Our culture defines the church according to a building or the hour of 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning, but what if you could find a community of people who believed church was a catalyst for change? What if Church was more about working together to make a difference in our community rather than just meeting together for an hour a week? LUKE'S WELCOMES BISHOP KEN CARTER TODAY: On July 18-20, 2012, Ken Carter was elected to the episcopacy of the United Methodist Church, consecrated as a Bishop and assigned to the Florida Conference during the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference. A native of Georgia, Bishop Carter is a graduate of Columbus College (B.S.), Duke University Divinity School (M.Div.), the University of Virginia (M.A.) and Princeton Theological Seminary (D.Min.). In addition, he was awarded an honorary D.D. from the United Methodist University of Liberia. He was ordained a deacon in the Western North Carolina Conference in 1983 and an elder in 1986. Subsequently he served a four-point charge, as an associate pastor of missions and evangelism, as a new church planter, and as senior pastor of two large regional churches; Immediately prior to his election as a bishop he was the superintendent of the Smoky Mountain District of the Western North Carolina Conference, which included sixty-nine churches in the seven westernmost counties of the state, all within the region of Appalachia. In the Western North Carolina Conference, the bishop chaired the Board of Ordained Ministry and the Committee on the Episcopacy. He was elected to five jurisdictional conferences and three general conferences, and he led the WNCC delegation in Tampa in 2012. In the denomination, he has served on the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, the Committee on Faith and Order, and the Ministry Study Commission. He is currently a member of the board of trustees of Bethune Cookman University and Florida Southern College and the board of visitors of Duke Divinity School. Bishop Carter is the author of eight books, most recently Pray For Me: The Power in Praying For Others (Upper Room, 2012); among those endorsing his latest book was Leighton Ford, brother-in-law of Billy Graham. His books reflect on topics related to practical ministry: stewardship, spiritual gifts, baptism, the Wesleyan means of grace, and intercession. He was also a contributor to the Wesley Study Bible and the Feasting on the Word series. The bishop is married to Pam Carter, formerly the Missions Specialist with the Western North Carolina Conference and currently the Mission Interpreter with Encounter with Christ in Latin America and the Caribbean. She has a deep involvement in God’s mission in Haiti, and speaks frequently to gatherings about her work there. They have been blessed with two daughters: Liz, a Chinese translator and research analyst at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and Abby, a recent graduate of Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama.

SCHOOL OF THE ARTS REGISTRATION: Classes in music, dance, theater, writing and more for all ages are offered along with private instruction in a variety of instruments and voice. STAGE ACTING CLASS: Students in Grades 3-8 interested in acting and performing are encouraged to register for this course. Participants will work on acting technique, scene work, monologues and audition skills. The class meets Tuesdays from 5:00-6:00 p.m. No experience required. PRESCHOOL MUSIC CLASS: Our Musical Journey is a 12-week class for 3-4 year olds. Led by instructor, Patti Aeschlimann, children will explore rhythm and melody through the use of instruments and singing. This class meets either Monday or Wednesday from 1:00-1:45 p.m. TAKE THE MYSTERY OUT OF YOUR CAMERA’S MANUAL SETTINGS: This seven-week course for adults begins February 6. Taught by Anita Vrionides, you will learn how to use the features on your camera, and get tips on portrait, still life, landscape and action photography. PASTORS’ BOOK CLUB 3: EVERYTHING MUST CHANGE: Throughout the Lenten season we will discuss growth through change, with the series, “Grows: Seasons of the Soul”. Alongside this series, the pastors’ book club will offer a third book entitled, “Everything Must Change”. The author, Brian McLearen, says, “this book asks two essential questions: What are the world's top crises, and what do the life and message of Jesus say to those global crises? I developed a metaphor to help people understand global crises - a machine with four moving parts, corresponding to the four critical crises that create so much human suffering.” Starting Thursday, February 21 please join Pastors Corey and Jad as they facilitate this study at 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays for five weeks in Building C Room 205-207. THE MCKEEFERY SEMINARY SCHOLARSHIP FUND: If you are considering a church related profession, apply for the McKeefery Seminary Scholarship Fund. If you are new or returning to church we invite you to take all four classes. If you are transferring from another church where you have been active, we invite you to take the classes on United Methodism and St. Luke's 101. NEW LEARN CLASSES, BEGINNING TODAY! Bible Basics on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall and Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. in Building C Room 204 will help you become familiar and comfortable in Bible study and exploration. OPEN HOUSE BREAKFAST WITH PRISON MINISTRY TEAM TODAY: Many exciting things are happening in our prison ministries and we need more support. Shalom is helping inmates learn to read, and FREE is helping those who have spent time in prison or jail re-enter our community with dignity. Between the two ministries, St. Luke's is working with 200+ people. We need more volunteers to share hope by sharing their time. If you want to find out how you can get involved or simply learn more about these amazing ministries, join us TODAY in the Workroom in Building C from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Hear stories from those who are already volunteering and have a little breakfast on us. JOBS PARTNERSHIP MEAL COORDINATOR: This ministry is seeking a volunteer, who coordinates meals for the 12 week job readiness training held each Tuesday or Thursday starting on February 5, 2013. DIGNITY SERVES ON FEBRUARY 8 AND 9: This nine hour training is a crucial step to take for all those wanting to serve by building relationships with others. This is especially helpful for those serving through Educational IMPACT, Family Promise, Jobs Partnership, Habitat, and FREE. Over 100 St. Lukers took this training in 2012. POVERTY SIMULATION FEBRUARY 15: The Cost of Poverty Experience is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family in the U.S. trying to survive month to month.
