This unit aims at revisiting the concept of cryptanalysis but looking deeper into particular techniques such as linear and differential analysis. Students are given the opportunity to work through a range of exercises in breaking a number of different ciphers using a variety of techniques. Such work may involve the use of pen and paper, spreadsheets or even programming. At the end of this unit the student will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to: — analyse a range of cryptosystems in detail; — describe a number of cryptanalysis techniques; — experiment with such cryptanalysis techniques in breaking codes. The assessment for this unit will be computed using the following weighting system: — 70% Assessed Coursework — 30% Examination
