Making an Impact In a matter of weeks, our lives have changed dramatically. We are now trying to balance our new normal which includes homeschooling our kids, attempting to work from home and the inability to see our loved ones while we practice social distancing. The anxiety and stress remain high as we work our way through this worldwide pandemic. Even though today’s world is much different, we continue to celebrate our generous supporters and the impact you’re making on our community. That’s what this Impact Report is all about. Highlights from the last few months and the transformative power of a single gift can change the lives of patients, their loved ones, even the donors themselves. We want you to know UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital and Foundation remain strong. And with your help, we continue to support our doctors, nurses and technicians on the frontlines of the fight against COVID-19. Your commitment to our patients and the community is appreciated beyond words. We care about YOU. Be well and stay safe. With gratitude, Mary Klinger President UnityPoint Health - St. Luke’s Foundation Michelle Niermann President and Chief Executive Officer UnityPoint Health - Cedar Rapids
• UnityPoint Clinic Express opened in Hiawatha - featuring a time-saving process that aims to get patients in and out in less than 30 minutes!
Making the Future of Health Care Possible An open access medical technology and learning lab, generate @ UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids was created in partnership with Boston-based MakerHealth. The new lab offers a dedicated space within the hospital for access to world-class tools that can be used to create and fabricate the future of healthcare devices. In addition, two satellite labs are based at Witwer Children’s Therapy locations in Cedar Rapids and Hiawatha. Nurses, physicians, team members—even patients and community partners—can use the lab to transform their ideas for improving patient care into prototypes that will be tested and reviewed for implementation. The lab was made possible by a $500,000 gift from the estate of Viola Reth. St. Luke’s Foundation president Mary Klinger calls the lab’s blend of education and nursing the perfect tribute to Viola, a former St. Luke’s nurse and teacher. Mary adds, “We believe this innovative project is a perfect way to honor Viola and her legacy. Her generous gift truly made it possible.” Endowment gifts help sustain programs, services and scholarship funds like the new learning lab, generate @ UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids. To support an existing endowment or learn how you can create a new one, call (319) 369-7716.
Employee giving tops $350,000! We Give Because We Care Every day our UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids team members and medical providers give of themselves to ensure every patient gets the health care we want our loved ones to receive. And every year our extraordinary UnityPoint Health family gives in another way to meet the health care needs of our community. In 2019, physician and team member donations, including generous support of the WeCare employee giving campaign, totaled $359,849. These individuals chose to give because they believe in making a difference. They also know that 100 percent of their dollars go to the programs and services they choose. WeCare contributions fund iGrants that support innovative programs and equipment; nursing scholarships; and donations to important community partners like United Way and Variety the Children's Charity. Donations to WeCare come from team members throughout the UnityPoint Health family, including St. Luke’s Hospital, UnityPoint Clinics, Jones Regional Medical Center, and AbbeHealth. As Jen Oltmanns, manager of Health Information Services says, “When we pull together, we make a bigger impact.” Together we are stronger, and our community is healthier. For more information on the WeCare campaign and other giving opportunities for members of our UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids family, contact Jennifer Sweeney at (319) 369-7807.
Guardian Angel Program: A Heartfelt Thank You Jonathan Klein has a lot to be thankful for. A loving wife, four children, his mother, eight siblings—plus the dedicated team at UnityPoint Health - St. Luke’s who saved his life. Jonathan arrived at St. Luke’s ER shortly before midnight on July 6, 2019. Tests quickly revealed a 99 percent blockage in his left anterior descending (LAD) artery—a blockage commonly known as the “widow maker.” But fortunately for Jonathan, St. Luke’s accredited Chest Pain Center was ready with the care he needed. The team immediately restarted his heart and used a stent to open his blocked artery. Later Jonathan recalled, “For the next two days, I was cared for and treated so well. Such quality people! Everyone I encountered, from the chaplains to the technicians, was top-notch. And my exceptional care continued with the cardiac rehab team.” In September, Jonathan chose to express his gratitude with a Guardian Angel gift. Through the Guardian Angel program, patients and families can make a donation in appreciation of a UnityPoint Health physician, team member, volunteer or department, with the money going to fund programs and equipment that add to the quality of care at UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids. Jonathan recognized his exceptional caregivers from the ED, Intensive Care, Spiritual Care, Cardiac Rehab and Cardiology. Jonathan told them, “If you ever wonder if your work matters or if you made a difference, call me.”
