CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE Railway Suare, Sydney Consecrated 1845

WELCOME TO CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE Today we gather to celebrate the 170th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Parish Church of Christ Church St Laurence. Dignified liturgy and fine music have dominated the life of this parish since its earliest days. An annual Solemn High Mass with orchestra has been a high point in the liturgical calendar here for the previous 38 years. In this significant and historic anniversary year, we are greatly honoured to welcome the Archbishop of Sydney, The Most Rev’d Dr Glenn Davies as the preacher and presiding bishop in the liturgy. We are also delighted to welcome a number of political and community leaders to this momentous occasion. In comparison to his other orchestral works, Beethoven’s Mass in C (which had its premiere on this very day, September 13, in 1807) is rarely performed, having never captured the public’s attention in the way that the Missa Solemnis or symphonic works have. However this beautiful work is undeserving of neglect and we are fortunate to hear it today in a liturgical setting. Beethoven’s Masses, like Haydn’s and Mozart’s before him, were not written to be sung as concert pieces, but as music to contribute to an act of Christian worship. Ludwig van Beethoven is remembered as a political radical who embraced the ideals of the Enlightenment. Less remembered, however, is that he was still a devout and religious man, whose private letters (particularly at times of ill-health) reveal a deep faith in God’s presence in his life, and a strong trust in God’s purpose for him. A report of the first performance of Beethoven’s Mass in C suggests that ‘the performance was inadequately prepared’. We are fortunate that Christ Church St Laurence is greatly blessed with a dedicated team of musicians who are unwavering in their dedication and determination to prepare music to the highest standard, which is presented here week by week to the Glory of God. We thank our Director of Music, Organists and Choristers for all that they contribute to the ongoing life of the parish. As beautiful and majestic as the music we offer here may be, it is not offered as a musical performance. Rather, it is an act of worship, intended to inspire and draw us closer to God. As the Mass is not performed as a concert, there is no charge to attend. However, I invite you to offer financial support, as you are able, recognising that the musical tradition in this church is precious and must be preserved for future generations. With every blessing, Fr Daniel Dries Rector, Christ Church St Laurence

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD The people sit for the readings from scripture. FIRST READING 1 Kings 8.22-24, 27-30 Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands to heaven. He said, ‘O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and steadfast love for your servants who walk before you with all their heart, the covenant that you kept for your servant my father David as you declared to him; you promised with your mouth and have this day fulfilled with your hand. ‘But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, much less this house that I have built! Have regard to your servant’s prayer and his plea, O Lord my God, heeding the cry and the prayer that your servant prays to you today; that your eyes may be open night and day towards this house, the place of which you said, “My name shall be there,” that you may heed the prayer that your servant prays towards this place. Hear the plea of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray towards this place; O hear in heaven your dwelling-place; heed and forgive.’ For the word of the Lord. = + Thanks be to God. PSALM 122 1. I was glad when they said to me: ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’ 2. And now our feet are standing: within your gates, O Jerusalem; 3. Jerusalem which is built as a city: where the pilgrims gather in unity. 4. There the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord: as he commanded Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord. 5. There are set thrones of judgment: the thrones of the house of David. 6. O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: may those who love you prosper. 7. Peace be within your walls: and prosperity in your palaces. 8. For the sake of my kindred and companions: I will pray that peace be with you. 9. For the sake of the house of the Lord our God: I will seek for your good. CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE Railway Square, Sydney

7

SECOND READING 1 Peter 2.4-10 Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, Like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture: ‘See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’ To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner,’ and ‘A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall.’ They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy For the word of the Lord. = + Thanks be to God. The organist improvises while the Gospel procession is made ready. The people stand when the Celebrant stands. When the procession is ready, the acclamation is sung by the choir. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION = Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. + Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. = ‘In my house,’ says the Lord, ‘the one who asks always receives, the one

who searches finds; the one who knocks will always have the door opened to him.’ (Matthew 7.8)

+ Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

‘Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!’ Now when Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.

THE CREED The people remain seated. The choir sings the Creed. Confiteor unum baptisma in remissionem peccatorum. Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum,  et vitam venturi sæculi. Amen.

