Generosity Believe what you do makes a difference. Because it does. 2018 St. Luke’s Foundation Annual Report

Grateful for life’s unexpected heroes Generosity can come from the most unexpected places. For instance, Stephen Benda. Born and raised in Cedar Rapids, never moving from the house he grew up in, Steve led a quiet, unassuming life. But when he realized he was losing his battle with cancer, Steve reached out to the Foundation to talk about his legacy. Stephen Benda, like so many of our patients, was grateful for the compassionate care he received from the doctors, nurses and other caregivers in our UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s family. His generous gift of $3.8 million—one of the largest in St. Luke’s history—will make a huge impact in the lives of our patients and their loved ones. And through this gift, the name of Stephen W. Benda will live on for generations to come. The same can be said of Viola Reth, a former St. Luke’s nurse and teacher who passed away in 2017 at the age of 92. Viola’s gift of over $500,000 includes an endowment for a scholarship to help St. Luke’s continue to attract the best and brightest nursing students. And there are so many other gifts, large and small, from grateful patients, current and former team members, and friends of St. Luke’s, that make it possible for the Foundation to support the hospital in giving the health care we’d like our loved ones to receive. On behalf of everyone at the St. Luke’s Foundation, we salute the unexpected heroes—our friends and neighbors whose generosity is making a difference in our community. We are grateful for each and every one of you. We are also delighted to welcome Michelle Niermann as President and CEO of UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids. Michelle has been a member of our St. Luke’s family for more than 25 years and we look forward to helping her reach her goal of continuing to transform UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids into the pre-eminent health care system in the Midwest.

The Millionaire Next Door No one would ever guess he was a millionaire. Stephen W. Benda lived quietly in the modest Cedar Rapids house he grew up in. For years he went about his work at IBM every day. He liked helping kids as a volunteer at local elementary schools. And his vacations were usually solitary trips—driving out west to camp, hike and take photographs of the beautiful mountains he loved. Benda was only 67 in the fall of 2017, when he learned he had advanced esophageal cancer. With time running out, he wanted one last chance to make a difference in the world. Now Benda’s gift of $3.8 million will help patients and caregivers at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s for years to come. “We are honored to receive Stephen Benda’s generous gift,” says St. Luke’s Foundation President Mary Klinger. “He wanted to give back and helped us identify areas where he would make the most impact.” The hospital laboratory, has now been named the Stephen W. Benda Laboratory, which was chosen because it reaches so many people. “Almost everyone treated at St. Luke’s uses lab services such as blood tests,” explains Klinger. In addition, the rehabilitation gym at the UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Helen G. Nassif Transitional Care Center, now under construction, will become the Stephen W. Benda Gym and a new pocket park on the west end of St. Luke’s campus will be Stephen W. Benda Park.

“The park relates to his love of hiking and the outdoors,” says Benda’s cousin, Howard Samek. “The rehab center is fitting because it helps people get strong enough to go home and going home was Steve’s dying wish.” With help from cousins Rick and David Samek and the medical team at St. Luke’s, they were able to make Steve’s last wish come true. “Steve was so grateful for everything St. Luke’s did for him,” recalls Rick Samek. “He decided to donate his money to them because of the wonderful care he received there.” Photographs taken by Benda will be displayed at St. Luke’s as part of the Foundation’s Healing Power of Art program. “Beautiful images like these contribute to the healing process in body, mind and spirit,” says Klinger. “Research shows artwork can help reduce pain and stress, shorten hospital stays and improve the patient experience.” Adds David Samek, “Instead of spending money on himself, Steve saved every penny so he could make a difference some day. The Foundation is honoring that by making sure his gift benefits others. I think he would be very proud.”

