elcome to St Luke’s Vista magazine. I hope you enjoy reading the articles. They show many of the faces of St Luke’s, and tell the stories of some of the people who make it such an inspiring service. I am very lucky to work with such a hard working and dedicated group of staff and volunteers and, after 18 years at St Luke’s, I continue to be inspired by the fantastic contribution they and our wonderful supporters make to caring for our local community. A big thank you to our staff, volunteers and supporters, and a sincere thanks also to those who have purchased advertising space, allowing us to bring you these stories at no cost to the charity. A

s every mother of a teenage daughter knows, Prom, the end of term party for all 16 year olds, is all about the dress. The pressures on mothers to provide financially and emotionally can be stressful as every girl considers how to wow themselves and their friends. Negotiation around these issues is essential if family life is to maintain its peaceful and steady pace. I am fortunate, having the most reasonable and thoughtful daughter (no bias surely?). However I knew that it was essential that on the night she felt beautiful.

Top tips for charity shop clothes shopping... • A plain black dress can be dressed up, or down with a few colourful accessories and you can always alter the hemline. • Trench coats and jackets can be transformed with the simple addition of a belt. • Look at things you wouldn’t normally go for, get out of your comfort zone!

We searched the shops and I held my breath as I looked at the price tags of acceptable little numbers. On the way home we went in to the St Luke’s Hospice shop in Modbury, a regular haunt, and in conversation with the lovely staff, I mentioned our efforts to look right on the night. Like the fairy godmother of Cinderella fame the staff in the shop took it as their mission to solve the problem and within no time at all a beautiful dress was produced, matched with lovely shoes and my daughter was delighted with the whole effect. Teamed with sufficient bling to sparkle on the night, a hairdo and manicure, the overall effect turned our lovely daughter into the princess she deserves to be. So I have learnt there are alternatives to the high street shops which can be equally, if not better able to meet the needs of our lovely daughters and I am deeply grateful for the kindness and support we received from the Modbury St Luke’s Hospice shop staff.

Kate Pyman is the Hospice’s Volunteer Service Coordinator and manages the employee volunteering programmes. She explains how the Big Society idea, that professionals can bring their skills into the voluntary sector, works in practice. I think the current climate has made people re-evaluate their skills and try something new, while some people are keen to keep their existing skills going. We have accommodated 16 employee volunteering days within the past 12 months, with another five currently booked in. We work with a variety of different companies from accountants, insurance, health and safety inspectors, construction and building companies to retail, engineers and representatives from the food industry. Some wish to tackle challenges that utilise their specialist skills and others wish to do tasks that are completely different to their normal working day. We provide individual days and also group challenges. Generally we are seeing an upturn in what businesses are willing to do for us, including donating materials as well as their time which is a real bonus.

What can the Big Society “ do for us?

T

he Big Society was the big idea behind the 2010 UK Conservative Party general election campaign, and now forms part of the agreement behind David Cameron’s and Nick Clegg’s coalition government. The aim is “to create a climate that empowers local people and communities, building a big society that will “take power away from politicians and give it to people”. The ideas provoke strong opinions, both for and against. Some in our community welcome the chance to get more involved, while others suggest it’s just politicians dodging responsibility for important areas of government. In our area alone we have seen the management of community facilities transferred to groups of volunteers and a push towards greater involvement by the public in decision making about services available to us. But how do the government’s big ideas affect the running of your local Hospice? Sally Taylor, Chief Executive of St Luke’s Hospice said: “St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth always has, and always will, rely heavily on the support of our local community. In this vein, we support David Cameron’s “Big Society” ideal of promoting volunteering and community involvement. I believe that St Luke’s supporters will be at the front of many such projects locally, working as they already do both for us and as, for example, school governors, community leaders and supporters of local projects.

8

The British government is pushing for businesses and community groups to get involved in providing public services, but what does this mean for your local Hospice?

