Our culture defines the church according to a building or the hour of 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning, but what if you could find a community of people who believed church was a catalyst for change? What if Church was more about working together to make a difference in our community rather than just meeting together for an hour a week? UPCOMING CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: Celebrate God’s welcoming love for everyone at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Everywhere Fun Fair (VBS 2013), where God’s world comes together. Our Preschool through 4th grade has reached full capacity, but we have increased the number of campers for our 5th and 6th graders (SubMerge) and are still taking registrations for this age group. VBS 2013 runs from June 17 to June 21, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Everywhere Fun Fair represents the whole spectrum of ages, races, abilities, and stages of development. GROW The Global Leadership Summit is a training event that exists to strengthen Christian leaders through skill development and inspiration. Learn Classes Beginnings: This is an intro to Christian theology, history and practice. We will discuss subjects including the Trinity, theodicy and sacraments. Don’t know these terms? Come learn! SERVE Within Our Community MEET THE ST. LUKE’S HABITAT FOR HUMANITY TEAM TODAY: Ever wonder how you can support the Habitat ministry? Visit the Welcome Hall of Building C to meet some of the team members. There are opportunities for all! The new house is located at 710 South Park Avenue in Winter Garden. • Help with construction: We have skilled and experienced construction leaders who will guide you. If you’ve done some serious home improvement, this opportunity is for you. • Assist construction volunteers: Hand out tools, hold the ladder and tools for construction volunteers. Your help makes building go faster! • Coordinate lunch: Be the point person between the team and lunch providers to coordinate lunch (provision and delivery). •Assist in administrative work: Help the core team with behind-the-scene coordination that goes into construction work. • Provide lunch: A great opportunity for families, friends and small groups to help out. We have about 20-25 volunteers on any given Saturday. • Take pictures for a photo book: Help us document the construction process and create a memory book for the Urguiaga family that will be presented at the dedication ceremony. HUNGER IN OUR COMMUNITY: WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT? Nearly 49 million Americans, including 16.2 million children (22%) under the age of 18 face hunger in their household. In 2011, Florida was sixth amongst states ranking higher than the national average of 16.2%. There is plenty of food for everybody in the U.S., but the challenge is that people living in poverty find it extremely difficult to access nutritious and affordable food. These are overwhelming statistics, but we can do our part through our own anti-hunger ministries. For more information, come to the table in the Welcome Hall in Building C near the gym or sign up to help or by contacting Sharon Briggs at sbriggs@st.lukes.org. • Coalition for the Homeless: Every third Saturday, St. Luke’s prepares and serves meals to the residents at the Coalition. You can serve four ways: bake from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at St. Luke’s; cook & prepare meals from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the shelter; serve at the shelter from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and assist with unloading and sorting food for an hour in the Fellowship Hall the Friday before the service. •Summer Lunch Program at Mollie Ray Elementary School: St. Luke’s collaborates with the Orange County Public School Food & Nutrition Program and Mollie Ray Elementary to provide lunch for children in the Pine Hills community. When school is closed for summer, 88% of the children depending on free and reduced lunch face hunger as their families juggle feeding their kids and paying other bills. • Food Pick Up: For 2.5 hours a day every other week, help the Food Pick Up team collect food and baked goods which would otherwise go to waste, and deliver to West Orange Daily Bread, Edgewood Children’s Ranch and Coalition for the Homeless. While the number of people who face hunger in our community is staggering, equally astounding is the amount of food our city wastes. • Take the SNAP challenge: Can you feed yourself and your family on $1.49 per meal per day? That’s the amount that people on the Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP or Food Stamps) get. Visit our table in the Welcome Hall in Building C for information on taking part in this eye-opening challenge. Within Our Church PROVIDE A RIDE: Help St. Lukers and provide a ride to a doctor’s appointment when a family member is not available. Share God’s love with others!
