St Luke’s News / Autumn 2018
Hello from our Chairman Contents I have been Chairman as St Luke’s for 18 months now and as we continue to celebrate our 30th birthday, the future looks bright!
I am excited about how our service may change in the future to meet the increasing needs of our local community. We continue to provide a wide range of high quality care and are discussing with partners where our next priority for service development should be, such as caring for people in their own home.

This new service will enable us to take a community approach to end of life care, which means that people who choose to spend their final days at home can still receive St Luke's care. You can read more about this on page 6.

Our supporters, volunteers, sponsors and patrons continue to give enormous amounts of time and effort, and our fundraisers identify ever more imaginative schemes to raise much needed funds. We have a great team here at the Hospice and I look forward to working with everyone in the coming months as we develop services and plans for a positive and productive future. Thank you as always for your ongoing support, without you we simply would not be here.

The Christie
at St Luke's
F
ridays are starting to look a bit different here at St Luke's and we couldn't be prouder! The Christie has extended its outreach services for Cheshire patients by launching a new chemotherapy clinic at the Hospice. The new service was introduced in June and means that more cancer patients can access its first class chemotherapy treatment closer to home, treating up to 15 patients every Friday. The first person to experience this new service is Fiona from Sandbach, who is being treated for metastatic breast cancer. “This new chemotherapy service at St Luke's has made an enormous difference to me. Previously I had to travel a long distance for treatment at The Christie in Withington which can be tiring and take hours out of your
day. It takes me only 15-20 minutes to get to this new clinic and in turn gives me more time to spend with my family!” Our Matron, Wendy Wilson, also explained, “We care for cancer patients every day at St Luke’s and see first-hand the strain that travelling to The Christie for treatment can have on them. Chemotherapy is a draining process, so when you’re facing this alongside a commute to Manchester it can be overwhelming and exhausting. “To be involved in hosting this Christie chemotherapy outreach clinic at St Luke’s is an honour for us and will make an enormous difference to those living with cancer in our community and their families.”
If you would like to find out more the Christie chemotherapy service at St Luke's please contact the satellite chemotherapy outreach team on 0161 918 7654.

Handing over after 30 years
O
ne of our longest serving members of staff retired in July after 30 years at St Luke’s.
Dr Kate Smith dedicated her career to improving end of life care for local people and has touched the lives of thousands of families during her career. She joined the Hospice as a volunteer doctor supporting Day Hospice patients when St Luke’s first opened its doors back in 1988. Two years later she was appointed Medical Director and spent the rest of her career caring for patients and supporting their families. Dr Kate, pictured above with St Luke's Patron Rosie Spiegelberg MBE, said:
4
"I feel very privileged that I have been allowed into peoples’ lives at possibly the most vulnerable and difficult times they will have known, and been able to be alongside them. St Luke’s has been a great place to work, where the team is like a family and I know I will miss it. However, the opportunity for relaxation will not last very long because I’m going to be a granny in November, and I expect I’ll be wondering how I ever found the time to work!"

Our patients remain in expert hands
W Graham.
e’ve said farewell to Dr Kate, but our patients remain in the caring hands of Dr Andrea
Dr Andrea has worked at St Luke’s since 2000 and took over as Medical Director from Dr Kate two years ago. The mum of three, who has also trained as a solicitor, leads our team of doctors and is now looking at ways in which St Luke’s can evolve in the future to serve the community even better. “The challenge as St Luke’s enters its fourth decade will always be in demand because we only have a limited number of beds.
“
We want to try to help as many people with life limiting illnesses as we can, whether that’s for years or the last few months of their lives.
“I also think more and more people will want to die at home, so we need to look at ways of supporting people to die in their preferred place whether that be here at the Hospice, at home, or a nursing home - and ensure their carers and loved ones are also supported. “People think of the Hospice as the beds, but we are so much more than that. What we need to do is broaden our approach even further, which we have been doing with our befriending scheme, complementary therapies, counselling and social work."

St Luke’s News / Autumn 2018
5 minutes with Matron Wendy Wilson
Q
How long have you worked at St Luke’s?
Since January 2014. Before then I’d worked for 20 years in the local community as a district nurse, and then the last seven years in a combined role of district nurse team leader and community matron. I was based at Shavington but worked in the whole area that St Luke’s covers. The majority of my work in the community was in palliative and end of life care, and this has turned out to be a great basis for my role as Matron here at the Hospice.
Q
Why did you want to work for St Luke’s?
I already knew a lot about St Luke’s from living and working in the community, and had always admired the work of the Hospice. In 2012 I was approached by the then Matron, Siobhan Horton, and asked if I would consider applying to become a trustee as they were looking for somebody with a clinical and palliative care background. I was incredibly honoured to be asked. Then I saw this role and put my application in. I was absolutely ecstatic when I got the job! Coming to work here I just felt I had this precious jewel to look after; it’s a huge responsibility to hold something and want it to carry on for other people, because
6
it means so much to the community it serves.
Q
What is the role of Matron at St Luke’s?
The title Matron means a lot to people, but they do tend to think of Hattie Jacques from the Carry On films or someone on a ward who is really stern! For me the word matron just means safety; it means keeping somebody safe. I’m only the third matron here since St Luke’s first opened, following in the footsteps of Edith Reeves and Siobhan Horton, and I feel incredibly honoured to be in this role.
If you would like to work for St Luke's please keep your eye on our website which advertises all paid and volunteer posts, www.stlukes-hospice.co.uk/jobs