We have already seen an upturn in local companies offering us their employees’ time to complete jobs which we would otherwise have paid for. We hope to see more of this in the future. We’ve already seen moves to reform the way we are funded, with future payments to St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth from the NHS and Central Government planned to better follow our patient’s path through the health care system. We have cautiously welcomed this move, though having already seen a reduction in our funding in real terms, we await with interest the details of what this means for us. However, it has to be said that the majority of the money to run our facilities comes from our community, and we expect that to forever be the case. When our loyal, hardworking and dedicated volunteers already go the extra mile every day to raise the millions we need to keep running, how much more can the big society do for us?”

Lorna Baker’s role within the Hospice is to help local businesses find ways to support St Luke’s as part of their work. She explains that the rules for companies are changing but it will always come down to personal involvement in our cause. Companies nowadays are often surprised at the cost of the work we do. The big challenges have been to get companies on board and get continual support, though I’ve noticed that some bigger, national corporates are going towards local rather than national charities. We’ve also seen staff members are having more of an input into charity work and donations. We get a lot of benefits from match funding which many big companies do nowadays which we’re pleased about. I think the important thing is the enthusiasm of the employee or company director involved. Whether it’s a big or small company, if you get someone really motivated then the benefits for us are great, even if the actual donation is constrained by the budgets.

Doctor Mary Nugent - Medical Director What have you learned about yourself from your time at St Luke’s Hospice?

30 th

w is d

As St Luke’s enters into its 30th year, a few members of the Hospice take time out of their busy schedules to share their thoughts and memories of this very special place...

s of l r a

I have been at St Luke’s for 27 years, I have changed and grown-up, I think. In that time I have become a parent and grandparent and discovered that I mind a lot about how people are treated. I am rather decisive in my views which probably can be bossy. I have found out that I am loved and respected by many of the staff and patients. I still love the medical work of specialist palliative care.

Has there been a memory at the Hospice that has really stood out to you? There have been many. 1. A wonderful young patient, many years ago, who had advanced cancer wanted to go out to a Burns night. We got the Scottish kit from a hire shop and the nurses helped him dress. He looked amazing, had a good evening and came back rather drunk! He died 3 weeks later. I remained friends with his family for a long time. 2. Two very happy visits from the Prince of Wales. 3. April fools jokes played on me by the secretaries and nurses! One when a colleague dressed in a night dress and pretended to be a new patient in bed, the place fell apart laughing when I started to ‘admit’ her. Also when Jane, staff nurse, pretended to be on the phone from the hospital with a very serious but very unlikely patient situation, again I fell for it! 4. The building changes, I have moved offices 5 times in 12 years.

What has St Luke’s done for you? Given me the ability to practice quality palliative medicine and, I think, fulfil my vocation. It has developed me from a junior doctor to a senior consultant. I have worked with a wonderful team.

Judith Talbot - End of life care facilitator (Education Team) What have you learned about yourself from your time at St Luke’s Hospice? Throughout my 35 years of nursing I have always been passionate about the delivery of excellent end-of-life care. By sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm when teaching I have learned that I can inspire others to share that passion.

Has there been a memory at the Hospice that has really stood out to you? In 2008 I was told that I had been successful in my job interview for my post with St Luke’s. One of the people who interviewed me phoned to give me the good news. They were unaware that I was in the same building at that time. I was so happy I ran up the stairs and hugged them!

What has St Luke’s done for you? By ensuring that I receive the relevant training and support to fulfil the many aspects of my teaching role, St Luke’s has provided me with the confidence and expertise necessary to meet the demands and challenges of my role. I feel valued and truly look forward to coming to work each day.

Stuart Elford - Chairman of Board of Trustees What have you learned about yourself from your time at St Luke’s Hospice? Joining the Board of Trustees was a shock and a steep learning curve for me. I would never have guessed that just a few years later I would be Chair of such a wonderful organisation. I’m constantly humbled by the ceaseless dedication of the staff and volunteers.

