STMARTINS.EDU/COMPUTING
TOTAL CREDITS: 6ECTS
This unit builds on work carried out from the first year units SMc10348: Cryptography Through the Ages I and SMc10349: Cryptography Through the Ages II by extending the historical outlook to after the Second World War. Specifically, the unit focuses on symmetric key systems within the computing age and aims to expose students to encryption schemes such as the DES, 3DES and AES. At the end of this unit the student will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to: — appreciate the advances in cryptography from after the Second World War; — appreciate the increase in complexity in cryptography through the advancement of computing technologies; — understand modern symmetric cryptosystems and apply them in simple situations. The assessment for this unit will be computed using the following weighting system: — 70% Assessed Coursework — 30% Examination
