Jones Regional Medical Center

“When you have the need to use the hospital, it becomes a higher priority and you realize how important it is.” CAMMIE GREIF

Paying It Forward Bill and Cammie Greif were asked why they give back to the community. They said, “First of all, we have been incredibly blessed. Our parents helped us when we first started out and we received a few breaks along the way. We worked hard and kept on going. We feel now that we have an opportunity to pay it forward.” When choosing what to give back to Cammie reflected on their life experiences. Bill’s former FFA Instructor at North Linn High School and current Jones County Extension Director, Joe Yedlik was a very positive influence and helped shape him into the person he is today. Bill and I were strongly impacted by our youth 4-H programs and know that our grandchildren will be as well. For those reasons we felt compelled to contribute to the Youth Development Center. When talking about the hospital, she says that our family has used the facility many times and we now realize what an asset it is to have it in our community. “When you have the need to use the hospital, it becomes a higher priority and you realize how important it is. When serious things happen, you think, wow, it is really nice to have this facility and we understand how much it benefits our entire community.” Continued on page 3

FROM THE CEO

We’re Expanding! Who Benefits?

As most of you know, or will know after reading this issue of the Pulse, we are expanding our current facility. The details are highlighted inside this issue. One of the most common questions I’ve been getting has been “Who benefits from this expansion project?” Well, here’s a short list.

“I invite you to view the expansion video on our new website at unitypoint.org/anamosa.” ERIC BRIESEMEISTER CEO, JRMC

Our Patients and families. Access to quality care in a convenient location close to home benefits patients in many ways; it saves time, money and stress. For those who have difficulty driving, or prefer not to, having healthcare provided in our community can simplify the entire process. Emergency Medical Staff and Volunteers. A second entrance will allow ambulances and other emergency vehicles to have a designated entrance, allowing for less congestion in the main entrance for patients, families, and visitors. JRMC Staff, Physicians and Volunteers. The additional space will allow the hospital staff and volunteers to do their job even better, which is caring for our patients and families.

Specialty Physicians. The enlarged specialty clinic space will allow for more specialists to come and see patients at JRMC. Cardiologists, pulmonologists, oncologists and other specialty physicians will have more space to see more patients more often. The entire community. More medical services close to you in a convenient location with high quality care is a benefit to all of the people in our service area. Not only will there be increased access to healthcare, but the positive economic impact of construction is another benefit with this $10.4 million project. I invite you to view the expansion video on our new website at unitypoint.org/anamosa/ expansion-project to hear from our community partners about the benefits from this expansion project. As we embark on this project, I want to personally thank you for your commitment to Jones Regional Medical Center, your patience as we work within the construction project and most importantly, your trust in us to deliver high quality healthcare to you and your family.

Claussen’s Commitment to Serve Others

“ The hospital is a community gem. I feel we should all do what we can to support its mission. ” NICOLE CLAUSSEN

2

The Pulse | Issue 1, 2013

Nicole Claussen volunteers her time to help strengthen the community for her friends and neighbors and, most important to her, for the kids growing up here. She says, “Community roots are strengthened when we work together. I believe in creating as strong of a foundation as possible for the people who make this community their home. Although I haven’t lived there in years, I still feel great pride in my hometown. I want the kids who are growing up here to have that same sense of pride when they are my age.” Nicole serves on a variety of community boards and encourages others to become involved as well. “Everyone has their own, individual strengths and talents and there are many ways in which our community can benefit from them.” She goes on to say that, “It’s about finding the right outlet to best utilize your talents. If people commit to serving others, our community as a whole will benefit. Working together fosters pride and a sense of ownership in what we have. Diversity

of opinions challenges our individual thought processes.” When asked about her involvement with the JRMC Foundation board, she says, “I love taking the opportunity to tell people, both local and outside our community, about JRMC. Having a hospital, that is nationally recognized and rated, is a source of pride for the Jones County area. The hospital is a community gem. I feel we should all do what we can to support its mission. I am so fortunate to be raising my kids in an area where I know quality healthcare is just minutes away; it offers us peace of mind. I am proud to be able to give back to an organization that exists to help the people whom I care about the most in life.” Nicole not only talks the talk, but she certainly walks the walk when it comes to community service. She currently sits on the Anamosa School Board, Jones County Conference Board and Coe College Board of Trustees; she is a member of the Strawberry Hill PTO and serves as a Sunday School teacher and youth coach.

Paying it Forward

The Greifs say that when John Harms, JRMC Board Member, was showing us the opportunities to give to the current Expansion Campaign, we saw that the Cardiopulmonary Rehab area was available to sponsor. We both realize heart disease is prevalent in our families and knowing that Kim Boyd – Cammie’s high school classmate (and still good friend) is the director – it was all a good fit and we knew it was something we wanted to support. With a smile, Cammie says, “I’ve always known Kim with her infectious happiness and realize that she does a great job with the program, we feel really good about being able to support it.” Boyd agrees with her high school classmate, “We have all been blessed, in different ways, and it really takes a village to all work together to make our community stronger. This support means the world to me personally as well as our patients.” John Harms speaks of the Greifs as representing the grassroots of our community. Bill & Cammie believe in a strong work ethic and are willing to support people who put in the blood, Cammie Greif and Kim Boyd share a laugh. sweat and tears to make a difference. Harms goes on to say that when working in a smaller community, when we all work together, there is so much pride that goes into the finished project. Bill comments that, “Hard work is crucial, if you put your mind to something, you can do anything that you want to. We like to support organizations, such as the firefighters, those men are all working other jobs and are involved in the fire department as volunteers – we are happy to have the opportunity to help out with those who are willing to work hard and continue to make things happen.”

AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

Tim Woods is a Respiratory Therapist at Jones Regional Medical Center and is currently pursuing his RN degree, with expectations to graduate in May 2015 from Kirkwood Community College. Auxiliary members left to right: Marilyn Albaugh, Marty Rowland, Mary Jo Hamre, Tim Woods, Betty Norton, Dorothy Postel, and Verlyn Stolte. Bailey Strait, Midland High School, is the daughter of Jamie Strait and the late Chad Strait. Bailey will be attending Wartburg in the fall and plans to study Music Therapy and Music education. Michael Melchert, Monticello High School, is the son of David & Mary Melchert. Michael will be attending the University of Iowa and plans to study Health Sciences. Austin Seehusen, Anamosa High School, is the son of Mike and Dawn Seehusen. Austin will be attending Coe College in the fall and plans to study Athletic Training.

When speaking of the hospital, Harms compliments the entire staff at JRMC and goes on to say that even though bricks and mortar and programming are important, it is the people that make the facility. That is what I hear time after time when I am talking to people about the hospital, it is the care that you receive and the wonderful people inside that really make the difference. Thank You for Your Support! Just four and a half years after opening the doors to a brand new facility, volumes continue to increase at Jones Regional Medical Center and for the 2nd year in a row, we were named one of the Top 40 Fastest Growing Hospitals in the United States by Modern Healthcare Magazine! In 2013 over 57,000 outpatient visits were made, the equivalent of over 150 people per day entrusting their healthcare to the professionals at Jones Regional Medical Center. Perhaps you were one of our patients, whether here for a mammogram, the Rhythm of Life class, a procedure, lab work, physical therapy, as an inpatient, or perhaps an unexpected trip to our ER. If so, thank you! Thank you for trusting us with your health care needs. Our expansion project will allow us to continue to provide quality and convenient healthcare for you, your family and our community. Please consider supporting our expansion project. Together, we can continue to make the Jones County area a place where people can live, work and play and most importantly, maintain good health. All donations will be recognized; gifts of $1,000 or more will be permanently recognized at Jones Regional Medical Center. Naming opportunities are available for gifts of $10,000 and above. Thank you for remembering to put JRMC Foundation in your estate plans. Contact Cali Beals at 319-481-6326 or Sheila Tjaden at 319-481-6118 in the foundation office for more information.

“ We’d like to recognize the Cardio-Pulmonary Staff and thank them for their dedicated, wonderful care and knowledge that they provide to us (and others) enabling us to live a more healthy life in retirement. We will also enjoy a longer, happier life of joy due to their carefree, happy style of teaching and care. We feel privileged to be a part of the rehab “family” and are pleased that more space will be allocated to facilitate care to a greatly expanding clientele.” A GRATEFUL PATIENT

Expansion To Enhance Wound Care Services Being healthy and active are two of life’s greatest pleasures. For people who have wounds that won’t heal because of diabetes or other chronic health conditions, life can lose its enjoyment due to pain, fear and reduced ability to get around. But there is good news – effective treatments can help heal wounds. Jones Regional Medical Center’s Wound Care Service helps patients heal and get back to their regular lifestyle. We are very fortunate to have two physicians who specialize in wound care and treatment at Jones Regional Medical Center. Dr. Kirk Kilburg sees patients every Wednesday morning and cares for all types of patient wounds. Dr. David Hemmes is a Podiatrist who cares for patients with wounds on the foot below the ankle on a weekly basis, usually Tuesday afternoons. All of the nurses have also received specialized wound care training to add to the expertise in caring for the patients. With the expansion project, additional space for all of the outpatient services will be available, providing an opportunity for more patients, including the wound patients, to be cared for. Many wound patients come in with walkers and other equipment that simply takes up space. With the additional space for the wound care team’s prep space and larger treatment rooms, the team will be able to continue to provide the best patient care possible.

In April, two JRMC doctors were recognized at the Spirit of St. Luke’s Awards Ceremony. Dr. Kilburg received the Humanitarian Award for his work in the Wound Clinic and Dr. Butler received the Quality Award and was recognized for several initiatives she has begun at Jones Regional Medical Center. Comments CEO Eric Briesemeister, “Dedication, excellence, service and humility—those are the words I would use to describe Dr. Butler and Dr. Kilburg. It’s an honor to have such dedicated and highly skilled physicians working to make healthcare better in our service area.” 11

Surgical Open a Success!

Wapsipinicon Country Club in Anamosa provided the perfect summer day setting for more than 50 golfers at the 31st Annual Surgical Open on Friday, June 13. The fundraiser, which benefits the Jones Regional Medical Center Foundation, raised nearly $10,000. Darin Sander and Joe Krutchen kept their reign as the champions with a score of 61 in the two-person best shot tournament. The event featured hole contests, flight prizes, a silent auction and raffle. Proceeds benefit surgical equipment to support the continued growth at Jones Regional Medical Center. The upcoming Expansion project will allow additional space to be allocated for surgery and outpatient procedures. With newly funded equipment and the additional space, more procedures will be able to be done locally.
