“The scariest part was the thought of not being able to play football during DR. KIRK KILBURG JRMC WOUND CLINIC

my senior year.” LUKE KRAMER

Believing in Healing

DEB BYERS, RN JRMC WOUND CLINIC

For Luke Kramer of Central City, November 30, 2013 was a turning point in his life. He was involved in a farming accident while he was helping with the harvest on his family farm; he slipped and got his leg caught in the head of the combine. “I was pinched in there, my dad reversed it and I got out,” says Luke. After an ambulance ride, several surgeries and over 10 days at larger hospitals, his experience at Jones Regional Medical Center began. His first stop was at the JRMC wound clinic. Luke speaks of his caregivers and says, “Dr. Kilburg, Deb and Laura were especially helpful to me with their advice, words of wisdom and professional opinions when I had tough decisions to make. They always did their best to make it easy on me; they supported me every step of the way. Doctors in the larger hospitals were skeptical that I would ever walk normally again, let alone play football. The caregivers at Jones Regional all believed in me and helped me believe that I could walk, hunt, play football and all the rest of the things that I like to do. The scariest part was the thought of not being able to play football during my senior year.”

Why We’re Expanding

Luke

With severe trauma to his left leg, it was difficult at times to continue to believe that he would be able to walk again, play football, and keep a positive attitude. Shortly after his accident, when he couldn’t walk because of the pain, he had doubts that he would play football again and for Luke, playing football was the biggest motivator to keep going. “The people at Jones Regional were very encouraging; they believed in me and knew that I could do it.”

Most of his treatment was completed last spring, although he still comes back for periodic check ups. Luke says, “I knew I was going to be okay when I got my pain under control and the physical therapy really took off, things started improving and I knew I was going to be able to play football. This realization finally happened and it revitalized my sense of hope because of all of the good things that were happening to me.”

“Deb and Laura continued to encourage me when I came to get my wounds checked. They really treated me like I was part of their family. The care at Jones Regional was warm and caring which made it a lot easier going to the wound clinic. They all have such bright personalities and loving care; they made me want to get better.”

Luke says, “I like Jones Regional Medical Center because I have a continued relationship with the people who took care of me; they are just great people. John, Laura, Deb and Dr. Kilburg were all rock stars in my recovery. When I have appointments there, I still stop in and say hi.”

Luke began working with John Wagner in the physical therapy department and his confidence started to build. Luke says, “I could tell he actually cared about me and was concerned about how I felt.” Luke spent about two months at Jones Regional Medical Center, in both the wound clinic and physical therapy.

Not only was Luke taken care of very well at Jones Regional Medical Center, but he was also supported at home by his family and at school as well. Sheryl Cline, Counselor at Central City High School says, “Luke’s sense of humor is what got him through his recovery over the last year. He is able to keep life in perspective in a great way and his resiliency skills are very mature.” Sheryl works with Luke and other students at Central City High School as

Becker believes in the importance of healthcare

“ ...at the heart of the success of JRMC is an incredibly dedicated and caring staff who really do treat you like family. ” CHARLIE BECKER 2

The Pulse | Issue 1, 2013

The importance of local healthcare is what motivates Charlie Becker to be involved with Jones Regional Medical Center. Charlie has served on the Jones Regional foundation board for over 15 years, the JRMC hospital board for the past five years and in January Charlie took over the JRMC board chair role. With his position at Camp Courageous as the Executive Director and his numerous other community responsibilities, one may ask, “Why spend time being so involved in the hospital?” Charlie’s response is that he continues to think nothing is more important than our health, we can not invest in anything more important than our good health…when you have your health, along with family and friends…you are the richest person. Charlie has been extremely involved in the new hospital and current expansion project, but quickly gives praise back to others. He credits the other board members with exceptional leadership and dedication; they all helped to lay the groundwork for a strong organization.

He also credits the JRMC staff and says, “We are fortunate to have an absolutely incredible, state of the art, medical facility, but at the heart of the success of Jones Regional Medical Center is an incredibly dedicated and caring staff, who really do treat you like a part of their family.” Charlie is excited about the growth and direction that Jones Regional is going. He says, “It was the decision of the board of directors to provide as many health care services locally as we possibly could, while being financially responsible. We found that doctors love to come to JRMC to serve the people of this area. This added to the affiliation that Jones Regional has with UnityPoint Health Cedar Rapids, St. Lukes Hospital and Mayo Clinic, provides our patients the best care in the world, right here in Jones County. It allows our community to receive high quality care in a convenient location, all in an effort for the most important thing, keeping us all healthy.”

Now, almost a year after his injury, he’s back to normal, working on the farm, playing football and being a student at Central City High School and the Jones Regional Education Center. Luke says, “Even though it wasn’t a fun experience, I believe it bettered me as a person to go through it. I guess that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger; it’s given me more resilience to life in general.”

We have several fundraisers each year to raise money for the hospital and its patients/families. Books Are fun came in September and we were pleased with the response from the hospital staff and the public who supported it. We once again hosted the $5 Jewelry Sale in the hospital cafeteria on Monday, November 17. The jewelry and items that sold always make great stocking stuffers and gifts for Christmas, we hope you enjoyed the sale! A special thank you to Amy Speed, JRMC Marketing and Communications Specialist, who has taken some great photos of Jones County and the surrounding area for the hospitals’ Beautification project. The Auxiliary has created greeting cards by selecting 16 of these photos (four different sets of four cards). They are now on sale in the hospital lobby for $5.00 per set. The chicken and noodle luncheon was held on Friday, Nov. 21st and was once again a huge success thanks to the many volunteers who make it possible. Special thanks to all who baked pies and volunteered your time in the dining room or kitchen to make this another great fundraiser. We also work together to make Christmas ornaments to adorn the tree at the Lawrence Community Center on Dec.12, 13 and 14th for the Annual Tree Walk. This year our ornament is made out of used Christmas cards. The talented Glenda Kurth taught us how to make the ornaments again this year. You may buy the ornaments in memory of a loved one who has passed or in honor of someone you hold dear. After they are displayed at the tree walk they will be returned to the person who bought them. It’s a wonderful tradition and yet another fundraiser for the Auxiliary.
