SENTENCE
O Emmanuel, our King and Lawgiver, the desire of all nations and their salvation: Come and save us, O Lord our God.
COLLECT
Gracious God, you have visited your people and redeemed us in your Son: as we prepare to celebrate his birth, make our hearts leap for joy at the sound of your word, and move us by your Spirit to bless your wonderful works. We ask this through him whose coming is certain, whose Day draws near, your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
FIRST Reading
Micah 5.2-5a The Lord says to his people: But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labour has brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall live
secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; and he shall be the one of peace. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection. At Solemn High Mass, the choir sings the Psalm.
SONG OF MARY
1. My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord: my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, 2. Who has looked with favour on his lowly servant: from this day all generations will call me blessed; 3. The Almighty has done great things for me: and holy is his name. 4. God has mercy on those who fear him: from generation to generation. 5. The Lord has shown strength with his arm: and scattered the proud in their conceit, 6. Casting down the mighty from their thrones: and lifting up the lowly. 7. God has filled the hungry with good things: and sent the rich away empty 8. He has come to the aid of his servant Israel: to remember the promise of mercy,

Mass Readings 9. The promise made to our forebears: to Abraham and his children for ever.
Second reading
Hebrews 10.5-10 When Christ came into the world, he said, ‘Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; in burntofferings and sin-offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, “See, God, I have come to do your will, O God” (in the scroll of the book, it is written of me).’ When Christ said, ‘You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings’ (these are offered according to the law), then he added, ‘See, I have come to do your will.’ He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. And it is by God’s will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Alleluia. I am the servant of the Lord: may his will for me be done. Alleluia.
Gospel
Luke 3.1-6 The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leapt for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.’ This is the gospel of the Lord, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
OFFERTORY SENTENCE
Lord may the power of the Spirit which sanctified Mary the mother of your Son, make holy the gifts we place upon this altar.
COMMUNioN SENTENCE
The Virgin is with child: and shall bear a son, and she will call him Emmanuel.

Mass Readings COMMUNION MOTET A spotless rose (Herbert Howells, 1892-1983) A Spotless Rose is blowing, Sprung from a tender root, Of ancient seers’ foreshowing, Of Jesse promised fruit; Its fairest bud unfolds to light Amid the cold, cold winter, And in the dark midnight. The Rose which I am singing, Whereof Isaiah said, Is from its sweet root springing In Mary, purest Maid; For through our God’s great love and might The Blessed Babe she bare us In a cold, cold winter’s night. 14th century, anon. translated by Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878)

Parish Office opening hours The Parish Office will be closed on Monday 28 December and Friday 1 January. Fr Daniel will take a short period of leave between 28-30 December, and Fr John will be on leave 31 December-10 January. Stained Glass Restoration Our appeal for the stained-glass protection and restoration project has received remarkable support, for which we are most grateful. This support has encouraged us to expand the project to include cleaning the windows. Cleaning was part of the project as originally planned, but the Heritage Grant we received did not cover this and we reluctantly dropped it. Cleaning will both enhance the windows visually and protect against deterioration. The cost of expert non-invasive cleaning, exterior and interior, together with
The Community of St Gabriel With the Rector’s encouragement, the Southern Highlands congregation has ‘rebranded’ itself, in the hope of establishing a stronger local identity. Effective immediately, the congregation will be known as ‘The Community of Gabriel - A ministry of Christ Church St Laurence, Sydney’. The Community of St Gabriel will continue to meet at the Uniting Church Chapel, Mittagong on the first Saturday of each month at 11am. Sydney parishioners are always warmly invited to join them. St Gabriel’s school in Waverley in Sydney had for a long time a very close association with CCSL and the boarders at the school came regularly to CCSL for High Mass, filling one side of the church! St Gabriel is also held in great affection by the (Anglican) Sisters of the Church religious order.