Planned gifts leave a lasting personal legacy of support for exceptional, compassionate health care. Whether you’re considering a gift to a specific area of St. Luke’s or to the hospital as a whole, St. Luke’s Foundation will work with you, your family and your advisors to create a plan that meets your goals. Honoring a Life of Caring Viola Reth’s life was based on providing loving care to others. Now Reth’s legacy of caregiving will live on through her generous gift to the St. Luke’s Foundation. Viola was born on the family farm, graduated from Delhi High School and became a teacher. She earned a master’s degree in special education so she could teach the children she felt needed her most. Later, after graduating from St. Luke’s School of Nursing as a registered nurse, Viola gave her patients her loving care. And when her mother was in poor health, Viola was her devoted caregiver. Viola Reth passed away in 2017 at the age of 92, after a life well-lived. In her will, she saw to it that her estate would continue to help others, including making a bequest of more than $500,000 to St. Luke’s Hospital. “Viola always wanted to help people,” recalls her sister, Irene Curtis. “She wasn’t a person of means but she was extremely frugal. She chose to give to St. Luke’s to help others have a healthy life.” Some proceeds from Viola’s estate have already been used towards an endowment to recruit and retain registered nurses at UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids. “Because of Viola’s dual career as a teacher and a nurse, a scholarship for nursing students felt like a good fit,” says Mary Klinger, St. Luke’s Foundation president. The endowment establishes scholarships for the RN Intern-to-RN program. “The talent pool for nurses is more limited than our current needs are,” explains Carmen Kleinsmith, chief nurse executive for UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids. “We’re competing with clinics and other hospitals for today’s best and brightest nursing students. We believe if these students experience St. Luke’s through 6 | 2018 Annual Report

our intern program, they’ll see we have something special and choose to stay. This new scholarship helps make that possible.” Mary says the scholarship is similar to the Foundation’s Keech Scholarship, which funds St. Luke’s RN-toBSN program. “That scholarship is funded by a trust established almost 50 years ago from the estate of Dr. Roy K. and Bess Keech so young people could pursue a nursing education to help others,” says Klinger. “With this gift from Viola Reth, we can attract the best nursing students for decades to come.” Mary notes the Foundation will use the remainder of Viola Reth’s gift to advance health care in our community in other ways. “My sister was a very loving and caring person,” says Irene Curtis. “Through this gift, she continues to help others.”

Endowment gifts help sustain programs, services and scholarship funds like the RN Intern-to-RN program. To support an existing endowment or learn how you can create a new one, call (319) 369-7716.

Taking Pride in Giving Back “St. Luke’s has been a part of my life,” says Paul Hagen, information technology training project manager at UnityPoint Health. “I was born here, my kids were born here and my granddaughter was born here.”

Paul Hagen, Information Technology Program Manager

For Paul, a UPH employee for 35 years, there is a sense of satisfaction in giving back to an organization that has given him so much. “The Bible says to whom much is given, much is expected,” Paul says, explaining why he uses payroll deduction to support the annual iCare employee giving campaign. “I’ve been very fortunate over the years. Donating to St. Luke’s Foundation helps me help others.”

Kathryn Kaufman, MD, a pediatrician with UnityPoint Clinic, agrees, “It’s a privilege to be able to give back to St. Luke’s.” Last year, Dr. Kaufman directed her iCare donation to the Reach Out & Read program that provides books to youngsters at annual well-child exams. “The program encourages parents to help develop their kids’ language skills by reading to them. It’s very rewarding to see how my contribution directly benefits my patients.” Dr. Kaufman, who joined UnityPoint Clinic in 2017, adds, “I’ve talked to my fellow providers and we share a positive attitude about giving back to the organization. It feels good to know our dollars are being put to good use.” Last year, the employee giving campaign generated $350,000 to help the St. Luke’s Foundation support UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids in giving the health care we’d like our loved ones to receive. But the generosity of St. Luke’s team members extends beyond the iCare campaign. Jen Oltmanns, manager of health information services, says her team is passionate about giving. “Each year we designate a charity as a challenge to the staff,” explains Jen. “Our goal is 100 percent participation, regardless of the individual amount you give. Last year we raised $700, which we divided between St. Luke’s Child Protection Center and the Linn County Veteran Affairs food pantry.” Department member Tami Howe adds, “It’s a great way to give, plus it brings the group together. We don’t all work in the same room, but we can all work toward a common goal.” Other giving activities for the department include Christmas in July and making non-monetary donations to organizations, including pet food for the animal shelter and supplies for Waypoint Domestic Violence Center. The team also enjoys competing against larger departments when it comes to their giving efforts. “We’re a small department that doesn’t always get a lot of recognition,” says Jen. “But when we pull together, we make a bigger impact. We really take pride in being able to make a difference.”

