We never cease to be amazed by the generosity of our community

GENEROSITY The remarkable achievements of the past year would not have been possible without the friends and neighbors, physicians, business partners and UnityPoint Health - St. Luke’s associates who give so freely to make a difference in the health and lives of others. From a retired schoolteacher to a successful businesswoman, our donors share a common commitment to helping St. Luke’s give the health care we’d like our loved ones to receive. We know you will be moved, as are we, by the brave men and women who were inspired to turn personal sorrow into new hope for patients and families. Their vision has benefited programs, from St. Luke’s new Ronald McDonald Family Room® to Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center programs and activities for children.

In addition, more than 800 individuals and businesses supported the Foundation’s Campaign for Cancer Care, with contributions of all sizes. Through their generosity, we surpassed our $1.3 million goal and made the Albert G. & Helen Nassif Radiation Center a reality. Coming together for our community made a huge impact in 2015. We are proud to report the generosity of our donors resulted in $2.2 million in gifts to the Foundation. We are proud 100 percent of your gifts benefit the programs or services you choose to support. Now we look to the future and new opportunities to change lives for the better. Our Children’s Services Campaign will help ensure babies and children in our community receive the specialized care they need, when they need it. Other initiatives will support our

Rural Healthcare Grant and Lifeguard programs. And we continue to welcome new members into our Koehler Legacy Society for planned giving. Thank you again to everyone whose giving hearts helped make 2015 a success. We are truly grateful for your support.

Extraordinary Partners in the

Fight Against Cancer Helen G. Nassif and Aegon Transamerica Foundation help make full spectrum of cancer care a reality in Cedar Rapids “Some of us have lived through the cancer experience, some of us have not but one thing is certain, we all have been touched by cancer,” says Terri Christoffersen, St. Luke’s Foundation board chair. One out of every two men and one out of every three women can expect to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. The disease impacts not only patients, but their loved ones as well. Fortunately for patients and families in the Cedar Rapids area, they can face that journey knowing they have access to leading-edge cancer care and support services. UnityPoint Health® – St. Luke’s Hospital’s Cancer Care, Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center, UnityPoint Clinic®, Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa and over 200 independent physicians throughout the region collaborate to provide every patient with the best care available. In February 2015, St. Luke’s Foundation embarked on a $1.3 million campaign to support all cancer services— the

Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center, the Albert G. & Helen Nassif Radiation Center (opened in September 2015) and services offered at St. Luke’s. And thanks to generous donors, large and small, the Foundation exceeded its goal, raising more than $1.4 million by year-end. “We have extraordinary partnerships in cancer care,” explains Foundation President Mary Klinger. “That’s true of our providers and it’s true of our donors.” Among those is Helen Nassif, a former Cedar Rapids resident who went on to a successful career as an attorney, businesswoman and developer in the Washington, DC, area. Ms. Nassif has a long history of supporting Cedar Rapids organizations, including St. Luke’s. She says, “I am fortunate to play a supportive role in helping the hospital provide the best care possible to eastern Iowans.” Helen Nassif’s gift of $500,000 to St. Luke’s Foundation in support of the hospital’s new radiation center was instrumental in completing the full spectrum of cancer care for St. Luke’s

patients. The gift honors her late brother Albert, who inspired and encouraged Helen Nassif in her career and her philanthropy. Another exceptional gift came from the Aegon Transamerica Foundation. “We have always been a good partner of St. Luke’s,” says Lon Olejniczak, Transamerica senior vice president and a former member of the St. Luke’s Foundation board. “We believe we have a mission to give back to the communities where we live and work.” The Transamerica Foundation awarded a $200,000 grant to support the Cook Cancer Wellness Program at the Community Cancer Center. In addition, they extended a challenge: Transamerica would match donations from health care providers, dollar for dollar, up to a total of $300,000. “The impact of this gift was tremendous!” says Christoffersen. “It encouraged giving from all providers. Together with Transamerica’s initial donation, the value of their gift totaled more than $800,000.”

