and Distributed Systems MQF LEVEL

6

TOTAL CREDITS: 3ECTS

This unit follows on the first year unit Core Database Principles and introduces the learner to advanced aspects of database principles and design, including higher normalisation forms with clear understanding on why and where such design considerations are needed. The learner is also introduced to more advanced database systems including the distributed database approach and other non-relational databases. Thus, this unit complements other units to provide the learner with a holistic view of database systems in use. At the end of this unit the student will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to: — decide which database model best suites the given problem; — achieve a higher degree of consistency in very specific scenarios; — undertake a project to implement a distributed database system; — take appropriate measures to improve the overall efficiency of database systems. The assessment for this unit will be computed using the following weighting system: — 40% Assessed Coursework — 60% Examinations