We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only son of God, eternally begotten of the Father. God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father: through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from Heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit, and the virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again, in accordance with the scriptures. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,  and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The people stand. THE PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL The prayers are led from the lectern. After each prayer, the following is sung:

The final prayer is for those who have departed this life, and concludes: =  Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord, + And let light perpetual shine upon them. The following is then recited on a monotone:

= Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.

+ Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE PENITENTIAL RITE The deacon reads the invitation to confession. The people kneel. Merciful God, + Our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Archbishop pronounces the absolution: = Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith:  pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. + Amen. (William Harris 1883-1973)

Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and the Spirit of God dwelleth within you; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are: for the love of whom ye do this day celebrate the joy of the temple with a season of festivity. Alleluia. antiphon, Dedication of a Church, Sarum rite COMMUNION HYMN NEH 208 In our day of thanksgiving one psalm let us offer

(St Catherine’s Court)

1. In our day of thanksgiving one psalm let us offer For the saints who before us have found their reward; When the shadow of death fell upon them, we sorrowed, But now we rejoice that they rest in the Lord. 2. In the morning of life, and at noon, and at even, He called them away from our worship below; But not till his love, at the font and the altar, Had girt them with grace for the way they should go. 3. These stones that have echoed their praises are holy, And dear is the ground where their feet have once trod; Yet here they confessed they were strangers and pilgrims, And still they were seeking the city of God. 4. Sing praise, then, for all who here sought and here found him, Whose journey is ended, whose perils are past: They believed in the Light; and its glory is round them, Where the clouds of earth’s sorrow are lifted at last. William Draper (1855-1933)

After communion, a period of silence is kept. The people stand when the ministers do so. POST-COMMUNION SENTENCE ‘He who serves me follows me,’ says the Lord, ‘and where I am my servant will also be.’ Alleluia. ( John 12.26) THE DISMISSAL The priest intones a closing prayer, after which the congregation responds on a monotone: + Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. The Archbishop pronounces the blessing. God bring you to the home that Christ prepares for all who love him; God give you the will to live each day in life eternal; God grant you the citizenship of heaven, with his blessed and beloved and the whole company of the redeemed; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. + Amen. The deacon pronounces the dismissal.

FINAL HYMN NEH 206 Christ is our corner-stone 1. Christ is our corner-stone, On him alone we build; With his true saints alone The courts of heaven are filled: On his great love Our hopes we place Of present grace And joys above.

(Harewood)

2. Oh, then with hymns of praise These hallowed courts shall ring; Our voices we will raise The Three in One to sing; And thus proclaim In joyful song Both loud and long That glorious Name.

3. Here may we gain from heaven The grace which we implore; And may that grace, once given, Be with us evermore, Until that day When all the blest To endless rest Are called away.

from the Archives THE CONSECRATION OF CCSL Wednesday 10 September 1845

Almost six years after he laid the foundation stone, the Bishop of Australia, William Grant Broughton, consecrated the newly completed Christ Church St Lawrence on Wednesday 10 September 1845 at 11am. The day itself was the 33rd birthday of the incumbent of the parish, William Horatio Walsh. He was joined in the crowded church by 22 other Sydney clergy. It was the first episcopal consecration of an Anglican church within the bounds of the relatively new City of Sydney. The text of the Bishop’s sermon was Jeremiah 31:23: “The Lord bless thee, O habitation of justice, and mountain of holiness”. The choir boys appeared in surplices for the first time in NSW. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that “the singing and chanting was of a very superior description” and that “the greater part of the congregation could never have had an opportunity of hearing sacred music performed so effectively before”. [The Bishop wrote: “I have heard objections stated to some of the arrangements in the celebration of divine service, as savouring of novelty and innovation; but I am bound to say that there is no contrariety in any part of the practice to the most approved usages of the Church of England, with which I have been familiar from my earliest years; and everything is marked by such a degree of order and solemnity, that I could wish the observances of this church to be taken, if it were possible, as a model for the imitation of every church in my diocese.”] Others took a different view of the proceedings. One letter to the editor complained “a stranger might well doubt whether he was in a Protestant church at all”. Image: Detail of the cover of the Bible used at the consecration service.
