Overview

Irrespective of whether you are planning to embark on your first degree, transfer from another programme or return to the university, our approach allows you to study for a world-class degree in Malta. Securing information systems from all threats is one of societies biggest challenges as more computer based systems are put in play. This brochure illustrates the structure of the MQF accredited level 6 BSc (Hons) Computing with Security & Cryptography read over three years on full-time basis. After completion of the first year, you are awarded an MQF level 5 Diploma in the same field of specialisation.

BSC (HONS) COMPUTING WITH SECURITY & CRYPTOGRAPHY This degree provides the academic span and rigour to equip you with the skills and competences that are increasingly sought after by employers. The programme equips you with a rich, dynamic understanding of coding and computer technology and prepares you for the demands of securing data and information against cybercriminals. As a student, you will be able to: • understand the vulnerabilities accessible information;

• develop secure systems using leading edge cryptography; • understand the necessity to uphold legal and moral obligations towards privacy of the individual. The BSc (Hons) programme empowers you to develop a wide and practical skillset in computing with strong programming and mathematical skills, as well as softer skills in project management, presentation and teamwork. You will also have a portfolio of work to present to potential employers. You will have all the skills and training as a computer scientist with the opportunity to specialise in security and cryptography.

Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education offers a portfolio of diplomas and degrees in computing with specialisations that are very much in demand. The Institute is licensed by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority to award qualifications ranging from MQF level 5 to MQF level 7. The Malta Qualification Framework is pegged to the European Qualification Framework, meaning that any qualification awarded by Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education is recognised in all twenty seven member states of the European Union, as well as in any other country with which the EU has bilateral recognition of qualifications.

Structure

The programme is made up of courses totalling 180 ECTS read over a period of three academic years as a full time student or five academic years as an evening student. At Saint Martin’s Institute, the academic year is organised in three semesters, followed by semester examinations, with Christmas and Easter recesses in between. The following show the course sequence for a three-year completion timeline (these are subject to change at the discretion of the Institute). Students who successfully complete Year One will be awarded an MQF level 5 Diploma in Computing with Security & Cryptography and automatic progression to the MQF level 6 BSc (Hons) degree.

Year One

Mathematics for Computing SMc10333/35/434 4 ECTS / 4 ECTS / 4 ECTS These units build upon secondary school mathematics to provide students with further skills in algebra, graphs and functions, as well as introducing matrices and calculus. Introduction & Intermediate Programming in Java SMc10306/07 7 ECTS / 7 ECTS The first section covers the basic programming principles, rules and syntax used for the Java Programming Language, whilst the second part provides more advanced principles in Java. Computer Architecture SMc10337/38 4 ECTS / 4 ECTS This unit provides learners with a solid understanding of the fundamental architectural techniques used in today’s computer systems, addressing topics such as processors, processes, pipelining, caches, virtual memory, and multiprocessors. Introduction & Intermediate Databases SMc10339/40 3 ECTS / 3 ECTS These units give the learner a practical approach to the design, implementation, testing and maintenance of databases with a focus on relational database systems, predominantly used by businesses.

Introduction to Info Security & Identification Methods SMc10314/47 2 ECTS / 3 ECTS These units introduce the student to threats related to information online as well as the main legislations which should be observed by companies to protect such information. Mathematics for Security SMc10346 4 ECTS This unit aims to give students the mathematical background necessary to deal with the various algorithms and applications on computer security dealt with in the programme. Cryptography through the Ages SMc10348/49 6 ECTS / 6 ECTS These units aim to give students an outlook of different instances of cryptography in human history and demonstrate how cryptography developed independently across different civilisations.

Introduction to Data Communications SMc10301 3 ECTS This unit aims at introducing the student to the technologies and standards which enable computers to communicate and information irrespective of their position around the globe.