DR. WILLIAM FUSSELMAN, Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa – Hematology & Oncology, NIKI LEE, Transamerica, and LON OLEJNICZAK, Transamerica, REPRESENT THE SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIP WITH TRANSAMERICA AND HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS

“The idea of a matching grant that engaged physicians, health care employees and partners really resonated with us,” says Olejniczak. “St. Luke’s Foundation could use our money to leverage their campaign and get more bang for their buck.”

Adds Christoffersen, “What is most significant here, is through all of our partners, we have magnified our results incredibly. We are improving the quality of life for cancer patients and their families at an extremely difficult time.”

Physicians, St. Luke’s and Community Cancer Center associates and other provider partners more than rose to the challenge. Their contributions surpassed the $300,000 goal. “The match generated so much enthusiasm,” says Klinger. “Our employee giving campaign brought in donations from $5 to $25,000. Everyone wanted to contribute.”

You can help cancer patients and their families when you support the Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center. Designate your gift securely online at unitypoint.org/ cedarrapids. Click on Ways to Give.

Cedar Rapids homebuilders Wes Howard and Dave Vanous had an idea. They knew about the struggles faced by their friends Marty and Jen Hoeger when their five-year-old son Jack was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer in 2005. Since then, the Hoegers have organized an annual I Know Jack event to raise money for cancer research and services. What if we could build a house, thought Howard and Vanous, sell it and turn the profits over to I Know Jack? They sprang their idea on Marty Hoeger over lunch in 2014. “I was overwhelmed,” admits Hoeger. But after considering it, Hoeger responded, “What would you think about giving the money to the Ronald McDonald Family Room instead?” As a member of St. Luke’s Foundation board, Hoeger knew funds were needed to create Eastern Iowa’s first Ronald McDonald Family Room at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital. He and his wife also understood first-hand how vital a facility like that is for families battling cancer. “We used the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester, MN, when Jack was being treated at Mayo Clinic,” explains Marty Hoeger. “It was a lifesaver for us.”

The House St. Luke’s Ronald McDonald Family Room, which opened in January 2015, serves as a home within the hospital for families with a critically ill child. They can eat, sleep, shower, or simply recharge, while remaining steps away from their child. “The decision was easy,” says Vanous. Both he and Howard liked the idea of keeping the dollars they raised in Cedar Rapids to help local families. They decided to call their project The House That Jack Built, because Jack Hoeger was their inspiration.

GE NE ROS I TY

Subcontractors who were told “anything you can do to keep costs down” quickly got onboard. “All the subcontractors were happy to help,” says Howard. “Some didn’t just give profits, they gave everything.” When Ralston Construction was asked to submit an invoice for excavating the basement—work valued at several thousand dollars—owner Mark Ralston replied, “Don’t worry about it. There is no bill.” In all, more than 40 companies and individuals donated materials and labor

that Jack Built to make The House That Jack Built a reality. Jason Vestweber and Skogman Realty contributed the marketing services and the home sold quickly. “Initially we thought we might be able to donate as much as $25,000,” says Howard. Instead, The House That Jack Built generated $67,405 for St. Luke’s Ronald McDonald Family Room endowment! “Our subcontractors are really the ones who made this happen,” says Vanous.

“Wes and I spearheaded it, but we wouldn’t have succeeded without all these guys coming together.” As for Marty and Jen Hoeger, their I Know Jack Foundation has raised more than $125,000 to help cancer patients and their families. Locally their foundation supports the Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center by providing I Know Jack packs—backpacks filled with support and comfort items to help patients on their cancer journey.

GE NE ROS I TY

“The Community Cancer Center gives them to all newly diagnosed patients,” explains Marty Hoeger. “We are committed to providing 300 I Know Jack packs this year.” From The House That Jack Built to comfort supplies for local patients, 16-year-old Jack Hoeger, whose disease is in remission, continues to inspire others in the fight against cancer. HILLARY SVESTKA AND TIM TEEL CALL BENEFIT BIKE RIDE THEIR WAY OF SAYING THANK YOU

“This is 100% Timmy”

Six days. That’s all Hillary Svestka and Tim Teel had

with their first child. But those precious days are making a difference for families in the Cedar Rapids area.

