SENTENCE

The redeemed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing; and everlasting joy shall be upon their heads. (Isaiah 51.11)

BLESSING OF AN ALTAR FROTAL

At Solemn High Mass a new altar frontal is blessed. The frontal is the gift of Peter Crawshaw and Robert Hannan, and is given in loving memory of CCSL parishioner, Louis William Lodge (obiit 22 March 2007). The people remain standing.

O God, you give light to the blind and comfort to the sorrowing, and in your Son you have given us a High Priest who has offered the true sacrifice for us and yet can sympathise with us in our weakness: hear the cry of your people and lead us home to our true country, where with your Son and the Holy Spirit, you live and reign, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

FIRST Reading

Our Help is in the name of the Lord. Who has made heaven and earth. The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Rector continues – Let us pray. Almighty God, who taught Moses your servant, during forty days, to make ornaments and linen hangings for the service of the ministry, and of the Tabernacle of Witness: be pleased to +bless, +hallow and +consecrate this cloth made for the adornment and enfolding of the altar of your most glorious Son, Jesus Christ Our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Solemn High Mass continues with The Asperges.

Job 42.1-6, 10-17 Job answered the Lord: ‘I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. “Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?” Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. “Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you declare to me.” I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.’ And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job when he had prayed for his friends; and the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before. Then there came to him all his brothers and sisters and all who had known him before, and they ate bread with him in his house; they showed him sympathy and comforted him for all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him; and each of them gave him a piece of money and a gold ring. The Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning;

Mass Readings and he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand donkeys. He also had seven sons and three daughters. He named the first Jemimah, the second Keziah, and the third Keren-happuch. In all the land there were no women so beautiful as Job’s daughters; and their father gave them an inheritance along with their brothers. After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his children, and his children’s children, four generations. And Job died, old and full of days. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection. At Solemn High Mass, the choir sings the Psalm.

PSALM 34

1. I will bless the Lord continually: his praise shall be always in my mouth. 2. Let my soul boast of the Lord: the humble shall hear it and rejoice. 3. O praise the Lord with me: let us exalt his name together. 4. For I sought the Lord’s help and he answered: and he freed me from all my fears. 5. Look towards him and be bright with joy: your faces shall not be ashamed. 6. Here is a wretch who cried, and the Lord heard me: and saved me from all my troubles. 7. The angel of the Lord encamps round those who fear him: and delivers them in their need. 8. O taste and see that the Lord is good: happy are they that hide in him!

Second reading

Hebrews 7.21-28 This one became a priest with an oath, because of the one who said to him, ‘The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest for ever”’— accordingly Jesus has also become the guarantee of a better covenant. Furthermore, the former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office; but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues for ever. Consequently he is able for all time to save those who approach God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he has no need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people; this he did once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints as high priests those who are subject to weakness, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect for ever. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia. Our Saviour Jesus Christ has done away with death, and brought us life through his gospel. Alleluia.

Mass Readings As Jesus and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Jesus stood still and said, ‘Call him here.’ And they called the blind man, saying to him, ‘Take heart; get up, he is calling you.’ So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ The blind man said to him, ‘My teacher, let me see again.’ Jesus

said to him, ‘Go; your faith has made you well.’ Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way. This is the gospel of the Lord, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

OFFERTORY SENTENCE

Lord, give me life according to your word: that I may know your commands.

COMMUNioN SENTENCE

We will rejoice in the victory of God and make our boast in his great name.

COMMUNION MOTET The Secret of Christ (Richard Shephard, b. 1949) For a long time I have held my peace, but now will I speak. I will lead the blind in a way they know not, in paths that they have not known I will guide them. I will turn their darkness into light, and I will not forsake them. And he showed me a pure river of the water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God; and on either side of the river was there a tree of life, and the leaves of the trees were for the healing of the nations. Help us, Lord, to persevere in prayer with minds awake and thankful hearts, that we may share the secret of Christ with those we meet on our earthly pilgrimage, following in the steps of Jesus, our master and our friend. Amen.

SOLEMN REQUIEM MASS 6pm MONDAY 2 NOVEMBER Preacher Setting Motets

Fr Daniel Dries Requiem in D-flat (Walter Vale: first Australian performance) Bring us, O Lord (Harris); In paradisum (Fauré) Sung by the Choir of Christ Church St Laurence

About the setting of the Requiem Mass Dr Walter Sydney Vale (1875-1939) was Director of Music at All Saints’ Margaret Street from 1907 to 1939. He composed a number of anthems and hymn tunes and edited a Plainsong Psalter following study at Solesmes Abbey (this Psalter still often being used at CCSL Evensong). His Requiem was written in 1908 but was not published until 1938, though it had been regularly performed in the meantime. It enshrines Vale’s three most notable musical influences: Eastern Orthodox and Gregorian Chant, held in a fine amalgam of English Romanticism. It is set for a “double” chancel choir in eight vocal parts, covering a range of nearly four octaves from the “Russian” bottom D-flat bass notes, to the solo soprano’s top B-flat. Some of the more English aspects of the Mass slightly anticipate the later writing of Sir William Harris (1883-1973) whose exquisite setting of Donne’s famous text Bring Us O Lord God, also in the lush “dark” key of D-flat, is being included as the Communion motet. Vale’s is probably the first English setting of the Requiem Mass since the Reformation, and was undoubtedly not without controversy in 1908 when performance of such works would have been proscribed in most Anglican parishes. It is also presumed to be the first setting of this liturgical text in English (other than the Kyrie Eleison), using BCP and English Missal translations. As well as being almost certainly the first time the work has been performed in Australia, it is possibly its first performance outside London. Thanks for this are due to former CCSL chorister Daniel Mitterdorfer, who returned to an original score in the British Library for this careful new edition by Crescendo Music Publications. - pdgj