Committed to Our Community New Leader Manufacturing (NLM) has been building world-class equipment in Cedar Rapids since 1939. Today, owners Matt Rissi and Rocki Shepard remain committed to staying in the community for one simple reason. “Cedar Rapids is a great place to be!” explains Rocki, NLM president and CEO. “The community supports us and we support the community.” That support includes a long-term relationship with UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Foundation. “NLM has been an excellent partner with us going back for decades,” says Foundation President Mary Klinger. “They’ve given more than $69,000 to us since 1979. When we have a need, they are always willing to step up.” Past projects supported by NLM include $50,000 to help build St. Luke’s Inpatient Hospice Unit in 2013, as well as contributions to LifeGuard Air Ambulance, the Child Protection Center, and the Foundation’s Children’s Health Fund. Most recently, NLM provided the funds to produce St. Luke’s 2019 Healing Power of Art calendars. “When St. Luke’s Foundation approached us about the calendars, they explained how the hospital is using artwork to contribute to the healing process and improve the patient experience,” says Rocki. “We thought that was a unique concept and were very happy to support it.” She adds, “I can’t say enough about the wonderful people at St. Luke’s. When the Foundation comes to us with a project that’s close to their hearts, whether it’s the Inpatient Hospice Unit or the Healing Power of Art, we work with them to help them accomplish their goals.” NLM also encourages its own employees to give back to the community, including offering a Time Off program 8 | 2018 Annual Report

to make it easy for individuals to volunteer. “We firmly believe it’s important for everyone to give back, whether through their time, talents, or treasures,” explains Shepard. “Our employees are proud of the relationships we have with local organizations like St. Luke’s.” In 2019, in recognition of NLM’s 80 years in business, the company has announced its 3-80 initiative, supporting different causes in the I-380 corridor by donating $80,000 before the end of the year. “Celebrating your birthday is always fun,” Shepard says. “Celebrating it by giving back to the community who helped you get where you are is special.” As for the partnership with St. Luke’s, Rocki looks forward to many more years of working together. “We’re glad our support helps the Foundation achieve its goals. We’re honored to be able to support St. Luke’s in helping make Cedar Rapids a great place to live!”

When it comes to childhood behavioral problems, early intervention is key to long-term results, says Craig Meskimen, manager of children’s specialty services at UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids. “Children’s brains are still developing through the first five years of life,” Craig explains. “Research suggests changes made then are more likely to have a lasting impact.” That’s one of the underlying principles of TIES, the early-intervention parenting program that targets children 18 months to five years of age. TIES (Teaching Interventions to Empower and Strengthen Families) is free to participating families, thanks to a grant to UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Foundation from Early Childhood Iowa.

Craig Meskimen, Manger of Children’s Specialty Services and Sara Nightingale, TIES Program Coordinator enjoying the TIES celebration.

“Outside of the parents themselves, no one has been more important to us than the Foundation,” says Craig. “This program is 100 percent grant-funded. The Foundation helps us get the grant each year and they’re always here to support us.” TIES takes a unique approach to early childhood behavior modification. In addition to the professional staff, parents who have completed TIES are on hand to help other parents learn positive parenting skills. “You learn it. You practice it. You teach it,” explains Carol Meade, director of behavioral health services at UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids. The program is free for parents but requires a strong time commitment, with two two-hour sessions every week for five months. The results, Craig says, are “magic.” He adds, “It’s very data-driven. We help parents set goals for behavior and track the results. Well over 85 percent of our parents accomplish their goals.” Carol agrees. “We hear from parents all the time who tell us how much TIES has helped. We give people strategies that empower them to be better parents and enjoy their children more.” Carol says participants come from all walks of life and include experienced parents as well as first-timers. Some of the children have developmental delays or are on the autism spectrum, while others are what Carol calls highly spirited kids. “There’s no behavior too small or too large,” she says. “We accept them all.” TIES recently celebrated its tenth anniversary with a party for current attendees and past graduates. “It was uplifting to see families we worked with 10 years ago,” recalls Craig. “One of the toughest kids I ever worked with was there. Now he’s in high school and doing great! That’s really what TIES is all about.”

