MINISTRY GUIDE • OCTOBER 4, 2015 OUR PURPOSE

“Building the Kingdom by Building Disciples”

OUR CORE VALUES

At our center is the love of Jesus Christ. We value Christ Centered: Acceptance • Hospitality • Community • Discipleship • Service

WORSHIP Today's Worship During this series we are diving into Philippians, John Wesley’s works as well as research conducted in positive psychology at Harvard. Each week there will be an action to begin to center ourselves in the spiritual disciplines of practicing joy, gratitude and kindness. Each element of happiness we encounter will give us a chance to retrain our brain and rewire our hearts to consider looking at the world through eyes of joy and hope. Pick up your copy of the "Elements of Happiness" study guide outside of either worship venue. Visit st.lukes.org/happiness to download a copy and find a study group. Continue the discussion by picking up a free "Elements of Happiness" jar full of conversation starter questions. Use the questions around the dinner table, in the car, or at the office. St. Luke's Happiness Journals are also available to help you collect your thoughts. Journals can be purchased for $5.00 in the Rotunda of Building C or in the church office.

SERVE Within The Community Today is World Communion Sunday. Pause for a minute and think what that means. It’s a powerful Sunday where Christians all over the world come together through communion. As a global church, St. Luke’s is celebrating Communion Sunday by also lifting up the pressing global issues of our times, our Mission Partners, and the missionaries St. Luke’s supports. Stop by the prayer stations in North Hallway in Building C and be a part of the praying community for: Refugee and Migrant Crisis: In 2011, the population of Syria was 21 million. Today, more than 12 million people have been forced to flee their homes and country to seek refuge elsewhere. Come to the prayer station, learn what you can do about the crisis and how the United Methodist Church actively serves to address the refugee needs. Human Trafficking: Human trafficking is not an issue that only happens in far-away countries. It’s very much a US problem as well. Learn the facts, the signs, and what to do about this world-wide issue. Domestic Violence: October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence thrives when society is silent about the issue. How does one recognize the signs? What is a healthy relationship? Who can help a domestic violence victim? Visit the booth in Building C to learn about key topics. Palestinian Peace Wall: Join UMC General Board of Church and Society in prayer for peace and reconciliation in Israel. Share your prayers for the country, the people and the region. Learn ways you can send prayers to Palestinian Christians, who live in fear and persecution. Peace Making: Peace-making and building relations starts at home. A good starting point is recognizing our biases. We all have biases, which keep us from fully engaging with people who are different from us. Often our differences are defined based on the color of our skin, money, education, social status, incarceration – things that get between us and “the other” who’s also created in the image of God. What is your bias? You will have an opportunity for a reflective prayer about biases – your own or others. St. Luke's Mission Partners: Belfast South Methodist Church, Melones Methodist Church in Cuba, St. Andrew’s and Lauriston in Jamaica, Branches in Florida City and Compassion Sponsored children in Ethiopia. Stop by the Mission Partners table to offer your prayers. Missionaries St. Luke's Supports: St. Luke’s supports Kim King Torres in Florida City, Alison Gilmore in Belfast and Michelle Shrader in South Africa. Stop by the Missionaries table and send the missionaries a note of support. OCTOBER FAMILY/INTERGENERATIONAL SERVING OPPORTUNITIES: Looking for ways to serve with your family, friends or small group? Contact Kellie Brinker at kbrinker@st.lukes.org or call 407.876.4991 ext. *239 to learn about great opportunities to enjoy each other’s company and serve in our community at the same time!