Has there been a memory at the Hospice that has really stood out to you? I competed in the 2011 Plymouth Half Marathon to raise money for St Luke’s. I’m no athlete and although I trained hard I suffered from hypoglycemia and collapsed half a mile from the finish. A couple of runners stopped to help me, with an arm around each I staggered on and somehow I finished. It turns out that one of the couple had lost her father in St Luke’s, they gave up any chance of a good result to help me. This restored my faith in human nature and demonstrated the depth of love, affection and support people have for the Hospice.

Supplying You With A 24 Hour On Demand Taxi Service Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles Available WE LOOK FORWARD TO BEING OF SERVICE TO YOU

What has St Luke’s done for you? My involvement is entirely selfish – it gives me a great sense of satisfaction to do some good, which is otherwise missing from my day job. I can’t deny that being Chairman has been good for my development, but the biggest thing I get is a constant reminder of human kindness; giving time is more precious than anything else.

Marina Leadbetter - Events Fundraising Assistant What have you learned about yourself from your time at St Luke’s Hospice? There’s that saying: speech is silver and silence is golden. I’ve learned that listening to people is very important. Sometimes people just want you to be there so they can talk to you, they don’t want advice they just want to be listened to.

Has there been a memory at the Hospice that has really stood out to you? Being on stage at Midnight Walk and seeing thousands of ladies dressed from head to toe in pink and flashing accessories. It was such an amazing atmosphere and a record number of 3,000 ladies took part.

What has St Luke’s done for you? Working in the events team has taught me a lot! I’ve gained a great deal of experience and made some fantastic friends. It’s such a rewarding role as I get to experience every event and see how wonderful all of our fundraisers are and how much St Luke’s means to them. The support for St Luke’s is overwhelming and I’m so happy to be a part of such a great charity. St Luke’s Hospice welcomes your support. During my time at the Hospice I have come to learn that people make me tick! It doesn’t matter if they are patients, their families/carers, my nursing team or colleagues within the organisation, I just really enjoy interacting which is just as well because I seem to talk nearly all day, most days! Whilst I appreciate the benefits of technology a good conversation can bring so many benefits!

Has there been a memory at the Hospice that has really stood out to you? I have many memories of Hospice life. For me the power of people gathering in support holds the most powerful memories. The Midnight Walk, our Christmas Light up a Life services and the St Luke’s Fashion Show are but a few. Seeing large groups of people sharing the Hospice as a common cause, I find incredibly moving.

What has St Luke’s done for you? St Luke’s has given me a wonderful rewarding career. No day is ever the same which is extremely motivating. There have been many diverse challenges along the way and I am sure there will be many more going into the future, which as a team we are up for, always keeping the care of our patients as our priority.

Community Champion Edna Carleton has been a dedicated volunteer for St Luke’s since the Hospice doors first opened in 1982. She has seen the charity develop over the years to the invaluable and much loved organisation that it is today.

A

s a result of her loyal commitment and with the support of her fellow can collectors, Edna has helped to raise more than £26,000 of vital funds and create awareness of the important work of the Hospice in the community.

In Edna’s words...

I was one of the very first voluntary helpers when St Luke’s opened at Dean Park. I had to leave when my husband became ill. After he passed I returned to become a door to door collector. I took over the post of the Sparkwell Organiser in the late 1970s and continued to build up the collection myself until I had covered the six villages around Cornwood. I now have collectors covering these areas. In the 1980s I qualified as a spiritual healer and a reflexologist. Then together with the owner of the main healing centre in Plymouth (now at Unity House) we trained at the Bristol Cancer Help Centre over a period of two years. When sufficiently trained we started the only cancer support group in Plymouth together, which successfully continued until the Mustard Tree Centre opened at Derriford Hospital. I am able to advise cancer sufferers on diet, vitamins and minerals.

Edna Carleton - Volunteer Can Collector Has there been a memory about the Hospice that has really stood out to you? My memory of St Luke’s is knowing that the Hospice is a very happy place to visit, the loving atmosphere meets one at the moment of entering the building.

