Advent

Advent is the season when we prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ. Advent always begins four Sundays before Christmas Day. This year St. Luke’s has put together a list of ways you can Worship, Connect, Grow, and Serve during the season. WORSHIP Join us for one of our Christmas Eve Services. December 23 - Christmas Preeve Service Times: 6:15 p.m., 7:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. (These services are intended for church members and allow more room for visitors on Christmas Eve.) Connect BETHLEHEM’S GIFT FREE CHRISTMAS CONCERT: Tickets are available TODAY in the Rotunda of Building C for St. Luke’s annual Christmas concert. Performance dates and times are Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 8 at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The concerts will feature the combined choirs of St. Luke's and Solid Rock United Methodist Churches along with the gospel choir, children's choir, dance ensemble, praise team and orchestra. Tickets are free but must be picked up in advance. Due to popular demand tickets cannot be reserved for pick up at a later date. There is a 10 ticket limit per person. Within Our Community DONATIONS FOR TYPHOON HAIYAN AND TORNADO RELIEF: 100% of your donations to United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) go directly to the areas affected by these disasters. Donate online at www.umcor.org or donate to St. Luke’s and designate “typhoon” or “tornado.” MAKE CHRISTMAS MERRIER FOR A HOSPITALIZED CHILD: Nathaniel’s Hope Caroling for Kids program requests donations of new small stuffed toys, wrapped candy canes and packaged cookies. Bring items to the church office by Sunday, December 10 and label “ATTN: Carol Crowley.” Carolers are also needed to sing and deliver goodies to children in Orlando hospitals on Christmas Day. HELP US IDENTIFY CITRUS TREES FOR GLEANING: Society of St. Andrew is a faith-based organization that collects foods that have not been harvested and are left in fields. Volunteers pick the food which is donated to organizations that feed hungry families. Participate in Central Florida’s Annual Citrus Harvest on Saturday, January 11, 2014 in four ways: 1. Register your backyard tree. Go to www.endhunger.org/florida-citrusform.htm and fill in the form. 2. Pass out door hangers to neighbors. 3. Bring your own backyard fruit to St. Luke’s, one of the regional drop-off sites, on January 11. 4. Volunteer picking and packing. JOBS PARTNERSHIP TRAINING: Help with this 12 week job readiness program for people who are chronically under/unemployed. FAMILY PROMISE: St. Luke's hosts families who do not have permanent housing five times a year. Help these families feel at home by volunteering as evening and overnight hosts, helping to set up or tear down, or providing meals. EAST WINTER GARDEN COMMUNITY GARDEN: Located at the corner of 9th and Pennsylvania, this community garden currently has 100 occupied plots that help support the community by providing fresh fruits and vegetables. Families can help the garden by renting and maintaining plots for $26 a year (partial year rentals available). Other opportunities include garden workdays, and helping harvest for donation and the farmer’s market. 6-8 volunteers are needed to maintain plots through the winter. Within Our Church STEPHEN MINISTER TRAINING CLASS: St. Luke’s will be training a new class of Stephen Ministers on January 7. BE A BUDDY TO A CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: Buddy Break provides free respite care one Saturday morning or Friday evening a month for children/young teens with special needs and their siblings.