Year Two

Software Engineering SMc20347 7 ECTS This unit compares the two main approaches in the design of information systems, emphasising how to achieve optimal product and process quality. Statistics SMc21372 7 ECTS This unit introduces students to the basic statistical concepts. Programming for Prototyping SMc20374 4 ECTS The aim of this unit is to introduce the notion of scripting languages and their use in the creation of advanced prototypes that can be used to prove concepts. Specified Task SMc20375 7 ECTS A practical project to show the student’s ability to manage time, seek resources, design, execute and present a product as per given criteria. Introduction to Intelligent Systems SMc20386 3 ECTS This unit covers important concepts related to intelligent agents, rationality, logic representation, reasoning patterns, machine learning and natural language processing.

Implementing and Maintaining Databases Security and Integrity SMc21363 3 ECTS This unit introduces the learner to the advanced aspects of database implementation, including security mechanisms, views, procedures, functions and triggers. Internet Programming SMc21342 7 ECTS The aim of this unit is to give students the necessary background to understand the technical software aspects of how computers communicate across the internet. Intermediate Data Communications SMc21349 7 ECTS This unit delves into some detail of how networked systems communicate between each other. Private and Public Key Encryption SMc21390 2 ECTS This unit aims to discuss in detail the two types of encryption methods. Cryptanalysis SMc21391 4 ECTS This unit revisits the concept of cryptanalysis looking deeper into particular techniques such as linear and differential analysis. Modern Cryptography Systems SMc21392/93 6 ECTS / 6 ECTS These units focus on symmetric key systems within the computing age and aim to expose cryptography in human history.

Year Three

Research Project SMc30390 15 ECTS The student is required to conduct appropriate in-depth research within the respective field and area of the problem being tackled, identifying the appropriate background, literature review, challenge and contribute to the findings. The student’s work needs to be documented appropriately in substantial depth. Designing and Analysing Experiments SMc30397 3 ECTS This unit prepares the students to design user-centred experiments and analyse data in order to evaluate and validate the results through a statistical programming language/package. Professional Issues SMc30418 7 ECTS This unit aims to give students more awareness of the legal and professional environment within the information and facility security industry. Computer Forensics SMc31419 7 ECTS This unit aims to give students awareness on the different areas and procedures related to computer forensics, using specific tools to this end. Admissions Our students possess varying levels of academic and professional experience. Some students are pursuing their first undergraduate degree and preparing to enter the workforce. Some are seeking to update their skills with an additional degree or embark on a new learning opportunity after beginning their studies elsewhere. Others are returning to university after accruing valuable work experience.

We encourage applications from prospective students who are curious about the world around them and eager to apply their knowledge in ways that promote positive social change. Our admissions criteria help us determine whether your academic background is in line with our institutional standards.

Entrance Requirements If you are age 20 or younger, you must have passed qualifications that satisfy the General Entrance Requirements as noted below: • equivalent to 3 UK GCE A-levels in nonoverlapping subjects where grade EED or above is achieved or; • international equivalents to the above requirements will be considered and the decision taken at the discretion of SMI or; • one year of university credits (60 ECTS or 120 UK credits or 30 US credits).

Maturity Clause If you are 21 years and over, you may qualify under our maturity criteria: • 1 UK GCE A-level at grade C or above or equivalent, or; • international equivalents to the above requirements will be considered and the decision taken at the discretion of SMI, or • an acceptable equivalent (30 ECTS or 20 US university credits or 60 UK credits). • work experience may also be taken in to consideration in lieu of or in conjunction with academic requirements.

English Language Requirements You are required to demonstrate proof of competence in English, such as a recognised test of proficiency, which is acceptable to the Institute. We normally accept IELTS with an overall grade of 5.0.

In-Person Examinations Assessment of your academic work includes examinations, which are conducted in person in Malta.

Mathematics Requirements You are required to demonstrate competence in Mathematics and as a minimum must possess at least a UK GCSELevel at Grade C or above or equivalent.

Applicants must be at least 17 years of age by the registration deadline. Our Admissions Panel will consider each application on its own merits, and assess whether your other credentials or work experience qualify you for entry. Thus, you may still be eligible for admission should you not meet the above criteria.

