Holy Week Guide 2013

Page 1

Welcome to the inspiring and uplifting events of Holy Week 2013. We have prepared this worship guide to aid you in structuring your week of worship with us. From Palm Sunday through Easter you will find St. Luke’s pastors, staff, musicians, and lay servant ministry volunteers ready to help you discover the life-changing love of God revealed in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Holy Week services of worship focus on the events that took place in and around Jerusalem in the spring of the year 30 AD, when an itinerant preacher/teacher/ healer named Jesus of Nazareth brought his message of love and life to Israel’s greatest city. He was hailed as the long-awaited Messiah on Palm Sunday, arrested as a troublemaker on Holy Thursday, executed as a threat to the peace on Good Friday, and resurrected as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords on Easter Sunday. Each year, both the faithful and the curious retrace his steps and contemplate the meaning his life has for them. We invite you to walk with us this year. Please use this program booklet for the entire week and bring it with you to each service you attend. Once Holy Week has passed, we hope that you will continue to explore and express your spirituality here on our campus. God is working a mighty miracle among us, and we welcome you here to experience the healing love and eternal life that are the Easter gifts of Christ which we celebrate all year long.

With faith, hope and love,

Dr. William S. Barnes Lead Pastor

This year is the same as we strive toward our Meet Jesus on the Road strategies. This offering will extend our reach by supporting our local community partners, our advocacy efforts, and ministry with our global mission partners. We encourage you to give up an amount of money daily as part of your Lenten spiritual practice and give toward this goal.

FEELING INSPIRED TO GIVE TODAY? Visit one of the St. Luke’s Giving Kiosks conveniently located in the narthex of the sanctuary and outside the gym, or use the QR code to give directly from your mobile device!

FLOWERS AND ARTWORK The list of Easter Lily donors will be available in the wall rack in the Narthex and in the North Welcome Hall. The drawings of trees that represent the seasons displayed in our worship venues were created by Barbara Wright in dedication to her mother, Virginia H. Bennett.

Prayer stations that surround the labyrinth will reflect the Seasons of the Soul Lenten sermon series that has been our focus during the season of Lent. Children are welcome to experience the labyrinth with their families. We ask that parents stay with their children throughout their time in this quiet and contemplative space in order to maintain the reflective atmosphere for everyone. Please take this worship guide with you to the labyrinth and use the space below to journal.

HOLY THURSDAY: SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION In The Coleman Gymnasium March 28, 2013 • 7:30 p.m.

Holy Thursday is one of the oldest observances of Holy Week. We celebrate this night when Jesus gathered with his disciples for the Passover Feast. However, on this Last Supper evening, Jesus would enact moments throughout the meal which we now celebrate as God saving us from slavery to sin and death through the grace of Christ symbolized in bread and cup. This worship service will focus on the movement from what seemed to be the abundance of summer, the celebration of the entry into Jerusalem and the feast of the Passover, through the transition into a season of fall, where change would come quickly and the disciples would be forced to let go of expectations, notions and ultimately, let go of Jesus.

OPENING MUSIC

“Flood” “Washed By The Water”

As you are seated you will recieve a cleansing of your hands, symoblic of Jesus’ washing of the disciples. During this time reflect on the words written by Lucy Hanson (See page 9) and consider how Christ’s washing of your hands enables you to begin to be washed of all the expecations, sins, and desires Christ is calling for you to let go of in order to grow into the fullness of the Easter resurrection.

WELCOME AND OPENING WORDS FROM A DISCIPLE *CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People:

When the abundance of the summer of our lives overwhelms us You are with us, O God. When the fierce daylight blinds us to reality You are our guide, O God. When the fruits of summer transition into the overripe and rottenness of fall You come to us to wash us clean, O God. When the fall of our lives claims us You help us begin to let go, O God. Wherever we are, whatever we are, You are our God, and we belong to you.

SCRIPTURE: LUKE 22:31-34 PETER: RELEASE FROM PERCEPTION RESPONSE: Help us release perceptions O Lord, both the masks we wear and ways we want people to see us. “Jesus Paid It All”

*Please stand in praise to God if you are able. Wash my hands on Maundy Thursday not my feet My hands peel potatoes, wipe messes from the floor change dirty nappies, clean the grease from pots and pans have pointed in anger and pushed away in tears in years past they’ve smacked a child and raised a fist fumbled with nervousness, shaken with fear I’ve wrung them when waiting for news to come crushed a letter I’d rather forget covered my mouth when I’ve been caught out touched forbidden things, childhood memories do not grow dim These hands have dug gardens, planted seeds picked fruit and berries, weeded out and pruned trees found bleeding from the rose’s thorns dirt and blood mix together when washed before a cup of tea Love expressed by the masks for your respect in the hand-shake of warm greeting, the gentle rubbing of a child’s bump the caressing of a lover, the softness of a baby’s cheek sounds of music played by them in tunes upon a flute they’ve held a frightened teenager, touched a father in his death where cold skin tells the end of life has come but not the end of love, comforted a mother losing agility and health. With my hands outstretched before you I stand humbled and in awe your gentle washing in water, the softness of the towel symbolizing a cleansing the servant-hood of Christ. Wash my hands on Maundy Thursday and not my feet.

GOOD FRIDAY: A SERVICE OF TENEBRAE In the Coleman Memorial Gymnasium March 29, 2013 • 7:30 p.m. About Tonight’s Service The service of Tenebrae, or “shadows,” was formed from a combination of night and early morning prayer with a focus on the commemoration of the Passion of our Lord. It was originally read and sung by monastic choirs in the Middle Ages, though its origin predates even that time period. The most significant feature of the service is the gradual extinguishing of the lights and candles in the room and on the altar. The bare altar and unvested furnishings emphasize the starkness of the events recalled. The candles represent the disciples and all later believers who follow Jesus, and the larger candle represents Christ himself.

OPENING MOVEMENT *CALL TO WORSHIP

BECOME A ST. LUKER...TAKE THE FIRST STEPS Many people ask how to get connected at St. Luke's, how to learn more about being a disciple and what it takes to be a member. We want to make sure people really know who we are as St. Luke's and as United Methodists as well as how and why we worship, connect, grow and serve in the ways we do! We have developed an entirely new FIRST STEPS PROCESS to learn about Christianity, the Bible, United Methodism and St. Luke's. Step 1: Attend a Welcome Gathering The next gathering will be held on April 28 at 12:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Step 2: Attend Four Learn Classes Each class is one month long. If you are new or returning to church we invite you to take all four classes. If you are transferring from another church where you have been active, we invite you to take the two classes on United Methodism and St. Luke's 101. Step 3: Attend the Decide Class This one month class will be held four times a year and will be taught by St. Luke's Leadership. We will concentrate on the spiritual disciplines, how we read the Bible, commitment and missions. At the end of this class you will have the opportunity to consider joining the church and becoming a member on one of our Membership Celebration Sundays. Please contact Carol Crowley at 407.876.4991 ext. *262 or ccrowley@st.lukes.org for further details. Page 17