What has St Luke’s done for you? The Hospice is such a special place, one visit is never forgotten. I never stop praising St Luke’s and I’m so happy that I can still help. 12

Alison Veli - Modern Matron What have you learned about yourself from your time at St Luke’s Hospice?

Edna has recently been awarded an MBE for her exceptional work for St Luke’s Hospice and the local community. St Luke’s Community Fundraiser, Wayne Marshall said: ‘Being a volunteer for 30 years is an amazing achievement. Edna is a lovely, kind hearted person. We cannot thank her enough for her continued hard work and support. All of our volunteers do a fantastic job ‘.

The Hospice today

St Luke’s celebrates a new milestone in 2012, entering into its third decade of caring for terminally ill patients.

O

ur passion and dedication to offer dignity and choice to thousands of patients in Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall has never dwindled. With pure devotion and commitment, staff and volunteers have shaped the Hospice into what it is today. It has grown from a small, seven-bedded unit at Syrena House in Plymstock to a purpose built 20-bedded inpatient unit at Turnchapel, with a specialist service within the community and Derriford hospital. Our specialist staff includes Doctors, Nurses, Social Workers and Occupational

Therapists who are all trained in Palliative Care. The aim of our teams is to provide the highest quality of care to alleviate pain and distressing symptoms and to offer practical, emotional and spiritual support to patients, their families and their carers. St Luke’s cares for people with serious illnesses such as cancer, motor neurone disease, heart failure, multiple sclerosis and chronic lung disease. Since 1982, we have felt a strong presence of support from the community; their support has always been and will continue to be very important. We appreciate the many partnerships, sponsors, loyal friends, volunteers, advocates, patients and families we’ve had the pleasure to know during the last 30 years. It’s an honour to pause, and simply say thank you.

The St Luke’s Education Team work hard to maintain the Hospice national reputation for excellence in End of Life Care (EoLC) throughout its 30 year history.

Celebrating Success

www.city-chiro.com

W

e are celebrating another national first with our ‘Six Steps to Success’ EoLC programme as the first in the country to offer accreditation with a Hospice, when completed. The nine month course focuses on EoLC in nursing home, domiciliary and dementia care (optional). When finished participants have regular practice updates throughout the year to ensure that their knowledge is kept up-to-date. Two care homes in Plymouth have gained this unique accreditation, with another thirteen care homes in Plymouth and South Hams due to be accredited in June 2012 and more in 2013. We now also include home care agencies and are proud to announce that three of these will be gaining accreditation. Each home or agency awarded has an impressive navy blue and gold presentation plaque to display, have ongoing support from our expert team of EoLC professionals and will be reaccredited every twelve months, providing they have successfully maintained their standards. Each promise to adhere to St Luke’s high standards of EoLC. We hope that this will help reassure people that the care their nearest and dearest will receive, will be the best possible.

A patient’s journey... Sixty-one year old Lesley is currently recovering from Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, she has been using St Luke’s services for the past two years. What support do you receive?

On several occasions I wouldn’t have coped without their help. I have definitely gained more confidence. Just knowing that someone is on the end of the phone, day or night to talk through my concerns is such a comfort.

Why is the service important to you?

I’ve been given the opportunity to try a variety of services, including the lay back bath and a leg therapy treatment which is a blessing at keeping my water problem at bay.

Why should people be aware of the help that St Luke’s can provide?

Everyone should know what St Luke’s can offer. My life is so much easier now. They put your mind at rest, making things easier to accept and are always there to listen.

What would life be like without St Luke’s? Very quiet, I think I would be at a loose end as I live on my own. The services are the main focal point of my life. I wouldn’t have any backup apart from when I visit my GP.

