SENTENCE
Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for Jesus’ sake will find it. (Matthew 10.39)
COLLECT
O God, the light of the minds that know you the life of the souls that love you, the strength of the thoughts that seek you: help us so to know you that we may truly love you, and so to love you that we may fully serve you, whose service is perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
FIRST Reading
1 Kings 2.1-2,6-14 When David’s time to die drew near, he charged his son Solomon, saying: ‘I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, be courageous. Act therefore according to your wisdom, but do not let his grey head go down to Sheol in peace. Deal loyally, however, with the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your table; for with such loyalty they met me when I fled from your brother Absalom. There is also with you Shimei son of Gera, the Benjaminite from Bahurim, who cursed me with a terrible curse on the day when I went to Mahanaim; but when he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I swore to him by the Lord, “I will not put you to death with the sword.” Therefore do not hold him guiltless, for you are a wise
man; you will know what you ought to do to him, and you must bring his grey head down with blood to Sheol.’ Then David slept with his ancestors, and was buried in the city of David. The time that David reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned for seven years in Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established. Then Adonijah son of Haggith came to Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother. She asked, ‘Do you come peaceably?’ He said, ‘Peaceably.’ Then he said, ‘May I have a word with you?’ She said, ‘Go on.’ For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection. At Solemn High Mass, the choir sings the psalm.
PSALM 77
1. I call to my God, I cry out toward him : I call to my God, and surely he will answer. 2. In the day of my distress I seek the Lord, I stretch out my hands to him by night : my soul is poured out without ceasing, it refuses all comfort. 11. I will declare the mighty acts of the Lord : I will call to mind your wonders of old. 12. I will think on all that you have done : and meditate upon your works.

Mass Readings 13. Your way, O God, is holy : who is so great a god as our God? 14. You are the God that works wonders : you made known your power among the nations; 15. By your mighty arm you redeemed your people : the children of Jacob and Joseph. 16. The waters saw you, O God, the waters saw you and were afraid : the depths also were troubled. 17. The clouds poured out water, the heavens spoke : and your arrows darted forth. 18. The voice of your thunder was heard in the whirlwind : your lightnings lit the world, the earth shuddered and quaked. 19. Your way was in the sea, your path in the great waters : and your footsteps were not seen. 20. You led your people like sheep : by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
Second reading
Galatians 5.1, 13-25 For freedom, Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another. Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit 4
desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Alleluia. Speak, O Lord, your servant is listening; you have the words of everlasting life. Alleluia.
Gospel
Luke 9.51-62 The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; but they did not receive him, because his face was

Mass Readings set towards Jerusalem. When his disciples James and John saw it, they said, ‘Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?’ But he turned and rebuked them. Then they went on to another village. As they were going along the road, someone said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’ To another he said, ‘Follow me.’ But he said, ‘Lord, first let me go and bury my father.’ But Jesus said to him, ‘Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.’ Another said, ‘I will follow you, Lord;
but let me first say farewell to those at my home.’ Jesus said to him, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’ This is the gospel of the Lord, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

John Keble This year is the 150th anniversary of the death of John Keble (1792-1866). A noted scholar, a gifted preacher, a devoted pastor, and the most widely read poet of his day, Keble is something of an Anglican saint. He was an influential figure in the Oxford Movement, which launched the Catholic revival within Anglicanism in the 1830s. At Evensong on 3 July and 10 July there will be short addresses on Keble’s poetry and sermons by Dr Anthony Miller in place of the sermon. On 17 July, Oxford Movement Sunday, the preacher at Evensong will be the Rev’d Dr Gregory Seach, Warden of Wollaston Theological College in the Diocese of Perth.