Giving in son’s name helps turn tragic loss into “something beautiful”

Timothy Ray Teel II was born in an ambulance rushing his mother to UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital. Little Timmy was extremely premature—just 25 weeks—and was immediately admitted to St. Luke’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Over the next six days, Svestka and Teel spent every moment possible with their son, surrounded by the love and support of family, friends and the dedicated NICU staff. Little Timmy passed away in his parents’ arms on November 13, 2014. But Svestka and Teel are determined their son’s legacy will live on. On May 16, 2015, they held the first

Timothy Ray Teel II Benefit Ride, raising $10,000 to help families touched by premature birth. “We’re motorcycle enthusiasts and we’ve seen how much the motorcycle community has done for others,” explains Tim Teel. “We thought a benefit ride would be a great way to raise money.” With their whole family pitching in, Svestka and Teel organized the ride and solicited donations from local businesses and individuals. Close to 200 people participated in the inaugural ride, with many more attending an event at Wild Hogs in Walford, where raffle tickets and a silent auction added to the total. The proceeds went to St. Luke’s Foundation in the form of a Guardian Angel donation. The Guardian Angel program helps families recognize caregivers, including St. Luke’s employees, doctors and volunteers, who made their journey easier. At the Guardian Angel ceremony at St. Luke’s, Svestka and Teel honored 28 individuals who helped them and their son, including the emergency medical technicians who delivered Little Timmy in the ambulance. “Everyone was incredible,” says Teel. “They were responsible for giving us those six days with our son.”

as well as children admitted to St. Luke’s for treatment. The couple has established the Little Timmy Memorial Foundation and intends to make the Timothy Ray Teel II Benefit Ride an annual event. The 2016 ride is June 25, with the proceeds going to St. Luke’s NICU and the Ronald McDonald Family Room. In addition to raising money, Svestka and Teel want to raise community awareness. “We learned many people don’t know what a NICU is,” says Svestka. “We have a great facility right here in Cedar Rapids, with amazing people. Letting people know about it is our way of saying thank you.” Teel adds, “Infant loss is something people don’t like to talk about. When it happens to you, you feel alone in the world. It helps to know others have had the same experience.” Today, Svetska and Teel treasure their time with baby daughter Isabella. But

they are determined Little Timmy will live forever for the benefit of others. “We want people to know our story and understand you can turn something tragic into something beautiful,” explains Teel. “We’re doing this for Little Timmy and all the little baby angels in the world.” Are you interested in nominating a caregiver for a Guardian Angel? HILLARY & TIM SHARE A SMILE WITH DAUGHTER ISABELLA AT ST. LUKE’S BIRTH CARE CENTER

Teel and Svestka directed their $10,000 donation to be split evenly between the NICU and the new Ronald McDonald Family Room® at St. Luke’s, which opened in 2015 in the Helen G. Nassif Center for Women’s and Children’s Health building. Svestka says they chose to support the Family Room because, “It’s the hardest thing to leave the hospital when your child is there and you know things can happen in an instant. It’s important you stay right there.” The Family Room serves as a home within the hospital for family members of newborns like Little Timmy,

Retired teacher’s planned gift will benefit rural communities

NYLA MCCALL GIVES TO HELP FUTURE GENERATIONS

Paying it Forward There’s something special about small towns. They might not have all the conveniences of a larger city. But people know their neighbors, and in times of need, folks are quick to lend a helping hand. Nyla McCall learned the importance of volunteerism while growing up in Mechanicsville, 25 miles east of Cedar Rapids. “My parents, Howard and Bethany Rinehart, would do anything they could for their community,” says McCall. “It was a good way to be raised. Their sense of volunteerism was instrumental in shaping me into the person I am today.” Now a retired high school teacher in Mount Vernon, McCall remains committed to helping others. That extends to her estate planning. In 2015, McCall contacted Amy McKelvy, director of development for St. Luke’s Foundation. “Nyla told me she wanted to make a bequest to St. Luke’s Foundation in her will,” explains McKelvy. “We met to discuss the many programs the Foundation supports and Nyla chose to direct her funds to Rural Health Care Grants, which focus on equipment and 10