Application Requirements To be considered for admission, you must submit a completed Application Form together with the following documentation and settle the one-time non-refundable fee of €125: Complete / Incomplete Post-school Certificates or Transcripts We need to see evidence of the relevant qualifications before we can process your application. Option 1 Arrange for the awarding/examining authority to send us a statement or transcript of your results. The statement/transcript should include your name, date of birth and University of London student reference number (if available). Option 2 Have your original documents verified by an official authority, business or organisation. Verification means that your original document has been seen and a photocopy has been stamped and signed to be a true copy of the original. We may ask for further evidence after you have submitted your application. • Personal Statement Your personal statement (100–250 words) at the end of the form should indicate your reasons for wanting to pursue this programme. Please include details about your education, work experience and current responsibilities. • Evidence of your full name and date of birth You need to provide a copy of your passport or national identification card or driving license.

The fees ahead relate to students registering for academic year 2021-2022. These fees are subject to annual review and may be increased by up to 5% every year. You may also need to budget for textbooks (which may amount to around €400). Please note: For students resident in Malta, our fees are exempt from VAT.

An administration charge of €1500 per annum will apply for non-EU students without Schengen resident permit.

The Institute offers the opportunity to EU students to pay the annual tuition fees on a monthly basis, payable by the 10th of each month in advance. The fees quoted on this page are subject to annual review by the Institute. Students who resign following the start of the programme will incur a penalty of 25% of the EU tuition fee due for a single academic year, which will be decreased by the value of payments offered up to date of resignation. Students who default in two monthly payments will need to effect payment via direct debit and incur any additional administrative fees in doing so.

* Terms and Conditions Apply

The BOV Studies Plus+ loan offers students a maximum of 5 years interest and repayment free financing to meet institute fees, and other study-related costs. The loan is repayable after graduation.

Stipend & Maintenance Grant* The Government of Malta offers full-time students monthly stipend and grants payable under the Malta Government Undergraduate Scheme (MGUS). This also applies to EU students who have been residents of Malta for the previous five years. For full information check the MGUS website: https://education.gov.mt/en/studentsgrants/

Get Qualified Scheme* The Get Qualified Scheme will reimburse a maximum of 70% of the total fees paid over a period of ten years upon successful completion through income tax credit, applicable to both MQF Level 5 and MQF Level 6. The scheme applies to both EU and third country students and is conditional on the student being employed in Malta after graduation. Parents who are employed and pay income tax in Malta are able to benefit from this tax rebate scheme instead of their child if they are paying the tuition fees on behalf of their children.

In addition to the fees payable to the Institute, the student needs to budget for the cost of textbooks (SMI provides guidebooks but students are encouraged to purchase other reference textbooks) and a laptop/computer with internet access.

Evening Students Students who wish to read for a degree as an evening student while keeping a full time job must be an EU citizen or have freedom of movement in Malta, and be over 20 years old. About Your Qualifications When you graduate with a degree from Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education you will receive the following documents:

Specific rules for the classification of awards are given in the Programme Regulations, under Scheme of Award.

• Award Certificate

The Final Diploma indicates that you were registered with Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education and awarded a Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education degree.

• Diploma Supplement Undergraduate degrees are awarded with Honours. Your final award certificate will include the classification of the degree you have achieved, based on the marks you are awarded for all completed assessments. The standard classification system for undergraduate degrees with Honours is: • First Class • Upper Second Class • Lower Second Class 18

• Third Class • A Pass Degree or Ordinary Degree is a degree without Honours.

The Diploma Supplement describes the nature, level and content of the programme you successfully completed and includes the transcript of courses taken, marks achieved and overall classification.

Founded in 1985, Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education joined the University of London network of affiliated institutions in 2000, attaining a license by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority is 2013 as an awarding body at Malta Qualification Framework level 5, 6 & 7. Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education is built on a reputation of student centred learning pedagogy and this approach resulted in exceptionally high classifications obtained by students attempting the University of London examinations.
