On Sunday, June 9, the church conference voted to move forward with releasing the remaining Bodybuilding funds, forming a building committee and forming a campaign committee. JULY Update Participated in a collaborative outreach to East Winter Garden children with six other area churches. Getting first wave of volunteers screened to work through City programs. Exploring facility options for volunteer center and office. • The phase 1 building committee met with architects and worship staff on July 21 to discuss design options. • Create a Campaign Committee for fall 2013 campaign to create worship theme, informational material, prospectus and build lay volunteer teams • All St. Lukers have received Save the Dates cards in the mail. Connect RAGTIME: RAGTIME is not only a powerful portrait of life in turn-of-the-century America, but a relevant tale for today. Based on E.L. Doctorow's distinguished novel, the musical intertwines the stories of three extraordinary families as they confront history's timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America. Performances are August 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. and August 18 at 4:00 p.m. in the Coleman Memorial Gymnasium. Tickets go on sale TODAY, are $10 each and will be available in the Building C Welcome Hall between worship services, online at st.lukes.org/ragtime, and in the church office during normal business hours. *Caution: This show contains difficult subject matter regarding race, gender and violence. Please be aware when bringing children under the age of 13. Childcare will be available, details to follow. LIVING THE SERIES-GOING DEEPER IN OUR VALUES: “Living the Series” will be offered occasionally throughout the year as an additional component to the sermon series. Pastor Bill’s Exegesis class is a primer for the sermon, and this gathering will be conversational and an empowering response to the word proclaimed. The first opportunity begins alongside our “Reflect: Values that Change the World” sermon series. We are diving into our core values (hospitality, community, discipleship, service, acceptance) and discussing how they relate to erasing prejudices, reconciliation, and advocacy. This time together will prepare our hearts for the Ragtime musical (Aug. 16-18). Join us TODAY from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Attic. The Global Leadership Summit is a two-day, world-class leadership event experienced by more than 170,000 leaders around the world, representing more than 14,000 churches. Serve Within Our Community COST OF POVERTY EXPERIENCE (C.O.P.E.): The Cost of Poverty Experience is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family in the U.S. trying to survive month to month. This is a two-hour simulation and debriefing to experience what it means to live a month in the shoes of families who live between 100%-200% of the poverty level. This is a great activity for those who want to do more than talk about the problem of poverty, but want to be a part of the solution and anyone wanting to serve in local missions or on the upcoming Florida City Mission Team. This experience will take place on Sunday, August 11 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall and is appropriate for middle school age and up. Circles is a program that helps individuals build relationships across socioeconomic lines in order to empower families in poverty and change the perception of poverty in our community. This year St. Luke’s will purchase pre-filled backpacks at wholesale prices enabling your dollars to go further! Backpacks will be sold in pairs (2 for $35).