Q
Have you seen many changes at St Luke’s since you started work here?
Yes lots. When I joined a lot of nurses were reaching retirement, so we have had a whole new nursing team. But despite that change and lots of new members of staff, it was lovely to hear from the new nurses how welcome they have been made to feel. We're one big family here and everyone is just so thrilled that in this job they can give the nursing care they have always wanted to give. We also have more doctors working with us which is fantastic for our patients.
Q
What has been the highlight of your time at St Luke’s?
It is hard to pick just one really. When I see families arriving at the Hospice with their loved one they look so nervous, but then you see a drop in their shoulders as they start to relax because they realise they can trust us. For me that is such a huge highlight to working here everyday. I’m also constantly touched by the thank you cards and comments made by the relatives and friends of patients, they are so lovely.
want to die, it is normally at home. So I think that should be our focus. The person who is dying is often less anxious and has less symptoms when they are surrounded by familiar things. Sometimes it’s enough for someone to be in familiar surroundings, with soft music playing, or if their home is normally a loud place, that it carries on being that. So I think the future for St Luke's is doing more in the community to enable this.
Q
Tell us something that a lot of people don’t know about you?
I keep sheep! At the weekends my husband and I farm rare-breed sheep. We currently have about 40 sheep and I’ve had lots of escapades with them, shearing them and rounding them up when they’ve escaped! We had 11 lambs this year and watching them grow has been delightful. It may sound like a lot of hard work to have a farm but we love it!
Q
St Luke’s has celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. How do you see the Hospice moving forward in its 4th decade? I think it will be more community focussed. People live their lives at home, so when you ask them where they would

We’re not what Isobel expected
L
ast year we had the pleasure of supporting 55-year-old Isobel Browne from Crewe through her battle with breast cancer. Isobel received counselling here at the Hospice after undergoing a mastectomy and chemotherapy. Here’s her story:
“
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2017. I think it all happened so fast that I didn’t have the chance to really take it all in. It wasn’t until afterwards that it really hit me. When it came to the name St Luke's I was very naïve; I’d always thought a Hospice was a place for people to die, I didn’t know about all the other services. So when the nurse referred me for counselling I thought ‘why would I go there, that’s for people who are on their death bed.’ Coming here has been a real eye opener and I think it’s just marvellous the range of
8
services that St Luke’s provides. It was certainly a life saver being able to talk through my feelings and thoughts about having cancer. I was thinking lots of negative thoughts and my counsellor at St Luke’s helped me to turn it round and see things in different ways. I used to feel so down and so scared about everything, but after having the counselling session I would almost skip back to the car. I’ve finished my counselling now but it’s a nice comfort to know that St Luke’s is always there for me." To say thank you, Isobel climbed Ben Nevis with her husband Ed in July raising more than £400 for St Luke’s.
Donations and fundraising enable us to care for people like Isobel, if you would like to support us there are lots of different ways you can help, visit www.stlukes-hospice.co.uk to find out more.

Say hello to some of our Hospice Heroes Each year thousands of people do something incredible to raise money for St Luke's. From simple dress down days at school to ultra marathons, there are so many ways to support our local Hospice. Here are just a few of the many people raising money for St Luke's whom we fondly call Hospice Heroes! A gruelling 1,000 mile bike ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats pushed Jennifer Snelson’s fundraising total to £10,337.39! The Middlewich hairdresser completed her latest challenge for St Luke’s in just 14 days during July’s blistering heatwave. “When I found out I’d hit the £10,000 mark I was just overwhelmed and really emotional. I can’t believe I’ve done it to be honest. It’s given me a great sense of achievement. Thank you to everyone who has supported me! I think I’ll take a year off but then I’ll be looking for my next challenge for St Luke’s!”
Cliff Dickenson Ford dealership in Winsford has once again been a driving force for our fundraising. Sponsoring our Bubble Rush and donating a brand new Ford Ka+ for our Summer Super Draw, Chris and the team certainly go the extra mile for St Luke's. 12
Thank you to Denise and Graham Kettle for organising ‘Party in the Lane’ in Nantwich for the last three years. They are brilliant supporters of ours and have raised over £3,000 for St Luke’s. Thank you to all the bands and to 12-year-old Charlie! One of our youngest supporters, 7-year-old Emily James, took on our £30 in 30 days challenge and gave up chocolate for a whole month. She raised an incredible £90 which has funded four complementary therapy sessions. Well done Emily!

