In triumph let thy faithful servants rejoice, rejoice and take their rest.

COLLECT

All powerful and everliving God, turn our weakness into strength: as you gave the martyrs of Papua New Guinea the courage to suffer death for Christ, give us the courage to live in faithful witness to you.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FIRST Reading

Zephaniah 3.14-20 Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! The Lord has taken away the judgements against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival. Thanks be to God. Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection.

Romans 8.33-39 Who will bring any charge against God’s elect?

It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.’

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

For the word of the Lord.

SUNDAY NOTICES Welcome This morning we welcome the Rev’d Lu Piper as guest preacher at our 9.00am and 10.30am services. Rev’d Lu is an Honorary Assistant at St Luke’s, Mosman.

Retiring Collection As we observe the feast of the New Guinea Martyrs today, the monthly retiring collection will be offered toward the work of the Vivian Redlich Teachers’ College, Papua New Guinea. Please give generously to the collection, which will directly support improvements of literacy rates in PNG.

Anglican Historical Society The Anglican Historical Society (Diocese of Sydney) will present a talk

by Roy Williams on ‘An Under-Rated Legacy: Australia’s Debt To Christianity, 1788-2015’, at 1.30 pm on Saturday 5 September at the City RSL Club (565 George St., down from the Cathedral).

Roy Williams is author of the recent book, Post-God Nation: How religion fell off the radar in Australia – and what might be done to get it back on (HarperCollins).

Anglicans Together Another very successful annual dinner was held on Friday 28 August. The address by Bishop Stephen Pickard on “Religion and Violence: Myth and Reality” was most enlightening and challenging. Surplus Pianos The parish currently has two upright pianos currently housed in the hall that are surplus to requirements. Parish Council has resolved to put the pianos up for sale. Rather than advertise these externally, we wondered whether there are any parishioners who would like to make a generous offer (one which we could not refuse because of its generosity) Stained Glass Windows for the purchase of either of the pianos.

SUNDAY NOTICES the polycarbonate screens previously installed, trap humidity and pollution, which cause the windows to deteriorate.

As seen with the east window, mesh screens will have the disadvantage of casting a shadow in direct sunlight. In other light, however, their effect will either be neutral or it will enhance the windows that have been covered by polycarbonate screens, which have turned opaque.

We are setting up arrangements to make donations to this project tax-deductible.

Several authorities or organizations are involved in that process, which has made it slower than we hoped.

Tax-deductibility should be in place soon, at which time we look forward to the support of our ever generous parishioners and friends in maintaining this precious part of the heritage of Christ Church St Laurence.

Parish Trivia Night The Annual Parish Trivia night will take place in the parish hall Friday 25 September, 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start. Tickets may be purchased after the services as of next week. If you wish to reserve a table of eight, please contact the parish office. All funds raised from the evening will be in aid of the Factory Community Centre (Waterloo), and the table which proves itself the wisest will win a handsome dozen of mixed wines! Other fabulous prizes and plenty of entertainment will be available on the night. If the ‘practice’ question below is intimidating, do not worry - trivia is a team sport, two minds are better than one, eight minds are better than two, so get a table together for what promises to be an enjoyable evening.