You can express your appreciation to the caregivers who made a difference for you, while making a meaningful impact on St. Luke’s ability to provide quality care. For more information on the Guardian Angel program, contact Jennifer Sweeney, Annual Giving director, at (319) 369-7807.
Nursing Honor Guard Ready to Pay Final Tribute Nursing is more than a profession. It’s a calling. And when the final call to duty has sounded, the nurses of UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids have one last mission to perform. The Nursing Honor Guard is the final tribute you can give to a nurse who dedicated her or his whole life to caring for others. The Honor Guard consists of active and retired St. Luke’s nurses who attend the final services of fellow nurses who have passed away. Clad in the traditional cape, white uniform and cap established by Florence Nightingale more than 150 years ago, the Honor Guard pays homage to women and men who committed their lives to the nursing profession. The Honor Guard is available to perform nursing traditions at a visitation, funeral, or burial. These include serving as honorary pallbearers, reciting the Nightingale Prayer and a special nursing poem, and performing the Final Call to Duty for those who served selflessly and are now going home. If you are a current or retired St. Luke’s nurse or St. Luke’s School of Nursing alumni who is interested in volunteering with the Honor Guard, please call Nursing Services at (319) 369-7215. St. Luke’s Foundation is proud to support the Nursing Honor Guard by supplying roses for the ceremonies. You can donate to the Honor Guard in memory or in honor of a special nurse in your life by calling (319) 369-7716 or visiting unitypoint.org/donate.
A Legacy of Support For 70 years, AbbeHealth Services has been meeting the needs of people facing mental and physical challenges, as well as issues associated with aging. And now a generous bequest will help ensure that AbbeHealth continues to be here for our community. AbbeHealth began in 1949 when Abbe Mental Health Center opened its doors. Today it is the only state-accredited community mental health center in our area. Abbe fulfills its mission by seeing people of all ages with emotional and behavioral health issues get the support they need, when they need it. Abbe also enhances the lives of older adults with services and resources to help them remain independent. In addition, through Abbe’s residential care facilities, individuals who require 24-hour treatment and supervision gain skills to live in the community of their choice. Last year, for the first time in its history, AbbeHealth Services became the beneficiary of an estate. This $300,000 gift will support Abbe’s many programs, with an emphasis on behavioral health services. These include the Mental Health Center; child and adolescent services; individual, family and group therapy; school-based mental health services; outpatient care; and home-based psychiatric nursing. A gift made in your estate plan enables you to support the health of our community for generations to come. For information on how you can create a lasting legacy of support, call (319) 369-7716.
“We Wanted to Give Back” When Dot Hinman’s husband Gene developed health issues that led to multiple stays at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital, the couple knew they were in good hands. “Every aspect was wonderful,” recalls Dot. “We felt like we were being cared for by our kids.” After each stay, Gene wrote thank you letters to the staff. Later, when St. Luke’s Guardian Angel program began, the Hinmans made donations in honor of the St. Luke’s team members who went above and beyond for them. One donation came in 2009 after Dot broke her hip. Gene was unable to be with her in the hospital and Dot admits it was a scary time. But she says, “Everyone was fantastic. One nurse was especially sweet and sat with me so I wasn’t alone.” Their experiences at St. Luke’s also led the Hinmans to volunteer. “We made the Guardian Angel donation, but we wanted to do more to give back,” says Dot. “We had been volunteers with other places, but once we fell in love with St. Luke’s we decided to volunteer here instead.” In addition to volunteer work, the Hinmans began making monthly donations to St. Luke’s Foundation. Dot explains, “We were living on retirement income, so making a big one-time gift wasn’t possible. We were pleased we could set up a monthly contribution.” She adds, “The Foundation has done incredible things through their funding of different projects.” Gene Hinman passed away in 2017, but Dot continues to give to St. Luke’s any way she can. “Gene and I were always so grateful for the care St. Luke’s gave us and our many friends who have come here. We are really lucky in Cedar Rapids to have this kind of health care available.” Every donor makes an impact on the programs and services offered at St. Luke’s Hospital. For information on ways to give, call St. Luke’s Foundation at (319) 369-7716.
