This unit follows on the first year unit Implementing and Querying Databases and introduces the learner to the advanced aspects of database implementation, including security mechanisms, views, procedures, functions and triggers. These aspects control the various levels of security in a database and database management system, and ensure an adequate level of data integrity. The learner is exposed to these aspects and is expected to be able to choose the right tool or combination of tools to achieve the desired level of operation. At the end of this unit the student will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to: — implement security in databases according to given company policies; — check database systems in terms of data security and data protection; — take the necessary steps to backup database and use recovery techniques when needed; — take appropriate measures to improve the overall efficiency of database systems. The assessment for this unit will be computed using the following weighting system: — 60% Assessed Coursework — 40% Examinations