TIES is one of many children’s services St. Luke’s Foundation supports. For more information on how you can help kids in the Cedar Rapids area, call (319) 369-7716.

Celebrating Wellness for Life The Jane Borg Cook Cancer Wellness Program at Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center is celebrating 10 years of helping patients move beyond cancer to embrace wellness for life. The program, most of which is free for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers, has been made possible through the generous support of donors, led by the families of Jane Borg Cook and Karma Smith. Friends who became leaders in Cedar Rapids before being diagnosed with cancer, these women shared a belief in the power of wellness. After Smith lost her battle with colon cancer in 1998, her husband Marty established

an endowment through the St. Luke’s Foundation. “Karma believed mind and body wellness would foster healing,” explains Marty Smith. “I wanted to help St. Luke’s become more active in that area.” UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s began offering exercise services to cancer patients with Marty’s support. But the program really took off with the establishment of the Jane Borg Cook Cancer Wellness Program in 2009. “Marty Smith got the ball rolling with the initial concept,” says Rob Cook. “After my wife, Jane, lost her life to breast cancer, my family and I decided to push it a little further.” Rob talked with St. Luke’s Foundation representatives and Kimberly Ivester, director of cancer services, about their goal for a wellness program that would provide exercise, nutritional and psycho-social support for patients and survivors. “Jane was able to live a good life despite her cancer by integrating wellness into her lifestyle,” recalls Rob. “But insurance often won’t cover those things. I asked what it would take to make the services free. My children and I agreed to make the lead gift of $75,000.” Longtime St. Luke’s Foundation Board Member Terri Christoffersen adds, “It was wonderful of Jane’s family to do this in her honor, and what a tremendous gift for our community! No matter where you’re receiving cancer treatment, you can come to the Cook Cancer Wellness Center along with a family member or caregiver.”

Grow Happy Event

In 2013, the Cook Cancer Wellness Program moved into the new Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center. Services now include open gym, classes like pilates, yoga and tai chi, nutrition help, and integrative therapies from meditation and massage to medical acupuncture. Recent additions include aromatherapy, creative art and Grow Happy horticulture sessions. “My sons and I are proud of what is being done in Karma’s memory,” says Marty Smith. Rob Cook adds, “I’m glad we can continue to make these services available at no cost. I know it’s what Jane would have wanted.” The Cook and Smith families are among the many partners who share Nassif Community Cancer Center’s commitment to surrounding patients and caregivers with the resources they need. Team Breast Friends helps empower cancer patients with emotional support and hope. Patty Frantz, treasurer for the Iowa City chapter, explains, “The Community Cancer Center’s mission is our passion, too. We both want to make every breast cancer patient’s journey as comfortable as possible.”

Your gift helps ensure Nassif Community Cancer Center and the Cook Cancer Wellness Center will continue to bring the healing power of wellness to cancer patients and their loved ones. Call (319) 369-7716 today.

“We know our donation to the Community Cancer Center helps provide services not covered by insurance,” says Patty. “Together we’re making an impact on breast cancer patients’ lives every day.”

Honoring Stanley’s Guardian Angels Cassie and Phil Hartgrave thought they had worked out all the details in advance of their second child’s birth. Then little Stanley decided to make his appearance five weeks early. “It came as a major shock,” admits Cassie. “Fortunately everyone at St. Luke’s was so reassuring. They let us know they would do everything they could to take care of me and our little one.” Dad agrees it was nerve-wracking. But Phil says, “Because we both work for UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids, we know what great care they take of babies and that helped us rest easy.” Phil and Cassie welcomed Stanley with the help of a dedicated team of professionals. Once their son was safely home, the grateful parents decided to thank everyone who ensured their unexpected birthing journey went smoothly. The Hartgraves made a Guardian Angel donation to recognize 31 individuals involved in Stanley’s care, from physicians and nurses to team members in housekeeping, dining services, and the lab. Through the Guardian Angel program, patients and families can show their appreciation for UnityPoint Health team members, doctors, or volunteers who made a difference in their health care experience.

