SENTENCE

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s son, full of grace and truth. John 1.14

COLLECT

O God, glorious and faithful, you reveal the beauty of your face to those who seek you with a sincere heart: strengthen us in the faith to embrace the mystery of the cross, and open our hearts to its transforming power, so that, clinging in love to your will for us, we may walk as followers of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Afterwards all the Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; but whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would take the veil off, until he came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his face was shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection. The psalm is sung at Solemn High Mass.

FIRST Reading

Exodus 34.29-35 Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke with them.

PSALM 99

1. The Lord is king, let the nations tremble: he is enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake. 2. The Lord is great in Zion: he is high above all nations. 3. Let them praise your great and terrible name: for holy is the Lord. 4. The Mighty One is king and loves justice: you have established equity, you have dealt righteousness and justice in Jacob.

Mass Readings 5. O exalt the Lord our God: and bow down before his footstool, for he is holy. 6. Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among those who call upon his name: they called to the Lord and he answered. 7. He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud: they kept to his teachings and the law that he gave them. 8. You answered them, O Lord our God: you were a forgiving God to them, and pardoned their wrongdoing. 9. O exalt the Lord our God: and bow down towards his holy hill, for the Lord our God is holy.

Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practise cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God.

Second reading

Gospel

2 Corinthians 3.12-4.2 Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit. 4

For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia. This is my Son my beloved in whom is all my delight: listen to him. Alleluia.

Luke 9.28b–36 The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, ‘Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three

While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, ‘This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!’ When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.

OFFERTORY SENTENCE

Lord, by the transfiguration of your Son make our gifts holy, and by his radiant glory free us from our sins.

COMMUNioN SENTENCE

When Christ is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

This is the gospel of the Lord, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

COMMUNION MOTET O nata lux Thomas Tallis (c1505-85)

O nata lux de lumine Jesu Redemptor saeculi, dignare clemens supplicum laudes precesque sumere.

O light of light, by love inclined, Jesu, Redeemer of mankind, with loving-kindness deign to hear from suppliant voices praise and prayer.

Qui carne quondam contegi dignatus es pro perditis, nos membra confer effici tui beati corporis.

Thou who to raise our souls from hell didst deign in fleshly form to dwell, vouchsafe us, when our race is run, in thy fair Body to be one.

from the Archives CCSL’s HILL ORGAN (125 years) The London firm of organ builders, Hill and Son, built CCSL’s organ for 21-yearold Robert Thomas Belmore Andrews. The organ was ordered in 1891 and shipped in 1892 at the cost of £900. Its first Sydney destination was Andrews’ 300 seat private concert hall attached to his modest home - a twostorey terrace, “Frog Hollow”, in Norton Street, Leichhardt. After CCSL’s original Holdich organ of 1844 was destroyed by fire on 18 August 1905, the church purchased Andrews’ organ for £1,000. As early as 21 October 1905, the churchwardens, sidesmen and choristers drove out to Leichhardt to hear the CCSL organist, William Bigg, give a recital. The recital opened with the “Death of Nelson”, it is reported, “in honour of the day the British Empire was celebrating, and closed with the National Anthem [God Save the King], in the singing of which all present joined”. The organ was used for the first time at CCSL when the church reopened on Easter Eve 1906. Its original position was on the floor in the north east corner of the church. In 1912, it was moved to the elevated platform it occupies today to make way for the St Laurence chapel. [Image: The organ in its original Australian home, the concert hall at “Frog Hollow”. ]
