Our culture defines the church according to a building or the hour of 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning, but what if you could find a community of people who believed church was a catalyst for change? What if Church was more about working together to make a difference in our community rather than just meeting together for an hour a week? As a congregation we value Christ-centered love lived out in acceptance, hospitality, community, discipleship and service. We long for everyone to experience the Open Hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors of God’s Church. If you’re a St. Luke’s member or attend regularly we hope you’ll “Simply Invite” your friends to join you for worship and experience who we are as a Church for themselves. If you don’t have a place to grow spiritually, ask questions about God or connect with others, we hope you’ll come back and join us as well. This Worship Guide will provide you with many opportunities to connect with our diverse ministries. We invite you to get involved! To assist parents and restless babies during worship, we have a glass-enclosed room in the back of the Sanctuary and the gym lobby area available. We also offer a free nursery in Building A for babies who are at least six weeks old. MLK CANDLELIGHT VIGIL AND INTERFAITH AND MULTICULTURAL SERVICE: All are invited to join an array of religious and civic leaders at the Orlando City Hall TONIGHT. The vigil and march will begin at City Hall at 6:00 p.m. and proceed to First United Methodist Church (142 East Jackson Street) where we’ll conduct the city's annual Interfaith and Multicultural Service. SPECIAL NEEDS MUSIC THERAPY: Group and private music therapy sessions are being offered through the St. Luke’s School of the Arts. Education is an important part of our culture and our student’s upbringing. Sometimes our students are in need of extra help and we are here to help them with their schoolwork. STORYLINE: Led by Chad and Wendy Cooper, this class is designed to help each participant discover his or her role in God’s story and includes learning, laughing, and writing about the journey. The class meets Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in Building B Room 212. There is a $30 charge for materials, but scholarships are available. THIRD GRADE BIBLES: This year, third grade students will receive Bibles during re•define, our contemporary family worship service, on February 17 at 11:00 a.m. in the Coleman Gymnasium. PASTOR BILL’S ANNUAL “JOURNEY THROUGH THE BIBLE” HOLY LAND TOUR: Scheduled for May 15, 2013 for 12 days. This year’s optional extension tour is 6 days spent in Jordan and Egypt visiting Mt. BECOME A ST. LUKER...TAKE THE FIRST STEPS Many people ask how to get connected at St. Luke's, learn more about being a disciple and what it takes to be a member. We want to make sure people really know who we are as St. Luke's and as United Methodists as well as how and why we worship, connect, grow and serve in the ways we do! We have developed an entirely new FIRST STEPS PROCESS to learn about Christianity, the Bible, United Methodism and St. Luke's. Step 1: Attend a Welcome Gathering The next gathering will be held February 24, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. Step 2: Attend Four Learn Classes Each class is one month long. If you are new or returning to church we invite you to take all four classes. If you are transferring from another church where you have been active, we invite you to take the two classes on United Methodism and St. Luke's 101. Step 3: Attend the Decide Class This one month class will be held four times a year and will be taught by St. Luke's Leadership. We will concentrate on the spiritual disciplines, how we read the Bible , stewardship and missions. At the end of this class you will have the opportunity to consider joining the church and becoming a member on one of our Membership Celebration Sundays. FAMILY PROMISE: St. Luke’s will host families from Sunday, January 20 through Sunday, January 27. Volunteer opportunities during the week include setting up and tearing down the rooms, fellowship, evening and overnight hosts, and providing meals. JOBS PARTNERSHIP NEEDS VOLUNTEERS: The Jobs Partnership is a faith-based organization committed to helping under/unemployed persons find meaningful, stable employment. Ten people who are comfortable leading small group discussions are needed to lead groups from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday nights at the Callahan Center. This can be done by one person for all 12 weeks or it can be a shared responsibility between 2 or 3 people. Training is available on January 22. Volunteers are also needed to serve as Job Counselors on Thursday nights from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m at HD Supply (near Arena). PRAYERS FOR CUBA TEAM DEPARTING: January 20 through January 29, the Cuba mission team will visit our sister church in Melones. They will provide a children's event, give a presentation to the Methodist seminary in Havana, and participate in the dedication of the pastor's house for which St. Luke's helped provide funds. Please keep this team and the congregation in Melones in your prayers. A ONE TIME SERVICE OPPORTUNITY: The Parent Empowerment team of Educational IMPACT is organizing a Community Resource Event on Wednesday, January 30 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Mollie Ray Elementary School. MISSIONS MINISTRY SEEKING DIRECTOR OF FAMILY STABILIZATION: This part-time (25-30 hours a week) position with benefits will work as the liaison between St. Luke's and the Circle Campaign, a community based initiative that creates relationships across class and race-lines. Candidates must be available to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends as well as mandatory training from February 19-23 in Pensacola. Candidates should be organized and able to work without daily supervision. Must have leadership ability, recruitment skills, social services knowledge, cross-cultural experience, and be an excellent communicator. Formal education and experience in case management or human services is a plus.