A girls’ night in raised an incredible £386 for our Hospice, thanks to organiser Jenny Boffey from Sandbach. She invited 25 friends, who have in some way been touched by cancer, for a Mexican night. Jenny served chilli, fajitas and cocktails and in return asked for donations to St Luke’s. She also held a raffle thanks to prizes donated by local shops. Jenny said: “It was a really good night, plenty of laughing and fantastic company! The treatment I received at St Luke’s in 2015 was amazing, it’s a very special place. I will never forget how big a part it played in my recuperation, so many thanks.”
A group of year 7 boys at Brine Leas School in Nantwich took on our £50 Schools Challenge. A ‘strawberries and cream’ sale during Wimbledon and a penalty shoot-out during the World Cup helped them turn their £50 start-up capital into £109.75 profit! Wow! High fives for 8-year-old Lily Downing from Hartford who had her waist length hair cut into a bob and raised more than £400 for our Hospice. She also donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust which provides real hair wigs to children who have sadly lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses. We love Lily’s new hair style and think what she has done is simply amazing!
35 friends and family completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge in memory of Mike Rathbone this summer. They climbed Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent raising more than £3,700 for our Hospice. Well done and thank you to Dan Ward who organised the fundraiser!
Rosie Hetherington completed the Manchester 10K with her partner Sam in memory of her Mum, raising more than £660. "St Luke's Hospice is an amazing place. It was the final place that my mum was sent to before she passed, and the staff did everything they possibly could to give my Mum the best treatment and support, as well as making me and my Grandma feel like we were at home.” Well done Rosie – your Mum would be so proud.
Congratulations to Simon and Tess Harrison who were married this summer. They raised £1,633.80 for St Luke’s at their wedding reception by putting on a free bar for their guests and asking for donations in return. What a generous way to start married life! 13 3

Volunteering gives me a
great sense of satisfaction
E
ach day, hundreds of people visit St Luke's charity shops in towns across mid and south Cheshire. Our shops are popular with customers because of the excellent quality of donations we sell, our approach to stock rotation and of course our friendly customer service. Mainly staffed by volunteers, our shops turnover more than £1million each year to raise money for the Hospice. To find out more we caught up with Nantwich shop volunteer Heather Fell, pictured. "I was really keen to add some structure to my week once I'd retired, so when I saw that St Luke's offered volunteering opprotunities I knew it was for me, and now I'm helping in the shop two mornings a week! "I really enjoy working here and meeting new people who come into the shop. As part of my role I serve customers, replenish stock and change the displays. "There is such a friendly atmosphere and we get lots of lovely donations coming in - I'm even partial to buying the odd thing or two! "Volunteering gives me a great sense of satisfaction and I feel as though I am doing something good by helping a local cause too."
14
“
Volunteers like Heather are a huge asset to our charity shops - we simply couldn't do it on our own. Every volunteer is welcomed with open arms! And whether you can help for three hours a week or more, we are so grateful for any support you can give."

Remembering St Luke's
in your Will
D
id you know the most wonderful gift you could ever make to support St Luke’s won’t cost you a penny in your lifetime? After taking care of your loved ones, consider leaving a gift to St Luke’s in your Will. A gift of just 1% of your estate will make a real difference to supporting the care we provide in the future. Gifts in wills allow people who are approaching their final days to spend them pain free in a caring, respected and safe place. They make sure we can continue supporting local people from the moment they are told they have a life-limiting illness. And they enable us to support people in their homes for as long as they need us. You too can do this.
What the future holds… In the future doctors and nurses are going to get a lot better at treating illness and new treatments will be developed to combat disease. But ultimately, we will all reach the end of our life one day. And despite the changes and breakthroughs we will see in the future, we all still deserve to be treated with dignity, respect and love when our final days arrive. Your legacy can help us do this. Your legacy is St Luke’s future. For some informal guidance of the ways you can remember St Luke's in your Will call 01606 555813 or visit www.stlukes-hospice.co.uk/gifts-inwills

Make a Will Week
A
Will might be the most important document you ever write, so why are you still putting it off?
Having an up to date Will is incredibly important, no matter what your age or health. Not only does it ensure that your estate and belongings are distributed according to your wishes, you can also use it as a way to specify more personal preferences, such as arrangements for your children or details for your funeral. From 8-12 October 2018, we'll be holding our annual Will Week, during which local solicitors kindly donate their time and
expertise to support the charity. In return for a donation to the Hospice, during Will Week you can get your Will written and the solicitor will waive their usual fees. By taking part in Will Week, you can ensure you and your family’s future is secured whilst making a valuable contribution to the St Luke's. Please, don't put it off. For a full list of participating solicitors please visit our website, www.stlukes-hospice.co.uk/willweek or call 01606 555813.

Light up a Life
J
oin us on Sunday 25th November at St Luke’s for our annual Light up a Life service as we remember those special to us.
We understand Christmas can be a particularly difficult time when someone we love has died, and we know how important it can be to do something in their memory. This year we once again invite you to dedicate a light on our tree which will be lit at our Light up a Life service. Lights will shine in memory of hundreds of people who are loved and missed by their family and friends, and will remain lit until Twelfth Night. You can also share a personal message which will hang on the Christmas tree inside the Hospice. You can dedicate a light at www.stlukes-hospice.co.uk/lightupalife or call 01606 555813.
