W

hen faced with the reality of coping with a life-limiting illness, we believe that all patients should be entitled to the very best care available. St Luke’s has been providing specialist palliative medical and nursing care, free of charge, to patients from Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall since 1982.

A registered charity, we are passionate about offering our patients dignity and choice at a time in their lives when they may feel they have none. Our vision is to provide the best end of life care to all patients wherever their ‘preferred place of care’ might be - Hospice, Hospital or Home.

Each year St Luke’s Hospice cares for more than 2,800 terminally ill patients from across Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall. Statistics show that 1 in 5 people in this area will develop a terminal illness at some point in their lives. Subsequently there is a growing need for specialist palliative and end of life care. With your help St Luke’s Hospice can continue to provide that special care for patients and support for families.

Government funding covers less than 30% of the cost of caring for patients. We therefore have to raise at least £4 million from the local community every year, so the fundraising never stops!

Sandy Rice and her husband Dave, members of the Livingwell Church in Plympton, were encouraged by Minister Neil Collins to do some activities for the wider community.

Sandy decided to arrange a Garden Party, open to everyone in their back garden, raising awareness and funds for St Luke’s.

The garden party was a success, raising £381.75 through the sale of coffee and cakes, a ‘find the flowers’ game and live music. Sandy said: “The Fundraising Team helped us with organising, marketing, providing gazeebo’s and promoting the event which helped the day run smoothly. They helped us understand the enormity of the work St Luke’s do, which really inspired us.

“I was excited when we decided to do this, our home is only small, but we had the support of our friends and the church community. We made sure everyone was clear on how and when they could help from the start. It was great fun and we feel we helped bring the community together. I want to encourage more people to get involved with their community. If you call in your friends and family you will soon realise you have more facilities than you thought!”

The fourth annual Lovejoy invitational was held at Cornwood Cricket Club’s Oak Park ground. More than 100 people attended to watch Team Stones take on Team Chewy in the annual charity match in aid of St Luke’s Hospice.

The Lovejoy invitational was initiated after the sad passing of Oddballs Cricket Club legend Chris ‘Lovejoy’ Haines in 2006. He and his family were so well looked after by St Luke’s that Dan Stones and Ryan Hewitt of Oddballs Cricket Club decided to run an annual fundraiser in Lovejoy’s honour.

The event has grown year on year with between £250 and £350 being raised each year, but the 2010 was the biggest event yet with the addition of a charity auction, a quiz and a raffle.

In total £1,092 was raised thanks to the huge generosity of Oddballs players, friends, family, local businesses and Cornwood Cricket Club.

Fab Fundraisers Tips Tips From The Millbrook Meanders...

• Pick an event that you are comfortable following through to the bitter end.

• One of the biggest lessons we learned was not to have too many organisers.

• Keep it local; if people recognise you they are likely to give you a donation.

• Don’t make it too big. Always start small and see how it goes.

• If you are organising a walk, find a start and finish venue. Pubs are great – you can offer them free advertising as we did.

• BEFORE THE WALK we visited every pub en route and asked if we could call in on the night in fancy dress and collect.

• Make yourself stand out in a crowd and don’t be shy. We donned pink feather boas, fascinators and pink clothes and people were drawn to us to ask what it was all about.

• When collecting the sponsorship money, give everyone 2-3 weeks and set a firm cut off date.

• Keep smiling and have fun – even if it’s raining!

Things to Consider First Aid - Ensure you have adequate insurance cover available for the scale of your event.

If you are not sure, please check with the Community Fundraising Team.

Food - Contact your local council for food hygiene regulations at events.

Alcohol - Check if the venue is licensed or contact the council to find out how to get a temporary license.

Risk Assessment - Identify any hazards and evaluate any risks at your event that you’ll need to consider.

Note - If under 16 please do not obtain door-to-door sponsorship without an adult and contact the council for permission.

The first thing you need to answer is, are you planning to hold an event or get sponsored for a challenge?

Below is a helpful step by step guide to plan your event or challenge: Place a tick next to each completed stage to stay on track!

Decide on the type of event you would like to hold & who it will be aimed at.

Choose a suitable date, place & time & book a venue if needed.

Think about how you plan to raise money from the event.

Contact the Community Fundraising Team for a sponsor form if necessary.

Check requirements. Is your event in a public area? If so, you need to get in touch with the council. Do you need insurance for yourself and the public? Please see page 10 for details.

Work out a budget and time line to help you through your preparations and marketing.

Sponsored Events Sponsored events are a great way to raise money.

You can be sponsored for almost anything - a walk, run, head shave or even sitting in a bath of baked beans!

• Decide on your sponsored event.

• Chose date, time and place.

• Get permission from appropriate people e.g. Councils, Highways etc.

• Does your event need extra equipment, for example, directions or signs?

• Set up an online sponsorship page by visiting:

• Get everyone to sponsor you! (Family, friends, work colleagues and local businesses).

• Collect sponsorship money up front where possible.

• Certificates are a good idea for team events.

• Let us know how you’ve done, we’d love to see a photo!

• Thank all of your supporters and try to get press coverage (page 10).

Writing a Press Release Publicising your event or challenge is very important. The more people who know the more will attend or sponsor you.

The local radio and newspapers are great, you will need to write a press release to help them get the information they need.

Don’t panic - it doesn’t need to be very long! Just explain: • Who is involved (local group or school, important individuals).

• What you are doing.

• Why you are doing it (i.e. to raise funds to help St Luke’s Hospice continue its invaluable work for the local community).

• Where your fundraising event is happening.

• When your event is happening.

• How much money you hope to raise to help St Luke’s.

• Explain photo opportunities that are available e.g at the opening of the event.

• Make sure the press know what time to arrive at your event, give a contact mobile number.
