Winter 2013

Dear St. Luker’s and Friends, I am filled with excitement and anticipation for all of the opportunities that St. Luke’s has to offer in 2013. We are redefining a lot of things for our congregation and our community this year and now is a great time to get involved. Whether you are a first time visitor or a small group leader, flip through these pages and consider how you can Connect, Grow, Serve and Worship. In this issue of our winter newsletter you will find information on upcoming groups and classes for all ages as well as engaging new services and worship opportunities.

WORSHIP INFORMATION

TRADITIONAL St. Luke’s Traditional worship services are Sunday mornings at 8:00, 9:30 & 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary.

CONTEMPORARY St. Luke’s Contemporary worship service is Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in the Coleman Memorial Gymnasium, Building C.

Look inside for details on: • Small groups for adults • Events and programming for students • God-O-Sea (our children’s ministry) • Music, arts, and sports If you are thinking there must be something more, a larger plan for your life or for your family, you are sure to find your purpose and place at St. Luke’s. People are always surprised that within a church as large as ours they manage to connect with people and form lasting friendships. These connections happen for our children as they learn and grow in their faith, for our youth as they serve in inspiring ways, for our young adults who redefine what it means to be a church family, and for all of us as we “Live like St. Lukers” through acceptance and hospitality. I pray that you find a renewed sense of peace after a busy holiday season and consider a re•defined Focus, Identity and Purpose this month in worship. Bring a friend and get ready because 2013 could change the way you define everything.

Grace and Peace,

The Rev. Jennifer Stiles Williams Executive Pastor

children’s ministry “Your faithfulness is growing by leaps and bounds, and the love that all of you have for each other is increasing.” 2 Thessalonians 1:3 God-O-Sea is our Sunday morning Children’s Ministry program that serves children from 6 weeks old through 5th grade. Our curriculum, written by the United Methodist Publishing House is called “Grow, Proclaim, Serve! Grow Your Faith by Leaps and Bounds.” This curriculum incorporates Bible stories, activities, creative expression, media, and games into a full faith experience for children. With “Grow, Proclaim, Serve!” our children will develop the skills to unlock the biblical message and grow their faith by leaps and bounds. “Grow, Proclaim, Serve!” helps our children grow in mind and body, and also grow in heart and soul. “Grow, Proclaim, Serve!” nourishes and enriches our children from birth through preteen in faith so they can proclaim the good news of God’s love and serve God and neighbor. Children will realize their faith goes with them as they grow. Throughout January and February we will be discovering what it means to live in the Kingdom as we unfold the teachings of Jesus and how God wants us to live. Our teachings will be based on the following scripture: “Bring in your kingdom so that your will is done on earth as it’s done in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10,CEB). Grow, Proclaim, Serve! is committed to helping the children “grow in faith, proclaim the Word of God, and serve in love.” We are looking forward to seeing you at God-O-Sea.

Programs available for children on Sunday morning include: 8:00 a.m. – One room nursery care and faith formation for children infants (at least 6 weeks) through Pre-K. 9:30 a.m. – Age and grade specific classes and small groups for children 6 weeks through 5th grade. This is our main God-O-Sea hour. 11:00 a.m. – Nursery care and faith formation for babies/woddlers and faith formation for toddlers/pre-school/Pre-K in individual rooms. We invite our elementary children to join us at re•define, our Contemporary worship service for families in the Coleman Gym. First time to Sunday School? If your child(ren)’s first visit to St. Luke’s Sunday Programming (God-O-Sea) is coming up soon, you can save time on Sunday morning by filling out the God-O-Sea Registration Form on our website at www.st.lukes.org/ children. For a complete list of children’s classes visit st.lukes.org/children.

Citrus Harvest and Family Picnic on January 12 We have “picked” this one for your family! Stop by Bill Fredrick/ Turkey Lake Park in Metrowest anytime from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 12 (entrance into to park is free) and pick oranges from their groves that would have gone to waste. The oranges picked will provide a vital, supplemental food source for those less-fortunate here in Central Florida. People of all ages can glean (pick). Following our gleaning we will host a family picnic under a nearby pavilion. St. Luke’s will provide charcoal and beverages…please bring your own food to grill. Ideal for families to play, take nature walks, petting farm, playgrounds and enjoy the outdoors. Contact Sharon Briggs at sbriggs@ st.lukes.org or 407.876.4991 ext. *239.