I’m just a normal person who happens to have a horrible illness. I don’t get treated any differently by my therapists, I feel comfortable around them and we always have a good laugh! I would like to thank everyone at St Luke’s for all that they do. They truly are the best.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine Lead Practitioner Val Evans has worked at St Luke’s for over six years. Originally from a nursing background and a therapist for over 25 years, her main role is to provide relaxation and well being to patients and their main carers. She explains...

We provide aromatherapy, massage, reiki, reflexology, relaxation and visualisation as well as the Bowen technique. The main aim of each therapy is to relax the patient, working very closely with the medical teams here at St Luke’s Hospice. We offer comfort, space and time in a safe environment. Working alongside traditional medicine in very much a clinical way compared to what you would normally receive in a beauty salon. The team, apart from myself, are all volunteers who generously give up their time to help and are essential to providing therapies across St Luke’s at Turnchapel, Pearn and the Day Hospice.

I receive a great deal that I’ve found extremely helpful. My Community Nurse Cathryn has been my main contact, she always points me in the right direction and also Val Evans (CAM Lead Practitioner) is great, she instantly knows as soon as I walk through the door if I need a treatment or just some time to talk, she is so understanding.

Plymouth diving sensation and longstanding St Luke’s supporter Tom Daley took some time from his busy training schedule to answer our questions... Before becoming involved with helping St Luke’s did you know much about the charity? I knew of many family members that were cared for in the Hospices in their final days and I know they were very happy and peaceful in the end. Were you surprised to learn how much money St Luke’s must raise each year (at least £4.5 million) in order to remain open? It’s a very surprising figure, I think if more people knew they would be more generous in their giving. How/when did you become interested in diving? I went to my local swimming pool with my family and saw people diving and I thought I would give it a go. I was 7 years old. Do you think the new Life Centre will be an advantage for Plymouth and influence the local community to become more active? Definitely, it will make the divers training a lot easier and allow more people to try new sports and have state of the art facilities to do it in too. How many hours a week do you train and are you feeling confident about the Olympics? I train for 24 hours a week and I’m as confident as I can be at this stage. If you could compete in any other Olympic event, what would it be and who would you like to meet? Arial skiing, where you go down a ramp and then do somersaults off of it and Usain Bolt would be awesome to meet, but he might be hard to catch! What are your aspirations for the future? I hope to win every major diving title, I only have the Olympic title to go.

We wish you lots of luck for the Olympics Tom!

lympic efforts t’s not just a big year for St Luke’s in 2012. In fact, the whole country will be under starters orders as the London Olympics hits the UK.

The nearest events to us will be Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour, the venues for the Olympic and Paralympic Sailing competitions, and the first London 2012 Games venues to be finished. Although Plymouth may not be holding any events as part of the main schedule, thousands of people are expected to gather here when the city plays host to the Olympic Torch Relay on May 19, 2012. As part of the first evening celebration in the country there will be entertainment shows and a specially created cauldron will be lit from the Olympic Flame, which will have travelled from Land’s End in the previous days. Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games said: “The Olympic Flame will shine a light right across Plymouth, celebrating the culture and heritage of the area and showcasing the very best of Plymouth. We have no doubt that the welcome Plymouth will provide, demonstrates how the spirit of the Olympic Games is reaching out across the UK and excitement builds as the start of the 2012 Games draws closer.” Once the Games kick off there will be chances to sit back and enjoy shows on the Big Screen in Plymouth’s city centre, covering both key events and the history of the Games.

We’ll also get a taste of top-class international sport as the newly-built Life Centre is to welcome the Canadian and Lithuanian diving team for training and that’s all on top of an expected boom in tourism as visitors from all over the world descend on England for the three week extravaganza. If you are feeling left out there’s plenty of challenges that St Luke’s can offer you. From our special 30-mile Midnight Walk for the ladies or our 50-mile Tour de Moor bike ride, there’s a sporty special on our menu just for you. Or perhaps you have already signed up to any running event, anywhere in the country? The Hospice would be delighted if you would be good enough to complete the event in aid of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth. Contact our fundraising office for more details on any of our challenges on (01752) 492626.