continuing education for emergency medical technicians (EMTs) serving rural communities. That’s really where her heart lies.” “Once I saw the Rural Health Care Grant program, there was no doubt in my mind where I would put my money,” says McCall. “In an emergency, the EMT is the first line of defense for people in small towns. That’s why making sure our first responders have the right equipment and the right training is so important. The faster you get help, the more likely you are to survive.” St. Luke’s Rural Health Care Grant program provides matching grants toward projects that improve the health and wellness of rural residents. Funds have been used to purchase lifesaving equipment, train emergency medical technicians and reimburse transportation expenses for volunteers. Since 1980, St. Luke’s Foundation has awarded more than 160 grants totaling over $300,000 to support emergency medical and transportation services in Benton, Cedar, Delaware, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn and Poweshiek counties. McCall’s husband Dean, who grew up in Manchester in Delaware county and is GE NE ROS I TY

himself a former volunteer firefighter, supports McCall’s decision to help others through her will. “Volunteerism,” Nyla McCall explains, “is part of our family mantra.” Nyla McCall’s bequest makes her a member of the Carl & Mary Koehler Legacy Society, which recognizes individuals who have remembered St. Luke’s Foundation with an estate or other planned gift arranged during their lifetime. Amy McKelvy calls planned gifts “the future of our hospital,” adding, “When you create a giving plan, you help ensure patients will continue to receive the expert care they need.” “People help you over the years, so you pay it forward,” says McCall. “Someone did it for you, so you do it for the next generation. I trust St. Luke’s Foundation to use my money wisely and use it well. It gives me great joy to know someone will benefit from my gift.” Are you interested in learning more about the Carl & Mary Koehler Legacy Society? Nelson Electric and FUSE make a difference for the Dr. Rhys B. Jones Dental Health Center For 40 years, the Dr. Rhys B. Jones Dental Health Center (DHC) at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s has been helping low-income children and specialneeds patients. Rising poverty rates, increased Medicaid enrollment and too few Medicaid providers drove record volume at the DHC in 2015, with more than 6,000 patient visits. Ritu Bansal, DDS, MPH, director of the DHC, says, “Many of these children have never seen a dentist and have severe tooth decay. About 50 percent of our patients have extensive needs.” Those needs often translate into longer time in the dental chair. Explains Sara Sodawasser, DHC clinic supervisor, “We have a lot of little ones who are in the chair an hour and it’s hard for them to sit still that long.” In 2015, the DHC approached St. Luke’s Foundation with an idea to use TVs and DVD players to distract young patients. The Foundation immediately reached out to Nelson Electric for help. “We are St. Luke’s network services provider and we consider them our partner,” says Dave Murray, Nelson Electric president. “We also believe we have a responsibility to give back to our community. When the Foundation told us about this project, we were glad to help.” The Nelson Electric donation has enhanced the DHC’s ability to care for our patients. “The TVs allow our kids to watch their favorite show while our providers work,” says Sodawasser. “We couldn’t have done this without the support of Nelson Electric.”

As for the results, Sodawasser says it’s amazing. “You plug in the movie Frozen and our patients are in awe. They can focus on their favorite movie versus the work we are doing.” Meanwhile, the DHC faced another dilemma. As a hospital-based clinic, it has to meet the strict safety standards of the accrediting agency, Joint Commission. In 2015, Joint Commission mandated a more stringent disinfection process for the DHC. “We were facing an expense for new equipment that was not part of our budget,” says Sodawasser. “That is when St. Luke’s Foundation reached out to FUSE for their help. FUSE, a collaboration of IBEW Local 405 and the National Electrical Contractors Association, brings union members and management together to help nonprofit organizations. Over the years, FUSE has supported initiatives totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars, including $100,000 after the 2008 flood to rewire homes for residents. Jim Jones, a member of the FUSE board, explains, “It’s a way to help our community. And it lets people see us as more than their electrician or contractor. We are also their friends and neighbors.” Jones adds, “We have specific guidelines for giving. The opportunity to help the clinic fit those parameters and was something we could do easily.” FUSE awarded the DHC funds to purchase dental instrument cassettes needed for the enhanced sterilization process. “It gives us peace of mind to know we are doing everything we can to protect our

Steve and Jodie Ries keep son’s dream alive by helping kids impacted by cancer BEN RIES

