Jones Regional Medical Center

“ We appreciate the convenience of being able to follow up with that same specialty doctor and staff locally.” AARON & DEB ZUMBACH

Family benefits from JRMC Like many young families, the Zumbachs are busy with school activities, sports events, work schedules and the normal daily tasks associated with keeping up with a busy family. To keep up with their busy life, they also understand that accessible, quality healthcare is essential to ensure that their family stays healthy and has the resources they need when they aren’t quite so healthy. Aaron, Deb and their three children, Kayla, Tyler and Taylor along with their extended family rely on Jones Regional Medical Center for as much of their healthcare as they can. Aaron says that the ease of use and friendly environment experienced at Jones Regional Medical Center is appealing to patients of all ages. “My mother, who is in her upper 80’s, commented to me recently, how user friendly this medical facility is. It is unfortunate that she was in need of the hospital, but it was very fortunate that Jones Regional offers the healthcare she needed. It would be our hope that she is not a regular visitor but it is nice to know if needed she can be.” Taylor, their teenage daughter, recently had surgery on her foot at Jones Regional by Dr. David Hemmes. Deb indicated that it was easy for Taylor to see the foot and ankle specialist here in Anamosa for her weekly follow up appointments. “It was so convenient; if we had to take her out of town on a weekly basis for the follow ups, she would have had to miss school and it would have

FROM THE CEO

“We continue to be grateful to our community, our board of directors, our donors, our staff and our patients and families who entrust us with their healthcare needs.” ERIC BRIESEMEISTER CEO, JRMC

What are we increasing?

Hopefully most of you know by now that our facility is undergoing a major expansion. It’s amazing to me that we’re just 6 months away from completing this project. When we first started this project, I thought it would take “forever” to get finished. Well, looks like “forever” is coming in December of 2015. All of the staff at Jones Regional is excited to be able to give more high quality care, close to home. When we began planning the project, specific goals were established. Here are a few of them and how we are meeting them. Increased access & convenience • Increased the number of specialty clinic rooms from 9 to 18. We can now accommodate up to six specialists at one time, previously the maximum we could accommodate was three. • We’ve added two new machines and a walking track to our cardio-pulmonary rehab area, increasing the square footage by 300%. • Two full size treatment rooms and a bariatric room were added to our rehab therapy department. • We’re adding an infusion area, which is brand new to JRMC, for chemotherapy, blood transfusions, etc.

• Additional parking will be added, right outside the main entrance, with additional handicap spaces. • Our lab is expanding to include three private draw rooms. Increased privacy • In all of the patient care areas, we have chosen to install drywall and insulation all the way to the ceiling instead of just above the drop ceiling. This will decrease noise transfer between patient care spaces and enhance patient confidentiality. • Increased private areas for patient consultations and counseling. • Added doors to therapy treatment rooms. Increased provider convenience & comfort • An open clinic workspace will allow easier communication and collaboration for the patient care teams. • Physician/staff work areas that include natural lighting. Increased energy efficiency • High efficiency lighting • Vestibules in front of all doorways to reduce heating/cooling loss from opening doors. • High efficiency heating/cooling systems As we continue to monitor our expansion and the progress that happens on a daily basis, we continue to be grateful to our community, our board of directors, our donors, our staff and our patients and families who entrust us with their healthcare needs. Yours in Health,

Expanded cardiopulmonary space opened on June 1, 2015. Upon completion, the new space will be 3 times the original size. Therapy windows are still available for sponsorship with gifts of $10,000. Contact the foundation office for more details.

The finishing touches are being put on the new Center for Specialty Medicine, scheduled to open on August 1, 2015.

been much harder to do those necessary appointments.” She was not intimidated at all to have this procedure performed in the community she is growing up in. Aaron comments that from a parent’s perspective, Deb and I appreciate the high level of care provided, the expertise of the doctors and staff providing that care and the convenience of being able to follow up with that same doctor and staff locally. Many other members of the Zumbach family have accessed healthcare at Jones Regional. Deb has had blood work done, and their son, Tyler rolled his ankle in a basketball game last summer and needed an x-ray. In addition, their daughter Kayla, Deb’s nephew and parents and Aaron’s brother, all have been to the hospital here in Anamosa for treatment and follow up. Aaron says that we appreciate the local access for routine healthcare needs and check ups. Aaron goes on to say that taking care of patients is the most important component of our local hospital, however, Jones Regional Medical Center, from a business standpoint, is a draw for our community. It not only

provides excellent healthcare, it provides excellent employment opportunities and targets our area as a destination area for new families. After a recent tour of the hospital, Aaron commented that he was impressed and surprised by the number of healthcare services that are being provided to our community. He has also heard many community members say that when entering the facility they feel more of a home environment rather than that of an institution. This atmosphere and the demand for medical services certainly explains the need for the current expansion project. Jones County, and Anamosa especially, are very fortunate to have UnityPoint Health-Jones Regional Medical Center make such an investment in our community. With the ease of use, friendly environment and diversified medical specialties, Aaron says that if I were to register a guess, we may be only five years away from another expansion project!

FROM THE AUXILIARY PRESIDENT Thank you for your continued support of Jones Regional Medical Center’s Auxiliary. It is my pleasure to announce the awarding of five $500 educational scholarships to some wonderful recipients from Anamosa High School, Midland High School, Monticello High MARY JO HAMRE School, our JRMC staff, and our JRMC AUXILIARY PRESIDENT volunteer program. The funding of these awards came from your generous contributions to our Annual No-Bake Bake Sale. Through our various fundraising events and through several private donations to the Auxiliary we have already contributed $45,000 toward our three year pledge of $50,000 for the hospital’s new expansion project. Our latest contribution to the patients of JRMC has been to purchase medical bags to be given to our inpatients when they are discharged. The bags are designed to allow patients to put all of their medications and directions for follow up appointments in one place so that they can easily bring them along to all of their medical appointments. They seem to be very well received. If you are not already a member of our Auxiliary, I would like to encourage you to join as an “active” member – helping with our various activities and fundraisers. Or you can join as an “inactive” member supporting our efforts through your $5 annual membership fee. The more members we have, the better we can continue to serve our local community hospital. Again, thank you to the dedicated staff here at JRMC; it is a pleasure to be working side by side with you to bring the best health care possible to our area. We are so fortunate!

