms.

The Lower Dorms used to be the province of women only and are named after the nine muses

The Graduate Institute includes a liberal arts program that is structured much like the undergraduate Program but leads to an MA. The Santa Fe campus also offers an Eastern Classics Program. The GI enlivens the diversity on campus by attracting students of all ages from all walks of life.

THE STUDENT ACTIVITIES CENTER The Student Activities Center is home to personal fitness equipment and athletic facilities including a full-size gymnasium, weight room, and two racquetball/squash courts, as well as shower and locker rooms. Three tennis courts, a soccer field, a 1/8th-mile track, and a nine-hole disc golf course are located nearby.
