TOTAL CREDITS: 2ECTS

This unit aims to discuss in detail the two types of encryption methods – private and public key systems. The unit discusses various terminologies associated with these two types of encryption schemes. It also looks into important properties such as blocking and salting, as well as providing a focus on Digital Certificates. At the end of this unit the student will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to: — distinguish between private and public key encryption; — describe the concepts of private and public key systems; — explain terminology related to cryptography together with private and public encryption; — explain improvements to strengthen security of encryptions through the use of salting, blocking and padding; — distinguish between stream and block ciphers; — explain different block cipher modes; — differentiate between different attacks that can be carried out on a cryptosystem; — describe how public key systems are used as the cornerstone of digital signatures. The assessment for this unit will be computed using the following weighting system: — 30% Assessed Coursework — 70% Examination