Scheduled events for the remainder of 2015:

2014 State Amateur Champion, Nate Dunn, from F&M Bank, drives for players on hole #6 for a donation.

Surgical Open a success! Despite the wet conditions, golfers came together at Fawn Creek Country Club to support the 32nd Annual Surgical Open golf tournament on Friday, June 12. The fundraiser, which benefits the Jones Regional Medical Center Foundation, raised nearly $10,000 for the growing surgery department at JRMC. Darin Sander and Joe Kruchten kept their third year reign as the champions with a score of 64 in the two-person best shot tournament. The event featured hole contests, flight prizes and raffle. The expansion project includes additional space for surgery and outpatient procedures. With newly funded equipment and the additional space, more procedures will be done locally. This year’s Surgical Open was presented by Citizens Bank of Anamosa and Tipton, Dr. Michael Warner, DDS and Citizens State Bank of Wyoming, Olin & Oxford Junction. Jay Willems, JRMC Foundation Board Chair and Deb Byers, JRMC Physician Liaison and Surgical Open Coordinator, register golfers before the tournament.

Legacy Society A new way to partner with Jones Regional Medical Center Foundation

Partner today to invest in tomorrow’s health care. Your foresight and generosity can help support the future of health care in our communities – for your family, your friends, and your neighbors. The Legacy Society of Jones Regional Medical Center Foundation will recognize supporters who have invested in the hospital’s future by establishing a legacy gift. Leaving a gift to the JRMC Foundation through your will or estate plan is a special way to leave a legacy to the future of health care in your community. Many people are able to maximize their financial support for a

charity through their estate. By informing us of your decision to include the JRMC Foundation in your estate plans, we are better able to plan for the future, and to recognize you now for your future gift. We invite you to impact the future of health care in your community through a Legacy contribution to the Jones Regional Medical Center Foundation. It takes just a few simple steps to share your commitment to become a Legacy Partner.

Ways to give Cash Bequests

Naming Jones Regional Medical Center Foundation in your will or living trust is one of the most common deferred giving plans. Donors may name JRMC Foundation as the recipient of a specific dollar amount, a percentage beneficiary of an estate, or as the recipient of specific assets.

Memorial Gifts

Requesting that memorial gifts are left to the JRMC Foundation can be a way for many to recognize a loved one.

Appreciated Property / Retirement Plan Stock Assets Donors may be able to take an immediate tax deduction for the full market value of the stock and also avoid the capital-gains tax they would owe by cashing in the securities.

Grain / Agricultural Commodities

By giving a gift of grain, you avoid including the sale of the grain in your farm income. Deducting the cost of growing the crops typically results in saving self-employment, federal, and state income tax. And you can still benefit even if you take the standard deduction rather than itemizing your deductions.

Your traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and 401(k) plan are subject to income tax when funds are passed on, but taxes can be avoided by naming JRMC Foundation as a beneficiary of your retirement account.

Charitable Gift Annuity

This annuity allows a donor to support the Jones Regional Medical Center Foundation by transferring assets into a gift annuity, which allows for an income tax deduction and produces income for you during your lifetime.

Charitable Remainder Trust

A charitable trust with the Jones Regional Medical Center Foundation as beneficiary begins with the transfer of assets, including real estate, cash, or stocks and bonds, to a trust where the assets are invested to pay income to you or another beneficiary. At maturity, the remaining assets are distributed according to your wishes.

Always consult your tax professional for your specific tax benefits.

If you would like to talk with a development professional about including the JRMC Foundation in your estate plans, please contact the JRMC Foundation office at 319-481-6118 or 319-481-6326.

OUR MISSION: To provide quality services in an efficient, costeffective manner and to promote healthy lifestyles to our customers.

Harms reflects on 20 years After serving on the Jones Regional Medical Center governing board for 20 years, John Harms feels good about the future of the hospital and stepping away from the board of directors. He says, “There is a good succession plan in place and I have great confidence in my replacement, the governing board is really going to get a high quality board member with Nicole Claussen.”

“ I couldn’t be more happy and excited for the future growth of the facility.” JOHN HARMS

During his twenty year tenure, many things have changed at Jones Regional Medical Center. Harms reflects that among the most significant was the Critical Access Hospital designation, the alignment with St. Lukes Hospital and the now UnityPoint Health system, and of course, the new hospital being built in the fall of 2009. Harms goes on to say, “Although bricks and mortar have made a huge, visible difference along with the new location of the facility, the future really belongs with the staff. At Jones Regional, the staff really is family here! The atmosphere is so friendly, you feel confident with the knowledgeable staff immediately as you enter the front door or when you are wheeled into the back! I couldn’t be more happy and excited for the future and growth of the facility.” Without the hospital board role, Harms will certainly continue to remain busy as General Manager of the Great Jones County Fair and his board involvement with the Iowa State Fair. He also plans to enjoy some time traveling with his family. He goes on to say “I hope JRMC and the staff can keep me alive for a long time – I still have unfinished business that needs to be done!”

In April 2015, Jones Regional Medical Center was named A Top 100 Critical Access Hospital in the United States by iVantage. “Jones Regional Medical Center is proud of our providers and staff who helped earn this prestigious, national recognition,” says CEO Eric Briesemeister.