Coalition Baking and Serving Dinner What a fun Saturday morning it would be to bake with your children for a good cause! What a rewarding experience for your family to serve dinner to other families! Every third Saturday of the month, St. Luke’s volunteers bake and prepare meals for the residents at the Coalition for the Homeless. Baking takes place at the main kitchen in Building C at St. Luke’s from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We serve dinner at the Coalition from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. We guarantee that it will soon be a family tradition to serve or bake for the Coalition. Watch your children wanting to go back to serve dessert this time or drinks next time. Don’t they say you learn more while having fun? What better way to learn about serving others while having fun! To sign up, contact Sharon Briggs at 407.876.4991 ext. *239 or sbriggs@st.lukes.org.

missions How your family can serve together

Family Promise: January 20-27 Five to six times a year, St. Luke’s hosts families who are temporarily without a home. For one week at a time, these families call St. Luke’s home. It takes 40-50 volunteers to make their stay pleasant. There are several opportunities for families of all ages to serve together. You can organize games with the children, activities with the mothers, prepare meals, just come to the Fellowship Hall and hang out with the families, help out with laundry and much more. For more information and/or to sign up, contact Sharon Briggs at 407.876.4991 ext. *239 or sbriggs@st.lukes.org.

Meals for Jobs Partnership class Do you enjoy cooking or baking as a family? Do you want to do so for a cause and to serve others? We have the perfect service opportunity for your family. Every spring, St. Luke’s volunteers help train adult students from Parramore in employment readiness. We do this through Jobs Partnership (a faith based organization). It is a 12-week Biblically-based soft skills training program to help people improve their employability. The next set of 12-week classes start on February 5, 2013. As part of the service to students, we provide dinner every Tuesday and Thursday during the training. We rely on volunteers providing dinner for the students and volunteers – about 50 people. You can help with part of the meal or sponsor the entire meal once or as often as you would like. For more information or to sign up, contact Sharon Briggs at 407.876.4991 ext. *239 or sbriggs@st.lukes.org.

first steps Step 1: Welcome Gatherings (1/6; 2/24; 4/28; 8/25; 10/27) Attend a welcome gathering where you will be encouraged to: • Attend worship • Join a Cluster Group • Take a Learn Class

Classes will be taught by one of our Leadership Team Ministry Staff and help people take “the next step” to becoming a“St. Luker.”

Step 2: Learn Classes Classes Held Sundays at 9:30 a.m. and Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. – childcare provided

• Spiritual Disciplines (Prayers and Presence) • Bible in 12 Words (Biblical Interpretation and Presence) • Enough: Discovering Joy through Simplicity and Generosity (Gifts) • Meet Jesus on the Road (Service)

If you’re considering membership at St. Luke’s or you just want to learn more about Christianity and Methodism, the following “First Steps” are for you.

•Beginnings: This class is designed for people who are new to or returning to the faith and who want a ground level understanding of what we believe. Four one-hour sessions on God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and very basic theology. •Bible Basics: Four weeks on how to use, how to choose and Bible study basics (starting in February) •Wesley Way: One week on John Wesley, one week on Methodist history, two weeks on Wesleyan Theology. •St. Luke’s 101: One week on Kingdom Building; one week Disciple building; one week on Social Principles and 1 Week on Missions (starting in February) *Those that are new or returning to the Faith will participate in all four classes. Those that are transfering their membership will participate in Wesley Way and St. Luke’s 101.

For more information about classes, dates and times contact Pastor Jad Denmark at jdenmark@st.lukes.org or 407.876.4991 ext.*229.

Membership Sundays: At the end of each class, participants will be given the opportunity to join in membership. These quarterly Sundays will be an opportunity to celebrate membership and allow current members to reaffirm their vows of commitment.

Step 4: Grow and Serve Whether a participant decides on membership or not, the next steps are to continue growing in the 12 Characteristics of a Disciple and in a small group. Grow: St. Luke’s believes a disciple grows when they move through a process of Learning, Deciding, Imitating and Serving Jesus Christ. Each of the Adult Discipleship small groups will concentrate on helping disciples journey through the 12 characteristics of a disciple by studying curriculum that helps them grow. Moving on from the Learn and Decide classes, participants may choose to: 1) Continue as a group by choosing a leader and working with the Director of Adult Discipleship to choose curriculum based on interest or the sermon series 2) Join an existing, ongoing small group 3) Join a small group through a cluster group Serve: Utilize spiritual gifts, passion and time commitment to either serve on campus or work with our strategic community transformation ministry.
