Visit www.st.lukes.org/soa or call 407.876.5226 for more information. “Manners Matter”: Etiquette for Today’s Kids: This nine-week interactive class for grades 3 to 5 reinforces proper etiquette and good manners along with the ability to interact with others. Focusing on common courtesies, accepting differences and diversity, managing conflict, along with dining and social skills, this class will meet on Thursday afternoons from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. starting September 18. Visual Arts Classes for Children: The following classes for ages 4 through grade 5 are being offered this fall. “Hands On!”: In this 15-week hands-on class, pre-school students (4 years olds as of September 1) will work with media such as clay, chalk and paint with emphasis on the creative process. Class meets Fridays from 12:15 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. or Wednesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. starting September 5 and 10. Children’s Fine Art Studio: This 12-week hands-on class for students in grades 1 to 3 explores the world of fine art. Inspired by the Masters, participants will create 2D and 3D art projects while exploring concepts of line and texture. Class meets Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. beginning September 4. Paper Mache in Different Ways: Put a modern twist on this ancient art form. Students in grades 3 to 5 will learn at least three methods of paper mache during this 10-week class creating an animal, a vessel and an item of choice. Class meets Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. starting September 16. Zumba Dance: Join certified Zumba instructor Becca Jo Cross on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Building A Room 202 for this fun, high-energy, dance class! This class is currently offered free (donations accepted). Wear workout clothes and gym shoes. Ages middle school through adult. GROWING UP WITH YOUR CHILDREN: Dr. Joanne MacPherson will discuss the challenges of raising children and the demands it places on parents to grow themselves. Wednesday, September 17 for infants to age 5; Wednesday, September 24 for ages 6-12 years; Wednesday, October 1 for ages 13-18 years. GROW WEDNESDAY AFTER SCHOOL/WEDNESDAY THRIVE PROGRAMMING: Wednesday afternoon, children (grades K-5) will learn about themselves and their family through spiritual formation rotations, creative expression, movie segments, and games. The cost of the retreat is $75.00 and includes all class material, breakfast and lunch on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. BACK TO SCHOOL FOR CLASSROOM VOLUNTEERS: Educational IMPACT is ramping up for the new school year. Both Pineloch and Mollie Ray are specifically looking for volunteers to focus on reading and math in K-3rd grade. Mollie Ray is in need of 15 more volunteers. Maxey Elementary School in East Winter Garden needs 7 more classroom volunteers to meet their needs. Training is provided for these positions. ALL HANDS ON DECK FOR HABITAT SEPTEMBER 13: Tasks include cutting rafter tails, installing rough fascia, roof decking and installing the carport ceiling. We need 30 extra people to complete these tasks on schedule. Work hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at 555 Bethune Avenue in East Winter Garden. TRAINING OPPORTUNITY: On Sunday, September 14 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, attend an eye-opening and inspiring simulation called the Cost of Poverty Experience (C.O.P.E). Walk in the shoes of families living in poverty and learn the complexities of poverty and the barriers that keep people in poverty (for upper elementary age and up). This is required for East Winter Garden volunteers and highly recommended for volunteers of Educational IMPACT, Family Promise and Jobs Partnership. FURNITURE NEEDED: The Florida United Methodist Conference is sponsoring the Young Adult Missional Movement in its pilot year. There will be three house communities throughout the Conference with one in Orlando. Two of the young adults from the Orlando community will be working as interns at St. Luke's. Within Our Church WOMEN'S CHORALE: Beginning Monday, September 15 all women of St. Luke’s will have an opportunity to sing together in the Women’s Chorale. This group will meet on selected Monday evenings from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Building B Room 209. Selections will be both sacred and secular in nature.