“Cassie and I believe in the mission and values of UnityPoint Health and the great things St. Luke’s Foundation does,” explains Phil. “We gave a Guardian Angel donation after our first son’s birth, too. In both cases, the care we received went above and beyond— not because we work here but because that’s what UnityPoint Health people do.”

Kathie Manderscheid, manager of St. Luke’s Birth Care Center, says, “It was especially nice to see key players who are so important behind the scenes get recognized. Regardless of your role here, we are all committed to treating people the way we want our loved ones to be treated.” One member of Stanley’s birthing team was Anesthesiologist Muayyad Tailounie, MD. “Dr. Moe” assured Cassie she and her baby were in good hands. “I genuinely care about each patient and I think they feel it. I told Cassie we have a great team and we will do everything to help you through this.” He adds, “Receiving the Guardian Angel award reinforces the reason I went into medicine, which is to help people and make a difference in their life. To have someone recognize that and appreciate it, for me that is the light at the end of the tunnel!”

You can express your appreciation to the caregivers who made a difference for you, while making a meaningful impact on St. Luke’s ability to provide quality care. For more information on the Guardian Angel program, contact Jennifer Sweeney, Annual Giving director, at (319) 369-7807.

A Legacy of Leadership Ted Townsend never set out to run a health care system. He started his working life as a high school English teacher, with dreams of writing the great American novel. But life had other plans for Townsend, who retired in December 2018 after 39 years in health care, including almost 17 as president and CEO of UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids. His retirement gift turned out to be much more meaningful than a traditional gold watch. Friends, colleagues, physicians, UnityPoint Health employees, and community members raised $60,000 to establish the Ted Townsend, Jr. Endowed Scholarship fund through St. Luke’s Foundation. “Our hope was to reach $10,000,” recalls William Prowell, chair of St. Luke’s Hospital board of directors. “The fact we raised so much more is a tribute to Ted and the things he achieved here.” The annual scholarship will be awarded to qualifying UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids team members to help them enhance their education, career, and/or leadership skills. The endowment ensures it will be funded in perpetuity. In addition, St. Luke’s Auxiliary has created the Ted Townsend/St. Luke’s Auxiliary Leadership Award—an annual $1,000 award to recognize an outstanding UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids team member who embraces Townsend’s spirit of transformational leadership. “I’m truly touched,” admits Ted. “It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized in this way for whatever contribution I was able to make during my time at St. Luke’s.”

Ted’s contributions were considerable. He helped build UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids into an integrated health system with a full continuum of care, from hospitals and clinics to home health and a full range of inpatient and outpatient behavioral health. And under his leadership, St. Luke’s Hospital earned national recognition, including IBM Watson’s Top 100 Hospitals and Becker’s Hospital Review’s 100 Great Hospitals in America multiple times. Other highlights include the establishment of the Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center and St. Luke’s Nassif Radiation Center. “But the most lasting thing he has done,” says William, “is to build a culture of engagement among St. Luke’s team members, which is what you need if you’re going to win awards for patient care and performance improvement. That’s the way Ted operates. He fully engages people and great things naturally come from that.” Ted is amazed by the scope of the endowment and thrilled it will allow him to continue to play a role in the development of future leaders at UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids. He adds, “I fell in love with the organization and the people during my time here. It’s something I will always value.”

2018 ST. LUKE’S FOUNDATION

Rural Healthcare Grants St. Luke’s Foundation awarded the first Rural Healthcare Grants in 1980 to Mechanicsville Fire and Urbana Ambulance. Since then, the Foundation has awarded more than $375,000 in matching grants to support emergency medical services in Benton, Cedar, Delaware, Iowa, northern Johnson, Jones and Linn counties. In the 1990’s the Foundation created the Rural Healthcare Endowment through corporate and individual donations. St. Luke’s associates also contributed their 199596 “I Care – The Employee Giving Campaign” to the endowment. Most recently, the Foundation had three additional endowments established to benefit the Rural Healthcare Grant Program: • In 2004, the Mary Beulah and Florence Usher Endowment • In 2009, the Benton-Linn Rural Healthcare Fund • In 2016, the Terry L. Smith Endowment Community members can help support St. Luke’s Rural Healthcare Grant by giving contributions of any amount. Additional gifts build the endowment and helps fund even more rural health care needs.