Living the

Legacy

Ben Ries knew first-hand what it was like to be a kid fighting cancer. Yet even in the midst of his battle with a brain tumor, Ben was determined to help other pediatric cancer patients. “Ben was always worried about the child in the next room or the next bed,” recalls his dad, Steve Ries. With their son as an inspiration, Steve and Jodie Ries established the Aiming for a Cure Foundation. Drawing on Ben’s love of hunting dogs, Aiming for a Cure held its first celebrity bird hunt in 2004. Ben Ries lost his five-year battle with cancer the following year at the age of

14

12, but his legacy of helping others lives on. “We just celebrated our 13th annual hunt,” says Steve Ries proudly. “We’re closing in on $2 million raised, and we give 100 percent back to help children and their families.” In 2015, Aiming for the Cure Foundation awarded $25,000 to St. Luke’s Foundation to create the Family Care Program at the Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center. This program specifically helps children whose families are affected by cancer. “When a parent has cancer, it impacts everyone in the family,” explains Jennifer

JODIE, RACHEL & STEVE RIES AT THE 13TH ANNUAL AIMING FOR A CURE FOUNDATION BANQUET

Sweeney, annual giving director for St. Luke’s Foundation. “It causes stress. It creates financial burdens. Through the Family Care Program, we’ve helped buy diapers and formula for a young family whose husband and father was diagnosed with cancer. We helped another family take a weekend getaway trip so they could relax and be together. And we threw a wonderful Christmas party for patients and their loved ones. We had 75 children there. It was a day when they didn’t have to worry about cancer, they could just have fun.” Steve and Jodie Ries say the Family Care Program fits perfectly with Ben’s

priorities—faith, family and friends— which continue to guide their foundation today. “We want to lighten the burden for families with cancer,” says Jodie Ries. “We’ve been through it ourselves, we know what they’re going through and we want to help any way we can.” Steve Ries agrees. “I look at this as living the legacy Ben created. We’re doing more than supporting kids and their families financially. We’re making a difference in their lives.” The contribution for the Family Care Program marked the first time Aiming for a Cure has partnered with the

Community Cancer Center. “Some of our other partner sponsors asked if we supported them,” says Steve Ries. “We looked into the work the Community Cancer Center is doing and approached them to see what their needs were.” That led to the donation to St. Luke’s Foundation on behalf of the Community Cancer Center. “We’re proud Aiming for a Cure chose to work with us in this way,” says Sweeney. “They are an absolutely wonderful, top-notch foundation whose mission is to help kids affected by cancer. Through their generosity, we have already helped many children and families.”

GE NE ROS I TY

“It tugs at your heart,” says Jodie Ries. “Everyone has been touched by cancer in some way. You hear their stories and you want to help.” Adds Steve Ries, “The celebrity hunt and banquet is a lot of work and sometimes we wonder how much longer we can do this. But then we think, how could we quit?” For more information about the Family Care Program, contact St. Luke’s Foundation at (319) 369-7716.

New giving program offers a beautiful way to help cancer patients

The Healing Power of Art Research shows that art can aid in the healing process and improve the patient experience. It can reduce pain and stress while increasing overall well-being. St. Luke’s Foundation is harnessing the healing power of art to benefit cancer patients and their families. You can help when you donate to the Photo Gallery Art Project, which places beautiful images throughout the Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center and the Albert G. and Helen G. Nassif Radiation Center. Donors can choose from more than 100 beautiful photographs, from local landmarks to pastoral landscapes. These timeless images were taken by local photographers Ed and Molly Kempf (Impact Photography/Joe Photo) and

Andrea Shriver. Each 16 x 24 panel is $1,000 and can be used to honor a loved one, celebrate a survivor or make a lasting gift for the benefit of cancer patients. The Photo Art Gallery Project supports the Community Cancer Center in its mission to surround patients and their loved ones with quality cancer care and support, from diagnosis through treatment and beyond. Proceeds from the project help provide services such as nutrition consultations and integrative therapies that are not reimbursed by insurance. For more information or to sponsor a photo, call St. Luke’s Foundation at (319) 369-7716.
